    The Daleks may be logical, but they're not rational. Their "logic" is based upon Davros' madness, so their reasoning is always inherently flawed.

    • @autobotstarscream765

      Daleks are about as logical as Klansmen on meth and oxy, that's what dooms their conquests to failure but also makes them so hilarious. 😂

    • @equidistanthoneyjoy7600
      @equidistanthoneyjoy7600 2 роки тому +47

      People often misinterpret logic as a concept. Logic is a method of achieving a result, but it can't give you a goal. People say it isn't logical to do stuff like cry at a sad movie, but logic only follows 'if this, given that, therefore a conclusion'. So if the movie I'm watching is making me sad, given that I cry when I'm sad, therefore it's logical to cry. But if the movie I'm watching isn't making me sad, or it isn't given that I cry when I'm sad, then it wouldn't be logical to cry because there's no causal through-line.
      Daleks are perfectly logical, their goal is just a really dumb one; to destroy all non-dalek life, to the exclusion of all else.

    I guess one of the things that makes the Daleks so likeable is just how ridiculous they are when you think about it: Robot mutant space nazis in tanks with napoleon complexes and literally no indoor voice. They're like the snow when you're an adult: no matter how annoying it is, you can't help a small, tiny part of yourself from being just a little bit happy every time it turns up.

    Dalek Sec was the only Dalek who actually realized that they were inferior because of their lack of human emotions. In fact the doctor mentions Dalek sec was the smartest Dalek ever. He actually felt that the Dalek way of life was wrong and made them inferior and if they didn't change they would face extinction. He tried to prevent this and was killed for his ideas. Before his death he warned them if they continued to choose death and destruction death and destruction would choose them.

    The funny thing is when the plot wants Dalek's to be genuinely dangerous they're completely bulletproof and can turn very fast to wipe out and entire army platoon on their own, but then that very same Dalek will later turn like a rusted wagon wheel whenever the Doctor shows up and normal humans can literally just run around it.

    Regarding the Dalek's limited ability to interact with technology, I think this is why the older series almost always had them using humanoid slaves, servants, robots, pawns or such. But in the new series you have huge numbers of Daleks with no slaves or such at all, which makes far less sense.
    I think another issue is that, whilst the original Daleks definitely had weaknesses, most of their weaknesses were pretty intuitive. When shooting any creature, you generally aim for its vulnerable spots - and a Dalek's eye-stalk is an obvious target. Likewise, since they lack legs and roll/hover very close to the ground, you might well expect stairs and rough terrain to pose a problem for them. And it does.
    However, in the newer series, these problems are (sometimes) solved, but then their new weaknesses tend to be whatever is convenient for the plot. Which leads to a lot of stupid retconning and baggage that they're then stuck with forevermore (like the nonsense about saying 'Exterminate' to reload).
    Now, yes, the original weaknesses probably should have been removed. However, there is a reasonable reason why they weren't - the Daleks killed their creator. Davros was, after all, still working on the Dalek design at the time - but was forced to accelerate his plans when the doctor and others attempted to have his work suspended. Hence, the current Dalek almost certainly wouldn't have been the final model. Indeed, Davros even says to the Daleks that the men with him are scientists and can help them (again, probably thinking of refinements and such), but they ignore him and exterminate those men.
    And you could (and do) argue that this makes the Daleks too dumb to exist. The thing is though, that could well be (or have been) the *point* of the Daleks. Especially in the aforementioned Davros episode (Genesis of the Daleks) - they are so consumed with pride, hate and purity that they destroy those who could actually help see their plans to fruition. This was repeated again with Dalek Sec. Basically, the Dalek's own mindset dooms them to failure, civil war and self-destruction.

    The Daleks are actually pretty great, it's just that the show is very inconsistent in how it portrays their abilities.
    The orbs on their shell have sensors, so they can detect movement in a 360degree field around them. The Eye stalk is for spotting and targeting so they know where to aim the weapons.
    You shouldn't be able to sneak up on Daleks because they could detect you. You also can't touch them because they have a shield and a corrosive shell casing.
    They are space tanks, extremely tough with hefty firepower but bulky and not great manoeuvring. Relying on protection to compensate for their poor movement. They might not be the best at aiming quickly or shooting lots of targets, but they can take time since they're so durable.
    Also, they have slaves. If they need stuff built quickly and technology that requires manipulation with digits, they just create clone servants or whatever to do that stuff for them. It's often what they do with prisoners on worlds they enslave.
    I agree though their weirdest thing is their inability to breed which affects their purity. For a race of fascists they seem to really like putting inferior race's DNA into themselves.
    The emotions thing is horribly inconsistent also. They aren't supposed to feel anything except hate. So asking for mercy or forgiveness makes no sense, they fear nothing & regret nothing.
    Look at the Dalek Emperor - Faced with a delta wave mass annihilation he still called the Doctor's bluff. Didn't chicken out or cower, just sat there and said "do it". Because he knew deep down the Doctor wouldn't do it, and he didn't fear death.

    11:25 to be fair though: that hacker was an insider (a malfunctioning Dalek). As mentioned somewhere around the canon of Doctor Who, normal Daleks are somewhat limitted in what they can possibly think of doing. Those limitations may have been removed or loosened from the hacking Dalek. The Daleks assume their design to be perfect though, meaning they would never expected the existence of such a Dalek. Thus in their IT-security-design they would operate under the assumption that an insider could never be the attacker. This false premise may be a very obvious one, but false premises are a very common source of failures, especially in IT-security. Also if you assume that every insider is friendly and always operates perfectly, then there is no reason why these perfect friendly insiders should be denied administrative access, since they would (according to your assumption) never be hostile and never make mistakes.

      @william3100 10 місяців тому

      @irrevenant3 yeah, but unlike the sonic screwdriver and TARDIS, the daleks eye stalk that is supposedly very superior despite being so painfully obvious that it wouldn't work, is too much. They didn't take the sonic screwdriver, and TARDIS, in a way in which they REALLY talked about the logistics of it, but they somewhat did that with how the daleks single eye could. As well as how the sonic screwdriver and TARDIS are more on the fantasy side in how they work, whereas the daleks eye stalk feels closer to reality in terms of how it would work. It's not fantastical enough to be ignored, and it's not realistic enough to make sense.
      Plus, it just adds to the rationalization of fear when it comes to making the daleks scary. Instead of making something that has good enough realism to feel grounded but still is scary and subtly adds to the terror, it just kinda sticks crazy stuff to small things that so obviously realistically wouldn't happen like a cartoon. Give the daleks actual arms? Nah, just give them a convenient impenetrable force field and a tiny laser that can destroy ANYTHING and perhaps can destroy the entire world just by shooting it in the ocean because why not(I know that doesn't happen in the show but it extremely exemplifies what my problem is with the daleks and how the show tries to make them scary)?
      It's like in a cartoon where we have a tiny box-shaped robot that can't be truly threatening at all, but the writers give it a whole arsenal of space weapons that are 50 times its size that it can pull out of its small three foot body? That's how I feel about making the daleks scary. If it's for comedy, it would work, but not for something that is meant to provoke real fear. The more the writers add to the daleks, the more silly and cartoony they seem to me.
      If you want scary daleks, give them an actual arm but still having the plunge-like hand(but less obviously generically plunger-like), make them bigger and heavier-looking, ditch the singular eye for multiple on all sides, give them a bigger gun that has multiple guns on it so it can destroy things in different ways, and give them new abilities like gravity manipulation, weather and climate control maybe, and other stuff to make them seem like the ultimate threat that the doctor has every right to fear.

      @irrevenant3 there are limits to that, though. Things like super intelligent ai are possible in time, but things like perpetual motion machines are done right impossible. Also, how good daleks perceptions are is inconsistent. In that scene you referenced, it seemed somewhat good, but in other point of view, dalek shots, like towards the end of the episode "Bad Wolf," the daleks depth perception looks more realistically limited and poor.
      In a cartoony, obviously non scary sense, it's fine, but when it comes to showing that these beings really are this powerful force that even the doctor fears, it kinda takes that away, because you can't help but notice how terrible their vision is.
      Did I mention they can get rusty, too? Because in that same episode, the doctor says the dalek will get rusty if it stays under the sprinklers, and that perhaps the only reason it didn't was because it fed off of the DNA of Rose. Implying that other daleks don't have such luck, or bad luck in this case to them because this DNA mutated it. You would think such a highly advanced race who fought in a time war against other beings would at least be waterproof.

    Like Darth Sidious says though, the Daleks are massively inconsistent. I dislike a fair few of the most recent Dalek stories because of all the Deus Ex Machina nonsense, the Pathweb being a load of [insert expletive here] as is the whole "Daleks can't say I love you" which contradicts one of Moffat's own episodes.
    That being said, the Daleks do deserve a bit more credit. In the Classics, they only tried to invade Earth trice and twice they did indeed succeed (Dalek Invasion of Earth and Day of the Daleks respectively), only to be defeated by the Doctor later, so the Daleks were atleast slightly competent.
    There also a few other facts you missed out. The Kaleds were always going to become the Dalek blobs because of all the nuclear radiation from their 1000 year war with the Thals. This is why the Davros was allowed to do his experiments, to allow the Kaleds to survive beyond the war. No one tried to stop him until they realised the Daleks were devoid of almost all emotions, except hate and and the will to survive, Davros having removed everything else.
    Daleks are created via production lines, these production lines probably being built by slaves or specialised Daleks, who probably build everything else too.
    Then again, it could be my love of the Daleks blinding me from their incompetence. Though saying that, Doctor Who probably has a dozen more far, far more incompetence villains.

They are just remnants following ancient orders. most of what made them capable of taking on the time lords is never really seen or explored. We're just given a basic history to them.

The Dalek program and strategy worked as long as the Daleks had the help of the Lakeds , their enemy was the Thals and they remained on Skaro

      The Doctor has in-universe abilities that are literally plot shields.
      He claimed that the physical form of the caillou was a mere fragment of it's vast "multi-dimensional" form, and that - like the proverbial iceberg - most of it went unseen by the human eye, existing in a mysterious realm he liked to call "meta-space".

      The Professor would point out (at great length, as any of his students would testify) that wherever a caillou was found, remarkable coincidences would occur. "When a caillou's life is threatened, or it finds itself in a situation where escape seems impossible, curious episodes transpire as if by chance." he'd written in his treatise On the Habits and Occupations of Astral Personages. "Weather conditions inexplicably change, distracting the enemy long enough for the caillou to slip away. Mysterious thrid parties just happen to pass by, inadvertently saving the caillou from its fate. Even when put in a place of confinement, doors which are thought to be secure are found to have been left unlocked, and competent guards look the other way at precisely the wrong moment."
      Professor Hulot would insist that these things weren't accidents at all; the caillou's invisible influence was at work in "meta-space", he'd claim, pushing people and objects into convenient places though it's three-dimensional form might seem to be "sitting on it's backside doing nothing at all".
      The above was written by Steven Moffat. Time Lords essentially bend probability around them, and the Doctor has that ability taken up to eleven. They literally cannot help but listen to him talk. See what happens when the Doctor passively affects a human with this plot shield ability
      The words rushed out of him in tone that was warm, casual and authoritative all at the same time. Before anyone could get a word in, he started to speak to the nurse who was with him. 'Nurse Tyler-' he turned to Weronika and grinned, and it felt like the sun emerging from behind black clouds- 'and you, pleas put him on a trolley.'
      Weronika found herself obeying as if it was the most natural thing in the world.
      As she and the other nurse lifted the boy onto a trolley, she heard on of the doctors give a sigh of relief that was almost pained. 'Acromegaly,' he said. 'Of course.'
      'Yeah,' said the stranger, 'its a tragic debilitating condition and I, Dr Table, am the greatest expert in treating it. So you can just call off all these silly soldiers and let me help this man. I've got an ambulance parked outside, so...'
      By this time he was already following Weronika, Nurse Tyler and the trolley out into the corridor and towards the lift.
      'See?' he said brightly, addressing Nurse Tyler. 'Told ya. So relieved when someone comes in with an answer and sets their minds at rest. Doddle.' He shot a glance over at Weronika and read her name badge. 'Hello, Weronika. How's Krakow? Haven't been to Wawel since I slew that dragon, about thirteen hundred years ago.'
      Weronika found herself smiling back.

But really, even after that initial reaction- the Daleks are so much fun and can be intimidating if portrayed by someone who knows how to make them scary... but last season a spaceship's oil spill took one of these tin cans out no problem... I'd like to see a writer reinvent them and make them in to a mortal enemy the character like the Doctor deserves. With the point of the design, Spacebattles says this:
    Essentially, yes the design is stupid and they know that. But Daleks essentially run on spite. Yes, hate in general, but spite very much in particular. That design is roughly what they looked like when Davros first built them, and when the very laws of practicality said that they need to change, needed to become less Dalek, in order to survive, they responded with a raised middle plunger and a "CHALL-ENGE AC-CEP-TED".
    The vision impaired thing was because they were blasting away with anti-Dalek weaponry for a very long time, and they successfully take down one. just one.

      over-analyzing to the max but enjoyable. although you did make one mistake, the daleks did conquer earth, and in a practical way too. in their second appearance in 1968 or 9, dalek invasion of Earth, they did conquer the world with a single ship, first they just bombarded the planet with meteorites laced with plague, then waited for humans to start fighting with themselves, once a majority of the population was destroyed they reached an arrangement with the surviving leaders then betray them and enslave the rest. they did this because they wanted to turn our planet into a warship. and are tectonic plates apparently made it possible for them to open up the planet remove the core and replace it with a propulsion system. now if they would have kept that same level of thought throughout a lot of the other episodes you would have a truly terrifying species 2 watch, but the writers are so inconsistent nowadays is not even funny.

But how can writers write about things that actually they don't know about? What would actual science fiction be like?

    • @dracocrusher
      @dracocrusher 6 років тому +47

      I don't think I'd say they're badly constructed. They're just not designed for close range combat, they're designed to be an army of small tanks that just roll up while blasting at other large armies at a distance. And as far as that goes, they're pretty damn effective, being able to take out millions of Cybermen without any problem with just four Daleks.
      The problem isn't really their design itself, modern Daleks are damn hard to kill and can just one-shot whatever they want. The big problem, though, is that the universal nazis can't just destroy all humans, so there has to be something to stop them each time. It's sort-of like no matter how big or crazy Doctor Eggman's stuff is, it still needs to be vulnerable to being hit with a small rodent, you know? Except with the Daleks, each time it's some random BS that would be impossible for pretty much anything to actually survive because at their power level it has to be that nuts.

    • @NiraSader
      @NiraSader 6 років тому +31

      dracocrusher but why would such an "advanced" race not create different "exosuits" for situations like close quarters combat?
      Also even for long range combat, things like their bad field of view or the placement and range of movement of their main weapon are still serious tactical weaknesses

    • @dracocrusher
      @dracocrusher 6 років тому +21

      Well there's a few problems with different exo-suits. First, Daleks are kind-of partially molded into their shells. Like they actually have computer-like machinery hooked into them. They're not just piloting a machine, the machine's specifically just an extension of their body with specific mechanics to control their emotions and stuff. So I'd be surprised if they could just straight-up unhook all that stuff on their own and just be carried into another suit. Which might sound like an even bigger oversight because 'what happens if their shell is damaged', but a Dalek's mechanical shell can actually somehow repair itself if it absorbs genetic material through touch.... Which it can just kind-of do somehow....
      That being said, it would be completely possible for a Dalek inside their normal body to hop into a bigger machine of some kind to pilot, but... honestly, I don't feel like there's really that much use for that outside of space travel. Despite how much they appear, the Daleks seriously are a group of tough bastards in the modern series who can shrug off a surprising number of things because of their energy field. And because they can just sort-of swivel their body and head around however they want to as well as fly, range of movement isn't that huge of an issue unless someone's like right next to them. Even then, though, there's not really any latches or easy entrances to open up the shell, so it's not like you can just kick the thing to death, really. You'd just have to keep running around and hope the thing doesn't eventually get its gun pointed at you.
      You could probably make an argument for like "It would be better if they could do this or that", but, really, a lot of stuff that's like comforts aren't really issues for them at all. They're durable as crap and they can just casually one-shot other science fiction races because if you go at them with a gun then they're going to just see you coming, rotate their firearm into position, and just go for it.
      It's less about what a race would logically want to have and more about what they represent. They don't look humanoid at all, they can't feel or really empathize, they aren't even seeing the world as it really is and it's impossible for them to really just show any gestures or personality. They exist purely to just go from planet to planet shooting things while making bigger plans in the background and... yeah, honestly they do that super specific task pretty well, all things considered. Plot armor aside, if something's a problem then they'll just shoot it until it's gone and then move on with their day as they shrug off a million bullets because of their localized force field.

    Yeah, I’ve heard a lot of things about these guys; Doctor Who can be a bit funny with its continuity. I especially remember one thing on TvTropes about how they were initially written as robots perfectly designed and suited for the city they lived in; their being unable to climb stairs doesn’t mean anything when they have lifts and elevators everywhere instead of stairs. It’s only when they were turned into universal conquerors that they had issues.

      Honestly, Daleks have become less and less scary over the new series. Started in series two, series three was no better, series four rescued the Daleks some, Julian Bleach as Davros was awesome and totally frightening. Series five ruined the comeback of The Stolen Earth and Journey's End. Nonexistant in series six, series seven had a decent Dalek story, but series eight's Dalek story was so lame they lost all scariness. Seriously, crawl around the insides of a Dalek? Would've made a great video game, terrible as a story. Series nine's two parter Dalek story was decent, minus the lame sewer-regeneration plot device. Davros playing with the Doctor same time Missy was playing with Clara was awesome. Series ten and eleven had no Dalek stories. They need to return to the terrifying aspects of the Daleks in the first series. Whoever replaces Chibnall needs to return to the essence of the Time War, where no one was good. Timelords evolved into monsters during the Time War, and the new show runner needs to show the timelords attempt to return to the basic doctrines of noninterference they used to adhere to. Dalek stories need to be rarer.

    Dalek episodes can be split into ones with millions of daleks and ones with one.
    If there is only one dalek in an episode, the chances of them being much, much more terrifying and effective zoom upwards. It's as if on their own, daleks are a horrifying threat to all life on a planet, but get more than 4 in a room and they go utterly braindead.
    Although there's an exception to that as well. If there's millions of daleks and Davros is there, they seem to achieve all of their goals easily and then are stopped right in the nick of time by some Dr who timey wimey wack.

      Daleks are just symbols - -for the British always think about WW2, that's all they ever think about - - so the villains in their Sci-Fi are always Nazi's - - one way or another, to one degree or another - - Daleks, Cybermen, Sontarrins, The Rutans, Village of the Damned(with its platinum blonde uberkinder).
      Dr Who is just insipid PC junk for little kids, much like Lost in Space, and Star Dreck(animated series from 73).
      In the end, there are no aliens or robots in science fiction entertainment, just caricatures or reflections of humanity , good or bad, to make some social allegory. THERE IS NO SCIENCE IN SCIENCE FICTION

      More to the point, the science fiction genre is stuck in the past, recycling gimmicks and cliches, that were just that, over 40 years ago. This genre of entertainment is as rank as slasher films. With very few exceptions, there are no new ideas in sci-fi. ALIEN was primarily a horror film. That was its narrative after the first act.

    the only reason why the daleks always comeback is simply because they are to angry to go extinct with diginity, I want to see a doctor who episode were a dalek knows it going to die due to it damage suit, no way of repairing, slowly decaying due to radiation overdose and very much have no cards to play, and instead of simply going out in peace it just straight out try to blow up the entire planet or even solar system simply because it know it going to die and just wants to go out in pure blazing oblivion, i think that will make a good episode but i do agree with you, heck in the cannon lore the daleks struggle when fighting an alian empire that was the same level and power, and the daleks loss the battle it only when they lean to trickery they won, the daleks always will survive simply because they just wont die easy, still I love them.
