Michael is my favorite character as well. He actually played a huge role in me becoming a Christian as an adult. I always get teary eyed when I re-read Grave Peril especially when Harry talks about his soul gaze with Michael. How Michael’s soul made Harry weep and how Harry is always afraid what people see in his soul. I felt that so deep. It’s been strange for me reading these books as I grow older. I was 18 when I started the books and now I’m 36, just turned 36 today in fact, and have a family of my own. I used to identify with Harry so much and now I find myself identifying more with Michael. I hope that means I’m walking the path I dreamed of all those years ago. I try to be honest and live my faith, love people, and not pass judgment. I try to be like Michael. I think Jim Butcher must either have a Christian in his life he truly respects or he just created Michael to show what a Christian should be rather than the hypocritical types we mostly see today. I don’t know. I would love the chance to ask him about it. I wonder what he would think about his books playing such a huge role in me finding my faith in Jesus. It must be strange for an author when they have such a profound effect on people’s lives.

Couple of things i'm surprised Lara Wraith wasn't part of your list. Her character has evolved nicely since her first appearance. Marcone: He's the opposite of an antihero....antivillain i guess? my honorable mentions: Forthill: I'm not into faith personnally, but if i was ever to be convinced to join, it'd be by someone like Forthill. Lash: although she's no longer with us, i loved the interaction between her and Dresden over time. She was solid imho.
“I will literally bite your ass off!” Mouse. Michael Carpenter is an American treasure. Though he's only been in two books and really only mostly one I love Goodman Grey. Jim has said that he is going to get his own spin-off series.

I’d have a hard time picking my top 10. Harry would be at the top. As an absurdly tall smartass with a thing for oversized revolvers and jackets, and a slight tendency towards pyromania, I found him extremely relatable on a number of levels. He’s one of my favorite characters in fiction, full stop. After that, things get kind of fuzzy. I think I like Lara as a villain more than Marcone. Especially with recent developments, I thought she and Harry clicked better. I can respect Marcone. He always struck me as a medieval lord living in modern Chicago, and his banter with Harry is gold. But at the end of the day, the crazy vampire lady always seemed more…human. Marcone is a force of nature more than a person. Michael would be an easy pick for the top 3, though exactly where, I can’t say. 10/10, would follow into battle, and then hit up for parenting advice. And there’s Murph, of course. Any woman who keeps spare AT-4s on hand is a woman after my own heart. I know she had a rough start and I get why some folks still don’t like her, but she won me over and I’m still heartbroken. Anything after that depends on what book I’m reading and how I’m feeling. Hell, Toot-Toot is sitting up there after the latest short story.

It's strange for me... Dresden Files appears to be one of the few series where i have no favorite character. It's the journey and the frictions between characters and how all of them seem to fit to the greater story. Sure, I like Toot-Toot and Mab and Thomas and Harry, but i seem to love them equally, to Jim Butcher's credit and it's so rare for me to like everyone in a series this long. This said, well done Mike, i see why your top 10 is a top and love your video!
Great call on Michael. I love that Jim wrote a devoutly religious character who is not hypocritical. Seems rare to see that in fiction (though not rare in real life in my experience).
I think Marcone might be more powerful than Harry now that he has a Denarius and all the power that comes with it. But what makes Marcone more compelling is that where Nicodemus wants to bring about the end of the world, Marcone wants power to protect what he sees as his - his friends, his business, and ultimately Chicago. It will be interesting to see how this gets corrupted over time, as that’s simply what the Denarians do over time: you may start with good intentions, but that simply smooths over your path to Hell.
I wouldn´t dare make my own list. I would feel guilty and ashamed to leave characters behind. But, I can 100% agree on your top 3. Man, Marcone is just badass. And Michael... I am not a religous guy, but Michael is a character that achieved to plant the seed of "well, it does actually seem not that bad. No problem in trying religion, right?". And Harry, well, he's Harry. You love him, I love him, everybody loves him. That´s that.
I love the scene where Michael saves that woman in the train station and she asks him if he is an angel. I also love the scene where he lights the vamp on fire just by touching him. I would have fit Laura on this list somehow, but you have a great list.

I dislike butters being a knight. I strongly dislike it. But consider I have LOVED 15 out of 17 books in the series I really can't complain too much. I'm not saying butcher isn't gonna pull it off. I'm sure he will. But butters was my favorite side character BECAUSE he was under powered. Oh well though.
The Carpenters are some of my favorite characters in anything. Michael was awesome from his very first lines of dialogue, and I came to like Molly even more which I never would have guessed.
Molly is the character that I am always hoping to see more of. Butters and Thomas are very well written, but I never really connected with them. I always liked Karen and she really grounded the story in a realistic framework. There were always minor characters who I appreciated, but your list was good.

The Dresden files, is now on Freebee. Funny, I remember loving the show as a series when it first came out and then I bought the books to read. Now, while the show is good, it doesn't do the books any justice. I would love to see a reboot of the series and do a season per book like we saw with the expanse.
I'd also like to say as a practicing Christian who takes my faith very seriously I'm very grateful that butcher doesn't come out and disrespect my religion out right.

Murphy = Kate Lockley [ Cop on Angel. ] Ebanezer being Harry's grandfather put me in mind of Fitzpatrick McCorrigan [ Trick ] on Lost Girl, & Zedicus Zule Zorander [ wizard ] from the tv adaptation of The Sword Of Truth [ Legend Of The Seeker. ]

As Mike said if you haven't read the series you must do so! When I saw Mike's video on why to read the series I immediately read book one. I really enjoyed it and then proceeded to read a book and a half every day and just loved every second of it.

Marcone is an interesting character. I think he's going to be a lot darker now that Hendricks isn't around to keep him straight. But of course Michael should be your first pick. How else could he not be?
Hey Mike. Thanks for letting me know, I will have to watch this later because I have only listened to the first 3 books in that series. I did want to stop by to let you know, that this past Tuesday, the 25th, I finished reading while listening to Deadhouse Gates by Steven Erikson. It was good, even though there were a few times that I felt like I was just along for the ride, it still was intense. I will probably be starting Memories of Ice next month.

I'll have to put Marcone at the top of my list. I don't find him evil, more very focused. The guilt he feels over that young girl getting caught in the crossfire of one of his early jobs really shapes him. He knows that crime organized and otherwise will continue. So he took it over and made sure it stays limited to willing participants. Mab îs my second. I've loved her ever since she, and Marcone, fucked over Nicodemus. That was a beautiful piece of skullduggery. She is Winter; cold, beautiful, and to be respected. Or else.
Murphy was holding the series back. The high point of the saga was her death... Not because of the gravitas of the moment, but because her character arc was long over. She was a non creative pretentious placeholder for whichever heroine Butcher deems worthy to fill the role going forward.
So many characters it’s hard to nitpick your list. I have Bob higher and I flip flop Michael and Marcone. Maybe we Will get a neo vs agent smith arch soon!

I'll have to put Marcone at the top of my list. I don't find him evil, more very focused.
The guilt he feels over that young girl getting caught in the crossfire of one of his early jobs really shapes him. He knows that crime organized and otherwise will continue. So he took it over and made sure it stays limited to willing participants.
Mab îs my second. I've loved her ever since she, and Marcone, fucked over Nicodemus. That was a beautiful piece of skullduggery. She is Winter; cold, beautiful, and to be respected. Or else.

Hope you read these, have you checked out the series The Tomb of Bill by Rick Gualtieri. Of not, give it a shot, one of my current favorites.
Murphy was holding the series back. The high point of the saga was her death... Not because of the gravitas of the moment, but because her character arc was long over. She was a non creative pretentious placeholder for whichever heroine Butcher deems worthy to fill the role going forward.
So many characters it’s hard to nitpick your list. I have Bob higher and I flip flop Michael and Marcone. Maybe we Will get a neo vs agent smith arch soon!
