The raspy voice and the huge toothy smile and over the top Channing persona were all part of a comic shtick that went over really well. She was beloved by everybody
Nope. It was initially planned for another actress, Betty Grable, to play the main character Lorelei. But the creators of the film cast Marilyn Monroe for the role just to save money.
For those comparing this to Marilyn's film version, keep in mind this was filmed for a TV variety program so had to be fit into the allowed time. Channing had been singing this since 1949. It wasn't until 1964 that Hello Dolly would replace Diamonds as her signature song. The second chorus here was not in the original show. Also, her second victim is a very young Dick York.
How fantastic is it that we have the then Queen of Broadway and the then Queen of Motion Pictures both singing this iconic song. Both did it in their unique and special way, and both did an incredible job. I prefer MM's version, but love Carol's, as well. I know that this has nothing to do with the subject at hand, but I wish that Marilyn possessed 1/4th of the happiness that Carol exhibited throughout her 97 years. She was always up and bubbly, whereas Marilyn was haunted by the ghosts of her past, and could only glimpse happiness for brief periods of time. May they both rest in peace, knowing that they each were, in their own way, true legends.
Poor girl great preforming will be missed..Dimonds are a girl's best friend true and love this Movie..God bless you Carol..Love is a what you've brought Hollywood.
Carol Channing was absolutely one of a kind. "Diamonds are a girl's best friend" has been repeated many times, but there's no way in Hell you can beat the original. Carol Channing even brought it back as a guest on The Muppet Show with Miss Piggy. Can you beat that? (Well, maybe with a stick.)
This video is the answer to the question "Why was Carol Channing replaced by Marilyn Monroe in the movie?" I'm not knocking Carol Channing. She was a great comedian. But, there was only one Marilyn Monroe, and she created a scene that is is part of cinema history.
Just realized after the 5th+ time watching that she takes her hand away at the start of the video and the dude smacks himself in the face instead...Carol making statements before she even started XD
I wonder how many people know she was also African American? She was told at age 17. She was breaking barriers but didn’t get credit and would not have been allowed to act or sing those roles in those days had the truth been known. I’d like to believe her wink at the end had more than one meaning. ~ Cheers
She wasn't African American; she wasn't even biracial- she was ¼ Black and ¾ German American. To wholly classify a white looking woman by her minority ancestry is hilariously disingenuous. The One Drop rule is over! Carol Channing didn't break down any barriers for Black actors on Broadway. She kept her Grandma Clara in the closet until much later in her life when it was suddenly "cool" to be Black.
Carol"s version is so different to Marilyn's version. So one cannot compare even compare the two performances. However, I LOVE Marilyn Monroe so I prefer her version. I think being a little seductive suits the song.
She sang the ORIGINAL version on Broadway. Though this was made to fit for a variety show. Not sure if any footage of the original exists, but sure hope so!
Legend. May she rest in peace. - I'm confused, though. The title of this video says it's from 1957. That would be impossible since Carol Channing never sung this song in film, and Marilyn Monroe's film version came out in 1953. The only thing that makes sense here is that this is film footage of the original stage production of "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes". from 1949. But 1957, it ain't.
This footage is not from the 1949 stage production but rather a performance on a Television variety show in 1957. Not sure what TV program though. Channing, of course, sang this song for her entire career.
I prefer this version because the cynicism is more apparent in her tone and delivery. I felt like the Marilyn version was a little bit too seductive for a song that is decidedly not
Both versions have their appeal. But when I think of this song it's Channing that jumps to mind. Her voice just fits it. From gritty to sensual her vocal expressions gave it depth that others can't seem to copy.
"Corn? When did I eat corn?" (Also, I'm a long-time student of Russian and I swear that Carol Channing's voice is helpful for understanding the difference between "hard consonants" and "soft consonants" in Slavic languages. "Soft consonants" are tricky for English speakers, but if you try to do a Carol Channing impression like Ryan Stiles, you're at least going in the right direction.)
Carol Channing is the original. She performed it on Broadway in the 1940s. When Marilyn did it, they changed the entire tone of the song. Channing's version had more of a comic take with a wink to the actual lyrics. Marilyn did a seductive version of the song and I think some of the lyrics get lost with that but boy do you pay attention to other things.
She just plows through it as if by rote. Marilyn actually gave the lyrics more meaning with a more varied vocal. They are so different, but you can't help but compare. Thank goodness MM got the movie for posterity.
Monroe's sexy performance was for the film audience for sure and it looses the cynical approach the lyricist & original book author had in mind that Channing delivers upon.
HOW could they allow the overrated Streisand to steal Carol Channing's character in "Hello, Dolly!" in order to absolutely RUIN the multi-million-dollar movie version? Let's face it, most of Barbra's screen performances are unwatchable and casting her in "Hello, Dolly!" was a criminal offense.
WRONG. My bff/bestie/crush hates girly stuff, mainly because she's the bubbly type of personality tomboy, who's 5'3'' and skinny as heck/hell (wont say name for safety) but she does skate stopped then started doing it again, but anyway she does have a kinda girly skater with sparkles on her rolling bag she takes in to the rink thats kinda purple pinkish. i think
It's interesting to hear that she had this voice for forever. I was thinking it just got so raspy in her older age.
I was literally just thinking this. She's 36 here, so I wonder what she sounded like even younger.
The raspy voice and the huge toothy smile and over the top Channing persona were all part of a comic shtick that went over really well. She was beloved by everybody
@jeremiahgabriel5709 The original 40s version is probably on UA-cam.
I'm going to give it a squiz
Turns out she always had the voice
So was I, I thought the same thing as well
I NEVER noticed until today that she was robbing those guys!!! So flawlessly!!! Carol Channing was unconquerable.
People tend to forget that Carol Channing originated the role of Lorelei on stage before the movie with Marilyn Monroe.
I literally just found this out
MonsterHuntressRoon So what?

I don't liked the voice of this one
Nope. It was initially planned for another actress, Betty Grable, to play the main character Lorelei. But the creators of the film cast Marilyn Monroe for the role just to save money.
The wink at the end is priceless.

That's not Dick York.
@@Ctrl-XYZ yeah I can see where they may think that, but I just don’t see it
The timing is right for Dick York. Profile looks similar. Though I couldn't find a credit on the internet.
Rest in peace, dear Carol. ❤

She could really belt out a song and was a master of comedic timing.
Broadway dims it’s lights tonight in remembrance.

RIP Ms. Channing. She was a lovely human being.
Man, her voice is hilarious, it's so perfect for this kind of music!
I saw Carol Channing appear at a Hotel lounge show in Chicago in ca 1957. She was fabulous then, a great star!!

@Rhaegar is right, just because someone has 1/100th Cherokee Indian does not a 'Native American' make.

Marilyn's was the sensual, sexy version. This is the comic, goofy version.
She sang the ORIGINAL version on Broadway. Though this was made to fit for a variety show. Not sure if any footage of the original exists, but sure hope so!
Honestly I prefer this version, Marilyn's kinda lacked energy imo. I heard this version first.

She just plows through it as if by rote. Marilyn actually gave the lyrics more meaning with a more varied vocal. They are so different, but you can't help but compare. Thank goodness MM got the movie for posterity.
Channing's works for the stage, Monroe's for the film. You really can't compare the two when you think of it in those terms.
Chris N Marilyn OWNS this song. No one can compare to her, really.
Monroe's sexy performance was for the film audience for sure and it looses the cynical approach the lyricist & original book author had in mind that Channing delivers upon.
