Used to watch V-line trains with my twin boys in regional Victoria go by, they used to wake up from naps just after I got home from work (they were around 4-6) around 4pm so I would take them just outside the station for a walk. They absolutely loved it. Only three trains a day where we were. I will never forget them jolting when the train driver in the big diesel locomotive waved at them while waiting for passengers to get on, and then he grabbed on the horn while waving at them. The guy looked like someone out of the movie lighthouse. You could tell he loved his job.
Thanks Max. I have also used the Glen Waverley line all my life. I have almost never been on another line. I'm interested on a trip on the Williamstown line. I'll go next week😁
I rode the (old) Gahn in 1979/80. Three trains from Melbourne to Alice Springs. Have regularly traveled on Puffing Billy until it shut down in March, mostly on the engine. Like your work and you can only get better. Don't be afraid to ask for help.
Thank you for sharing you Anecdotes, I am very excited to do a Puffing Billy video in the future alongside a Ghan trip in the distant future! I may need some assistance in gaining permission for filming at Puffing Billy, thanks for the offer, I really appreciate it :)
I'd really love to see a couple of things. A series on specific classes of Metro and V/Line EMUs, DMUs, and locomotives (both Steam and Diesel), tours and secrets of the PBR, and a tour of Newport Workshops, both the SRV section and the Metro section.

Thanks Max, a fellow Mount Waverley man here! Although I live in Carnegie now, so that's my local. So I'm looking forward to your video on the Rosstown Rail. I also used to work right by Murrumbeena station, so I got to see the level removal works up close, I hope you got to catch some of that!

Have been watchin The Train Man's videos for a while now. For one quite young, he has an amazing presence and clearly does his research well. For the record, Glen Waverley is my home station, but given the parkiing, I always go to Mt Waverley. Might see you Max. Well done.
That was a great video. Could you possibly do a video about how you would design future train stations/lines??- for example- the Rowville line, the suburban rail loop etc. Keep up the awesome work. 😊
I am impressed with your biography and hearing how your channel came in business. If you are thinking about the Hurstbridge line, between Diamond Creek and Hurstbridge, there are some little level crossings that don’t have any boom gates to stop cars from going across; 9 of them in total. Also Diamond Creek has some trains stopping on the right side of the track instead of the left.
Those are some great facts, thank you Masina. I have never travelled that far up the line, so I really appreciate some extra help. I shall use them when I do the video soon!
Hey Train Man, if you want to come down Gippsland way, the best old lines to explore are definitely the Walhalla Line and the line to Orbost including the famous Trestle bridges that still, or did exist on it. Love your work young fella.
Thanks for the great suggestions! When I do visit Gippsland one day, I will make sure to look at the Orbots, Walhalla, Maffra, Mirboo etc. Sounds exciting, can't wait!
Indeed! I am looking forward to one day exploring the whole system and doing many videos in the great city, just like I have started to do in Melbourne! Thanks Tomi :)
Tecoma and Yarraville are pretty interesting choices My favourite line would be Sandringham as it's the most frequently running My favourite stations would be: 1. Southern Cross (Only station in Melbourne I'd consider world class) 2. Carrum (gotta love those sea views.) 3. Flagstaff (Has such a unique 70s aesthetic that I love) 4. Hawkstowe 5. Clayton
Hey Train Man really good video! Cheers for featuring me for shoutout i might actually meet at flinders st one day doing filming on platform 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and so on!
Your love for trains is unreal! Wonder how you find the time, between study/schoolwork, to make the videos! Interesting videos and v pleasant delivery.👍
Awesome video Train Man (Max lol) Firstly, thanks for the shout out. Finally nice to find out more about you. You're a legend. Keep up the amazing work and look forward to the future of the channel and yourself.
Great videos! Please keep the videos coming. There’s a wealth of history and interesting information about the many and varied train lines in Melbourne and across Victoria and you bring it all together. 😎
@@the_train_man Max, you did a video sime time back with the siding near Malvern Station. In the 1970s it was used as a briquette and split firewood yard.
Hi max I enjoy watching your videos and learning the history of trains around Melbourne. I am also passionate for trains and other transport I hope you keep up the good work and stay safe out there
Good video from The Train Man and to hear how his interest started, , I follow Geoff Marshall as well and other YT rail enthusiast channels like quirky Jago Hazzard and Modellbahnwelt tv in Germany, but the YT algorithms have only recently notified me of The Train Man from Melbourne, in 2022 London’s amazing Crossrail/Elizabeth line opens the new deep level central core, Geoff Marshall made some visitor open day YT videos, some fantastic new large stations to experience.
Legend John thank you. Geoff Marshall is the UA-cam Train Jesus haha, and JagoHazzard is so informative. I try to make my videos a bit fun for all to watch, expanding the love for railways beyond the 'quirky train fans'. The UA-cam algorithm does strange things sometimes haha, hope you can join my journey from Melbourne, to Australia and beyond in the future!
I love Flinders street - but there's nothing like the old Parliament station. Did a few jobs there about 10 years ago on the announcement systems There's plenty there that you can't see :)
You should look at the old Heathcote line where it split from Heathcote Junction towards Bendigo via Heathcote!!! You can walk/bike ride majority of the line from Bendigo to Heathcote on the O'Keeffe rail trail!!!! Would love to know the history and what you think of this forgotten line!!!
My cousin used to sell newspapers each morning at the Mount Waverley station about fifty years ago and I recall sitting in the booth with him once as all the grey and black suited men and women passed through the turnstiles and boarded the trains.
What an incredible experience Andrew, thank you for sharing! I have used Mount Waverley station for over 10 years now, so hearing this is very special. I am sure it would have been special for you too, or you may have been bored at the time haha, but looking back now regardless, what a memory! Thanks again Andrew.
You said you were interested in making/planning rail lines? If you had some free time and wanted to you could research and plan a new V/Line line from Southern Cross to Mt Buller following the existing Lilydale line then going via Yarra Glen, Possibly Healvesville, Glenburn, Yea, Yark, Bonnie Doon and Mansfeild. This will replace the coach that currently does the service, it will also bring back parts of the old line to Healesville. The coach does stop at other places along the way but you can decide where the new line will call at. This line may or may not be feasible irl but you could check it out.

Champion! Love your work. In recent years I've been lucky enough to spend a bit of time on the Tokyo system, along with other parts of Japan. And I spent a week in New York exploring their system. Both incredible places to explore some train lines. And both the Tokyo and the New York network maps resemble giant colourful bowls of spaghetti!
The systems in Tokyo and New York are very special, with many spaghetti lines! They are definitely on the 'bucket list' to explore those systems, thanks for the great support :)
Hello Train Man - I have a few suggestions for future videos. 1. It would be great to see a video about the abandoned inner circle loop line. You mentioned there are many relics from the loop line and it would be great to see some vision of them. I think many people who live along and use the old loop line as a bike/walking track would be surprised and interested to see the history behind the track. 2. Maybe a video on the abandoned / discontinued trains stations on the metro system. I can name one - Whitecity station between Tottenham and Sunshine. 3. There are some great old photos of train stations around the Internet so perhaps a photo collage of before and after photos would make a great video. For example before and after photos of Box Hill station would be interesting. Perhaps you could put out a call to your fan base to send you old photos of stations.. I have some great old photo of Sunshine and Box Hill stations. Anyway keep up the great work. Seb
Hey Seb, great suggestions here. 1. I have actually made an inner circle line video on my channel a while ago, not of the greatest quality, but regardless, still there and interesting. 2. Fantastic idea for a video after Lock downs, although I have briefly mentioned some abandoned stations in other videos, I might do a series on closed stations, with 1-2 minute videos on each of them. 3. Another great idea, photos of all stations in Melbourne, I might make that my next video actually, a good thing to do next week, what a suggestion! For a Box Hill before and after, check out my Lilydale Line video! Thanks very much Seb, always great to hear from you!
6 is basically perfect. It isn’t your poor timing, it was because we had a late dinner. We have dinner around 5 to quarter to 6 (I know, crazy early) so 6 is perfect. Hope you’re staying healthy!
Great effort mate, very interesting 7minutes about your passions. Your video descriptions often circle around one aspect of all transport systems is "why are they there"; who pushed to have them built and did that result succeed. Example why is the Lilydale line there, ie it was to source limestone at Lilydale and the mountain timbers from the Healesville region. Another aspect of why are they where they are, is ask about the competition between the trams and the train network in their battle to win over the public to utilise the respective services. Another big question is the existence of the Gippsland line ie beyond Dandenong; this line existed prior to their being a road into Gippsland because of the swamp and thick Tea Tree scrub. The first road to Gippsland started in Lilydale at Old Gippsland Road then it proceeded to Beenac over the mountains to the Old Sale Road near Warragul then to the port of Sale. Prior to the rail the only link to Gippsland was by boat from the Yarra docks to Sale via Lakes Entrance. The rail opened up Gippsland to again to mainly gain the valuable remote timbers for fires and construction. Unwittingly you have started to unravel the very long history of Victorian transport networks, rail is only one of them eh, cheers, keep up the gd work mate, Dean
Thanks Dean, always love your insights. Love the information on the Lilydale Line, one of my upcoming videos, I do mention the abandoned Limestone Mine just before Lilydale which is being converted to a housing estate, but great to hear it had another purpose of timbers from Healesville. Your comments on Gippsland, Sale etc. really show that people are built around railways, I am sure some towns on the Bairnsdale V-Line may not have survived to today without the railways and transport. I can see from reading a lot recently on the VR history, that I may be busy for many years to come with videos, so much to explore and understand! Thanks again!
More info, David Mitchel's family founded the limestone quarry in Lilydale, their daughter was the one and only Dame Nellie Melba, a world famous opera singer of the early 1900's, Dame Nellie's home was Coombe Cottage at Maroondah Highway, Coldstream. Another day or by email ask me about the history of Waimarie Drive and Huntingtower School in the Mount. Cheers mate
Please do the Vline to Dimboola. It hasn't been in service since 1993 but my home town of Murtoa runs along the line and has some pretty cool history I think you will enjoy 😊
A very very good video. You're a "Max" eh? :) So nice to be able to put a name to the person. Keep going with all your vids kiddo! So informative and delightful to watch you doing your story telling.
I’d meet up with you just to binge talk about Geoff Marshal 😂😂 the second best train UA-camr, the best obviously is yourself because Melbourne is amazing! How are you going with Covid19 and train travel?
Haha, I love Geoff's channel! I am definitely going to plan some run vs train videos in the future! I have stopped filming for now, luckily, I have pre filmed some videos, thanks again!
Now that the Airport line is going ahead it would be interesting where it would connect to the existing rail line between Sunshine and Broadmeadow and how it would be incorporated into the future City Rail Loop.
Agreed! The line should go via the Metro Tunnel to the city, although there should be a connection to Southern Cross. It seems that the line will leave the Sunbury Line at Sunshine, and not be connected to Broadmeadows until the Suburban Rail Loop comes around :)
By the way, if you're looking for unusual little lines to explore, check out this MMBW map of Box Hill from 1928. digitised-collections.unimelb.edu.au/imagezoomview/bitstream/handle/11343/54924/UDS2013352-7-0001.jpg?sequence=1 As you zoom in, you'll see not only the old yards and turntable at Box Hill, but a short branch line that used to go to the old Box Hill brickworks. Unfortunately very little remains of even the formation of the line, but it could be interesting to look at anyway. The actual brickworks (abandoned) is still there - apparently it's a heritage site. A bit of history on the brickworks and the line can be found here. bpadula.tripod.com/montalbert/id14.html Not too sure when the brickworks branch was last used as such, possibly 1940s or 50s at a guess. The strange homemade diesel loco 'Cleis' ended up in the Mallee on the Nowingi to Millewa private tramway. Although it was photographed by Geoff Winkler (winkieg flickr) all 'spruced up' in a fresh coat of silver paint in the late 1970s, I don't think it was preserved. www.flickr.com/photos/24609616@N05/5359233481/ All the best - have fun exploring. (y)
Yarraville is an awesome station, I mainly love it due to the lovely station building on Platform 1, and the picket fencing surrounding the level crossing, a really beautiful station. On top of that, there is certainly a treasure trove of secrets, like the filled in subway and 3rd track that used to run through the station :) There is a cool photo you've probably already seen, but it shows the old subway i.pinimg.com/originals/33/16/bc/3316bc42b6405c9e077008fd4dbafb9c.jpg
@@the_train_man ooo I have seen that photo before. Not sure where though. Did not know about the filled in subway, though have often wished for one, or a pedestrian bridge. I agree, it's a beautiful old station building, has a good vibe. Both sides of the tracks you have some good cafes at a stone's throw.

Oh you’re from mt waverley too! Nice
Good on you mate. I bet your folks are proud of you....CJ
Thank you John, I think they are proud!
Keep up the great work... You should check out our trains and history in Queensland sometime... Glad you mentioned Geoff Marshall, his videos rock...
Agreed! Geoff Marshall does rock haha, I am excited to do some videos in Brisbane, Gold Coast, Cairns, the whole of Queensland one day!
Right when I have dinner. But I bet it’s a great Q and A
Don't stress! Sorry for the poor timing! Would you prefer 5?
6 is basically perfect. It isn’t your poor timing, it was because we had a late dinner. We have dinner around 5 to quarter to 6 (I know, crazy early) so 6 is perfect. Hope you’re staying healthy!
I feel like I’m The Train Man Jnr cuz I like the Double Decker Trains in Sydney, I also want to go to London Underground at some point 😍
If you like cycling, the old Ovens Valley line is now the Murray to Mountain rail trail.
Sounds good, I will put a note on it to do one day, thanks Callum!
@@the_train_man your good, follow your passion. cheers
Great suggestion Thomas, thank you! I will put it on the list to visit one day!
Train Man, I’d like to see a video on the Diesel-Hydraulic Multiple Units:
Sprinter and Velocity units.
A very very good video. You're a "Max" eh? :) So nice to be able to put a name to the person. Keep going with all your vids kiddo! So informative and delightful to watch you doing your story telling.
Thanks David, I appreciate the kind words, I hope to continue with these videos for years to come!
I’d meet up with you just to binge talk about Geoff Marshal 😂😂 the second best train UA-camr, the best obviously is yourself because Melbourne is amazing! How are you going with Covid19 and train travel?
Also his classic train vs running videos are a awesome idea!!
Haha, I love Geoff's channel! I am definitely going to plan some run vs train videos in the future! I have stopped filming for now, luckily, I have pre filmed some videos, thanks again!
Good one max
And I like reading as well
Top marks Max 👍 10/10. Hope you get to ride in Seoul & Tokyo one day. Think you would enjoy.
I hope so too! I would love to ride both those systems, alongside Japan's Shinkansen, thanks for the long time support!
@@the_train_man My wife from Seoul and we have great friends in Tokyo. Have you seen those Bolivian buses been converted to run on rail ?
I hadn't heard of them before, but a quick search had me amazed haha! Such a weird vehicle that is, thanks for telling me about them!
Excellent video!
Reminder set!
By the way, if you're looking for unusual little lines to explore, check out this MMBW map of Box Hill from 1928.

As you zoom in, you'll see not only the old yards and turntable at Box Hill, but a short branch line that used to go to the old Box Hill brickworks. Unfortunately very little remains of even the formation of the line, but it could be interesting to look at anyway. The actual brickworks (abandoned) is still there - apparently it's a heritage site. A bit of history on the brickworks and the line can be found here.

Not too sure when the brickworks branch was last used as such, possibly 1940s or 50s at a guess.

All the best - have fun exploring. (y)
I was the last person to man Tecoma Station, way back in 1996/7.
That's awesome John, hopefully you enjoy today's Belgrave video, coming around 5-6pm
You do a brill job mate
Good video mate. I would like to see some level crossing removal video
Sure! Looking to get out to do the Mentone and Cheltenham crossings shortly!
It’s sounds cool
And oh, you forgot to put the Sunbury line on your list for filming in the future!
Don't worry, I won't forget, after Lock downs, The Sunbury Line will get a Train Man visit!
Nice
Awesome work! What do you like about the Yarraville station? It's my local :)
Yarraville is an awesome station, I mainly love it due to the lovely station building on Platform 1, and the picket fencing surrounding the level crossing, a really beautiful station. On top of that, there is certainly a treasure trove of secrets, like the filled in subway and 3rd track that used to run through the station :)
There is a cool photo you've probably already seen, but it shows the old subway

@@the_train_man ooo I have seen that photo before. Not sure where though. Did not know about the filled in subway, though have often wished for one, or a pedestrian bridge. I agree, it's a beautiful old station building, has a good vibe. Both sides of the tracks you have some good cafes at a stone's throw.
I'm really enjoying your videos, could you do one about the Broadmeadows line?
For sure mate, the video is filmed, I just need to find time to edit the thing :)
Hi Train Man, keep up the good work. I enjoy your content. Stay safe.
Thank you Frank, great to hear that you are enjoying, I appreciate it :)
Did Ford Melbourne ever have a catering company which used to supply the big tourist ships in 1959?
London Underground marvelous eh? I think you need to see some real marvelous one....like Tokyo !
Best place to go is the Port Adelaide rail museum in South Australia It's the biggest and largest railway museum in Australia

Can you do an ASMR/Rosstown railway video please? Thanks..

Fantastic suggestion, I have read a little bit about them, and would love to visit them one day, and of course make a video on them! Thank you 😊
@@the_train_man I forgot to mention the Warrnambool port fairy line

HI Really enjoy your programs. Will you be making more programs in 3023 or have u moved on to other things?
Very glad to learn a bit about you. When I was a small kid my father introduced me to the story of the Titanic. This began a life time love affair with the great ocean liners. I have travelled on a few cruises, saw the QM2 enter Sydney harbour for the first time and once visited the docks in New York where the great liners once resided and even stayed overnight on the Queen Mary in Long Beach California. Continue following your passion Max, you never know how far it will take you. Keep up the great work! Regards Peter
Thank you Peter, great to hear your stories of your passion for ocean lines, such a cool passion! Hopefully I can continue with videos for years to come!
can you do the preston level crossing before the tiny person boom gates close
