Because it is the Book of Mormon
Mormon spent incredible amounts of time, energy and focus compiling, abridging and protecting the ancient records.

I believe that the answer is simple: Even though we believe that the prophets we follow are called of God, and can recieve divine revelation, they are still entitled to their own opinions, and are obviously fallible. God also likes to test our faith through seemingly tough anachronisms like this.

@@craiglaw7578 - My opinion is that the nickname Mormon wasn't offensive to the Lord with previous prophets because it served a purpose for the world to get to know us by the familiar name they had heard about. Also to respect the name of the Lord by not mocking or using His holy name disrespectfully when people are making fun of Mormons and the Church. But now many people don't realize we are a Christian church and that we worship Christ. @CJ-hw6br - Hello. This was asked of me by another person. I'll share the same response. The name Mormon wasn't one we selected. It was originally a derogatory name imposed upon us by enemies of the Church. Eventually we embraced it because we're not ashamed of The Book of Mormon, but it never has been the official name of the Church. My opinion is that the nickname Mormon wasn't offensive to the Lord with previous prophets because it served a purpose for the world to get to know us by the familiar name they had heard about, that we aren't derogatory people. And also to respect the name of the Lord by not mocking or using His holy name disrespectfully when people are making fun of Mormons and the Church. This is a classic example of the incoherence of how the mind and will of an omniscient God is portrayed in the church. God apparently wasn't the least bit offended by the use of the "Mormon" nickname... until October 2018. A God who is "the same, yesterday, today, and forever."

Latter-day Saints know God already exists and we don't create Him. He created us. We also don't worship Moroni. As I said, the statues on top of the Temples are to represent proclaiming the Gospel. I bet when you see crosses on top of churches you don't consider those crosses to be graven images or assume anyone is worshipping a cross. It's only significant by what it represents. Same principle with temple statues. We also have statues of Jesus Christ at some of our Temple visitor centers, but no one is bowing down worshipping a statue of marble. We do not worship Mormon. And by having that nickname some people think that we did, rather than who we truly worship, that being our Savior Jesus Christ and Heavenly Father. Most of our nicknames actually took out the name of Jesus Christ, who is central to yours and my salvation. It's a matter of respect and gratitude.
Here's another thing you may not really realize. We have been persecuted, criticized, mocked and killed since Joseph Smith restored the gospel on the earth. Do you think some polls that show people don't like us are going to cause us to change in any way? That's nothing new.

@@johnmarquardt1991 you need to remember, jesus being god is just your interpretation. "See! It says the word was god! See!" Mormon's aren't the only ones that don't believe in the trinity. In fact, that only became the "mainstream" view hundreds of years after Jesus death. The Marcionites, Ebionites, Gnostics and more all did not believe in the trinity initially. It became the dogma around the end of the 4th century, hundreds of years after Jesus. and even today not all faiths agree on it. If things were decided on being true by who had the most believers, then you'd have a really messed up
... Oh, wait...that is how it is... Ask the top scholars on New Testament studies. Jesus claiming to be god in the (very, very very differently written) gospels is a debate, not a fact. So don't be so arrogant as to point at someone else's weird beliefs without holding up a mirror to your own.

@@picklesadventures There is no debate whether Jesus is God - Jesus is God - the Alpha and Omega. Jesus said himself that he and the Father are one. All three members of the Holy Trinity were at the baptism of Jesus. You're believing the fantasy of a con artist and abuser of women - who built a religion out of the teachings of Islam and the rituals of Free Masonry. Praise be the Holy Trinity. There is time for you to repent - spending eternity in Hell will not be enjoyable for you.

Fantastic! I think you nailed it. Rebrand is not from God and definitely from public opinion polls. Sadly, the teaching that prophets would be taken from the Earth before they would lead us astray has definitely proven to be false. If that were a true principle there would be a daily or weekly turnover in the Q15. 😂
Great info! Keep up the good work!

@Qiseeker - Since when has the Church ever cared about public opinion? The Church's history would suggest that from Joseph Smith to the present day, no prophet has ever made decisions based on popular public opinion. Unlike this UA-cam video which talks about re-branding and dresses Russell Nelson in pope attire. Do you really think the creator of this channel cares one way or the other what the Church is called? People would criticize us even if we had never used the nickname Mormon. If you honestly think the Q15 have gone astray, then I invite you to sincerely pray in faith as Joseph Smith did that you can know which Church to join. God won't let you down.
