Thanks for tuning in! I specialize in solving lawn problems and implementing strategies to fix lawn problems. Weather you have crabgrass that's not dying, too much thatch, lawn fungus, over watering problems or an ugly lawn there's not a lawn problem I can't solve. Try the Ginja 5 Steps to diagnosing a lawn you'll be glad you did. Don't forget to checkout my playlist.
Whether or not your spreading icemelt, fertilizer, grass seed, fungicides etc you want a reliable piece of equipment. No sense in buying them all. Which is why I do not prefer battery operated spreaders. In todays video I show you what happened when i applied fertilizer on my lawn with the scotts wizz battery operated hand held spreader. It left a mouse trap on my lawn. This waws caused by the fertilizer spreader dumping the fertilizer right out the front and not spreading much laterally.
The major issues I face with battery operated handheld spreaders are the batteries do not last, the design doesn't distribute the fertilizer correctly and if the unit breaks you cannot fix it or jerry rig it to finish the job.

The electric one does not work with beads of fertilizer. It breaks and it jams . And your point of tuffs of grass due to the product falling out the front is absolutely correct! Your review was excellent. I will be getting a hand I will be getting a hand crank like yours.

Yes! Nice to see you back. I’m in desperate need of your advice on what’s wrong with my lawn. Got some lime green areas popping up all over and could really use your expertise.
I’m hitting you and asking for your help in identifying my problem. Perhaps some photos
I am investing in a new spreader come spring.
Nice to have you back !

I've got the Wizz'r. It's okay. Have the exact problem featured in this vid. I found if I tipped the spreader forward I wouldn't get a build up of product in the paddle volume. It drops out the front, rather than accumulating. Not ideal, but better than having a massive dump of product in one spot.

The return of the Ginja! Long time no see. Had the Scott’s Wizz but it likes to jam up pretty easily I’d actually prefer to use a manual spreader

I agree about the jamming. See my other comment. I fixed the jamming and other issues by converting it to use ryobi one plus 18v batteries with a motor controller. The wizz works perfect now. The jamming seems to be due to low batteries or just generally under powered. It would run fine for a bit but after a while would jam even though it seemed it still had juice in the AA batteries. Now, no issue at all. And it spreads so much better with the 18v battery.

You need an electric one with a speed setting. I have one with opening and speed dial. If the Granulats are to small you need a faster speed and it throws all out. I have one from a German brand (wolf Garten) fantastic love it. And never had that problem.

3 things. #1 the machine is designed to be operated slightly pointed towards the ground for 2 reasons. One being the the product feed door is faced in front of the hopper on a slight incline. So to assist the product out it must be tilted a few degrees downward, #2 There is a vital piece missing from your spreader. It's the curb guard which is a orange piece that sits on top of the broadcast and prevents the product from being pushed up against the walls and collected inside the compartment. #3 the machine is not intended for commercial use. I've never had that issue with mine which I've had for years.

love the feedback. thanks for sharing. this video wasn't made off of one. our company used 4 of these all with the same results. I have done lawn assessments, estimated 10 homes, using this exact spreader with the same results.
Understandably this spreader is unique and could indeed need to be handled differently i don't feel negates the fact that IF the majority of people are having "user errors" this product is a functional product.

I bought the Wizz for fall blitz. Problem is that it eats batteries like the Cookie Monster eats cookies. I wanted battery switching to be easier. So I converted it to use a ryobi 1plus 18v battery. Then my urea pellets shot out like a BB gun. It was fun. I added a tiny motor controller so I could slow it down just a bit. Now it works perfect and I don't seem to have that build up falling out that you mentioned. However, I only used it for fall blitz so I had it on a very low setting.

I have owned the wiz and took it back twice because they always stopped working after a few uses. But I did buy the Ryobi spread which uses a rechargeable battery which works on my other Ryobi tools. I had shoulder problems and with the battery ones I can put it down on my side instead of having to lift it up to my waist .

I've had great success with my Scott's Wizz spreader, but I haven't used it very much. I put down Zoysia seed which is extremely tiny, but I had a great spread without the dumps shown here. Maybe I just had the spreader tipped forward so there wasn't any build up? I agree though, as a person working in an IT technical field, the more moving parts and more electronics, the more points of failure you have. And me saying anything good about Scott's products is amazing, because I absolutely hate Scott's as a company. For example, I was looking at their bags of Zoysia. Not that I needed it because with the tips Ginja gave on this site along with my research, my Zoysia lawn is amazing. But I can buy 6 pounds of Zoysia seed for a crap ton less than the Scott's Zoysia which is mostly filler and not seed. They don't tell you what type of Zoysia you're getting either. There are a lot of hybrid types of Zoysia and the blade wide is different as well as the color, so no bueno. I could go on...love this site, hate Scott's products, roll on brother!

    • @pestandlawnginja
      @pestandlawnginja  Рік тому

Love the feedback Troy! Glad that has been working out with you. As for the grass, Zoysia is a dream. great species of grass. It always amazes me when there are bags of grass seed that only list the make of the grass and not the model. You're right, some species of zoysia have a rich green color and others bright florescent green.

When I used my old manual crank spreader it would broadcast more if I turned it quickly and less if I turned it slowly. It really did an inconsistent job unless I made sure I kept the exact same turn speed on both ends of my yard. I often got 1 side of my lawn with more fertilizer (growing taller) than the end of my lawn because I started slowing down at the end. With my Wizz I no longer get those issues since it spreads ALWAYS the same speed when broadcasting. I'm curious did you have clumps in your fertilizer? Maybe you mistakenly shook your Wizz at those places in your yard? I personally have never seen that with my Wizz.

@@pestandlawnginja Maybe you need to do a video showing it happen 5 different times and have a second camera showing it dispensing improperly to prove it (it must send out clumps of excess at the moments where the grass is greener). Never seen it OR experienced it in my years of using it.
