Downloaded it just now while watching your video. Thank very much! Would definitely put Dresden Files on top my TBR list now because I am a sucker for detective stories.
Already interested to see once you hit books 10+. There are enough stakes for ALL the vampires. I can also highly recommend reading the DF short story anthologies, they give you a very different view on Harry through the eyes of several other characters. I'd recommend picking up Side Jobs either after reading Changes (Book 12).
Oh man, what awaits you... Also smart to get into it now; Jim Butchers going to publish his newest book soon after a kindof hiatus (which was fair ofc, RL happens and he still did stuff).
Seriously. I laughed. I wait with terrified anticipation to see how much higher the stakes can get. My daughter is listening to the books at work with earphones while doing data entry. I warned her she may not want to listen toe "Changes" while working. She wants to keep this job. Somewhere I've seen a video of a fan telling James Marsters how her boss caught her sobbing in front of a spread sheet and asked if she needed a personal day. Marsters said he cried while recording it, as did techies. I expect Butcher cried while writing parts.

@@shooglechic shooglechic haha, I was never really into Buffy so I'm lucky that doesn't color my visuals! Agree. I'm a huge fan. I re-listen to the entire series back to back about once a year, lol
This! I hope we see an update to this video after he catches up on the series. Changes and all the books after give this series so much more to recommend it.
But they were doughnuts of darkness. Evil, damned doughnuts, tainted by the spawn of darkness . . . . . . which could obviously be redeemed only by passing through the fiery, cleansing inferno of a wizardly digestive tract.
Yeah agree, I really like to read books but these I didn't had time too when I started Storm Front, so I went audiobook. And I have not read one of them so far, listen to all of them though. Masters is (sorry for the cheap pun) a master, and so far he has read all but one that John Glover did. And not really a spoiler but the world of Harry Dreseden gets bigger and bigger the futher into the series you get. And I do dare to say that then end scale, Butcher haven't written that far yet, might Dwarf ASoIaF. But it's one of the best bookseries out there at the moment, and as you say Daniel the characters are superb and much deeper if you start scratching the surface.
@@rettthebest A few years back, I believe. It's really good (as you'd expect) though I'm not faulting the other guy; he did a fine job but I had a certain expectation of what Harry sounds like when I starting the first Ghost Story recording.
6:46: "I can't speak to the rest of the series, I don't know if Jim Butcher has successfully continued to raise the stakes...". Oh brother, you ain't seen nothin' yet. :-)
One of my favorite aspects of Dresden is how Butcher masterfully shows us that Harry struggles with the darkness in him. I love the moments where Harry has the blinders pulled from him and every once in a while realizes that his friends sometimes worry that he's one bad day away from becoming the big bad. We know Harry is for the good and right, but his slow realization that his friends aren't always so sure is just excellent character work. And hard agree, Blood Rites is probably the worst entry. And sadly it has the best opening line, especially if you're familiar with Harry's pyrotechnic acrobatics.
I took a writing class and every day one of us had to write a sentence for everyone else to work off of. I chose that one. Turns out I was the only one in the class who had even heard of the Dresden Files. I was horrified. Everyone else was in a "writing fiction" class to become autobiographers and poets.
Well, you should read Alex Verus. The best Dresden esque series out there and it's arguably better. It's darker and I think his character development is more interesting.
Read codex alera when you get a chance. I was blown away by butchers range on it. Dresden is one of my way favorite characters out there. Butcher has fleshed him over 15 books and so many short stories. Just strap in.
Pranvat Gulati I agree. Codex Alera is a great piece and to think he wrote it when someone challenged him whether he could right something entirely different from Harry’s world and simply base the story on Pokémon and a lost Roman legion.
@@adekunlebademosi6756, it started as an argument online on whether a good story needs a good premise or if you could take a bad premise and make a good story. Jim said he would do one better and use two bad premises and write something good. When he realized he really did have something good he declined to post it online, the person he was arguing with declared victory, and Jim got a six book series published.
I love that you did this! This is one of my favorite series. I think the books ramp up in quality, at least from a tension/payoff standpoint, steadily from Dead Beats on through Changes. Keep reading, you will love them! One thing I wanted to add, was that this series does a great job with consequences. The climax of one book can be felt through the next few books and the motivations matter. Its pretty deep for a series that is as overtly "pulpy" as you say. I think its great. And the Audiobooks with James Marsters are awesome. I usually listen to one and immediately want to relisten.
I read most of this series quite a few years back, they were some of the first books I read while getting back into fantasy, and while they most assuredly have their flaws, this series is still on my favorites list. Withe Peace Talks allegedly coming out soon, I'll probably reread this series.
I also suggest the Iron Druid Chronicles for a light hearted and humorous read. It’s not so much about solving crimes but still consists of surviving the supernatural in a modern world.
@@rettthebest I know. I actually checked up on it the day before Daniel posted this video, so I took it as a sign and started the series over last night, so I have them fresh in memory when Peace Talk does come out 👌
I'm gonna have to echo some of the other comments about the audiobook. It's hard to imagine recommending most audiobooks over the actual book itself but between the brilliance of James Marsters narration and the books being 100% from Harry's point of view the feeling of seeing and feeling through Harry's eyes is turbocharged.
I think I started reading the Dresden Files around the time when the 4th book was being released, and have loved it since. No other series has made me actually laugh out loud as much as this one does. I still always crack up when I think of the time he dressed up as you-know-who for the masquerade. To me, the first 3 books were his weakest in terms of plot and predictability, but after that they got sooo much better with each and every entry.
I love The Dresden Files. Yea, there were not-so-good entries but as some one caught up, ohhhh boy do the stakes keep rising. I adore the characters and the story. I want to go to McNallys, hang out with a few members of the council and deliver pizza to the *spoiler*. Not sure I would want to live in this version of Chicago but I definitely wouldn't want to if Harry wasn't there. I am so glad you powered through Blood Rites, it really does keep getting better and better. Congrats on your sponser Daniel!
Im really happy to see you recommending this series, given that its been one of my favorites since I was young. I was somewhat disheartened by your early criticisms of series, justified though it might have been. I’m glad you haven’t let the flaws turn you off to the series as a whole, and look forward to seeing you have to say about it going forward.
Such a good take that gives credit where credit is due! I really resonate with the points about it being “comfortable”. The series is a good friend that I return to every 5 years or so.
Only 9 more books to catch up... LOL The world building really ramps up as you go along. It just keeps getting better and better as the universe grows and becomes more detailed. I will say this, to me what makes a great writer is how easily it is to read and how well it speaks to the reader. Some authors write in a way that says Look at me look how smart I am and how well I crated that sentence or paragraph... pretentious... Uggg Butcher draws you in and makes you care for the characters. Keep going and don't forget to follow up with the audio books. James Marsters really brings the characters to life and brings a whole new dimension to the series. My process so far has been to read the book then listen to the audio book. Makes for a more satisfying experience.
I absolutely cannot wait until you get to Changes. I laughed. I cried. It’s one of the best emotional roller coasters I’ve experienced in fantasy. You’re gonna love it.
I started the lightbringer series after watching a video of yours and I agree with your opinions on it. Believe me when I say the Dresden Files gets supercharged after Dead Beat and that too is one of my favorite books ever. I would try to get the audiobooks narrated by James Marsters, in my mind he is Harry Dresdens voice, the first couple have low production value but after that I find its the best way to enjoy the series, he gets the humor perfectly and embodies Dresden like no one else could. ENJOY!
I agree with pretty much everything you said here. They are very fun, quick reads where you don’t have to think about a million things as you read. They are absolutely the best filler books you read in between some of the other heavier fantasy. They are just flat fun to read.
Daniel... Ypu have no idea. Just keep reading Dresden Files. Everyone else, START reading Dresden Files. Or not. No pressure. But highly recommended. Worst thing is it is not finished yet. But new book will be out soon. Joy! :-D
Music to my ears! What I always appreciate about your channel is that you're open to changing your mind and explaining your reasons very well, not stubbornly clinging to the first impression. Thanks Daniel ;)
What a great talk up of the series, Dresden gets lots of love, but maybe not the respect the character and the series deserves, I recommend this series to everyone, because the books are consistently a rich and rewarding experience for the reader, looking forward to Peace Talks 😊
I'm so glad you're reading the series. book 6 and up is where i felt the world got a lot bigger in a very positive way. maybe post an updated review after another 6 books...?
Just find this randomly in UA-cam. On my 4th reread of the Dresden files and it is SO worth it. It just keeps getting better! So keep going. But I wanted to say I've never listened to a "this is my sponsor" speil much less clicked on your link, but Byzans sounds like just what I'm looking for. Goodreads is so... bad, from a user perspective. Looking forward to checking it out!
Totally agree with all your points about why the Dresden Files are a must read! I do want to add to your point about the "low fantasy", "palette-cleansing" aspect of the books. I love this style about them as well, and it is a tremendous selling point to me. I've read my share of high fantasy and have enjoyed a lot of it, but often you feel you need a reference book or atlas of that world because there's so much history, so many characters, such density of information that you can't keep track of it. And although after 15 novels, 2 anthologies of short stories and a number of graphic novels, Jim has built a substantial versisimiltitude with numerous characters, somehow it's still easier to keep up with them. And I admire the "low fantasy" aspect of the stories, because I love the idea that there's more to our reality than most of us know and Harry's world has to in some degree mesh and make sense in the more mundane reality. And as Harry learns, we learn -- there are great lessons in the book that are really wise, but he doesn't hit you over the head with them - about anger and fear, about the problems of power, about the pleasures and difficulties of caring relationships, about the questions of faith, doubt, and numinosity. At the same time, Harry feels like a friend I just want to hang out with -- I've been reading the series since it first came out, and sometimes I just want to visit with Harry and the gang again. If you haven't met them -- Forzare!! Go now and begin!
You should read the Codex Alera series by Jim Butcher. Great series and easy read - it’s comfortable like you said. I haven’t read the Dresden Files yet but adding to my TBR because of this video.
Picked up the first book from you recommending it on previous videos. Read it then got the rest of series after that. Dresden is extremely likeable and self deprecating as a character.
Glad to hear your enjoying the series again and starting to get why some of us love it. I cant wait to see your thought on the other books it is fun watching a first time reader of the series comment on stuff.
Harry has been a friend for many years now. I both read the books and listen to James Marsters read them to me. When I say I have often both laughed out loud and sobbed openly while making my way through the stories you'll hopefully understand that this is quite a special series of books. Currently experiencing 'Peace Talks' and have already been brought to tears 3 times.
I totally agree with you that this series is such a comfortable read and I can completely relate to you! I will also unconsciously begin reading this series after I finished a really complicated book and amazingly this series can always give me a peaceful feeling when reading it.
Thanks man, I appreciate that. Just milling about reading the discworld again and more terry Pratchett haven’t found a good book since I read Patrick rothfuss and Peter v brett so will give this a try enjoying it so far thank you so much bud !
It kind of is, except he's much thicker in the head. Sherlock can deduce things on the Fly while Dresden takes a while to piece them together. He eventually gets to the same conclusion but only after getting beat up a few times. He's the orneriness of Dirty Harry, the heart of Captain America, and the detective skills of Columbo.
It starts with him doing professional detective work. While there are still mysteries he is no longer a professional detective. More of a professional bad ass.
I just noticed Bob sitting on your bookcase! You got me to try reading the Dresden Files and I am so happy! Eight books in after 1 month! I have to finish them all so I can have my life back.
I feel Butcher doesn't get enough credit for his magic system in Dresden Files. In my opinion, it's better developed than the much-hyped magic system in Malazan. Fight me.
I'd say the utility magic is well done. There are clear rules for circles, rituals, thaumaturgy that type of stuff. And while the combat is fun I do feel like it is a bit flimsy on how hard it is. You kinda just get tired while using magic, and how much dresden can use before getting tuckered out is kinda arbitrary, especially after he gets a certain power boost.
in the case of malazan, magic is pretty much never explained at any point, you can see the effects sure, but you never see behind the curtain on "how" it got there. and i highly doubt that isnt intentional.
Wait, Malazan has a developed magic system? I've struggled through the first book, and then dropped the series. It has its intriguing parts, but overall, feels too disjointed, overly complex, and yet shallow.
5:40 As someone who has read the series a dozen times over..... I have one thing to say..... You have no idea. Oh and youre wrong about Blood Rites, so wrong. He introduces the greatest character of the series period: Mouse.
That was the first hard back. He moved it up in the sequence when his agent told that he should not have the more introspective book for the next one. " Are you telling me we are going to hardback" "No I am not telling you that, it just think you should have more action based story for the next one. Thus Dead Beat. The only book in the Dresden Files that I have listened to the audio book. After it reading it two or three times. I did not read them in order, I was reading them in the order I found them in at the library so it might have been Dead Beat that I read first. The first three were written before any had been published.
I started listening to Dresden audiobooks because you mentioned it in some top ten lists and I’m so glad! It quickly went from the first entries as pulpy-genre-junk-food to something really delightful and thematically punching-just finished Dead Beat and I was laughing and jumping up and down at the hilarious crossovers. But two things really impressed me on the writing level-Butcher manages to challenge his characters better than most authors. Dresden is always in pain and exhausted and cash strapped and about to have his fairly emotional world collapse but he also finds magic just as cools as we do and Dresden enjoys his job and quips faster than Tony Stark. It’s the perfect blend. Second, Butcher has a fine sense of when to move tone from snarky and hard boiled humor to a breathtaking wonder or horror-his descriptions of the fairy courts are visual and vivid with the genuine glow of someone who has really seen something spectacular and he takes time to chill the horrific moments. There’s humor but no bathos. It’s impressive. Also, the short stories are superb!
It's kind of amazing to hear Daniel talk about how much the series has grown and expanded ... by book 7. HE HAS NO IDEA! As one of the caught-up readers waiting for the release of book 16, remembering book 7, I can really say he damns the series with faint praise.
You’ll see it all come together in Cold Days! I’m so glad to hear that you get the underlying building of the story. I’ve read The Dresden Files so many times and I’ve listened to the audio just as many! Enjoy the journey!
The side stories that are written from other characters perspectives does a great job in exposing some of the greater world building and gives the perspective of what Harry looks like to those around him.
Let me say this. The ending of Changes was spoiled for me, and I was still blown away. In the same book, I found myself screaming angrily and fearfully at one particular scene. No other series has me yelling at a book.
This is a series that anybody can enjoy. It's well thought out and the plots are clever. It's got its own personality which makes it stand out (to me at least). Keep reading, the stories do get darker and a bit more complex. I love it. This is the series that got me back into the fantasy genre after I went on a long hiatus. But trust me when I say this: This series is going to be one of the best when all is said and done. So keep reading Daniel! And of course enjoy. (Also, I just started "The Once and Future King" and so far I'm really loving it! How is it overlooked!)
I've had the series on my To Be Read list for a while now but never prioritised it. Listened to almost the complete first book today and it's been great so far! Thanks for the recommendation.
I found the world building to be slow but very thorough, and over the course of the series it really builds up from being a low fantasty that is pretty much just the world we live in to become a very unique setting. The way it is reveled from the 1st person perspective means that often, we are learning these new depths right along with the character, rather than having exposition dumps.
I love this series! This video does the books justice and I'm excited for anyone who picks it up because of this video. Butcher is in the publishing his newest Dresden Files novel and I'm super pumped. His world building only gets better from the point in the series this video was made. I saw comments about the audiobooks being good as well. I have listened to the audiobooks multiple times because they are really just that good of a performance of the written material. So either way you choose to enter the series, you can't go wrong.
Dresden Files was my first brush with Urban Fantasy, and it's probably my favorite implementation of the genre (closely followed by the Alex Verus novella.)
You're honestly very handsome and I think that influences me a lot. My brain just goes: cute guy talking about books, yep I'm gonna assume he has authority and is legit
You'll be pleased to know that he announced last night that the final rewrite of Peace Talks is done and publishing info should be coming soon! *Fuegos in happiness*
I’m going to be starting this series as soon as I can, already have the first two books. And after watching this video, it’s definitely at the top of my list. Thanks Daniel! 😊
Female, 27 years, from Norway. I've picked up The Dresden Files thanks to you. I think that I might enjoy low fantasy more than high fantasy, but I can be wrong about it. Only time will tell. I like the blend of detective work (never read Sherlock Holmes and so on, but I might pick it up in the future), mystery and fantasy. The first book made me laugh out loud. Yes, I also appreciate the humor. I have not read a lot of fantasy, so I'm exploring the genre. Many years ago I read Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit. I enjoyed Lord of the Rings more than the Hobbit. And I've read several books of Neil Gaiman. Coraline really impressed me when I was a kid. These days Neverhwere is my favorite book of Gaiman. I like the language, the characters and the messages I get from it. I felt sad and empty when I finished the book. Currently reading Norse Mythology. Nice experience so far. I have read 5 of the Harry Potter-books. Have to wait for The Blood Prince cause someone else are loaning it from the library. I am the next in line to pick it up. My mom (52) has read all of the existing Game of Thrones-books, and she has finished the tv-series. She prefers reading crime and mystery books,, so she's not very experienced with fantasy as a genre, but she enjoys the series. She says that it's an addictive universe and that it really takes off around book number 3. She enjoys book number 1 and 2, but felt like the series got better and better from book number 3. On that note I plan to read the entire series by George R R Martin the next year. I know that it is a rich and complex world, lots of characters (I don't generally do well with that, but I'll challenge myself), drama, bloodshed and so on. I am currently watching the tv-series and I believe that I am on series 5 or 6. Mom has all the books. And I frequently use the library.
Sanderson made me laugh out loud with Shardplate poop. :) If butcher can write a joke I might have to add this to my tbr. Literal vampire stakes got me hooked.
As a female reader, I really do appreciate the way the author builds female characters within the series. I also agree with everything you've pointed out.
Would you mind elaborating a bit on that, I read the first book and felt very old school with too many cringe moments for me to really enjoy it. However it is a much beloved series, so I want to know what it is that I am missing.
I also didn’t love how women were written in the first book and it kind of kept me from picking up the second one. So how long does it take for this to get better?
@@TheFlyingBookworm The 2nd book, with some unevenness until Book 6, which is definitely the worst of them. From there, it steadily gets more solid on that front.
Agreed. Dresden is always kinda eyeroll inducing on his observations if females, but you can really see that grow later as Butcher clearly realized problems. Without spoilers, Susan, Lucio, Molly, Charity, (obviously) Murphy, and the various Sidhe women are allowed to have moments when they do completely fail but other moments where they triumph...and it's not dependent on their gender. Harry pays HARD for his thinking he has to protect women - it causes far more harm both to him and others than it ever does him any good. It's easy to just read Harry's perspective and get turned off (and the first books are...yeah), but eventually, the women are either the most dependable characters in the series or honestly the most terrifying. XD as one of the characters later says with full admiration, "tiny but FIERCE".
@@dreamchild24 the first couple books fall heavily into the noir tropes of objectifying women but it's also a major character flaw and not the author himself. Harry always needs to "protect women" even when they're an all powerful entity that can destroy a city with a thought. He gets better throughout the series but it's still a big character flaw.
Great video! Though I did initially raise my eyebrows at your distaste for Blood Rites, which I thought was wonderful. Fool Moon is the one I hold up as the weak link in the series. As it happens, I'm on a re-listen of Dead Beat, and I can't get over how much I love love love this one, mainly for the emphasis on a 'normal' character's development, and one really big moment of awesome near the end. I still have others that I think are better, but I love a lot of things about Dead Beat. I also want to echo what I'm sure others have said: the audiobooks are awesome, and are primarily the way I experience The Dresden Files. Marsters is AMAZING as the narrator, and I really want him to voice Dresden if they ever make an animated series of these books (one can hope). Again, good work. Hopefully I'll do similar suggestions/reviews if and when I get my own channel up and going. Keep it up!
My coworker recommended this book to me so I special ordered the first 2 books from my local bookstore since they were out. It came in yesterday and I started reading Storm Front. It was a page turner!! I started yesterday and finished reading it today. I'm already on book 2 Fool Moon and I'm hooked. Looks like I will special order the rest of the books from my local bookstore asap! People give the books a chance, you won't regret it.
so happy you continued with the dresden files your gonna have an awesome time with the rest of the series also recommend his other series the furies of calderon which is more classic fantasy
The October Daye series by Seanan McGuire is I think the same concept as this series but with fey and a female protagonist. I haven't gotten to Dresden yet, but I've really been enjoying the October Daye books since they were recommended on Writing Excuses (Mary Robinette Kowal is the narrator for the series' audiobooks).
I just read my first Jim Butcher Short story and I loved it! Upon further research it is apart of the Dresden Files and needless to say I will probably read the series soon. The short story I read is called 'It's my birthday, too' and it is in the anthology called 'ManyBloody Returns'
Major DresdenPhile here. A few points: (1) Make sure to pick up the two anthologies of short stories, "Side Jobs" and "Brief Cases", as some aspects of these are referred to in the main books. Interestingly, several of them are written from other characters' viewpoints, which makes a refreshing change of pace. (2) There are also a handful of graphic novel mini-series, which are considered canon, which you may want to check out. (3) The audiobooks, as read by James Marsters (Spike from Buffy the Vampire Slayer), are excellent! (4) Once you're caught up on all the Dresden Files and need your next series to explore, I highly recommend the Rivers Of London series, by Ben Aaronovitch. Clearly inspired by the Dresden Files (including a couple of shout-outs), it follows a rookie cop - excuse me, CONSTABLE - in the London Metropolitan Police, who is recruited into its unit which deals with the supernatural. It has a similar tone of jokes and nerd references, but feels very different as it's from the perspective of law enforcement. For an American like myself, the audiobooks as read by Kobna Holdbrook-Smith were particularly interesting, as they helped me to get the various British accents as one cannot just from reading.
If you want to try out Jim Butchers writing before picking this series up he has a short story in an anthology of Urban Fantasy stories called Naked City that gives you a really good idea of what he's about. Highly recommend

I love that you said “a comfortable read.” That’s what I’m looking for.
yo are u like Daniels dad?
Logan Vail He is lol
Logan Vail exactly like him.
agree!
Your son is a wonderful, intelligent and articulate guy. You should be super proud.
Oh man... Keep reading, there are bigger things afoot and higher stakes than you can see at this point
You gotta listen to these books with the narrator James Marsters. It is an absolute masterpiece. The story lends itself to a great listen.
@@bobbynorth8879 Marsters has now also down a read of Ghost Story, and I believe the previous one has been archived?
@@BariiAlyn Nice, was going to do a relistening of all the books soon. Gonna have to get that one first then :D

Oh no he hasn't.. Especially by the time you get to Cold Days.

I love that his Id self has a goatee and even Harry comments on the typical Evil Magician look 😂
I took a writing class and every day one of us had to write a sentence for everyone else to work off of. I chose that one. Turns out I was the only one in the class who had even heard of the Dresden Files. I was horrified. Everyone else was in a "writing fiction" class to become autobiographers and poets.
"No one sets out to be the bad guy."
I believe Fool Moon is the lowest entry. I really like Blood Rites TBH
Pranvat Gulati
I agree. Codex Alera is a great piece and to think he wrote it when someone challenged him whether he could right something entirely different from Harry’s world and simply base the story on Pokémon and a lost Roman legion.
This! I feel like not enough people talk about that series and it's fantastic!
And his new series "Cinder Spires" is showing promise. Magi-punk air-ship privateers.
I really hated the writing style of Codex Alera. I just couldn't read it.
I am waiting to see Daniel after reading Changes..

@@MrWhangdoodles Yes, this is the one

I love that you did this! This is one of my favorite series. I think the books ramp up in quality, at least from a tension/payoff standpoint, steadily from Dead Beats on through Changes. Keep reading, you will love them! One thing I wanted to add, was that this series does a great job with consequences. The climax of one book can be felt through the next few books and the motivations matter. Its pretty deep for a series that is as overtly "pulpy" as you say. I think its great. And the Audiobooks with James Marsters are awesome. I usually listen to one and immediately want to relisten.
Hoo boy. I can't wait to see how you feel about this series after you catch up. It's one hell of a fun ride.
I just want Peace Talks.
I read most of this series quite a few years back, they were some of the first books I read while getting back into fantasy, and while they most assuredly have their flaws, this series is still on my favorites list. Withe Peace Talks allegedly coming out soon, I'll probably reread this series.
I like the "allegedly" in your comment.
It is most assuredly coming out soon. Last I checked, Jim has finished writing the book.
I also suggest the Iron Druid Chronicles for a light hearted and humorous read. It’s not so much about solving crimes but still consists of surviving the supernatural in a modern world.
i'm on the third book in that series. love it!
Im so excited your finally in the boat! I love the Dresden verse.
Changes- best entry in the series hands down
After that is Skin Games
It gives me heart failure every time I read it. =)
Dead Beat, cause Sue is better.
its a true masterpiece. I still get goosebumps thinking about it
Cold Days
This is, by far, my favorite series by my favorite author. Thank you for recommending this to everyone.
I love that series ❤️ Listened to most of it, because James Marsters is a genius. I am looking forward to the next book coming (hopefully) soon! 😃
not long ago Butcher announced he had finished Peace Talks. So it should be coming out next year, if not sooner.
@@rettthebest I know. I actually checked up on it the day before Daniel posted this video, so I took it as a sign and started the series over last night, so I have them fresh in memory when Peace Talk does come out 👌
@@sarahreffstrupjrgensen7772 I've actually been thinking about doing the same thing, but life is happening right now.
@@rettthebest I know the feeling 🙈
You are just getting started really - all the things you said you like are amplified over and over again going forward. Phenomenal.
Hope you enjoy Proven Guilty... I found it slightly better (to my taste) then Dead Beat, and that one was fantastic
I think proven guilty still has the most running mysteries in it
I absolutely cannot wait until you get to Changes. I laughed.
Joy! :-D
The books just get better and better, so many characters you come to love. Keep going.
Music to my ears! What I always appreciate about your channel is that you're open to changing your mind and explaining your reasons very well, not stubbornly clinging to the first impression. Thanks Daniel ;)
I am half way through the first Dresden Novel, I totally use it to take a break from my other high fantasy books. I will keep reading! Thanks Daniel!
What a great talk up of the series, Dresden gets lots of love, but maybe not the respect the character and the series deserves, I recommend this series to everyone, because the books are consistently a rich and rewarding experience for the reader, looking forward to Peace Talks 😊
I haven't read Dresden Files yet - but I love Codex Alera and The aeronaut's windlass so I need to get to them soon!
I’m starting this series because of you and I have been in a 2 month reading slump but so far the first book has me flying through it! I am loving it!
The way Daniel Greene reviews it, it sounds like this series is the fantasy version of Sherlock Holmes.
Dean Ryan Martin not.... really? But kinda in some ways.
Moriarty is the mastermind!
@@toddjackson3136 Dresden has the heart of Capt. America? Man, what I am waiting for, I must start looking for this series asap. TBR'd!
It starts with him doing professional detective work. While there are still mysteries he is no longer a professional detective. More of a professional bad ass.
*Sees title* Oh, I'm just getting into the series myself and I'm loving it so far; so fun and just a treat!
My Dude, I am so excited for you to read Proven Guilty.
Fight me.
I've never read Malazan, but I think it is better developed then quite a few fantasy series I've read and I really like how it is developed.
I read Malazan. I’m not sure it has a magic system.
Wait, Malazan has a developed magic system? I've struggled through the first book, and then dropped the series. It has its intriguing parts, but overall, feels too disjointed, overly complex, and yet shallow.
Damn, Byzans actually sounds really cool! Nice sponsorship choice Daniel.
5:40 As someone who has read the series a dozen times over..... I have one thing to say..... You have no idea. Oh and youre wrong about Blood Rites, so wrong. He introduces the greatest character of the series period: Mouse.

Thus Dead Beat.
The only book in the Dresden Files that I have listened to the audio book. After it reading it two or three times.
I did not read them in order, I was reading them in the order I found them in at the library so it might have been Dead Beat that I read first.
The first three were written before any had been published.
are the books written in a first person pov?
bmf 456 yes
Well thank you Daniel; Dresden Files has been one of my favorite reads...and now I feel I have to read it again!
Masterfully explained! 💖
The side stories that are written from other characters perspectives does a great job in exposing some of the greater world building and gives the perspective of what Harry looks like to those around him.
Well done. Amazing synopsis of the world of TDF. I think Jim Butcher would dig it.
Book six has the best opening line to any book ever
"The building was on fire, and it wasnt my fault"
Very thorough review. Thanks for recommending this series.
This & Mike's Book Reviews got me to buy the first book.
I want to also add that Mike is also the one who got me into the First Law Series.
I love those books! Thanks for articulating this in a way I can share with the friends I've been raving about the books to for years. 😂
Great series with some terrific world building.
I started the first book 2 years ago today, by the start of March I was on the sixth book.
Big fan of Harry Dresden. I've read them all and eagerly await the next one. In the same vein, I enjoyed Simon Green's Nightside stories as well.
I love Dresden Files. Can't wait for Peace Talks. His other work is excellent too.
I must say, I was quite disappointed with the Cinder Spires. Great idea, poorly executed.
You'll be pleased to know that he announced last night that the final rewrite of Peace Talks is done and publishing info should be coming soon!

If butcher can write a joke I might have to add this to my tbr. Literal vampire stakes got me hooked.
You sir, are getting better at this.
Changes.
Man.

Its a freaking awesome series. I've been following since junior high school ten years. Must have reread the series 4 times. Still awesome
Keep it up!
I just started the first book thanks to your channel! I’m kinda new to fantasy.
One of my favorite book series! Patiently waiting for the Peace Talks :x
i started to read this just becase of this video and i am loving it !! thank you
Oh man!! You're making this and you're only on book 6!!! Dude!! You haven't even hit the best books yet!!! Great job on the video!!
