huh. This is the isolated track from the Album? So pretty much everyone on youtube is playing this part wrong?
This sounds like one song in the halo reach soundtrack
I’m a bit recent but this a good way to start with ear training. Thx
God he just demolishes the strings doesn’t he, Mike has heaps of dope bass lines
shout out to whoever the bass player is on green day. baseline is killer here, simple, catchy, and fun to play! 👍
None other then Mike Dirnt
Perfect tone
id like to say i just crossed the intermediate line for bass playing.. right now im trying to get as many songs under my belt. this ones nice and easy
Nice
Very surprising bass line, this may be the songs secret weapon
Perfect way to describe it
Its more complex than people think if you listen to the small inputs here and there the half tones and the timing, this is a masterpiece.
LOVE x 3 !!! 💜💜💜
Man they know how to start albums off with a bang
Green Day’s always been great at opening and closing songs
This is awesome, it's easy to miss everything he's doing when listening to the full recording. For being a trio, they really know how to fill a ton of audio space with their playing styles.

love this
that tone😈
i wont lie i was curious
bpm?
ah yes 😩
Beautiful
I remember spending a sunny afternoon as a 14 year old learning this on an old fender pbass. I’m 41 now and I still love playing this!
haha old
@@bassplayer8252LMAO
Now I'M 14 years old learning how to play this on a fender precision 😂

how to get this tone?
P-Bass and an Ampeg SVT
I've been trying to get this tone out of my P bass for a while. I've gotten close, but I'm still missing something, I don't know what it is, besides maybe a compressor pedal. I currently use a P bass, through an Ampeg rig, with the mids and treble turned almost all the way up, with some overdrive (with a blend about 1/4), but it's just not right. And before anyone says that I need something with single coils, because he used a Gibson G3, he recorded the Dookie tracks on an active P bass, because his G3 Grabber bass was being fixed at the time.
Try lowering the action of the strings, and having you bass slung super super low. Worked for me!
@@therealeikichionizuka I don't see how that would change the tone of the bass itself. And when it's slung super low, my arms aren't long enough for my small hands to fret properly, which isn't too much of an issue for most of the newer stuff that's mostly chugging on root notes, but the older stuff with complex basslines are really hard.
The thing you’re missing is a bridge pickup! Dookie was recorded with a P/J pickup configuration, Mike himself has said so. He has said that he ran it almost exclusively using the Precision pickup but I think he must be misremembering. I have a P/J bass and when I just turn both pickups on full it sounds pretty damn close to this. Watch a modern live rendition of this song with Mike on his standard P basses and it sounds nothing like this
Like check this guy out: ua-cam.com/video/tXBgN1aFkeY/v-deo.html He nails this tone
@@User-jk8wq I should correct myself, I use a modifed Squier PJ bass, I have a pair of Seymour Duncan Quarter Pounders in it, and I use both pickups when recording any songs from Insomniac, because I know he used the Gibson Grabber, which is single coils. And I went and tried it as you said and it sounds a lot better, but there's still something missing, and I can't quite place what exactly.
He doesnt use any pedals so id rule that out. It could be your picking style, he hits the strings hard but he doesnt use his whole arm, its more in the wrist, so focus on your wrist power. Technique is just as important to the tone and mike is very talented and experienced which you have to take into consideration. You might also want to turn down your mids a bit, i think that helps.
Keep in mind that you're not just hearing his rig. You're hearing his rig MICED up. It's not the same as you standing next to his cabinet. The mic used to record this makes a colossal difference in the end result. He is obviously using very new roundwound strings (I'd say that's about 60% of the sound here). If your strings are dead, no matter how much you crank the treble it won't sound the same. Also Mike used a vintage SVT head, I doubt you have that. There is almost certainly a DI signal mixed in with the recorded mic signal, so that also has an effect.
You can tell it’s a Gibson grabber
Actually it wasn’t. “Actually, on Dookie, I played an active P-Bass that I rented from SIR, because my basses were broken and thrashed from touring. That bass had P/J pickups, but the way I had it set, it might as well have just been a P-Bass. It went through an Éclair Engineering Evil Twin tube DI, and then my 6x10, and an Ampeg SVT. I had the Ampeg for the low end and the extra sub-lows, and then the 6x10 for that classic punch.”
mostly downstrokes?
I think both up and down based on how it sounds
If you listen, you can hear that the attack isn't even on every note, so it's definitely up and downstrokes. Plus it's Mike Dirnt, he uses both.
no.
Can anybody tell me how to get a tone like that?
I’m asking the same question too. But all I know is that he played a fender p bass. Using a pick also helps a lot.
I think the ampflifier you use can make a difference to achieve this kind of tone. Also take in mind that the bass track you hear here is probably compressed and might be a combination of different signals.
All I know is it’s a P bass, uses a pick, is dostorted a bit in mids and blended with clean bass. But precisely what freq range, I don’t know. Plus idk if it’s distortion, fuzz, or just overdrive.
Precision bass, round wound strings, boost around 80Hz and 1.6kHz, cut around 400Hz, play hard as fuck. Done.
Fender Bassman tube amp, Fender Precision bass, and a pick.
And Down picking👍

...and the best thing bout this track is that little pause before the Eb. Being good at your instrument sometimes means knowing when NOT to play...
If only we had Longview
lol yeah
for anyone trying to recreate the bass tone from this album, here’s a list of gear mike used on dookie: fender p bass plus deluxe* eclair engineering evil twin bass di - fair bit of gain - 3khz boost - -20db switch off ampeg svt-ii - graphic eq off - bass 5 - mid 8 - mid frequency 4 or 5 - treble 6 - ultra hi on ampeg 810 cab *the actual bass used is unknown, but after looking at multiple interviews with mike the closet i could find is a black fender p bass plus deluxe
thanks!
@@ItsHaziq89 you’re welcome! also, if you can’t find a fender p bass plus deluxe, you can find a regular pj bass and swap the pickups out for lace sensor pickups since that’s what were used in the actual bass :)
Surely its a Gibson ripper and not a pbass?
@@jonnorth424 funny you mention that - the album was recorded in september of '93, and he used the p bass (the p bass plus is actually a pj setup btw). but after touring a bit they went back into the studio sometime that october and rerecorded chump and longview, where he used one of two basses: a gibson ripper, or a les paul bass. it's a hard tossup, but i would say that it was the les paul bass because there's a video of them playing in '93 (they even played longview ua-cam.com/video/SE9uSGlw2xc/v-deo.html) and the bass sounds spot on to the recording
The bass definitely sounds like an active PJ. You cannot get a Gibson G-3 to sound like this. With that said, I believe other basses were used for Dookie, but for Insomniac I have reason to believe that it’s only the G-3 that was used by Mike.
Thanks for this!
Awesome bass line! Reminds me of Want by Jawbreaker.
This bass line makes me want a jawbreaker from ed edd n eddy.
Eargasm
this bassline gave me goosebumps, so good yo
This pause looks like he missed the note.
Flats or rounds??
Of course rounds, flats would not sound so bright
@@user-mm6vo1cl1d well actually some flats do sound brighter and punchier and made to sound like rounds than other flats, Only reason I would even ask.
I fricken love this bass tone
He is so damn good!
Show
No upload for 6 years now
Yeah i need more bass only stuff so rip
Gosh, everyone here loves Mike Dirnt and I just... have nothing to add to that.
The only reason I’m not subbing is because your at 420 subs so grays on that bud c:
Hey he's got 446 now so.. :)
Underrated bassist
Overdrive on bass?
quite
sounds more like a really heavy picking. Told from an abitual heavy picker
Overdrive on bass?
A good dark glass or sansamp and ur golden.
I don’t think so
For this Sound you need a P-Bass tuned in Eb (with maple neck), pretty fresh (nickel plated) Strings, low action, dunlop tortex pix, a overdriven ampeg svt bluestripe + an 8x10 cabinet, a parallel recorded di track for some (processed) extra clipping and of course: chris lord alge... Than slam it hard between pickup and bridge. And be Mike Dirnt! :D
@@taph2143 he plays in E Standard here but yea
Ow okay, my mistake.. my infos are coming from different forums, but with a good listen to the track, i think youre right! :)
Overdrive on bass?
I don't think so. It's just heavily compressed and played hard. The albums after this have overdrive, but not this.
No he's just an aggressive player. And I'm sure its filtered (compressed)
Algún pedal se usa para esta canción?
i know you probably camt read this but i would assume some kind of fuzz pedal
but i dont play bass
kinda sounds like a big muff
@@jaydenwark what about a RAT?
Theres no pedals, just the sound of an ampeg svt with the gain cranked a bit, I think. Edit: I realised there's a pedal being used quietly at the end of brain stew before jaded
