Cesar is my Obi Wan Tuna Jedi master. Thanks for another great “fishing academy” video. I always wanted to learn how to properly shoulder hook a fish. 🤙🏼
I’ve been doing the RP knot (Improved Albright Knot) for my braid to mono/fluoro connection for years. And the Surgeons knot for about a year for mono to fluoro, but this Seaguar knot is definitely going to be replacing the Surgeons knot for me from here on!
I just wanted to say thank you, you have helped me expand my fishing knowledge. When I tell my friends about your videos they look up your channel and expect a normal dude who films his fishing. No, you help teach me and others about how to catch fish. And even though I’m just a kid I think that your videos are going to help me catch 4x the fish. Thank you!
Always happy to share and help wherever I can! Thank you for the kind words, very much appreciated! If you ever have any ideas or subjects you think I should touch base on, please do not hesitate to ask! Open to any ideas!
Nice video and great info. I will take your suggestions and apply them over here on the East Coast nothing under 50lbs line, more like 80lb, our tunas run in the 50lb-100+lb so 20lb lines won't work for the tunas. But we don't use live bait much here, just chunk and jiggs. we also have to have a 100 yard mono top shot on head boats.
Wow, outstanding video. Absolutely brilliant, this may be the best fly lining instruction ever. This should be shown at the start of all long-range trips. Perhaps a video on how to behave on a party boat, what to do and what not to do from a skipper's point of view.

@@Dirty.Hookers yeah, normally I run straight braid to a 3 foot leader, but mono makes sense. Already put topshots on my reels. Even the bait hooking under the bone was 👌
Thanks Ray and Cesar. Great video and very informative. Chapstick and the butt hook parallel to body are definitely two tricks I am eager to try on my next trip!
I learned some knew knots that I will probably apply to my daily use. A video I would like to see is one going over your entire bluefin arsenal and what you like and use each setup for. I love your videos and have learned so much from watching them.

I really really enjoyed this video. I've learned a lot of little details that will definitely make a difference. I really liked where Cesar talks about heavy fluorocarbon to light mono making a huge difference.
I never would’ve thought to do that without him telling me that trick, but I really like it! So much great info, so glad he was willing to do this video!
As a newbie, planning my first tuna trip, this video was epic! Learned so much with so much more to learn. I'M HOOKED!! Thanks for putting this together, Cheers!

The most valuable thing I learned from this video is definitely the knots. I’ve been looking for a good mono to fluoro connection that is both strong and easy to tie and I’ve finally found it! The loop knot has always intimidated me for some reason but this was the best explanation on how to tie it that I’ve ever seen. In the future, I’d like to see gear reviews if possible. In the past, you kinda did this with the Lexa; now I’d like to see how your other reels perform and hold up and which you’d recommend to people
I’ll do my best to cover some videos like that in the future! It would be cool to go over what reels I recommend for what types of fishing. Thank you for the idea, and feedback. Very much appreciated!
This is hands down the best and most informative video I’ve watched yet on this subject.. I’ve always scoffed at braid to mono to fluoro thinking there’s too many connections with not enough purpose.. and surprise! I’m the guy on the rail getting broken off over and over on light line.. with a new knot learned I’m rethinking my whole approach to flylining (already re-gearing my tackle), and hooking the bait in-line with the bait body under the fin bone is something I would have never done on my own.. I have yet to see/hear anyone else doing this.. can’t wait to try it out on the next trip! Awesome segment! Keep em’ coming guys! I’m hooked!! (Pun intended)
Hopefully will be doing a lot more tackle talk videos throughout this year! I do have a fully playlist of different tackle talks, some also with Cesar as well!

Thank you for another awesome video! I learned a lot about braid vs mono and the pros and cons of them. That was super helpful and answered a lot of questions. Keep the awesome tutorials coming!
I had a great experience with the Finicky Flyline! The advice provided was excellent, and I learned some new methods that I'm excited to try out. In fact, I was so impressed that I just ordered some chapstick to make sure I'm fully prepared for my next fishing trip. The demonstration of hooking the bait and tying the knot from lighter line to a heavier leader was especially helpful. Despite having been fishing for seven years, I had never come across such a effective belly hook technique before. Thank you for the valuable information, and I wish everyone good luck and tight lines!
1:47 Tying the Seaguar Knot for a F-50# to M-25# I believe is going to be a game changer for getting bit! I did a screen record and added it to my Fishing Photo Album so I can always be able to access the info out on the water to enable tying the knot correctly. I also loved the Chapstick addition. I would like to learn more about when to fish which lure. From ghost popper to flat fall to Stick bait. Thanks! 👍🏼
Assume Video!!Thanks for putting this together. As a newbie planning my first tuna trip, I learned so much and cant wait to learn more! Great info like this lessens the "tuna" mystery. Cheers!!
I learned the whip flash of the bait having the softer rod tip to not stun the bait. Thanks ray love the videos about you knowledge and others to help everyone.

greatest, simplist, and most informative video .... ever! .... been fishing offshore almost 3 years .... tuna, yellowtail, dorado .... captain of first boat i was on, best finess flyliner I have ever seen ... gave me about 10 minutes of instruction ... patience, lighter line and smaller hooks .... all he used were #1 and #2 flyliner hooks ... he used about a 100 feet of 25 or 30# flouro ... I have had a lot of success . definately will have seaguar gold label bite leader ... 50# flouro ... directly to my 25 and 30# mono or flouro topshot leader. Will give me the confidence to pitch into some bigger fish .... and land them .... not just to hook them!! thanks ... curtis
Glad you found so much use for future success with from this video! Also thank you for sharing your personal experience and knowledge! Much appreciated
Funny thing about the seagaur knot, I decided to try it one day and totally forgot, caught multiple tuna and yellows to 15 pounds, bounced every single fish thinking I was fishing straight mono, end of the day I looked at the rod, realized I was fishing a leader and decided I trusted the knot 100% from then on out
Theoretically speaking here; I thought we were fishing 25lb flouro because the tuna can see the line. Wouldn’t the 50lb bite guard be more visible in the water?
Most interesting I learned from this vid was using the chapstick for lubricating the knot… never thought of that but I have seen some tackle shops do it. Would love to see a vid on night jigging on the next tackle talk
It was actually really impressive seeing how much better and cleaner the connection knot synched down over using moisture as the lubricant! I did film a Bluefin Jigging Seminar acouple months back, lmk if there’s any other topics you’d like us to touch base on! ua-cam.com/video/Ul5FLB2dFgQ/v-deo.htmlsi=NEXzjSlWGANnRvVb
Always good to get new tips and knowledge. Will definitely be trying these tips. Especially curious to try and hook a bait in line with the body instead of across
Glad you were able to gain some value from this video! I’ve been using the loop knot for the last 2 years while fly lining, and I love how much freedom it gives the bait without having a ringed hook!
Ive learned alot watching your videos and now i will definitely be trying/using light line with a heavier leader as a bite guard. Your videos are always informative. Thank you for the time and dedication you put into your content.
Thank you so much for the kind words! There’s not a whole lot of people who really understand how much work goes behind the computer, so hearing this really means a lot! Thank you 👊🤝
I learned all the different line sizes and the hook sizes. I always knew this was important but never really knew the specifics. I would love to see another tackle breakdown about your arsenal and what you like each setup for. Love the vids keep making them.
I definitely will have to do a new updated version of an offshore arseanl video! I covered all my set ups I take off shore in this video, but I’ll do an update this next year! ua-cam.com/video/gevNj2Y1Ep8/v-deo.htmlsi=btzlsdhH4c2roi7Q
Every time I watch your videos I learn something knew. In this video I learned some knew knots that I can definitely trust more than a clench knot😅. I really like your vids and would like to see a video of you breaking down your tuna arsenal and what you like each setup for and it’s capabilities.
If you go through my “Tackle Talk” playlist I do cover a lot of “what’s working right now” videos, and most of them stay nearly the same tackle just to get a ball park. But hopefully in a future video I can cover an updated version!
Great tips all around. The mono to fluouro and braid to fluoro debate is never-ending. Nice job on the closeup of the knot tying and I will def be trying out the chapstick trick.
I learned a new knot for mono to flouro connection and learned that during a finicky bite, even the sound of the rattle is important depending on wether you get bit or not. I hope to see hopefully some lighter tackle / calico and sand bass related videos, overall awesome video Ray, very knowledgeable!
I’ve also been using the double uni, but my recent trip really put the pressure on that knot coming in and almost lost fish with it catching on the eyelets. Since then changed to the Alberto knot. I’ll definitely work that new knot you guys went over. Also, can’t agree more about glass rods…my 90J gets that bait right where I want it 😁 Keep up the great content 🤙
Yeah the double uni is just a little too bulky for my likings. Surgeons knot was my new go to, but this Seaguar knot definitely is now my go to mono to fluoro connection knot. Thanks for the kind words man, much appreciated!
Hoping to try and cover tackle talks for all types and styles of fishing throughout the future. If you ever have any questions, suggestions on rigs, or types of fish you’d like us to cover, please do not hesitate to ask!
Chapstick is a completely new concept for me and I always questioned if saliva was enough lubrication to prevent damage to the line. Comprehensive guide on hooking the bait was more than helpful. I will be hooking like that going forward. Thank you for sharing this
The bite guard is actually crazy good advice, definitely gonna try that now so I don’t get chewed off. It works for knife jigs so hopefully it works with bait too
I loved the whole video. I've always run a super long top shot, but not knowing how beneficial it was. Thanks for the explanation. Also the "getting bit firts, and then worrying about landing the fish" comment. Makes total sense. I'll be looking for a glass rod for fly lining now
Thank you for the info, the reasons he hooks bait where he does makes total sense and i have never seen that. Also the rod information I needed to hear because i am looking for a new set up
I had never seen that fin hook trick either, I can’t wait to try that out next season! Glad this video was helpful for you, thank you for the feedback!
I struggle when casting a medium sized sardine on my Okuma Cavalla 5N with 20# mainline and a 3 foot floro leader. Used a bunch of different brand braids and the issue remains, simply cannot cast further than 8 feet from the boat (rod is 7 feet, medium heavy graphite). I've been given many different answers by many knowledgable anglers: 1) mainline braid sticks to itself too much to cast such a light bait, 2) rod not long or flexable enough, 3) leverdrag reels suck at flylining compared to star drag or spinning reels, 4) it's "normal" to only cast 8 feet max with flyline. I bought a few rubber baits the same size and weight as medium sardines. Casted the baits in a park with baitcaster reels and got a 20 yard distance on average. Would hate to have to give up on leverdrag reels though for flylining, they're so convenient if you're pro enough to calibrate your drag before setting sail.
There’s no need to retire your lever drag, lever drags still work fine. The only issue, is by not being able to have a pre set free spool like a star drag, it’s easier to backlash your reel. When casting a live bait, it just takes A LOT of practice. 20yds is a pretty good cast for a live bait. Just takes practice. Took me about a year or so to comfortably cast a belly hooked bait, and am always looking for new tricks or tips to improve
Awesome video , this season I caught my first Bluefin tuna and wish I knew about Seaguar knot & the chap stick trick . Also I was using Circle hooks wish I used j hooks instead. Thanks for all tips keep the videos coming.
I wish I knew all of these small tips earlier this season too, I’ll just have to wait till next year to try it all out! Circle hooks still work fine, just takes more time hooking the bait. I personally prefer circle hooks for tuna fishing
Thanks Ray and Cesar. Great video. I learned at least 3 new tactics that I'll be adding to my arsenal. I'll start with a longer Mono top shot and change my live bait hooking method. Great job Cesar. I hope to see more of you in the future. Maybe show us how you catch Calico's off the rocks. :)
Thank you for the feedback! So much great info provided in this video, I can’t wait to try some of these new tips next season! Possibly, just covering calico fishing overall, but off the rocks is a little tougher just because you have to cover a lot of ground
This was a great video. I am going to learn the two knots and also try the longer mono. With a short heavy floracarbon. I had heard of using chapstick but always forget about using it. Also have alot of star drags that I never really use. I do use softer tip rods. The hooking baits makes perfect sense I can't wait to try all the tips in this video.
Thank you for the feedback! So bummed my season was coming to an end when we filmed this lol. Now I have to wait till next season to try all these new tricks
Love the loop knot, thanks for the clear instructions, going to save me a lot of money from buying ringed hooks. Very good thorough video, maybe next time show the best way to cast the bait?
Awesome video. Definitely will be applying what I learned in this. Mono top shot to heavier flouro leader is new to me. Also, loved the explanation on how to properly hook the bait. I’m surprised you didn’t the specific Phenix Rod you recommend.
Thank you for the feedback, very appreciated! Even though we both fish for phenix, we never feel the need to push product at anyone like a salesman. Everyone has their own preference when it comes to name brand, so covering the basics of what rod one should be looking for was more important
I really wish I knew these things before all of my trips this season lol. I’ll be ready for next year though! Really excited to test out these new tips and trips
Yeah, all of the east coast definitely focuses more on spinning tackle I’ve noticed. If I were to fly line with a spinning reel, I’d definitely try a bait runner style reel. Something that you don’t have to leave the bail open. Also, I’d definitely keep the line running through my fingers, so that way if I feel the bait stop swimming I can give the line a little tug (in replace of back spooling the slack), and get that bait swimming again.
Nice informative video! Cesar did a great presentation and very clear instructions. What I learned in this video. I learned the ease and quickness of the seagur knote versus the surgeons knot. I will be switching over AND using that CHAPSTICK!!! I learned about the value of using a star drag power reel versus a high speed reel. I learned the difference of using a softer moderate rod versus a fast rod. Maybe my favorite learning was the butt hook!!! I will definitely be adopting some of Cesar’s methods.
Thanks for the loop knot! Great video and info! I would have to disagree about using circle hooks. If I'm fishing for bluefin tuna with bait I always use circle hooks. Yellowfin tuna or other fish I always use J hooks. Bluefin just have much sharper teeth, in my opinion, to where I have seen a lot of bite-offs with bluefin. Thanks again!
I’ve been fishing for 50 years, and you guys taught me things I will use the rest of my fishing career. You are one of the best instructors I have watched in quiet sometime. Thanks and keep the instructional videos coming!!!

Really glad Cesar was willing to take the time to share some knowledge with the rest of us.
I learned a lot from this video from the chapstick trick to the way he hooks the bait in the belly thanks for the good content 🤙
Thank you for the feedback! Really glad you found so much value from this video!
Learned a new knot and the new fin hook. Going to have to try this new technique out! Great instructional video!
Thank you! I can’t wait for next season, I really wanna try that fin hook trick!
Cheers!!
Hope you get to put these new tips and tricks to test this season! Best of luck to you this year!👊
I learned the whip flash of the bait having the softer rod tip to not stun the bait. Thanks ray love the videos about you knowledge and others to help everyone.
Thank you for the kind words and continued support! Really appreciate it!
Absolutely great tutorial. Step by step. Thank you so much. And waiting for a new ones.
Thank you for the feedback and kind words!
Definitely will be putting out some more future tackle talks for all different kinds of fishing
Its my first year fishing i got really into it going on my first 1.5 day in 2 weeks cant wait to put everything ive have learned with your channel i been watching all your videos religiously lately to learn more about what iama need for this trip
Awesome video. Wish I would have seen this sooner. I never knew about the chapstick method for cinching a knot. Great idea Thanks D.H.and Caesar!!!
Happy to share! I too wish I knew about this sooner, but I’ll be ready for this season!
@@Dirty.Hookers I am a new subscriber to your channel from the Bay Area. It’s a whole different animal going out of San Diego for BFT. I met Mikey at Point Loma from his Fish n Sips channel. He’s a cool dude. Hope to meet you one day.
@@jaimefernandez3076 hopefully we’ll get to cross paths and share the rail in the future!
Tuna in general are a whole nother ball game to target, but I do agree some of these bluefin are just MEAN!
greatest, simplist, and most informative video .... ever! .... been fishing offshore almost 3 years .... tuna, yellowtail, dorado .... captain of first boat i was on, best finess flyliner I have ever seen ... gave me about 10 minutes of instruction ... patience, lighter line and smaller hooks .... all he used were #1 and #2 flyliner hooks ... he used about a 100 feet of 25 or 30# flouro ...
The knots are a good trick I am going to remember to do when thing get finicky. Thanks guys for the tricks
Happy to share. I can’t wait to try out some of these tricks next season!
That chapstick method was super cool to learn about and I hope to see more fishing seminars in the future
That was very helpful for me just starting out tuna fishing. Would love to join you for a on the water seminar
Really hoping we can do something like that in the near future! It would be super beneficial to show how to work a bait, and the dos and don’ts
Funny thing about the seagaur knot, I decided to try it one day and totally forgot, caught multiple tuna and yellows to 15 pounds, bounced every single fish thinking I was fishing straight mono, end of the day I looked at the rod, realized I was fishing a leader and decided I trusted the knot 100% from then on out
Great video! Loved the chapstick trick , the flouro knot I’m going to practice a lot before next season . Thanks for the tips videos they really help.
Such a good trick, I was really impressed with how much better it sinches down than with moisture as a lubricant!
Great info. Love the comments on the rods and the belly hook.
Thank you! Yeah that fin hook trick is gonna be game changing!
Can’t wait to try that out next season.
Theoretically speaking here; I thought we were fishing 25lb flouro because the tuna can see the line. Wouldn’t the 50lb bite guard be more visible in the water?
Not in fluoro
Most interesting I learned from this vid was using the chapstick for lubricating the knot… never thought of that but I have seen some tackle shops do it.
Would love to see a vid on night jigging on the next tackle talk
It was actually really impressive seeing how much better and cleaner the connection knot synched down over using moisture as the lubricant!
I did film a Bluefin Jigging Seminar acouple months back, lmk if there’s any other topics you’d like us to touch base on!

Always good to get new tips and knowledge. Will definitely be trying these tips. Especially curious to try and hook a bait in line with the body instead of across
I’m really excited to try out that trick! I always went sideways through the belly, I think in-line is going to be game changing!
Second time i watched this, so informational. Thank for a great video on flylining.
Thank you for coming back for a second round!
Really appreciate the kind words, thank you!
Excellent video! Wow! I learned that I should use a loop knot as opposed to a snell which I've always used. Thanks for the tips!
Glad you were able to gain some value from this video!
I’ve been using the loop knot for the last 2 years while fly lining, and I love how much freedom it gives the bait without having a ringed hook!
What would be a good composite rod with a soft tip? Looking for a 8ft (20-50lb) set-up for casting bait. Perhaps Phenix has a rod that fits the bill?
Great video, keep them coming, learned some new knots, awesome content
Happy to share! Hoping to keep capitalizing on these tackle talks for any style of fishing we can think of!
Thank you for your feedback
Ive learned alot watching your videos and now i will definitely be trying/using light line with a heavier leader as a bite guard. Your videos are always informative. Thank you for the time and dedication you put into your content.
Thank you so much for the kind words!
There’s not a whole lot of people who really understand how much work goes behind the computer, so hearing this really means a lot!
Thank you 👊🤝
Love these seminar videos! I will be trying out the Seaguar knot on my next trip, can't forget the chap stick!
Dude,I've always had trouble with hooking live bait. You have made it very clear..thanks my man..much appreciated!!!!!!
Really glad you were able to find some value out of this! Hope you get to put these tips to the test soon!
Great video! Good to know about the long mono main line, star drag reels, light main to thicker fluoro, and soft rod tips! Very good info!
Glad this video helped you learn so much!
Thank you for the feedback, happy to share.
Excellent informative video. Always learning something new.
Really appreciate that, thank you for the feedback!
Amazing info Ray, definitely using the lighter mono to heavy top shot and the knot 👍🏼
The Seaguar knot is game changing! It’s impressive how well it holds for lines of such big differences in sizes
Thank you for the feedback and the idea! I’ll definitely try to see what I can put together for bass fishing in the future!
thanks! Looking fowards to them!@@Dirty.Hookers
New fisherman here. Just had my first bluefin excursion. A bust. Wish I had watched this first. Love all the content.
Learned a new knott !!! Can we get a video talking about lures that work for other dish than tuna.
Hoping to try and cover tackle talks for all types and styles of fishing throughout the future.
If you ever have any questions, suggestions on rigs, or types of fish you’d like us to cover, please do not hesitate to ask!
Great videos bud. I really appreciate the gear and tackle tip videos. Really hoping for some of those on the boat seminars.
It works for knife jigs so hopefully it works with bait too
Such a helpful tip, and the Seaguar knot really helps for connecting a heavier line to a lighter line!
I loved the whole video.
I've always run a super long top shot, but not knowing how beneficial it was. Thanks for the explanation.
Also the "getting bit firts, and then worrying about landing the fish" comment. Makes total sense. I'll be looking for a glass rod for fly lining now
Really glad you found value from this!
I learned so much about fly lining from Cesar this night, can’t wait to try out these new tricks next season
I have never fished on the west Coast, so all of this information was new and useful to me.
Definitely trying Seaguar on my next trip. Hopefully I get bit. Great video!
Thank you, hope it works out for you!
Such a fast and easy knot, definitely going to be my go to connection knot from here on!
Definitely going to try the Seaguar Knot on my next trip. Thanks !!
Happy to share, and I was truly shocked how strong that knot holds up! Super easy and quick too
This was a great video.
Thanks, I am absolutely setting up my Single Speed Star Drag Saltiga for fly line fishing.
I love my Saltiga star drag for fly line and casting! Such a nice reel
Learned a lot from this especially after getting skunk hit on my last trip. All the items covered were things I wish I knew.
I really wish I knew these things before all of my trips this season lol. I’ll be ready for next year though! Really excited to test out these new tips and trips
I learned a new knot and why to use wax with floor lines nice presentation good information
I started to try the chapstick for lubricant trick over the last couple weeks with fishing, and its amazing how much better it synchs down!
Dudes this is good stuff especially on how to hook a bait I feel like I'm going to be a master at it
Such good info! Can’t wait to try all these new tips out next season. That fin hook trick is going to be game changing!
Solid video 💪🏼
Wow, learned a lot. It’s the small details that matter. Im definitely gonna swap try the the segar knot and loop knot.
The small details that differ you from the rest of the Anglers on board is always a big added bonus!
love this video. Here in northwest FloridaI spinning reels dominate. I am wondering how this could done effectively with a spinner
Always love watching these to learn more techniques. Mosdef gona try that loop knot instead of a ringed hook!
Doing almost everything in this video except that belly hook. Very useful
Such good info! Can't wait to try all these tips I haven't been using
Great lessons makes so much sense best lesson s I’ve had in along time
Definitely the best seminar I’ve been able to sit in on and learn from!
