Join award-winning writers and directors Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert as they talk about the process of developing, creating, and releasing their surprise hit movie that took the world by st- okay, look, if you’re still reading this, we should tell you that we've run out of new things to say about Everything Everywhere All At Once, so although we’ll try our best to stay on topic, we'll most likely go on a bunch of tangents about the state of the world, the impending climate crisis, the collapse of consensus truth, the rise of AI, the importance and impossibility of self care, and our collective responsibility as storytellers to confront the issues of our time, because that's probably going to be what's on our mind, but we can't make any promises, but at times we don’t feel qualified to talk about any of that stuff, anyway we hope you enjoy our SXSW keynote!

@SXSW I always hated that once the Oscar season was over, directors stopped doing interviews or presentations, and we didn't hear them until their next movie came out. For example, I haven't heard anything from Bong Joon-Ho or Isaac Chung, etc. And I hadn't heard anything from Daniels either. Daniel Kwan thinks about stuff deeply, but Scheinert is good at adding in his views seamlessly. I obsessively watched many of Daniels stuff last year, and it was always fun and informative to listen to.
Most filmmakers spend a hundred more times dealing with every little thing than the viewer will ever know. For example, in Oppenheimer, a movie that's 3 hours long, Nolan felt the need to give a small nod to Richard Feynman (played by Jack Quaid) including playing the bongo drums. This is a bone thrown to those that know Feynman well through "Surely You're Joking, Mr Feynman:. Was it needed? Maybe not, but someone wanted to see it, and Nolan kept that storyline in.
You rarely hear someone like Kwan talk about movies this way, mostly because many filmmakers don't think this way at all. For example, Justine Triet and her partner (Anatomy of a Fall) wanted to make a movie that had two central ideas. First is how strong women are treated differently than strong men, so they explore gender dynamics in the movie. Second is how the kid (Daniel) tries to process what happened. He wants to know the truth, and yet, he seems to act on something else deciding the truth might not be so good for him. He's already lost one parent, does he want to lose another? That movie is based on a question of interest, but doesn't have the over-arching philosophy of Daniels and how they view their movie within this structure they have (Ikigai).
Good stuff. Glad the guys made it to SXSW to give this talk.

I know what you mean. I love the deep dives and peeks behind the curtains like this! But, keep in mind, so many years of obssession and prep/pre-production go into films (especially the heavy ones!) that by the time the film has been released, let alone after the awards and touring season, a filmmaker may be exhausted and even completely over thinking about a subject, if not already moved on to the next obsession/prep. I can only imagine how draining it is to continue talking about a thing that you’ve already talked about thousands of time, ad nauseam … that said, this Daniels talk is truly a gift. One that I’m grateful for, being that it’s so informative and thoughtful (as the Daniels always are).

    • @tennisCharlzz

@@LECITIZENTEN That's true, but they could talk about other things related to movie making. I know the awards circuits mean you have to promote your own film and that can take months, at least, between November and Oscars in March. EEAAO opened at SXSW, I think, and that's early in the year (just after the Oscars), so they had an early promo and then an Oscar promo where they do a gazillion interviews.
Yes, they do get tired of it, I agree. But I wish they wouldn't disappear until their next movie (which seems to be unknown, at this point) and talk about something else (as they did here).

Super sincere comment about GOD and Higher Power... but right into "gotta get paaaaaaaid."
A modern day parable. The secular world makes it really hard to stay focused on Higher Things.

I think they wanted Spielberg to "pass the torch" to Nolan this year, sort of to crown Chris Nolan as the auteur populist filmmaker of the current era.

This is why we feel like we feel when we watch The Daniels'movies. They are not filmmakers,. They feel the moral responsibility to be themselves and, through that, inspire others to do good.
