i'm an english hunter / jumper rider, and i honestly think that cutting is one of the neatest things i've seen a horse do. i can't even imagine how much practice and finesse that requires. very cool!
What a great cutting horse! I just lost mine at 30 yrs old, He had some arthritis in his shoulders at about 20, but chondroitin and glucosamine relieved it and he was sound and able to trail ride til he passed! Love quarter horses... such big hearts~
My mom was a competitive cutter & barrel racer decades ago. She loved those horses like her children. They got better Healthcare, shelter & food than she did! Lol!
This is honestly the most fascinating thing I've seen in a while. I've heard of "cow sense" in ranch type quarter horses, but I never thought seeing it would be this clear! I love how much this horse enjoys it's job. I primarily ride western/english pleasure, but I NEED to try cutting someday!
@Ye Olde Horsemanship Channel Not a barrel racer, just enjoy the union of horse and rider--which cutting and barrel-racing represents. Bronc & bull riding could be okay if they didn't use sometimes-cruel methods to force the animals to buck. Calf roping is a difficult one--unfortunately, I have seen far too many calves get injured from this, although watching a good roping horse work is a pleasure.
I love the roan colours. My own isn't a roan since I chose him for skills and character, not looks, but my fiancee just wanted an easy-going one for leisure riding, so I got her one that was neither particularly fast or otherwise skilled, but a calm, gentle nature with a lovely red dun roan colour. So yeah, not exactly a good horse from a competition perspective, he's pretty :)
If you've ever ridden a cutting horse, you don't really "hold on" with the saddle horn, most of the movements are too fast and strong - generally you may need the horn to push yourself back off your horses forehand so you're not "in his way." You just point out the cow, the rest is up to your horse (they get into it).
Cutting is a blast on a good horse! As for those who see abuse at rodeos and competition; most put on by NCHA,ACHA, and other working Western competitions work hard hours to make sure the animals are not aboard stressed or harmed. I've seen competitors given disqualifying scores because they were too rough on a cow or horse.
Push back on the horn and hold on hahaha it’s only type of ridding I’ve done except team pinning I got a cat horse that would compete with this one for sure but with cutting it’s all a judging points game
It's because it is an American Quarter Horse ~ They are Bred to do that if they have the Correct Bloodlines & they are a short coupled horse that is very agile to do tight quick turns ~ were Great for running Barrels also until people mixed TB blood wanting speed ~ but when they did that the horse cannot turn tightly do to a larger horse that was bred only for speed in a straight line ~ The AQHA horse is the Best all around horse & i had a Cutting horse long ago ~
they get shocked with so many volts before performing to terrify them. those shockers are meant for cows, horses are too sensitive for them and can cause death
Thank you for this video! This is a real cowboy and a real cowboys horse! No stupid unnecessary jerk downs or running the calf down chasing him. No injurys! Love this! Beautiful horse and awesome rider! Yay uninjured calfs!
We used to round up cows for the farmer...not the milkimg ones obviously because it would have been butter lol! What amazes me is the amount of non aids related communication between rider and horse and how much the horse does itself because it certainly isn't anything to do with the riders hands. His leg work and level of trust between the horse and rider must be amazing. I would want to live my life again if I could be taught to do this by someone like this rider! Phenomenal and I have been around horses for well over 50 years.
I find it interesting that we as humans take everything that we not longer HAVE to do and make it into a sport. At one point many of the skills were necessary for keeping cattle. I’m not sure many people do that anymore but the skill is preserved through sport.
Is this part of rodeo?? Because this is so much more beautiful and nicer to watch than rodeo. There's so much cruelty in rodeo sports but this doesn't seem cruel at all!! The horse is loving it! Amazing
Cutting is usually separate from a traditional rodeo. Some rodeos incorporate it but most of the time it is an independent competition. It’s more of a specialized skill set. It is a beautiful and elegant sport.
This horse is amazing!!! That's an athlete. I've never watched a cutting horses competition. Does the rider pick any cow he can cut from the herd or does someone tell him what cow to cut?
I rode all time growing up, mostly with just a bareback saddle, a pad and stirrups so no horn. I used a western saddle when the horse was tall so I could get that extra little pull up, otherwise it kinda got in the way as I loved to lay out across the horses neck on a full gallop. Sure miss the small town rodeos that were everywhere when I was young, most arenas are gone and few rodeos left in Washington state where I live.
that last cow: CRAP CRAP CRAP WHAT DO I DO? I KNOW!! GO RIGHT! AHH! HES THERE!!! GO LEFT! NO RIGHT! NO WAIT GO LEFT!!! horse: i can match you... any time, any place....

Awesome training job and the horse is obviously well taken care of, I am glad to see ppl care for their horses like I do:) also this is the type if western classes that should be shown over the horrible things like bucking and rodeo events that injure animals.... thank u for sharing:)
who's narrating? one of the men sounds like my grandfather behind the camera on our Sandstrom home videos...especially the ones where they show the cow-milking process in the middle of the 1900s
That's really impressive ! I have a question (I don't know anything about western riding sorry), once the cow is alone, is it the horse who take the initiative to follow the cow's moves (left/right) or the rider still guide the horse ?
Aezyme I know this is super late! But yes and no. The horse has training so that they can do it themselves but the rider gives the horse a sense of direction. Hope this helped:)
Yes, as with every equine event, the horse has to have interest. This horse you can see has a calf fetish. Cowsense is what they call it. We had several horses that would cut calfs on their own. That is really cool to watch.
The rider chooses which cows he wants to cut out, there is no predetermined cow. But once he shows the judges that is the cow hes after he must stick with it until he cuts it out of the herd or there will be a 5 point penalty
You ppl that say "poor cow" or "that's cruel" what do you know about being a cowboy? the cow is fine. What do you do if a cow is injured or you have to single one out for some reason? THIS! Would you rather run it down or rope it and accidentally hurt it more or stress it more than it is!? no! For those too ignorant to realize that this is a helpful skill, stfu, and go watch some mindless blather... :/
Exactly!! Guess many city people are sjw don't realize that a lot still live this way of life. It's in their blood and all they know. Plus, when you have over 100 head of cattle this is the best way to separate vs a truck. You must brand your cattle too.

the cow is like "what the-? why is there a not-quite-cow-like thing chasing me?"
i guarantee ya all them cows have plenty of exposure to horses at home
Sachy B. That is almost exactly how my cows acted the first time they saw a horse, they were like "why is this not quite cow thing eating my hay?"

I wish more rodeo events were about showing the unity between horse and rider rather than the cruel events.
I just wish they promoted events such as this more. American Royal used to be huge here 30 years ago
