  • Rob shares more about what the experience of following the medical ketogenic diet for the last 6 months has been like for him even though he is not using it to treat a mental illness or chronic condition. He talks about why he's been doing and the benefits he has seen as well as the challenges he has faced. He also shares if he would recommend it for others.

Rob, I follow your channel but comment infrequently. About a year ago when Lauren was in psychosis I did comment to let you know I could relate to visiting my wife in the psyche ward and going home to two small kids…and also to let you know that I was days away from our 48th anniversary. Today I’m less than a week away from year 49. I am so pleased and heartened to see such positive news and that your union remains strong. I know first hand the challenges, doubts and fear but honoring your commitment to each other will bring you out to the “other side”. Hang tough…

I do not have a mental health issue, at least any I am aware of, but have been on a ketogenic diet for over 5 years now, along with my wife. The first year we stayed under 20 grams of carbs per day and tried hard not to have any meals over 7 grams of carbs. Five years ago the term medical ketogenic diet was not bantered around very much, but maybe we were doing it. The last 4 years we try to stay under 30 grams, so have eased up a bit after our initial health gains (and weight loses). Anecdotally I can say that the benefits have been tremendous. I'm currently 63 but feel much better than I did 20 years ago and have more energy then I did back then. From the start we have been whole food keto eaters, staying away from the so called pre-packaged keto foods.
I can't imagine ever wanting or needing to eat any other way again. I also had a huge sweet tooth. Those cravings stopped relatively quickly for me, which was a really big surprise.
I truly believe that our species was in ketosis for the vast majority of our time and that it is the natural default state for our bodies, with using glucose as fuel having been relatively rare and infrequent. That we feel better in the state of ketosis should not really surprise anyone. All the best to both of you.

I think that it is wonderful that you were able to improve your own health with the diet. Most people today are dealing with metabolic disorders due to eating processed foods
and not taking care of themselves. There is an obesity epidemic and we are now seeing a surge of diseases in young people that has never been seen before. We do not need carbs
and sugar to sustain ourselves and unfortunately that is what is the cause of all of these diseases. Until we go back to the basics of just eating home cooked whole foods and stop
living on fast foods and sugar this problem will not end.

Great video Rob. Really interesting to hear impact of keto lifestyle (not really a diet!) on you.
My husband and I started medical keto about 6 weeks ago to support our 26 yr old daughter (who has the same diagnosis as Lauren - Schizoaffective). We are both feeling many benefits ourselves already - especially less aches and pains in the body (must be less inflammation) and also much less up/down energy levels - no cravings for 4pm sugary snacks! Also feeling more positive in outlook (despite very challenging life events). We have both lost weight and are the lowest we have weighed in years.
We started this to support our daughter, but now we feel like doing this for our own health benefit now and in the future as we head into our 60s.
Respect to you and thanks for inspiring our family to go down this route. 😊

this did feel kinda forced but he is much more reasonable than many other evangelists, he doesn't think it's a miracle cure and he is realistic about its potential effects being placebo or not reproducible. I think keto can be highly effective for epilepsy and potentially for schizophrenia but I don't think every human should do it and expect their life to improve, the main reason he did it is for lauren which is a valid reason

The biggest thing I notice that is really acute- is waking up in the morning. On Keto I can wake up so easily and am wide awake within 60seconds... off of Keto all I want to to is push snooze and sleep in, and it takes me 15-20 minutes to wake up once I get out of bed and Im still sluggish until i have coffee. And on Keto, caffein is more intense, yet it seems like I dont notice it as much because off of Keto it has a more pronounced feeling of wakefullness. But the peak is not as intense, where as the peak of ceffien on Keto is very stimulating.

Hey. My name is Kevin and I have Schizoaffective disorder. I wish I could change my diet to manage the disease. My thoughts are also Existence precedes essence. You exist before having any concept of who you are. You become who you are by making decisions, choices, and actions. Because we have no given purpose, we have to give one to ourselves. You decide what you value and what your passions are, that becomes the purpose of your life. The meaning of life is to be alive. The purpose of life is whatever you make of it. Because it is yours, and only you can make your decisions.

Hi Rob and Lauren, You know it really makes me ill for some reason, that people are even asking the question why are you doing this? Because the way you said it, made it seem like they were being a little bit critical or condescending. And if that's how it was, what's wrong with people? like why can't you just do it because you want to do it for various reasons. And one of the great reasons is you're a wonderful husband and you want to support your wife in doing a very difficult thing. It's always easier to do something with a partner than it is alone. I don't know it just felt really wrong for people to be asking in the way it sounded like they were asking. I'm so glad Rob that you are finding benefit clarity and more energy, that is a win a big win in and of itself.🎉❤

@@80islandia Hi there, thank you for your reply. I agree with you. and when you said this channel, you know it is this channel, you're right. there is a lot of hate and I think they take down a lot of the negative negative comments I don't know I really can't say for sure. Here's why I think they get a lot of hate because when it's like a medical channel people think and want to think that they have the answer and they know what works because that way they are less frightened if they get ill. Do you see what I'm saying. As for me, I'm disabled I have chronic illnesses I'm in agony with pain it's a very challenging life. It didn't used to be like this. but when I got ME/CFS AT THE AGE OF 24 IT JUST TURNED MY LIFE AROUND. I JUST HAVE NO WAY OF EXPLAINING What has happened because now I'm 66. So many systems of the body get affected when you have ME. So not only do you have that crippling horrific illness, then you get other things. Like I have polyneuropathy and degenerative disc Disease and on and on it goes So whenever I talk to anybody they always have an answer isn't that amazing? they're not doctors they're not holistic doctors they're nothing but they have an answer because it's like what I said I think they need to have an answer to feel secure in the world. Because in the world things happen to good people things happen to people who love God things happen to people for no reason at all and it's a crap shoot. that's the way I see it now living with this for over 40 years.
I'm glad you said something because I think you're right I notice in other channels people get this kind of, have you done this have you done that Why are you doing this Why are you doing that? Poor Lauren who has suffered so much with her mental illness which is one of the hardest there is to live with. I mean if you can't encourage her and see what has happened, the miracle that has happened for her then don't leave a comment you know. I hope you have a good day and I don't know if you're ill or if you have mental illnesses, I do I have complex PTSD and severe depression. I hope I didn't ramble on too much but your reply really made me think Why do people do that? Have a great day or as good of a day as you possibly can.

Why would he support his wife who has breaks from a reality congruent to his, likely a mood disorder, and an eating disorder in her history (and all the internal conflict and baggage that comes with that)? It's because he one day they were standing together in front of friends and family, and he was asked if he agreed to stand beside her through bliss and through hell, and he clearly said "Ride or die, babe". You two keep being awesome by just being you. I'm quite a bit older than my partner, and yeah--longevity becomes a thing especially when you met, and she's in better shape, and now you're watching those years rack up. Athletes have lower ketone levels bc they are burning them. I'm a LMHR and my ketones have never been above .5. Also my glucose runs higher too, liKe 100. Very common among LMHR.

I am not a hater in any way. And it is amazing that it is working. But I will always be nervous that some folks will go off meds and do this. And it has become kinda obsessive you gotta admit.

It would be something to be nervous about, just like when a doctor switches to new for you medication. How will the new medication react for me? Will I have less or more side effects? All things everyone should at least think about when changing treatments. That said, changing to a treatment with no known side effects other than better health, wouldn't make me any more nervous than changing to one with known side effects.

This seems like it may become a dangerous platform for promotingketosis and selling diets and products- likes new niche market. There is more to talk about than ketpsis all the time.

Don’t see how this is controversial in any way… and frankly it just makes sense you’d do the diet too for simple practical reasons…
Not like anyone is being forced rat brains or whatever.
Keto diet is helpful for lots of things.

Looking back I realize I should have done the 12 step with my alcoholic ex and his anger management.
I thought that the problem isn't me - but the thing is that I was with him for a reason and it would have made him feel left of a leper and more supported.
The thing is I'm a spoonie so I don't have the energy for the most part - but maybe sometimes I should have tried to come sometimes.
He didn't come to most of my medical appointments and held my hand.
Edit: he DID come to most of my medical appointments stupid autocorrect!!!!!

Medical ketosis serves a purpose but is overall not healthy for healthy people…. Maybe IF and other things/ but no one should stay on this type of ketofor too long. You can suppprt but also eat some more fruits and vegetables and I’m assuming Lauren has the control for herself now?
