      That is my absolute favorite thing about this movie. No one (with maybe the exception of Jigo) is an actual villain, they all just have a different perspective and fight for different reasons.

    This movie is very personal for me. When i was like very young we had this show in my country called "1001 wishes". It was only 1 time every year and you get to choose what's played on the show. Some guy or whatever choose this movie to be played during the ongoing show. I managed to catch it exactly at the moment where they shoot the god's head and it just stuck on me. I couldn't remember anything but that moment and i literally tried to look for this movie for such a long time. I didn't know even if it was a movie or just an ad or whatever. But it was my memory.... one of the most significant ones from when i was still a kiddo. Then one day 2 years ago i was browsing trough these Japanese anime music videos and i heard this song in a mix.. and then i remembered .. i knew i had heard this song before.. i was sure of it. I started going trough the comments tried to shazam it and nothing came out.. Then about a week later a guy replied to my comment from where the song was and i quickly rushed to google it and found it at last.. the movie: Princess Mononoke. I straight went to watch it.. To this day this remains to be one of the most beautiful moments in my entire life. I was speechless and emotionally overwhelmed by this movie and the memory it held for me. One of the very few things in this life that made me cry my guts out!

      I had a somewhat similar experience too! Its was when i was 11 years old and my school had a one day trip where we went around visiting many places. The last stop was at a prestigious school, mind you it was already night time, and they welcomed us with a live orchestra. They played a total of 4 songs, but there was one particular song that had an anime projected on the stage whist the band was playing in the background. The animation was amazing and add to that the orchestra was playing beautifully, it made the whole room filled with life, i was basically flying. But my eyes were locked onto the screen, where you know the movie Princess Mononoke was playing, but i didn't know what anime was it cause i was too young. But there was one part where the deer god/God stared wide eye directly into the screen, its eyes expanded while its pupil was kinda diluted, shocked me, My HEART felt like jumping out from my chest, telling me to RUN. Like Literally gave me shivers. I was 11 that time, and that god became my nightmare for weeks. Like i'm not lying....WEEKS . When i was 15 i went to search for the name of the anime, and try to watch the whole movie. Who knows, i might feel different when i'm older. But i think it gave me a trauma, cause till this day, i still can't look at the gods head......or face, because i flinch every time i look at it. It still kinda scares me ahah. But i still love the anime no less!!

      The name of a work is often based on an object of fascination, more often than not multi-faceted objects. This is epitomized by the wolf princess in this movie, as she is a being stuck between the conflicted views of nature and humanity, being born a human yet raised by the wolves. While Ashitaka is undoubtedly an important actor in the plot, in conveying the message he served no more purpose than a narrator, whose experiences we base our views and understandings upon. I hope this clears things up.

      I Don't know where you saw that they had to shut down because it's not true :) I think Ghibli is going to end because the originals creators are old (Hayao MIYAZAKI) and - sadly - dead (Isao TAKAHATA). With Joe HISAISHI for the music, you can tell that it will soon end. I Believe that Studio Ponoc (Mary and the witch's flower) is the new Ghibli, because it's fullof old animators from Ghibli, and the compositor also worked for some Ghilbi as well. So I think, if they slowely shuting down, it's by precautions, because they know they can't continue like this forever. So they created sort of a back up with Studio Ponoc ? Again ,I Don't know, it's just suppositions but Ghibli is certainly not poor

      Atte Timonen I agree it really is one of the best films I've ever seen. Mononoke Hime wasn't my first Miyazaki film; that honor goes to My Neighbor Totoro, but it's my favorite movie right behind Spirited Away. I saw this movie when I was about nine or ten at my older brother's friend's house, and it just blew me away. Figures that the first "adult" movie I saw as a kid ended up being one of the movies I come back to over and over again.

    • @Rosgakori
      @Rosgakori 9 років тому +6

      Exactly. I love Nausicae almost as much as this, but this will always my favorite. The scenery, music, characters, animation- everything works perfectly. And it's great for kids as well, even though it is kinda graphic. But Mononoke has no clear "evil villain". Every character has good reason for what they are doing. They are not evil- they just see the world differently.

    I lived in Japan for 3 years (specifically on the island Okinawa cause my parents were in the military) and whenever the typhoon season rolled in they would have the entire school just packed in the massive library that they had and we would all just sit and silence because we had to listen for announcements cause yk there’s literal typhoons going on outside. But anyway to calm the us kids down (this was an elementary school and I was in there from 1st to 3rd grade so I was like really young) they would play Ghibli films on the projector with the big speakers that could somehow fill the whole place without being too loud. I don’t know what it was but something about this film specifically combined with the suppressed sounds of heavy rain and speeding winds outside (the whole building was built like a bunker) that just calmed all the kids. This movie is damn special to me and I can’t even say why it’s just something you have to watch to see why so many people see it as Ghibli’s best film.

    Princess Mononoke is one of the few films about nature/environmentalism that never runs into the problem of becoming too preachy. There are no real villains, just people trying to survive however they can. I think the core message is that while we have to be mindful of our environment, humans will inevitably keep evolving and moving forward. The world is never black and white, and Princess Mononoke does an incredible job of exploring both perspectives. I feel like Miyazaki is one of the few directors who really understands what it means to be human.

    Movies like this makes you appreciate your surroundings more. Not just nature in this case, but quite literally everything. It doesnt force you to appreciate things through guilt or shame of jealousy. It does so by painting them in a different light. Characters and their relationships with eachother, helps resonate onto your real life social circles. The story itself, puts your own in contrast to a work of fiction, which somehow still manages to feel just as real as the world around you.
    God i love Miyazakis work.

Mononoke Hime is easily my favourite movie of all times. I've watched it for about 100 times, if not more, and I am not joking. I used to watch it almost daily. Same, I first watched this movie when I was 5 as well. I'm 18 now. To this date I have yet to see a movie as good as Mononoke Hime. Only Ghibli movies make me emotional, just hearing the soundtrack is enough. I think it's the combination of personal memories, emotions and the fact that these movies are the highest form of art I have ever seen.

    Just wanna share my first Studio Ghibli experience out here. :3
    When i was 11 years old and my school had a one day trip where we went around visiting many places.

    San is the proof that you aren't born good or bad, you are taught what is good and bad.
    EDIT: I wrote this really late at night and while this comment makes sense, it's super vague and using words such as "good" and "bad" isn't the best, especially in the case of this movie, because in the end, everyone had their personal objectives and while the side of the emperor looked the worst, the point of a kingdom and civilization is to continue to grow, and that always comes with sacrifice, hence deforestation, the exploitation of a culture and threatening the populations of plant and animal species. The use of San in the movie is to create a variable used to show that a human who is trying to protect the forest is just as hateful and destructive as the humans that are expanding the industrial movement in Japan, (who was taught at a young age to hate humans because she herself is human and hates that she is a human and will never truly be a wolf), the other side of the same coin.

      You are only born good or bad in the sense that society has already defined much what it thinks about you already. And similarly to the Guardians of the Galaxy thing about not being 100% a ____ you aren't really 100% good or bad. Since morality is only an eye the beholder thing good and bad have no value to anyone other than the self in analysis. Our society makes us think other ways however that there is good and bad and it is defined as some things. Such as is darkness really that bad and is light that good. I played a character in a game that is sort of like dungeons and dragons and I had control over light based magic and yet I never healed anything and did many terrible experiments for good reasons.
      There is no good or bad.
