For at least 120 years. "Mormonism" has about as much to do with the church as the term "Mackerel Snappers" has to do with the Catholic Church. Addressing the church and its members as "Mormons" was a mocking nickname derived from the scripture "The Book of Mormon," and was given to the church and its members by its enemies. But much like "Yankee Doodle," the derisory term for Americans that the Revolutionary War era British used, it was taken on as a popular nickname by the very people their enemies tried to ridicule them with. Sort of like a spit in their eye. What has happened is simply this: President Russell M. Nelson has decided that enough is enough, and the Church needs to dump the term "Mormon" in order to emphasize Jesus Christ. There is not one hint that the Church is drifting towards "general Christianity." In fact, "general Christianity," by and large, wouldn't accept us willingly in their ranks in the first place. I think on some level they realise that their old tactics of hiding information just don't work any more, and its becoming increasingly clear that the whole church is founded on a swindle. I don't see any issue with "post" members staying at BYU if they are willing to live the standards set by the Church and aren't trying to ruin the faith of LDS students attending. Same as members of other religions. Perhaps the policy is in force because the vast majority of those who withdraw membership while attending become very anti-Mormon or are unwilling to live the standards anymore and they don't want people who would actively work against the teachings of the Church sttending their university while tithe-paying members help subsidize the tuition costs? I don't see that as unreasonable.

I've always like LDS people, but to go to a university that demands such conformity is antithetical to the principles of higher learning.

Fortunately, I was born in Los Angeles in the '60's and NEVER used the name Mormon, I couldn't stand it!! I've corrected people and have told them to use the name we have in the name of our church, for members: Saints, or Latter-day Saints. Ironically, the word Mormons, or Momon as a group, never appears in the Book of Mormon and the church has almost never used the name, it's primary used by enemies of the church and religious bigots. It's no rebrand, it's a reminder to use the correct name.

Same sex relationship is not always about sex. Historically Church sealed same sex friends for eternal covenant (Eg Joseph Smith and Brigham Young). I think you guys are demonstrating wishful thinking. However, Family: Proclamation to the World reads: "a God-blessed union between a MAN and a WOMAN". If God said that, it will never change. Gay people can do whatever they please here but there is no such thing as a gay marriage in heaven. So it will NEVER happen.
