How To Rig the Rubber Band Sinker Rig | Giant Bluefin Tuna

- Continuing my series on fishing big saltwater species like yellowtail and tuna, this video walks you through the steps of rigging up the Rubber Band Sinker Rig for Giant Tuna.
In addition to Poppers and Erratic Fall Jigs, the Sinker Rig is a very effective way to fish for giant bluefin tuna. It is an easy way to get your bait down deep where the fish are without adding any knots to your line.
This technique only requires the heavy duty set up you want to use, rubber bands and your torpedo sinker.
My go-to set-up for fishing the rubber band sinker rig is the same set up I am fishing with the Erratic Fall jigs. A Makaira 30 size reel matched up with a PCH XXXH Rail rod. I have spooled up with 80lb braid and a 100lb Fluoro-Stretch Fluorocarbon leader.

I have also used them to make 3 way rigs and these work perfectly. Haven't had any issues with them snagging in rocks or in weeds yet.

I usually hook my baits through the bottom jaw and out the top of the nose cartilage. It keeps the mouth shut while the lead is yanking them down at full throttle, helps keep the bait a little fresher. If you ever pull your sardine up and it's mouth is stuck wide open that's from the deep drop.

My PB bft was this exact setup. When everyone else was working the flat fall, I pinned a mackerel on a 4 oz. sinker rig, fly line.....boom!
It’s so darn effective. I always have a pouch of rubber bands in my tackle bag just for that reason.
@@DaveysWorldFishing Is the sinker rig set up effective for night time fishing too or is it more effective for use when there's light out? I wanted to try sinker rig on my last trip but when I asked one of the deckhands he didn't recommend it due to the advantage of the glow on the jigs when being dropped 2-300 ft.
@@slixxster5118 That’s a pretty interesting comment from the deck hand. I’ve been in some epic night time sinker rig action. It’s definitely not a daytime only rig. The glow jigs obviously work incredible, but I’ve also had some fantastic dark bites on the Katy Perry and Red/Gold.
That all said, I’d never hesitate to drop the sinker at night. If the big fish are keyed in on sardines and Chevy, they do t glow. Just my opinion though. Good luck out there.

I have heard about that new sinker rig where it like a drop shot rig for bass.the sinker is on the bottom hook is tied to the main line with the sinker about 24inchs below the hook.

I generally do not use a swivel. I always think the less knots and points of failure the better.
Great Video! Does the length of leader line matter?? What is the most effective length of the leader??
Hi there. First off, thank you for watching. As far as leader length goes, I like to with a length shorter than my rod. Something in the 4-5’ range or maybe a full arm length. I like to have no knots going through guides. That is just a personal preference and it works well for me. Some anglers like to go quite a bit longer. Not sure if there is a perfect length.
The way I see it, I am usually fishing the sinker rig at night on on deep drops so the fish are a little less line shy.

In general, a sinker rig is dropped straight down. The captain will tell you that the fish are down 180 feet, so you want to drop down as quickly as possible to that depth. No casting.
Great video. I attach my weight exactly as you described in your video. I nose hook my sardine as well. Often however when I change my bait, I find my sardine has twisted completely above the weight. When lowering the weight and bait, should I be going slower rather than just letting the weight go?

I like to go somewhat slow on the drop. If you just free spool it on down you will see some twisting. If there is some current, or the boat is still on the slide you will see less twisting as the bait is out behind, but once the boat is equal to the current, I certainly slow down. Key is to present the liveliest bait possible to those hungry tuna. And slowing down certainly helps.

Great question. I will usually thumb my line down and let it fall pretty freely. I wouldn’t say there is an exact speed but pretty freely. Those schools of fish are moving pretty fast and you want to get it to them as quick as possible.

Hi J- it totally depends on the size of the bait and what the fish are keyed in on. A lot of folks go to the tank and grab the biggest, liveliest bait in the well, but if the fish are keyed in on small bait, this dies you no good.
I will usually have with me, from smallest to largest:
4, 2, 1, 1/0, 2/0, 3/0 and 5/0. The hooks you will use most will probably be the 1-2/0 sizes. Ask the deckhand what they recommend. They’ll know what bait you have and get you set up. They want you to catch fish.
@@DaveysWorldFishing I fish out of long island NY. We're using butterfish, spot, small snapper bluefish for tuna. Those hooks seem pretty small how big a fish will you land on that size hook ? I don't have a ton of experience
@@jfisher101 We’ll catch big fish on them. Right now, 200lb bluefin are not uncommon on those size hooks.
Out on the west coast we are using anchovy, sardine and mackerel for bait.

Nice setup and thanks for the tips! I have a Mak20IISea paired with a PCH XXXH. Also have a Fathom 60NL2 and Fathom 40NLD2 loaded with 100lb and 80lb braid, respectively. The next heaviest rod I have is a Phenix Black Diamond 700XH (30-80). Do you prefer the sinker rig on your heaviest setup? And in my case, would you fish a 300-500g knife/flatfall jig on either of the Fathoms matched to the 700XH? The next heaviest rods down from that are a Daiwa Saltiga conventional travel (30-50) and then a Lamiglas (25-50 - not sure I'd want to use this as there's a short foregrip on it though). TIA!

I generally use my heaviest rod for both my heavy knife jigs as well as my sinker rig set up. Since both don’t necessarily rely on “feel” I always figure the heavier the better. On the lighter, shorter foregrip rods, I’d probably use them on live bait set ups.

How are you connecting your braid main line to Fluor leader on that sinker rig?
I will generally use the FG Knot in my heavy line set ups.
I basically use three connections, depending on my applications. Alberto, Uni-Uni or FG.

Hi Dewayne. Thank you for watching. Top shot is a personal preference. Some people swear by it, some don’t. I personally don’t use it. On the sinker rig you are generally fishing deep or at night, so line visibility isn’t much of an issue.

Your going the chaif up your line on the sinker. Better off using black tape doubled over as a quick release and 3 feet from the sinker is way to little we use at least 15 more like 25 out here on the East coast.
Interesting idea. Haven’t had any chafing issues, but I do like the tape idea.
Waste of time. Go to Home Deport or any hardware store and buy a packet of 1/4 x 1 inch cork or rubber stoppers. About a dollar for 10 of em. Loop the line in one eye, insert the plug, repeat on the other end. Holds sinker in place, will not damage your line. Doing it since the 70's.

@@campinnfishin963 Not that Im aware, but maybe I can post one. Been doin' that way since the 1970's. Take a torpedo sinke with the "eyes" at each end. make a U shaped loop in your line and put it in one of the eyes. Insert the cork or stopper. Repeat on the other end. I have also used 10 oz eggs sinkers on my Bluefin "bait" set ups. A little more complicated but: Take a 10 oz egg sinker. Take a hacksaw and saw thru one side of the sinker. Soft lead, takes about 10 seconds. Use the core from any size rubber core sinker and you have a 10 oz rubber core that is ez on ez off.
