What's interesting is that the word "Mononoke" is a word the Japanese used to call the collection of monsters and spirits. So, the Japanese title "Mononoke-Hime" literally means San is seen by the humans in the story as the "Princess of the Spirits/Monsters". Only the humans actually call her by that title; Ashitaka calls her by name after he found out about her true name and the gods also refer to her as San. This means that because she's usually the person intervening for the forest, the humans saw her as the figure embodying or representing all those monsters outside their Iron Town rather than an actual person with a real name.
@@TheBurbyGirl In the scene where San attacks Lady Eboshi, you can hear some of the surrounding men and women yell out things like "Skin her!" and "Behead her!" further demonstrating their non-human interpretation of San. That specifically was the moment when this concept clicked for me.

Ghibli did not let them cut anything, but Neil Gaiman, who was responsible for the script, had to write off some lines and add some others (although he was keeping Ghibli's side all the time, just to make it clear; he just had no choice). As a result, if you watch the movie with english dub you believe that monk Jigo was working on Emperors behalf, which is not the case, but because Americans like to blame state and government for everything bad that happens it kinda made sense in American context.

I think that this theme represents ashitaka’s soul. Somehow, he knew his fate and he just accepted it even knowing that it may cost his life. He had to face other’s conflict and did it as better as he could without any doubt. What a sense of justice, man! I’ve learnt a lot from him and from every character, the film is amazing its soundtrack too and as nature’s friend and as a human it makes my heart fulfilled.
I love this movie so much. This song and the rest of the soundtrack just adds to the beauty. I don’t understand why in school we learn about Mozart and Beethoven for their music. While Joe Hisaishi is slapping breathtaking, astonishing, masterpieces of the beauty of music in Japan.
They're not comparable. Mozart and Beethoven are part of a very old and compositionally complex tradition of art music, "music for its own sake," which film composers like Joe Hisaishi draw on as they compose the scores to movies like this one. Still, a lot of art music composers since the 20th century, like Dmitri Shostakovich, also composed film scores, in fact Shostakovich mostly made a living from his film scores!
@@dsch0 Of course I know that the composers compose music complete differently, these two people changed music history. In fact, they truly created music. Joe Hisaishi gets inspired by Beethoven and Mozart in a lot of his work, as he’s said so. And without them, basically most of the music we hear now, wouldn’t exist. And yes.. I understand that Joe Hisaishi is century’s ahead in music. These people literally created the music art form, I was being enthusiastic when writing this comment. And if we’re talking about schools, I do believe alongside learning Beethoven and Mozart, there’s many music artists from this generation that we learn from. I think we should learn more from composers who write film scores, because there’s many astonishing composers like Joe Hisaishi. All of Ghibli’s films are truly masterpieces, along with there music.
This is my favourite film of all time. An absolute masterpiece. Nothing has come even remotely close to beating it. What a fantastic experience it was watching this for the first time as a little kid and being both disturbed and intrigued. It's given me this satisfied feeling that has never left me. He made the choice to leave, but once he did, he was forbidden to return. As a result, if you watch the movie with english dub you believe that monk Jigo was working on Emperors behalf, which is not the case, but because Americans like to blame state and government for everything bad that happens it kinda made sense in American context.
I just watched this film, and oh my GODS the feels...
I swear, the older I get and the more I watch this movie, the more emotional I get during it.
+Tess1061 same here!!! For me I believe it's because I can understand the themes in a deeper context than when I was a kid lol
this movie makes me hate humans
Saw it when I was just getting into anime and I fell in love with my favorite movie of all time, Spirited Away
So I started researching more about Miyazaki and I realized “wait, I remember seeing Kiki’s Delivery Service when I was in Pre-K!”; little did I know I was already introduced to Miyazaki without even realizing it
Then I found this masterpiece and my god, no matter how many times I’ve seen it; let alone any Studio Ghibli film by Miyazaki; I always get that feeling of wonder, adventure, beauty and so much more
No matter how old I get, these movies shall continue to grow as big as a tree and age with grace for generations to come

The trumpets from 5:04 to 5:15 are so ... commanding, so regal, so epic. Reminds me of watching epics with my grandparents during a holiday, the whole evening devoted to it.
this is so true and such a good way of phrasing it 😭 thanks for sharing a beautiful memory!
Hayao Miyazaki's Magnum Opus, in my opinion. Yes, there is Spirited Away, but there's smth that keeps me going back and back to Princess Mononoke.
It's my favorite animated film ever.
U need to see Manga version of Nausicaa
I think that this theme represents ashitaka’s soul. Somehow, he knew his fate and he just accepted it even knowing that it may cost his life. He had to face other’s conflict and did it as better as he could without any doubt. What a sense of justice, man! I’ve learnt a lot from him and from every character, the film is amazing its soundtrack too and as nature’s friend and as a human it makes my heart fulfilled.
I love this movie so much. This song and the rest of the soundtrack just adds to the beauty. You can really hear the beauty of nature and the majesty and intensity of the adventure that Ashitaka experiences in the film. You can almost hear his love for San in some parts as well. Just magical, wonderful work Joe.
FANTASTIC movie. EPIC soundtrack. It really is amazing and really hard to describe it.
Even my laptop become teary while I play this song.
No matter how much I listened to this song, I will always get goosebumps.
Best ghibli movie of all time.

The entire series OOT onwards was inspired by this movie, if you ask me.
@@emilyrasputin Go watch Good Blood's video essay on Ocarina of Time; apart from having the best production quality of any UA-cam video i've ever seen, it also goes to show how the series and Mononoke share an underlying theme.
I've seen this movie for the first time yesterday and instantly fell in love with it. Such a great movie.
I remember I was quite Young when I first saw Princess Mononoke. It terrified me and yet left me in awe. Hayao Miyazaki is truly a master storyteller. I haven't had the honor to watch all of his Works yet but so far everyone that I have watched is brilliant. Princess Mononoke has to be one of my ultimate favorites. It's the first Studio Ghibli film I ever watched. That was over 20 years ago. In both the Japanese and English voice actors did a phenomenal job. To me it matters not what version you watch
This movie is older than me. I pay respects with my entire keyboard to Ghibli Studios and it's soundtracks.
This movies changed my mind the first time I saw them, and every time after that. Even if that was around 15-16 years, I'll keep them in mind forever, or at least, until I die
I'm reading the comments and all of them are at least a year old, it's refreshing to see some new ones lol
@@emilyzhang5837 haha right
I don’t understand why in school we learn about Mozart and Beethoven for their music. While Joe Hisaishi is slapping breathtaking, astonishing, masterpieces of the beauty of music in Japan.
Whens the last time you had to learn about mozart in school💀
@@luke.5948 heheh true tho
You do not get Hisaishi without Mozart, Beethoven and the many composers that came between then and 1997
This is my favourite film of all time. An absolute masterpiece. Nothing has come even remotely close to beating it. What a fantastic experience it was watching this for the first time as a little kid and being both disturbed and intrigued. It's given me this satisfied feeling that has never left me. Films are pretty shit for the most part right now, so I'm glad I still have this and the rest of Ghibli.
This movie made me learn more about conflicts than any article I guess
Just one of the most beautiful musical scores I’ve ever heard. Just Brilliant!
Such fond memories of seeing this film for the first time. A cool summer night in the first Covid lockdown, the relief I felt realising there was still another hour left. I love almost all of the Ghibli films that I've seen, but this one is special for me.
Who ever reads this, you should do yourself a favour and listen to the soundtrack of this movie while taking a walk through the woods. Shit is the most breathtaking experience ever. Makes you feel like you’re in the movie.
Finally found the ending theme for Princess Mononoke!!!
This was my favorite piece of music from this movie! And I am delighted to find out it is Ashitaka's theme!
So emotionally triumphant like out of a tragedy! This orchestra did it beautifully!
The part at 1:27 really hit me! Especially because it reminded me of a part from The Hunger Games theme (at 3:22 in that song)! So glad I realized it last night after watching Princess Mononoke on March 29, 2022!! Such a beautiful and mesmerizing movie!!!!
Ashitaka, expelled from his tribe, dwells into the unknown, finds something of value, saves the princes, defeats the meta evil of hatred, restores the city. Hero confirmed. Conclusion, those who adventure to troubleshoot things end with something meaningfull in life. Sorted: Pace Out (?)
Gustavo Boschiazzo evil is hardly 'Meta'
Expelled? They fared him well on his journey to lift the curse from him. It wasn't like he was banished
@@boop99 He did got banished, its because of the law of their tribe, he can no longer go back, they were also forbidden to know what happened to him and to just accept that he is now "dead", Kaya (his former wife) said goodbye one last time knowing that he can no longer be with her and gave him a gift to remember her.
He made the choice to leave, but once he did, he was forbidden to return. The reason is probably because he could (intentionally or not) lead others back to his home and his people would be exterminated. Jigo mentions the Emishi were supposedly wiped out centuries ago, so it's implied someone would return to finish the job.

Finally, I've known the name.
GOOSEBUMPS.. ARE EVERYWHERE.
And teardrops..
There's no way I see this movie and not sob. This is a masterpiece. The greatest example of a hero's journey. With a hero of a true hearth. It's absolutely outstanding
This music is so emotionally powerful, it's genius in that it accurately reflects the soul of this film. Love cures, that's what I learned from this film.
Epic orchestral music at its finest what a masterpiece of an original soundtrack for a legendary anime movie
Goosebumps & Tearsrops ❤
Ashitaka is my favorite character in this movie. Him and his theme are so badass.Him being shot with a small shell and STILL has the strength to keep walking and push open a gate? Definte baddass.
And he is the only character in the whole title story who have completely have stealing the show from start to finish.
I was on 4K version of Princess Mononoke in cinema four months ago, something beautiful.
This song and the movie were amazing, the boars did scare the shit out of me, but the music and visuals are just so good i kept rewatching it and now everytime i hear music similar to this im almost brought to tears

1:54 , 3:26 and 4:02 are just pure beauty to listen to. Mr. Hisaishi, who gave you permission to be this good?!
"In ancient times, the land lay covered in forests where, from ages long past, dwelled the spirits of the Gods. Back then, man and beast lived in harmony, but as time went by, most of the great forests were destroyed. Those that remained were guarded by gigantic beasts who owed their allegiance to the Great Forest Spirit. For these were the days of Gods... and of *Demons*."
When I first watched this movie I was about 12 years old and it was great but it also scared the snot out of me but that was about 5 or 6 years ago but now days I love watching it when ever I get the chance to.

My great aunt gave me the DVD for this movie when I was a little girl and it became my favorite movie of all time. While I usually listen to Williams or Shore, Hisaishi is a truly underrated gem!
in what universe is Hisaishi underrated?
@@jan_loathlove I mean, in comparison. Actually, many people know about Williams and he's deeply grounded in western music culture.
