- Riding sheep is a wild and woolly experience for the youngest rodeo competitors. Many may have been on ponies trained to ride but sheep are a totally different animal. The Clarendon Outdoor Entertainment Association (COEA) opened Independence Day festivities with a July Fourth Junior Ranch Rodeo. Five-member teams representing ten working ranches in the region demonstrating their working ranch skills.
The Saint's Roost Independence Day Celebration has been held in Clarendon, Texas for 145 years. There are three rodeos during the celebration with kids riding sheep also known as mutton bustin'.

The dirt is all turned up beforehand so you get a bunch of cushion. He's mostly crying from getting dirt in his eyes and surprise.

@@DustyReinsStories Im 39 year old father of two. Putting what seem to be down to 3-4 year olds WITHOUT safety gear is mind blowing to me. All of them should wear motocross gear at the bare minimum. The hoofs can easily break bones. How do you deal with injuries? Cant imagine the hospital is ok when they are told the kids were forced to ride sheep at that age? Im Norwegian so this is not part of our culture and if it was it would be highly regulated
In many rodeos, especially ranch rodeos, the use of safety gear is up to the parents who are required to sign a form releasing the rodeo committee from responsibility for injuries. An ambulance with EMTs is on hand at all public rodeos in the US and most will have a livestock veterinarian present as well to tend to any livestock injuries.
Clarendon, Texas is a small community in the heart of cattle-raising country and this Independence Day weekend celebration rodeo series is a tradition that has been an annual event for almost 150 years. Long before safety equipment was a consideration of necessity. Many of these kids have relatives going back to their great-grandparents who rode sheep here and went on to work on local cattle ranches as cowboys and cowgirls.
Most rural youth in the US are taught by their parents to face difficult challenges and failures in life straight up and overcome them instead of cowering in fear.
The arena soil is groomed and fluffed up before a rodeo begins. Compare falling off a sheep on that surface compared to the hard surfaces where kids learn to ride skateboards, skates, and bicycles.
And not to say that it never happens but, I have been watching these events for just over 60 years now and I have never seen a child participating in them that required any sort of medical attention.

They are not lambs, They are fully-grown ewes and their physiology is much stronger than a dog of the same weight. Perhaps you should consider getting involved with a 4-H club to learn a bit more about livestock.
Oh come on, it's a slight annoyance. They injure each other constantly I don't think they are being harmed. Bull fighting is awful but bull riding is actually super humane. The goal is to make the most alpha bull possible so they have great lives. Obviously you don't mistreat and cage an animal bred to be as athletic as possible. Then, once a month, some guy jumps on their back and they kick them off. Then it's back to the pasture. Not exactly a hard life and much better than anything they would have in the wild.
