      It's not that blue and yellow can't work together, it's that the shades and proportions were all wrong. If this had been a baby blue/midnight combo, with just strips of sunshine or baby yellow (instead of butter-yellow), it would have worked. But there was just too much contrast.
      But IMO, the worst 'crime' was painting brick in the first place. (I see painted brick, I wonder which gang tagged the building underneath the paint.)

    What are these people talking about? You don't look at how a house is decorated or furnished! You look at the location, the space and the bones of the house when deciding whether to buy or not. The furniture? You bring your own furniture and decorate it the way you like. The color scheme? Ever hear of paint? I wouldn't buy a house that is less then 2 feet away from my neighbor, but that's my preference, and from there you start talking price.

    • @grittykitty50
      @grittykitty50 6 років тому +22

      Bullettube, that's what I've been saying. Unless you are looking at a relatively new house, you'd better be looking at the plumbing, checking for evidence of water damage, and the general soundness of the structure. You'd also be advised to observe the neighbors and what's going on that block.
      If someone can't see past the current owner's decorating, they probably need to be living at home with Mommy and Daddy.

    • @purpleviolet72
      @purpleviolet72 6 років тому +10

      agreed, but most buyers have no imagination. I was able to see past the owner's original furnishings. The smell of smoke would be an issue for some, but you'd need to rent an ozone machine to clear that and some fresh paint and that would definitely make it more saleable.

But even though neutral colors are "safe" and all, there are people who are annoyed by those neutral colors to the point where they would look elsewhere if house shopping. I see beige, tan, and putty colored walls and think "yuck". It's ugly to me, but also looks old and uncared for, almost dusty. A house shouldn't look sad, it should feel homey imo.

    Did anyone else notice the hideous and cheap looking (1960's?) wrought iron columns on the front porch? Jean Vignes - Agreed. I live in the house my granddad built 70 years ago. It was the first one built on my street. When my granddad passed in the late 90’s, I moved in. I redecorated the inside and just added shutters on the outside. Painted brick was not popular in this area back then. But over the years, more and more people around me started painting their brick homes, giving them a fresh, updated look, while mine looked drab and dated. I finally painted my brick in 2010, and I absolutely love it! I also put on a new roof with architectural shingles, changed the shutters, and replaced the ironwork on the porch with columns. Made the house look so much better! And the paint still looks as good as it did on day one. Yes, it will eventually need to be repainted, but if it’s done properly (removing any peeling or cracked paint) it will last a long time. Totally worth it.

      When you decorate a home(with furniture) you are selling the possibilities of what the house can be. It’s not so much that people are trying to sell the furniture but rather, creating a vision for how it can look to the seller.
      I bought a cute ranch house last year..The furniture was pretty outdated(and or broken), the colors in rooms were very gaudy- My master bedroom is Lime Green- it made me hesitant. At first I couldn’t vision living here, it had a lot of work and it’s only 14 year old. We put in an offer and have been here for a year( it’s the yard that ultimately sold me), and I’m so glad we took a chance. It’s a silly concept, putting a bunch of furniture in a home/decorating it, but it actually sells a lot more homes than just leaving it empty. 😊

      Some victorians did not have natural dark wood. They had white enamel paint on all trim. Most had a dark green or red or blue for walls. They also had wall paper.
      My aunt and uncle have owned their victorian for forty years. It had when they bought it; natural wood and beautiful Victorian wallpaper in it! They have keep it that way. Even though they have changed out most windows. The big picture window in the front they kept they were told to much risk changing it out because of paint on the outside has leaded paint under the new paint!

This house is one I dreamed of owning as child dreamer. I know live in 14 feet by 50 feet of space with my little boy. The cost to heat a home this big must years cost what I pay in 5 years. If I ever disliked gray I must say after this I hate it! Gray outside, gray inside? What gives? The living room was a beautiful pale yellow and the lighting made it glow! Now it's GRAY. Honestly, every room gray? If you want modern, buy modern, but leave a Victorian alone! Honestly I hate the style she did and mostly the ugly gray everywhere?

    • @glynnL
      @glynnL 9 років тому +18

      She said (around 14:01) it's supposed to be a sage green, but the variances in colour are not coming through on the video. At least the ceiling is yellow and different.
      I liked the outside, but I agree that some people will be intimidated by it. Though I don't understand why.
      But I hate the stuck on dragonflies. I think they are tacky.

    • @yesiownfrodo
      @yesiownfrodo 8 років тому +6

      +openyoureyes I love the gray, and if you accessorize the gray, you can change your color scheme every week! With that yellow, you are stuck. Besides, no one's skin looks good against yellow. And the exterior colors of bright blue and gold were horrible. I'm so glad that is gone. Gray is so hot right now, and frankly, it is the perfect neutral, no matter what your style.

      I am SO OVER the grey trend! Every 'o look at me, I'm doing over my ugly new house to look like a magazine spread' blogger does naught but slather varying shades of grey all over everything. I hate when they do bathrooms on The Fixer-Upper because that Joanna seems to be fixated on grey tiles everywhere - walls, floors, ceilings, showers - ugh. What's wrong with a bit of color these days? Everyone seems to want a cookie-cutter house that looks like everyone else's. I also hate it when people buy a lovely traditional home & start taking down walls to 'make it more open' - if you wanted an open floor plan house, then why didn't you buy one instead of destroying a nice one?

    I find it strange that she thinks the house won’t sell because George hasn’t got the house decorated attractively. If I had been shown that house as a prospective buyer, I’d be imagining how I would decorate/furnish that little dressing room off the bedroom, etc., instead of how crappy his mattress looked sitting on the floor. You love the house for its features, not how the current owner has it furnished. He’s a bachelor, what did they expect??

    I have been in Real Estate for 18 year's, and all these large real estate businesses have been around for many year's, but the Public still dosen't understand how it all work's!! Real Estate is a commodity, it dosen't make it worth more just because you own it! There are many factors that go into determining the VALUE of a property! Location, neighborhood, how old the house is and so on!A house that old more than likely has termite damage, and other problems could be learking in the house. It's best to have a home inspection before you list your house! This won't hold up the escrow.

    Is it usually done like this in the UK? In Germany the houses or flats for rent/ for sale are usually all empty... I really don't care if I like the drapes of the person who lived there before me - I am going to change them anyway and bring my own furniture... what's the point to renovate a house the new people will change again anyway? Also everything would be painted white here so the buyer has a blank canvas to imaine their own things in there etc.
