The Lilydale goods shed houses the Yarra Valley model train club. Years ago was occupied by a chap that restored furniture. The Lilydale VRI is still open for railway pay day and has a running bar and lots of railway memorabilia
I was a Guard at Ringwood for 5 years and spent many a night at the Lilydale VRI. The drinks were cheap and the company was good. I'd bail out late and catch the last up train home to Blackburn and then get up at 4 a.m. to go back to work at Ringwood. It was a different era.

Mitcham - I remember walking over the remnant tracks for old yard. Oh the 70s! Lilydale - I loved the VRI bar that operated in the staton building. Named for a popular Driver who passed away (Paul Hansen) the 'chrome' bar was fun being situated adjacent to the platform. One could access the station from the recreation fields which made it quick for many - not any more.
It’s so bizarre to see the old Lilydale and Mooroolbark station since both are above the road now. The old Lilydale station is still there too, but I don’t think it’s open to the public yet.
Love the video mate. Keep working hard. When you are able to travel post COVID, well worth the trip to Healesville to do a video there. Old turntable still exists, tunnel a little way along the track too. Some of the old volunteers will have some great stories and anecdotes regarding reasons why the route to Healesville didn’t just follow straight alongside Maroondah Highway after Coldstream. From what I remember it’s possible that the Governor/Premier of the day had a daughter with property near Tarrawarra, so the line was built to go through Yering, Yarra Glen, Tarrawarra then to Healesville. Even with 10x (approx) more bridges along the flood plains so the daughter could get the train to the city, instead of the flatter route directly up along the highway. Happy hunting!
Thanks Steve, I love the support on pretty much every video! That is quite a funny though you mentioned, I am sure it will be the same for me in 50 years!
Great video mate. Did you know that the original, 1st Lilydale station building is at Yarra Junction on that Warburton line moved there in 1915 when the current heritage listed Lilydale station building was completed. With some changes to the buildings layout when it was moved to Yarra Junction you can still clearly see the resemblance if you visit the Upper Yarra Museum at Yarra Junction, which is based at the old railway station. Keep up the good work.👍
Great series of videos, well researched. Thanks The level crossing at Mooroolbark is currently being removed and the station replaced. Part of the original station building on the southern side of the tracks will be removed and renovated by students at Box Hill TAFE before being relocated out on the Healesville/Yarra Glen Tourist Railway (at Tarrawarra I think). Before about the mid 1980s there was only 1 platform and a single track at Mooroolbark station; the dual line ended at the x-over you mentioned. Lilydale bound trains used to wait up the hill from the station (behind my parent's house) until the city bound train had passed then they'd cross onto the track to access the platform. There was evidence of a siding and goods area on the northern side of the station before they installed the 2nd track and platform at the station.
How about the station that never was? In 1980's it was proposed to add a station between Mooroolbark and Lilydale. It was going to be built on the embankment, just north of the Mooroolbark and Hull Rd intersection. Where that narrow single lane bridge goes over Mooroolbark Rd ( is it still there?) The station was going to be called Moorooldale. It was intended to take the overflow of cars from the overworked commuter car parks at Mooroolbark and Lilydale. And to provide a closer service to cover the comparatively long distance between Mooroolbark and Lilydale. Double tracking the line was also proposed at the time.
Surrey Hills station: During the 1990s if I recall correctly had a station master that was a keen gardener. So it had lots of flowers. Sure would be great if there were photos... Possibly I might be confused with Mont Albert or Chatham stations, but pretty sure it was Surrey Hills.
Yes. Even back to the 1960s, Surrey Hills would win the Railways prize for the best Garden display nearly every year. As per VR newsletters. Back when the railway cared enough.
The Victorian Railways staff monthly Newsletter magazine as I remember would yearly have photos of the suburban and country station that won the annual prize for the best garden. Mostly the sixties that I remember, but by the seventies it started to have more colour coverage. I vaguely remember Surrey Hills in colour on one cover. My club library may help me track down the VR Newsletters involved.
Enjoyed your presentation on the St Kilda Line. Keep up the good work. Had a number of trips to ST Kilda, including on steam with Y 108 and diesel Y 108.
Thanks again Lance, happy to hear that you enjoyed another video! Riding both Y 108 trains must have been a cool experience, I wish I could have done that!
Box hill was the last station in Melbourne to feature CRT displays. Lilydale used to receive an “E train” until the 1960s which was two swing door motors hauling a set of other carriages. At Lilydale the two swing doors detached and a steam locomotive was attached, which then hauled the train to Warburton. A similar thing happened at Frankston for the stony point service. Lilydale Station is also a copy of the now demolished Korong Vale station, and features a dining room. That small platform you were referring to was a goods platform.
Yup Yup Boxhill station. I had no idea about until I actually went there about 20 years ago had no idea it was actually underground. Thank you my smart man cheers
PS I actually had the good fortune to take the little rail car to Healesville in 1978, when as a 14 year old my mate and I did a walk up Mt St Leonard As your video says, by 1980 they had de-commissioned it.
Since I live in Croydon, it was cool that I've check out that video. After seeing the Double Decker Train at Laburnham Station, I do remember seeing one dude taking this photo as it happened, I was actually on that train this was the last day when Melbourne had it's running Double Decker train back in February 2002. Sydney and Dallas in Texas was only other places in the world I had been on Double Decker trains. At 1:16, where you reviewed the history of East Camberwell Station, where you see a medieval looking Aged Care Nursing Home, I watched it get built back in 1998-1999 from the top floor of the Double Decker train. It used to be the East Camberwell lawn bowls club before the nursing homes were built.
1:46, 3:22 and 5:21, Just imagine how many people could fit through the tiny entrance at East Camberwell, the thin platform 3 at Chatham and the narrow end of the island platform at Mont Albert stations!
Great stuff ! BUT small thing - the outer circle didn’t go straight under East Camberwell and along Sefton Place, it went under a bit to the east, a direct line with Alamein, in front of the substation, that underpass all filled in now. Also, having grown up in broadway almost next to the station, we were all so shocked when they announced they wanted to dem the cute timber station ‘in case it burnt down’ and bulld a boring brick one, which they did - and then yes it burned down ! Meanwhile many other old timber ones still standing.
Thank you for all of the extra information. Many people have mentioned my OCL mistake, at least I was in the right suburb haha. What a shame that they got rid of the timber buildings, the station has lost a lot of it's character, I am sure you would have experienced that :(
I stumbled across your videos purely by chance, and have been watching many of them. Great to see all the feedback you are getting. I'm guessing that between those anecdotes and the wealth of information you can gain from the countless local historical societies, you could potentially expand and update all of your videos with much greater detail (and more historical pictures and video). I hope you have contacted rail authorities to utilise whatever information they can provide also. I might also suggest that you contact the government to assist you financially in putting together a comprehensive historical directory of the entire Melbourne Rail network. You're off to a good start. To that end, you may want to take yourself out of the frame and provide more footage of the unique elements of each station. Keep up the good work! P.S. The new estate between Mooroolbark and Lilydale may be getting its own train station. There have been plans kicking around for decades to put one near the Hull Road / Mooroolbark Road intersection.
Hi Matt. What side of Hull rd would a new station be? Elizabeth Court side or Around the Mooroolbark Pony Club? I do the trip regularly and it's a bit hard to tell from while moving. Just have to wait awhile. Thanks for the post.
Hey Train Man. Just a heads up that the VRI rooms at Lilydale will be open for the last time this Friday Afternoon from 3pm. After Friday they will be closing for renovations but, more than likely, they wont re-open. The collection of memorabilia is set to be packed up and sent to Seymour but who knows if if will see the light of day again.
Excellent videos- really, your commentary, camera work, scripting- I enjoy them all very much, and your passion for the railways! Thank you for your great work!
@@the_train_man Seriously- not just being 'nice'. Its obvious that each so called 'short' video consumes many hours of research and scripting. I am not a train afficianado-but the energy and enthusisam plus the standard is excellent ( you know as I do there is a heap of crap on YT; actually its mainly nonsense). Oh and by the way- Mount Waverley is also my favourite station as my family used to live quite close by to it....so maybe I am an actually a train enthusiast but don't know it yet! Thanks again. Another fantastic video. This one even more so, as it is my home line. A lot of very familiar sights. Remember in the 70s picking Dad up from Heatherdale every night when the Red Rattlers and Harris trains were in service. Now Lilydale is my closest station.
Thanks again Dave, I am quite jealous to hear you experienced the Rattlers and Harris Trains, never ridden on them before, I must find a heritage service soon. Glad to hear I did the line justice and I hope you learnt something :)
That was beautiful, Max. Love the historical pics of the old stations and the old crossings that have been upgraded. There is just something so nostalgic for a train lover about those old boom gate crossings. But so much to enjoy here. You're mapping the history of Melbourne rail. And we are loving it.
There used to be a rail siding @ Blackburn Stn before the upgrade of the station which used to be a cold storage place if I remember called Blue Moon over Blackburn Rd..
Only just came across this video and once again congratulations on your work. The platform and shed at Lilydale are part of the old VR goods network. My mates father was the stationmaster at Lilydale up until his retirement in the late 1960s. You mention the other 2 lines, Warburton and Healesville, I remember them both, especially the Healesville line, as I nearly hit the Healesville to Lilydale rail motor at Station St Coldstream on cold and wet evening in the 1970s
Very interesting because I’ve travelled on train lines for many years on many lines. Your research is absolutely perfect you are brilliant. Please keep up your research no matter your age from PAW
Well done again... I grew up in Mooroolbark and never really knew the history of the station. Caught the train from there so much when I was your age... over 30 years ago I guess that would be! Be great to see the new station and that level crossing gone. Might breed some new life into the area... thanks again
The new station at Mooroolbark looks very exciting and nice, I hope to visit and watch the progress of the station this year and next year! Glad you learnt something from the video, and enjoyed it!
I've been loving your videos mate. You've been doing an amazing job and keep up the awesome work. When I watch your videos I follow your journey along Google maps and I appreciate seeing how the past has shaped Melbourne into what it has become today.
The Lilydale station resembled the old Frankston Station and it had little interlocking gates at the up end and had to be opened and shut to allow pedestrians or trains through. The Frankston Station had the interlocking gates at the down end and were rarely used by the Stony Point or Mornington train. The current terminal track used to run through to the bridge. The little gates had an Annett key attached so the signals could only be used if the key was turned when the gates were in the correct position. The Lillydale station was the only suburban station (except the city stations) to have a Railway Refreshment Room which is now the VRI part. Was operational until the late '70s when the VR suddenly closed it for an unknown reason. They were still running the Healesville rail motor at the time. As far as I know the Refreshment Room is still there. I still remember the sugar bowls with the VR logo. Inside the station is also a very small apartment as the licencee had to live on the premises.
Thanks Daryl for sharing your insights. Fascinating to hear about the gates at Frankston Station with the Annett Key and how different it would have looked/ been used in comparison to today, where the Stony Point Line is used every 1-2 hours. I was aware of the rare VR refreshment room at Lilydale, used for Warburton and Healesville patrons, should've mentioned it in the video! Didn't know about the small apartment at the station though, how funny! Thanks again!
When Laburnum station opened I remember my father telling me that the swing door red trains could no longer travel to and from Ringwood as they were not powerful enough to restart on the gradient when heading to Box Hill from Laburnum. I sometimes caught the 5 pm Lilydale train that would depart Princes Bridge station in the evening and
Run express stopping at Box Hill and Ringwood, then all stations to Lilydale to connect with the Healesville and Warburton trains. It was the quickest service to my destination at Ringwood, 38 minutes if I remember correctly
Wow, what a great story that is Geoff, thank you for sharing. I have always seen the gradient to Box Hill as surprisingly steep, I can imagine the swing door trains struggling up it, especially with Laburnum being in a tricky spot! Thanks again!
Glad you got vision of the line before the Level Crossing removals, it's a beautiful line. There's vision of the line from the drivers cab and I believe of the sidings on the House Train channel.

Very informative video. It's refreshing to see someone so young taking an interest in our rail history. I have a question that wasn't covered in this video because the first station you mentioned was East Camberwell, but you may well have covered it on other videos. The question is, What's the deal with the East Richmond station ? Is it used at all ? I've never been on a train that stops there. If it isn't in use, then why hasn't it been demolished ? I'm 62 and used either the Belgrave or Lilydale lines countless times and I can always remember the station announcers always saying "Not stopping East Richmond"
Thanks for your informative video. I used to wait in the car for the Canterbury Road gates to open in an era where traffic rare. My local station is Surrey Hills which you covered as it is about to go over Union Road. Our local State MP has a contest for a new name as the new station and car park will extend to Mont Albert. My guess is that it'll be called UNION given that Union Road is the major traffic road. [Well done. Keep educating Melbournians (& beyond) on our fascinating rail history.]
That is a VR standard 4 door goods shed. Healesville also has one. The brick power substation, near Beresford Rd, is about where the turntable used to be. And behind the turntable was a single stall loco shed.
Re: Nunawading's walkway under Springvale Rd. Not the only example, although rather rare. Ormond has entrances on both sides of North Rd while Richmond has access to both sides of Punt Rd. Planned for the elevated Hallam Station too. Won't bore you listing the City stations haha. Gutted Springvale missed out on a second exit as I regularly have to transfer to/from the 902 Smartbus and the lights are on a long cycle.
Thanks for the extra info. I should have mentioned/ remembered Ormond, I've been there many times! Richmond does have double entrances, but for this example, I'll count it as a city station haha. Exciting to see the new Hallam station, and I feel for you with your commute at Springvale, what a shame!
The mysterious building/platform at Lilydale is a Goods Shed. Wagons were placed at the platform and unlioaded into the Goods Shed where the goods were picked up by road trucks that backed up to the shed. Many country rail stations all over Victoria still have their Goods Sheds.
Thank you Richard, I assumed that is was an old goods shed, but didn't want to look silly on camera. I have been to the station a few times now, but do not have anywhere near the experience you probably have, so thanks again for the information!
@@the_train_man Don't worry about looking silly. If you haven't seen a goods shed (for example) in use then you can't be expected to know all its facts. Everything you have posted I have watched and Liked, so you must have something going! All the best.
15:33 it is the goods shed built in the early 1900s. it is also heritage listed and will be retained. here's a couple other facts: - the john st bridge used to be a wooden trestle bridge until the late 1800s where it was built in brick. you may also notice there is an extra set of pillars on that bridge, that is because there used to be another rail running alongside the current tracks until it was removed sometime after the warburton line was gone. the original two sets of tracks diverged into one after the john st bridge. - there is a creek running under the maroondah highway crossing, located on the left side melbourne bound where the pedestrian crossing is (now demolished). that creek was underneath a small bridge and the highway was another little bridge over that creek - there was also a track that once reared to the left into the quarry, so that a train could take limestone from the quarry to places within victoria im on the stakeholder group for maroondah highway crossing if you have any questions!!
At 2:21 the Canterbury Rd Level crossing removal in 1968 is touched upon. At the time a senior railways official was always pressuring the Country Roads Board, who were managing the project, to get it underway and finished. His reason was so he could have a less delayed drive along Canterbury Road in his taxpayer supplied car. Never traveled by train himself despite being senior in the railways. Similar situation to Sir Robert Risson , the then head of the MMTB, who always made sure he had a chauffeur for his government car rather than use the Riversdale Rd tram near his home.
Wow, that is very interesting, wonder if it was because they were sick of trains by then, or they just disliked actually riding them! Thank you for sharing such a unique story!
Amazing video! Many trains do terminate and originate at Mooroolbark. The cross over also gets used for some off peak Lilydale services so they can serve Platform 1.👍🏻👍🏻
Thanks again! Funny you mention the originating trains at Mooroolbark, I caught a train into Platform 1 for this video, filmed at the station, and was a little scared to see the next train leaving the platform was in 378 minutes! Luckily I crossed to Platform 2 and was on my way to Lilydale!

The Warburton line is now a rail trail all the way to Warburton catering for cyclists, pedestrians and horses. The Healesville line is being turned into a rail trail, currently ending at Yering but soon to be extended to Yarra Glen. If The Train Man hasn't already done so, I highly recommend he ride from Lilydale to Warburton and perhaps one day we'll see a video here of the secrets of that line.
If you are thinking about the Mernda line, at Reservoir station. If you leave the station, cross over high street and walk along Edwardes street, you will come across a park that has a Steam Train that children can go inside.
At the Box Hill level crossing at 6:02 how many tracks are there? It looks like 4 tracks. Which is kind of interesting if there use to be 4 tracks east of Box Hill. But of course, I guess they may have merged back to 2 after the crossing.
In the 1950's, to the immediate west of that crossing, there was a signal box and a siding or two where coal/briquettes/goods were unloaded and distributed. As a five year old, I had a fascination (still have) and ran from the crossing westwards and up the rails towards the goods unloading area with my mother in hot and panicked pursuit. I still remember well the chastisement when she finally got me back under control.
Loved it. Hope to see more. Lilydale to Mt.Evelyn and beyond. From Ringwood to Belgrave. I read that ,about 100 years ago, they were planning to extend from Mt.Evelyn to Monbulk. Is that correct? Also I heard that they will keep the Lilydale station old building. Thanks for a great series!
Thank you Isabella, glad you enjoyed! I hope to look at Puffing Billy, and the Warburton and Healesville Lines in the future, hope to hear from you then!
There are (were?) plans to build a station at Hull Rd but its never been built. The bridge there is interesting because its so narrow only one lane of cars can pass underneath so the traffic light is in front of the bridge and not at the intersection itself. Maybe they will build the station when the new housing estate is built
Indeed, I had a look at the bridge, and it does seem very out of place. I believe there was very small plans for a new station in the 60s somewhere along the line between Croydon and Lilydale, but other than that not too sure!

Keep up the good work.👍
New trains Melbourne
Great series of videos, well researched. Thanks
The level crossing at Mooroolbark is currently being removed and the station replaced.
Double tracking the line was also proposed at the time.
mont albert and surrey hills is going to be closed into union station also known as union road
I remember the station master in the eighties was an avid gardener, probably not the same these days.
2:51 ... excellent editing! Sooo funny!!!
Film of the stoney point E trains is recorded on the Suburban salute DVD from channel 5. Lots more too.
@@johnd8892 cheers John, I’ll have to check it out.

PS I actually had the good fortune to take the little rail car to Healesville in 1978, when as a 14 year old my mate and I did a walk up Mt St Leonard As your video says, by 1980 they had de-commissioned it.
Just lovin' your work ,young man...that is an old GOODS SHED that you showed at Lilydale.
These videos are never boring, always fascinating.
Thanks heaps Ethan, I appreciate the support :)
Sad that we've lost both Surrey Hills and Mont Albert stations. Loving these videos man you gotta come back make more
1:46, 3:22 and 5:21, Just imagine how many people could fit through the tiny entrance at East Camberwell, the thin platform 3 at Chatham and the narrow end of the island platform at Mont Albert stations!
Thanks for a very informative video.
Stay safe and healthy, looking forward to your next one.
Thanks again Stephen, hopefully I can visit the Northern and Western Lines in just over a month to complete the system, fingers tightly crossed!
First class work and information. So well done.
Love it

Love how you used the Transport Fever reference for the cross over at Canterbury Station! Great video again
Thanks Adam, it is a great representation of what it may have looked like!
@@the_train_man Transport Fever 2 is pretty good too, modular stations etc.

Another great educational and informative video, well done! The 3rd Platform looks like a goods shed.
There used to be a rail siding @ Blackburn Stn before the upgrade of the station
which used to be a cold storage place if I remember called Blue Moon over Blackburn Rd..

Good To See You Mention The Railfan Shop At 5.25 Been In There Many Times Not Since When They Closed Due To Covid Hope To Get In There Soon!😀🚇🚂🚆🛤️
Well done Max. Timing is everything. You got to film at the old Lilydale while the trains were still running.
I was very lucky, I'll look back on this video in 20 years to remember what Lilydale used to look like, great times!
Very interesting because I’ve travelled on train lines for many years on many lines. Your research is absolutely perfect you are brilliant. Please keep up your research no matter your age from PAW

Unintentional haha, I promise :)
Thanks again!
i like the art works on the entry ramps to the Canterbury island platform
I do too, should've mentioned them in the video!
It was the quickest service to my destination at Ringwood,
38 minutes if I remember correctly
Wow, what a great story that is Geoff, thank you for sharing.
I have always seen the gradient to Box Hill as surprisingly steep, I can imagine the swing door trains struggling up it, especially with Laburnum being in a tricky spot! Thanks again!
Interesting Geoff. Even the Harris trains had trouble on a wet day in the 1980s.
Glad you got vision of the line before the Level Crossing removals, it's a beautiful line. There's vision of the line from the drivers cab and I believe of the sidings on the House Train channel.

Man your channel, research and presentation is great. I don't have alot of time to watch stuff as my channel takes up time but I'll always sit back and look at your vids!
It's alright, I found the answer to my question about the East Richmond station on your Belgrave line video. Love the videos BTW
[Well done. Keep educating Melbournians (& beyond) on our fascinating rail history.]
lilydale small platform to me looks like a goods/ parcel shed & platform
That is the consensus I have received from others, used as a goods shed.
@@the_train_man the last time i saw that small platform open two years ago it actually had a model railway inside of it.
That is a VR standard 4 door goods shed. Healesville also has one. The brick power substation, near Beresford Rd, is about where the turntable used to be. And behind the turntable was a single stall loco shed.
An excellent video as usual Train Man !
Keep up the good work !

I see you have a picture of Box Hill Railway Stn... prior to grade separation
I do indeed, my friend Michael found them for me, so cool! I believe they are on the Weston Langford page
1:48. Im not 100 percent sure but I believe that there is a thinner pair at Aircraft on the Werribee line
15:33 it is the goods shed built in the early 1900s. it is also heritage listed and will be retained.
here's a couple other facts:
- the john st bridge used to be a wooden trestle bridge until the late 1800s where it was built in brick. you may also notice there is an extra set of pillars on that bridge, that is because there used to be another rail running alongside the current tracks until it was removed sometime after the warburton line was gone. the original two sets of tracks diverged into one after the john st bridge.
- there is a creek running under the maroondah highway crossing, located on the left side melbourne bound where the pedestrian crossing is (now demolished). that creek was underneath a small bridge and the highway was another little bridge over that creek
- there was also a track that once reared to the left into the quarry, so that a train could take limestone from the quarry to places within victoria
im on the stakeholder group for maroondah highway crossing if you have any questions!!

I still remember well the chastisement when she finally got me back under control.
thanks for another informative video... cheers.
Thank you Rachel, very happy to hear of your enjoyment :)
I understand that there was a bar serving refreshments at Lilydale for those waiting to go onto Healesville or Warberton
Indeed, I believe there was a refreshment room/ bar, one of, if not the only one in Melbourne, not sure where it is now!
@@the_train_man it still exists www.vri.org.au/clubs/lilydale
how cool, bet some of the regulars would be interested in your work, quite the target market
Very interesting, I must visit it one day!
@@barrymcdonald9868 I have been telling people about this place and couldn't prove that it existed Thanks for the link
Love this guy
Just noticed you have Belgrave LIne...will watch that . thanks. :)
Thank you Isabella, glad you enjoyed! I hope to look at Puffing Billy, and the Warburton and Healesville Lines in the future, hope to hear from you then!
So Train Man,will you make another updated version of this video because Surrey Hills and Mont Albert station have been destroyed?
The Lilydale Goods Shed is a model Railway club known as the Yarra Valley Model Railway Club
Really?! That is really cool, didn't know about that, thank you for letting me know!
Interesting info. Good job. 👍
