    for anyone trying to recreate the bass tone from this album, here’s a list of gear mike used on dookie:
    fender p bass plus deluxe*
    eclair engineering evil twin bass di
    - fair bit of gain
    - 3khz boost
    - -20db switch off
    ampeg svt-ii
    - graphic eq off
    - bass 5
    - mid 8
    - mid frequency 4 or 5
    - treble 6
    - ultra hi on
    ampeg 810 cab
    *the actual bass used is unknown, but after looking at multiple interviews with mike the closet i could find is a black fender p bass plus deluxe

      Surely its a Gibson ripper and not a pbass?

    • @drizzly___
      @drizzly___ 2 роки тому +1

      @@jonnorth424 funny you mention that - the album was recorded in september of '93, and he used the p bass (the p bass plus is actually a pj setup btw). but after touring a bit they went back into the studio sometime that october and rerecorded chump and longview, where he used one of two basses: a gibson ripper, or a les paul bass. it's a hard tossup, but i would say that it was the les paul bass because there's a video of them playing in '93 (they even played longview ua-cam.com/video/SE9uSGlw2xc/v-deo.html) and the bass sounds spot on to the recording

    • @kurdtjohn
      @kurdtjohn Рік тому +1

      The bass definitely sounds like an active PJ. You cannot get a Gibson G-3 to sound like this. With that said, I believe other basses were used for Dookie, but for Insomniac I have reason to believe that it’s only the G-3 that was used by Mike.

      +Toni Huber Agree. The isolation is probably coming from recording the bass cab in a different room, or maybe just treating the DI signal. Either way, definitely not recorded to a click track, and even so kind of sloppy (which kicks ass, by the way, considering how it sounds in the end).

    I've been trying to get this tone out of my P bass for a while. I've gotten close, but I'm still missing something, I don't know what it is, besides maybe a compressor pedal. I currently use a P bass, through an Ampeg rig, with the mids and treble turned almost all the way up, with some overdrive (with a blend about 1/4), but it's just not right.
    And before anyone says that I need something with single coils, because he used a Gibson G3, he recorded the Dookie tracks on an active P bass, because his G3 Grabber bass was being fixed at the time.

      Try lowering the action of the strings, and having you bass slung super super low. Worked for me!

    • @AlexvonBass
      @AlexvonBass 3 роки тому

      @@therealeikichionizuka I don't see how that would change the tone of the bass itself. And when it's slung super low, my arms aren't long enough for my small hands to fret properly, which isn't too much of an issue for most of the newer stuff that's mostly chugging on root notes, but the older stuff with complex basslines are really hard.

    • @User-jk8wq
      @User-jk8wq 3 роки тому

      The thing you’re missing is a bridge pickup! Dookie was recorded with a P/J pickup configuration, Mike himself has said so. He has said that he ran it almost exclusively using the Precision pickup but I think he must be misremembering. I have a P/J bass and when I just turn both pickups on full it sounds pretty damn close to this. Watch a modern live rendition of this song with Mike on his standard P basses and it sounds nothing like this

    • @AlexvonBass
      @AlexvonBass 3 роки тому

      @@User-jk8wq I should correct myself, I use a modifed Squier PJ bass, I have a pair of Seymour Duncan Quarter Pounders in it, and I use both pickups when recording any songs from Insomniac, because I know he used the Gibson Grabber, which is single coils. And I went and tried it as you said and it sounds a lot better, but there's still something missing, and I can't quite place what exactly.

      Actually it wasn’t. “Actually, on Dookie, I played an active P-Bass that I rented from SIR, because my basses were broken and thrashed from touring. That bass had P/J pickups, but the way I had it set, it might as well have just been a P-Bass. It went through an Éclair Engineering Evil Twin tube DI, and then my 6x10, and an Ampeg SVT. I had the Ampeg for the low end and the extra sub-lows, and then the 6x10 for that classic punch.”
