There’s a great podcast called The Keto Vegan and the host. Rachel had me on as a guest to discuss how I use a ketogenic vegan diet for bipolar one disorder. I’ve been doing it for two years and I’m thrilled to say that it has been such a beautiful game changer in my life.
Interesting video! Really glad the keto diet is working for you both and it's nice to see you both enthusiastic and positive. I don't have schizophrenia or bipolar but have a lot of anxiety and would be interested in trying keto as a vegetarian ..don't feel ready at the moment but hopefully someday [:
Thank you so much! I've been really trying to figure out how to do this plan while being a vegan, and I have been very worried that I couldn't do it. This really helps!! Love and blessings ♥️🙏
Thank you so much for making this video. Knowing that it's possible to get into medical ketosis while staying on a vegan diet will help so many people. I would love to see a video where Hannah shows us what her meals look like over a few days. My son has schizophrenia and is vegan. He will not engage with any mental health team or take any medication. I believe his version of a vegan diet is leaving him very undernourished as it relies heavily on carbs. I would love to see what a healthy version of vegan looks like, that would also keep the body in ketosis. Love what you are doing Lauren. Keep it up.
So good to see Lauren and Hannah together for another video! I was doing mostly nuts (macadamia nuts and pili nuts) until this weekend when I found out that I am allergic. So yeah, itchy hives mean no more nuts for me.
Wow Hannah is so smart, I relate to her a lot, I also became vegetarian really young, I always knew eating animals was not ethical (in most cases) I loved to hear her ponit of view!
I really like Hannah's honesty. Even though she is a vegetarian for ethical reasons, she still admits that some people will feel better when consuming some meat.
There is no such thing as "vegetarian for ethical reasons". All vegetarians still abuse animals!! Vegetarianism is a form of carnism (which please look up the term if you are unfamiliar). She has no ethical philosophy against abusing animals. The things she says are self-serving bullshit more intended to make her feel better about her cognitive dissonance and moral inconsistency than to provide you with useful information.
That's just something people have to say to avoid triggering people. It's not true. You don't need meat and it only harms your health. Everyone, EVERYONE is better off completely eliminating meat from their diet, just like they would be any other toxic substance that reduces human lifespan!!
Thank you! I really appreciate the emphasis on it being different for everyone and how it may not work for everyone in the same way! (most of that aspect was discussed towards the end of the video, and I would like to see it discussed earlier on and throughout the content)
Wow! Hannah has an interesting diet for keto! I am amazed at her young age to turn vegetarian. Very cool. I am also impressed she doesn't track macros; I rely on them and feel accomplished when I get good ketone levels after my meals. I'm almost obsessed with knowing my macros and stats. I do wonder how many total vs net carbs she tends to eat to stay in ketosis with all those fibrous foods (nuts, vegetables). And I wonder what time of day she tracks ketones. I know that in the morning my ketones are too low, before lunch a little higher but not always therapeutic, and then before dinner, usually therapeutic and where I want them. I appreciate the mindset talk too. Thank you for sharing! I'm currently doing a low fodmap + keto diet and it's quite challenging, can't wait to get to the bottom of some digestive issues and expand my food base again. I tried carnivore but only lasted 3 meals - it was SO hard to be that restrictive though I was all willing. Great interview!
Hi Lauren, many thanks for this very interesting video. I think the main reason why someone goes vegan is for the animals and then health and then the planet. It’s a philosophy not just a diet. We don’t wear leather etc. It’s best to have a whole food vegan diet and the majority of ex vegans followed these different vegan diets like raw vegan etc. A really great UA-cam channel that is very scientific is Mic the Vegan. He really knows his stuff. But once again many thanks for this video. I’m trying a whole food vegan diet and my paranoid schizophrenia has really improved. I feel pretty normal these days (I’m also on a depot that helps), and I feel part of a growing loving community of vegans. Wishing you and Rob and the lady in this video the best.
Yes! So many people I talk to think going vegan is a lifestyle choice rather than an ethical choice! I think this is why unfortunately veganism gets so much bad press, people associate it with middle class "yuppies" due to celebrities going vegan for health reasons (although many celebrities are also ethical vegans), when that is not what ethical veganism is about. This is why vegans now have introduced the term plant-based to refer to those who choose the diet for health reasons in opposition to vegans who choose this diet for ethical reasons.
If it's not "for the animals", then it's not veganism. Someone who is plant-based for their health will be perfectly happy to harm animals if it makes them even more healthy. It's just a coincidence that they are avoiding cruelty, or like the person in the video, avoiding cruelty some of the time.
This was great. One thing I need to look into though is I might have histamine issues. I've been having problems with itchy skin and histamines were brought up as a possibility. I eat tons of avocados and avocados are very high in histamines. I'm taking DAO for now but next blood work i want to be tested. Just mentioning this because I think it might be an issue for me
Thanks for the content 💟 Keep it up. I suffer from bipolar disorder, I'm still not stabilized so I have to find the right medical (drug) treatments before considering something like this to not mess with everything and introduces too many variables too early... but I do hope I can revisit the metabolic approach once I'm doing better, and more ready and equipped for that. Currently in a long depressive episode and I can barely do the basics or leave my place, live alone, seeing my doctor once a month hoping to improve more and get better again some day...

It should be noted that vegetarian/vegan diet is often considered/investigated as a possible cause for mental disorders. Nothing conclusive, but high correlation is proven (for example Michalak, Zhang, Jacobi - Vegetarian diet and mental disorders: results from a representative community survey (2012)) . Since keto diet is in itself still in experimental phase, it would be not advisable to go with something that could actually worsen your mental health.
Though there is scant research and correlation is in itself not a tool for proof, ethical vegans tend to be more sensitive and are negatively impacted by the mass and daily cruelty inflicted on nonhuman animals. It would be interesting to know if researchers have factored in this aspect.
@@janem5900 Yeah the paper states the diet itself is unlikely to be the cause of this distress but rather "Individuals with a history of a mental disorder may exhibit more perceived health-oriented behavior in order to positively influence the course of their disease. Moreover, the experience of a mental disorder may sensitize individuals to the suffering of other living beings, including animals.'.
@@janem5900 Well, being highly sensitive person (HSP) is considered as a mental disorder by some authors (for example Elaine Aron). Reasoning being they are unable to function in a world that is cruel on its own (cruel natural laws). Evolutionary, HSP would only survive in overly protective society, that would tolerate them. In any case, is HSP caused by vegan/vegetarian diet or it is other way around (HSP chooses such diet) is an interesting question. There is still no answer, bio-chemistry of diet, metabolism and mental health is still in its infancy.
@@TheTurbocheetah Bio-chemical cause and effect between diet and mental health is still not established. For example, you eat carbohydrates and they enter in such and such chemical reaction which affects your brain cells in adverse way . As I said, even regular keto is experimental in threating mental illnesses. However, there is a high correlation between vegan/vegetarian lifestyle and mental disorders. High enough that people have to be warned before they try anything .
@@janem5900 those vegans are vegans because they are mentally ill people, and not victims of being bullied by meat eaters. Vegans are more likely to bully animals by feeding carnivore pets with vegetables and making them sick. Anyway, this is just natural selection, and also vegans are shown by science research to grow up shorter than meat eaters in all studies.
I’m doing fabulous on keto with credit to you and and the doctors you’ve had on. I feel 35 again! I believe some of my replies (not necessarily just in this video) may have been swept in with the whomever is bothering you. I pray for relief for you! I had a lot of replies and can’t view them anymore. If I give you my username can it all be fixed? This is my husband’s email. Maybe I’m doing something wrong on my tablet.
Whole grains + legumes got all the essential amino acids we need to build muscles. Actually all protein comes from plants... 'People eat meat and think they will become strong as an ox, forgetting that the ox eats grass.'
This comment doesn't make sense! This is a video about the ketogenic diet. Whole grains and legumes have tons of carbohydrates, and so they cannot be eaten on a keto diet. To say they have amino acids is beside the point...
The animals we create are morally equivalent to our own children and are owed the exact same unconditional love and protection. The experiences of animals are real and matter. Their suffering is identical in nature to our own. It harms us when we take pleasure in cruelty and violence. Veganism is not a diet, it is an ethical philosophy. Perhaps you mean to say "plant-based". If someone thought that most women deserve to own property, but not their wife, you would not call them "mostly feminist", you would call it spousal abuse. Thinking that most animals deserve to live without being treated as property, but not egg-laying hens is not "mostly vegan", it's just animal abuse.
As a longterm ethical vegan Hannah emphasises she sources eggs from "local family farms". I think compassion would inspire an understanding of her decision to incorporate eggs into her otherwise vegan diet. Being well enables her to help others. Utilitarianism is a rational and respectful consideration. Am presently looking into the vegan medical keto diet and it does present as a challenge. Though I do not understand why Hannah mentioned that 'it is up to others choice and that she doesn't see it as wrong to eat animals nor does she see veganism as ethically superior'. It would be wonderful if she did not shy away from emphasising the ethical consistency of adopting a vegan lifestyle.
Except more animals die for tofu than the 1 cow that might feed you for 6 months. Plus cows are integral part of ecosystem which creates ecological niche for many other forms of life to exist. Take a look at industrial farming field and how much life there is compared to regenerative bio farm without pesticides.
@@janem5900 eggs are harmful to human health! I might be more understanding if she was getting insulin or some other product that humans need to live, but she's just doing it for pleasure. It's not excusable. It's certainly not compatible with the label of veganism.
@@janem5900 every animal abuser on the internet swears up and down that they only get their meat from Happy animals who lived happy lives. I wish I knew where they were getting their meat. It's a fucking lie. If you're willing to murder an innocent creature for pleasure, then you're willing to do it in a slightly more cruel way if it means paying a fraction of the price. Get real.
I'm sorry I don't mean to sound self-righteous but to most of us keto is a way to filter out a lot of plants out of our diet that might be causing illness in our body it's like an elimination diet
You absolutely need eggs, fish, and meat for brain health. Eggs alone go a very long way, but red meat and fish are essential Superfoods, and vegetables contain antinutrients like lectins which cause leaky gut and inhibit nutrient absorption and oxalates, which are neurotoxic. Your brain needs DHA, which is absent from plant foods, and your brain is made up primarily of saturated fat, cholesterol, and omega 3 fatty acids. Plant-based diets are detrimental for brain health. Please, anyone watching, do a meat-based keto diet, not a plant based keto diet.
Veganism is not a diet, but animal rights and liberation? And all should be vegan? Also anything else is enabling inherent fascism and by these same institutes?

Yes I follow a veg diet but don't follow keto interesting
👏👏👏
Get real.
And I am schizophrenic
Oh gosh. Keto vegan is the ultimate starvation diet
I'm sorry I don't mean to sound self-righteous but to most of us keto is a way to filter out a lot of plants out of our diet that might be causing illness in our body it's like an elimination diet
This lady is clearly FOS. She’s a UA-cam actor.
you're broken
That is false.
Oh please also avoid the eggs, the animal's babies?
Veganism is not a diet, but animal rights and liberation? And all should be vegan? Also anything else is enabling inherent fascism and by these same institutes?
Eggs you eat are not fertilized. They contain no baby.
Sweetheart. Nobody claims that this diet doesnt approve our (mental) health.
It just doesnt CURE it. And I feel like you wish you had a cure for it.
But living symptom free, even if not cured, would be very beneficial, no?
