Awesome video! Thats my biggest fear is burning my grass but this video helped give me more confidence, definitely getting a hand spreader because I felt I had no control with the buggy spreader and could barely see the fertilizer where it was falling.

I love the hand held spreaders. When I was a lawn tech at Scotts I would use them for the park strips so I wouldn't have to blow off the excess fert that went on the sidewalks or street that a regular spreader would do even with the edge guard on.

Been doing this since after my first season. I have 2500sq ft and I break it up into 500 sq ft increments and I use the Ryobi spreader. You won’t find any fertilizer product with the Ryobi setting on it so you really have to learn how to correlate a granular size to the setting and be able to adjust your walking pace. I’m n the end I find it much easier and MUCH more accurate than dumping fertilizer in the bucket spreaders and hoping the bag setting is correct.

I bought a Scotts Wizz battery powered mini spreader as my first spreader this past spring. I really enjoyed it all year. On my last fert app, it died, hard. Motor failure, plastic parts falling off. But I really liked the small size! So, next spring I’m getting a hand crank version like the one in this video. Thanks!

I agree. I used a hand spreader for my fall nitrogen blitz, micro applications this year and was thrilled by how easy it was. Frankly, for someone who doesn't "LOVE" the work involved in lawn care, it brought some of the joy back into it. It kind of reminded me of the excitement when I first discovered avid DIY lawn care thru LCN. I will be hand spreading next year whenever possible.

Been a bit since I commented. I dont suppose you have a start to finish"how to build a sprinkler system" guide do you? Took a brake from lawn care because work shipped me off to go live somewhere else for a while. (The wife loved that one as much as I did)
Got back. Rented some equipment and regraded my lawn. Took over 3 tons of dirt and construction debris out. Now I'm the proud owner of dirt. I seeded. (In west palm beach sugar sand....)
So next im thinking irrigation. Got a rainbird esp-me3 controller sitting in the garage. Gotta measure and plan. Gotta buy parts. Gotta get the water company to run me an irrigation meter. So much shit to do that I've never done before. I was working with a guy I trusted but he moved to Texas for greener pastures. Anything would help. I'd like to do most-all the work myself so I understand it better.

Very nice video. The hand spreader is really nice if you have a hilly lawn. I have a couple architectural landscape bumps the builder put in and a regular spreader can be down right dangerous going over it. It’s constantly wanting to tip over or take me down the hill with it.
I just wish Allyn would partner with someone like dewalt so they would come out with a battery powered hand spreader rather than the crank. I don’t like having to crank while I’m walking through the St Augustine as I’m disabled, old and find it hard to walk without a cane. 6 lbs is right in the sweet spot for most people with back problems as we are not supposed to pick up more than 8 lbs. The small bags of fertilizer are easy to move with a small cart or a hand truck (40lb bags are near impossible to use without assistance). Maybe one of these tool companies will finally put a small brushless motor on a hand held and we will have a battery powered hand spreader. They have put a battery on every other tool in the garage why not a spreader?
The wizz doesn’t count because it’s built horridly and doesn’t work with any battery packs I know of.

It worse than printers, they are starting to give the tools away and charge you for consumables.

So, speaking of burning the lawn....I'm in N.W. GA and have a bermuda sod front yard that's 4 years old. One side is 2500 sq ft, the other side is 700 sq ft. I used a lawn service for fert applications the first few years I lived here until I got comfortable with my knowledge of taking care of it on my own. This summer, I had my first bout with dollar spot that wouldn't go away. I finally decided to do a light scalp and a high nitrogen applications. The bag of synthetic fert from my local supplier was 50 lbs of 34-0-0 and said it covers 5,000 sq ft. I said to myself, "dang that's 10lbs per 1k....oh well, that's what the math says." So, 2 weeks later, the dollar spot was definitely gone and my yard was the deepest, darkest and most uniform green that it had ever been. It was at that point that I realized I had put down 3.4 lbs of N per 1k sq ft, which is pretty close to the recommended yearly amount of N for bermuda.
So 1- why didn't this burn the lawn?
2- how much N at one time (or the yearly total) is too much N?

Ryobi has an 18V battery power spreader that is about the same capacity, one gallon. It takes the same battery as their other power tool lines. I have two 800 sq. ft. lawns and that spreader gets the job done in no time. I believe its an 18V battery on their spreader. Putting the spreader on the scale is genius! I've been using the other type of electronic hanging scale for fishing and luggage. So will play around with it and find a way to hang my Ryobi on the scale without spilling anything thing 🙂
Also just saw the Earthwise makes a similar 20V spreader, saw it on Amazon, but it does not include the capacity in the description. Scotts also makes a AA battery spreader. I gave it a try. It is pretty weak in terms of throwing power. I wouldn't recommend it unless you have a micro lawn.

Question for you, I have not applied my winterizer fert yet to my lawn. I thought you said to wait until the first real snow fall. Is that still true? Also, I was going to throw down some grass seed too at that time so the snow covers it and it hopefully comes up next spring. i have some bare areas due to the sun damage from last summer. I've never liked hand spreaders because it harder to see where I have been when just walking without tire marks. I don't understand the idea of just "setting it to the max rate" and knowing the full hopper covers 2,000 sq ft. Great but what if max rate dumps the product out after only 1,000 sq ft.? Now I've over-fertilized (I know it likely won't burn still, but now I'm wasting product) or if the opposite I have let's say 1/3rd left after 2,000 sq ft then I need to figure out what to turn the spreader down to get that to evenly cover the 2,000 sq ft when I have to walk it AGAIN. Finally doing narrow areas to me isn't that easy either as Allyn gets down low with the spreader but that will for sure increase the amount of Fert put down on a given area so again you aren't evenly applying your desired rate. For me? I think wheeled spreaders remain the way to go. You can use a calculator like Allyn's to figure out how much sq ft you ENTIRE lawn needs and fill the hopper based on that after you calculated your spreader's rate (Scott's spreaders have a preset number that does a decent job but Allyn has videos here showing better spreaders, and how to calculate your spreader's rate from some practice tests). I find I can do the whole lawn up to 10,000 sq ft from a single hopper and after some initial calculations that I never have to do again it works out evenly with one pass each and every time just mindlessly going back and forth like a lawn mower using my wheel marks as the guide. Less effort pushing than holding a filled hand spreader too. Just another thought since like Allyn I totally agree that using modern ferts you simply can't burn your lawn unless you do something horribly wrong like spill the whole hopper in a spot or something, certainly not from just spreading even if you get the settings a bit wrong or accidentally cover an area twice.
