For anyone doesn't know, Ryan Stiles is a Male improv comedian who impersonated Carol Channing frequently on Who's Line Is It Anyway as hosted by Drew Carey. For many of us born in the 80s and 90s it was our first introduction to her which gave us a name. Of course she did voice the unflappable Ms. Fieldmouse in the Berry Manilow penned children's classic Thumbelina, we didn't necessarily know her name.
@@balasmj I always wondered what his obsession was with her. I do know they were both originally from Seattle, Washington. Maybe they knew each other. Maybe she's really his mom.
@@FDSixtyNine Back in the 20s-60s, Americans had developed what is called a mid-Atlantic accent. This became the staple of how people in the 50s talked!
@@TheVeryAngryShrimp this isn't a mid-atlantic accent. She is clearly speaking with a rhotic accent. If you want to hear a good example listen to Joan Crawford, or even Kelsey Grammer
I saw this incarnation of "Hello, Dolly". I can't believe that it was that long ago. My friend and I bought tickets to see the Broadway show, simply because we wanted to be able to say that we saw Carol Channing on Broadway and one of her iconic roles. She was definitely inhibited by her age (when they did the high kicks during a musical #, she didn't even reach past her knees). But the audience did not care. They applauded vociferously and wildly whenever she simply walked on stage. This remains one of the greatest theatrical moments in my life. God Bless Carol Channing.
I always thought that was so sweet of Conan to console Carol, and not let know her know the audience was chuckling at the "doing me" quote at 6:15. You could see she was a little embarrassed and he changed the subject perfectly.
im one of the very few in the pantheon of history who once saw the divine conan walking down broadway the week before his show began, talking to himself out loud, rehearsing. hot feller: love him.
A gifted actress like her will not "rest in peace". I am sure she keeps on entertaining all mighty angels, and they LOVE HER! But after all, you're quite right. After so many years of HARD WORK to give fun and entertainment to a worldwide audience!
I do a decent Carol Channing impression. It started in college to disturb a friend. It's Carol singing Monty Python's "Sit on My Face." The consonant order in that song is perfect for her speech affectations.
thats so funny that this interview was in 1997, the year that I was born, and im here in 2020 watching this... haha this moments that you realize about time
nice. I saw her several times over the years....mostly in midtown east...usually walking with 1-2 other people....window shopping. It absolutely KILLED a former (gay, theater loving) co-worker whenever I recalled @ when and where I saw her...and didn't manage to ask for an autograph or talk with her, but as a native NYer...kinda' like to respect celebrity's anonymity, especially when they are taking care of their own business....not in theater district, for example. He eventually DID meet her....and he posted the photos from the mid-90s....around the time when Conan's interview took place...reposted on his FB page this week. Carol died at age 97 a few days ago.
Glenn Leahey yeah it’s funny her silhouette was so distinctive it made me look down. 👀 She probably was going to a society of NY I’ll never see, and I was going to twelfth ave..🙃
This actually would have been 1996. They finished the Broadway run before hitting the road again in September as is mentioned briefly here in the clip.
She was a warm, fun gem of a person. I've seen lots of impressions of her, and I adored when comedian Mario Cantone would do her voice on Gilbert Gottfried's The Amazing Colossal Podcast. Here's an example clip: ua-cam.com/video/7BxTOcRssCY/v-deo.html

I came here to find out if Ryan's impression of her is spot on or not.
Ans: It is! ;p

Me too haha!
Hell, that's why I'm here, too.
Also me!
that this is the top comment shows.... so did everyone
So far, every impression of Carol Channing has been accurate.

Wouldn't have known about her without Stiles..

The weirdest part of her legacy is that she'll probably be more known as a Ryan Styles impression.
lol yep
I just came here thanks to him xD lol
“I’m Spartacus.” 😂

she's sooo unbelievably adorable!!!!
She seems like the sweetest person.
Carol is brilliant in a scripted show and without a script she is fantastic! Conan handles the interview beautifully!
She was so adorable! I just love her!
RIP MS CHANNING
She died? 😔
@Corwin11412 so that was funny?
@@audreymai2773 I think he meant “she’s been dead for over a year lol” without the period. so not meant to be funny, more or less used unironically
Wind her up and let her go, I could listen to her for hours. So entertaining, funny and insightful. There will never be another like her💓💔💗

She knew exactly what she was doing. Its part of the act.
That was her schtick. She was glorious at it.
She knew what she was saying.
I think she would have still been in on the joke and laughed if Conan had said yes. it would have been less patronizing even
Carol never said or did anything on television without understanding how it would work comedically.
looked her up cause of Ryan styles. holy fuck he nailed it
just from watching Thumbelina as a kid, this woman will always be Ms. Fieldmouse to me
Awwww.....I remember her well as the White Queen in ALICE IN WONDERLAND back in 1985.
Yes!!!
what a kind woman and she embraced her gay icon status so openly and sweetly
I never knew why she didn't get her own sitcom. She was so funny. She did audition for a part on the nanny but had to turn it down
Physco Goth she did a pilot for a sitcom in the sixties called The Carol Channing Show but it wasn’t picked up.
A true LEGEND.
Conan's aged remarkably well.
She had done 'Hello Dolly' so many times during her life, and I've never seen it.
Larry Hagmans mother is Mary Martin. Another Broadway legend. They go way back.
Rip. Lovely lady
Channing and O'Brien know how to set 'em up and knock 'em down brilliantly! What a madcap, fresh, improvisatory conversation!
she seemed so genuine and sweet. she just lights up when she laughs
Carol is everyone’s grandma
So this is who Ryan was talking about the whole time.
CAROL IS JUST WONDERFUL HERE.
Such a sweet lady, love her
The one and only! What a delight to see this!
She doesnt act like a 98 full of energy wow
Is this shag? It’s just gorgeous. I seen this and instantly pictured Ryan styles and breaking the light. Funniest whose line moment ever lol
