- In this talk, Antoinette Welch, former ADA in Nashville, TN who won a landmark case under enhanced sex trafficking law, identifies and tackles the issues with the unequal societal perception of prostitution, how those views leave women drowning in the cycle of prostitution, and how the Hannah Project levels the playing field for those who want and need help to get out of the vicious cycle.
The Hannah Project works along with the court system and is a one-day court ordered program for women arrested for prostitution. Its mission is to be the missing link between the judicial system and helping and identifying victims of sex trafficking and those stuck in the cycle of prostitution; It is the first of its kind in the nation.
Antoinette Welch, former ADA in Nashville, TN, is the founder of a program called The Hannah Project. It is a program used to screen for victims of sex trafficking as well as help women stuck in the cycle of prostitution with options of treatment and counseling. The Hannah Project has been in 5 documentaries and one best-selling book written by Pulitzer Prize winner, Nicolas Kristoff on the subject of sex trafficking. Mrs. Welch spent 8 years as an instructor at Nashville's John School. A program aimed at getting 1st time offenders of soliciting prostitutes to understand the full ramifications of their behavior and to prevent further occurrences.

The problem is that the majority of people who use prostitutes really do not care what life they live or have lived. It's a sad, true reflection on society that there is a high percentage of people who will use others for self gratification. What needs to change is for jobs to be more profitable than selling yourself. Don't leave abused women to choose between a low paid job or a job they can't manage because of their history/low self esteem.
Wow, that was real, and HIT HOME: THANK YOU!!!...This is so important. Everyone HAS VALUE! ...my 27-yr-old sister, Hanna just died from heroin being shot into her back where she had an open wound from a flesh-eating bacteria, and this was a bit of a shock to suddenly hear "HANNAH" project. I only wish she could have had some help. I just learned that she went to jail 18 times, and once she asked a guard in an L.A. jail to help her, because she was being beat up in the cell, and the guard said, "You are going to have a long night." He refused to assist or protect her when she asked. She was 5'3", blonde, blue-eyed, and the most sensitive, loving human being, and she spent ten years living in this Hell, and selling her tiny body for heroin. It is such a tragedy. We were adopted by monsters, Hollywood monsters, and I can not fathom what she suffered through. We always had fun together and were very close before she went down the path of drugs. Our mother would not let us be alone together, because she knew Hanna would have someone to tell the truth to, and that would heal Hanna and convict our adoptive mother and father for their evil deeds. I reached out to Hanna regularly, and she could only -- sometimes -- successfully type back on Facebook messenger: "Love." She died Oct. 22, 2016, 12:22am, Sherman Oaks, CA. June 24, 2017 she would have been 28. RIP Sis!

Are you sure, I've never heard anyone use like that... if you don't find a vein it's usually painful and you won't get a lot from it. Not as bad as hitting an artery, but that's accidental. I can't see someone trying to use that way, would probably get more from smoking it, and less painful.

She knows whats she's talking about compared to many others that talk about the same thing.
This cop is as clueless today as she was when she started. She's self-righteous and ignorant.
Police create the black markets that these traumas happen in by enforcing criminalization. Her work is one half the cause of the suffering she sees.
That's because they cause the trauma! Rape the second most reported complaint about law enforcement nationally, and even though sex workers are not the ones who file these complaints, we are probably experiencing a higher incidence of abuse because it seems to be a common occurance.

I've seen a lot of comments here talking about whether or not to legalize prostitution. While that is an important discussion, it is not what the speaker chose to present about, and some have argued that the speaker's claims should be totally discredited because the topic is absent. I believe these people are missing the point -- the important thing is that she has taken the initiative to tend to people who were endangered in the field of prostitution. Sure, have your opinions on legalization, but recognize that the work she is doing is bettering and saving the lives of people who otherwise have nowhere to turn.

I broke down into tears when I felt the women's value individually. I wanted to make sure no one would ever find the pimps, traffickers, & tricks, comfort all of them when they mourn as a cosmic father, healing their emotional wounds through encouraging, uplifting, & inspiring these women.

I think many of these speakers work for years with unacceptable realities. It’s a long and sometimes difficult labour of the heart, mind, body & spirit to gain an ability to deeply accept the unacceptable & speak calmly, care deeply, and make the extraordinary difference they do to better our world. It’s so beautiful
I love TEDx Talks, they allow people to share true painful stories, and thats a really big step to rise awareness and ultimately healthy changes.
To share resources like the Hannah proyect, so people can reach out for help, and also that more often than not, we are not alone with our problems, somewhere, someone is experiencing the same problems, and someothers with better chances, are working to help them.

If I found out that one of my friends had a conviction for prostitution I'd lose faith in the system. That's not something a person should be criminalised for. And criminalising it just adds to the social stigma of it.
The Hanna project sounds like a good idea though.
There's a good TEDx talk, comparing the .. legalization of prostitution. Per the presenter - the favored model is decriminalization, which is only in New Zealand.
Good parenting can only happen when you have a society that has support systems that foster healthy citizens , with affordable housing, living wage, universal health care....justice, addressing sexism, racism, prejudice and so on....it take a village to raise a child.....in other words a society

Some people say that prostitution should be legalized, but then there would be the problem of human trafficking. If you legalize prostitution, you legalize human trafficking. And that, is no bueno. Instead, they should stop arresting the prostitutes/victims and focus on arresting pimps and johns.

I would not see such a woman as someone lesser either, if anything as an empath I would reach out to such a person to relive them of some of their pain and remind her that she is not alone in suffering. I’ve spent most of my life battling my own demons from years of abuse and social rejection as a child and the collapse of my physical health combined with Complex PTSD, all as a result of that abuse - the last thing I’m going to do is judge another for their own demons. I’m grateful addiction was never among my demons, but disability, my myriad chronic illnesses and my mental health issues and severe chronic pain certainly would have placed me at very high risk for addiction had I been born with an addictive personality...and that is a roll of the genetic dice that none of us has any control over.

Go to school, learn a skill set and take up a new line.

If you're being forced you will have to be sneaky and hide some money for your run, but there's always a way to change your life if you really want to.

Every job I have applied to outside of California in the last 20 years has asked if I was ever in a diversion program (many said "diversion program or similar alternative to prosecution" or something similar). Every one said applicants who lied about being in diversion could be fired immediately. The idea that diversion programs like The Hannah Project get around the problems of conviction is a farce.
this is why this lifestyle shouldn’t be supported or shown as a good example, most people get into because of very bad reasons that people don’t want to fix. If a woman is selling herself for money its not because she truly wants to but because there is definitely a point in her life where things took a dark turn. We should be encouraging people away from that harsh lifestyle and to improve themselves by not selling themselves. We should be helping these women and not promoting in industry that summarily denounces them and objectifies them as objects to be bought and sold. That is not humanity, that is the opposite.

I am glad that this talk exists in that this is defiantly a subject that needs more conversations. Indeed continuing to punish women that are already being punished by life will only make them fearful of institutions that should be helping them. However, I do not think that a one day program is doing enough, although being given the offer to clear charges in a big step. Many women are afraid or may have no other skills to support their families. Besides that if we focused on the larger issue some of this would be cleared up. Our poor and homeless are trapped. They cannot afford training to build skills but minium wage jobs often do not pay enough to live and added to that it can be difficult to even get a skill less job.

Antoinette Welch, the speaker, is recounting her experience of prostitution in the black market- where you see a lot of desperation, drug use, violence, rape, human trafficking. People who are pro prostitution want it moved into the white market, want it decriminalized. In this way workers and clients both can seek protections that eliminate abuses. If you look at a country with legal prostitution it does not remotely look like human trafficking. It is a means to Protect the suffering that you point it, by legalizing it.

If 80% of comments are from happy sex workers, how do you know that "the vast majority will horribly suffer" If you stigmatize and criminalize prostitution as a whole, it is MUCH HARDER to help the people who are forced in this profession. If you decriminalize, the people who want to do this profession can do it, and it will become much more obvious where the problems lie, because sex workers can report problems to the police. I am a sex worker in a country where sex work is legal, and I DON'T speak for all prostitutes, but i know ENOUGH woman who want to do this. If we just accept that women have a sexuality and can choose to do this job out of their own free will, We can work together to eradicate the trafficking and forced prostitution problems.

Wow! Thank you thank you thank you for making a difference in these woman s life's. You didn't have to do this especially coming from a good solid background and not initially understanding the street live so many of us lived or were groomed into. You could have judged us broken women and made jokes or regarded us as trashed whores instead you made a change to protect us/them. I believe ,that she believes this is a good perspective, My authentic self knows this is over the top biased one view. As usual law enforcement works like the doctor who does not listen to his / her patients. As it was said before watch Toni Mac's TED Talks , I understand as Substance abuse counselor to be effective , I work with Sex workers pretty regular basis. The commonalities between sex sales laws and drug laws are undeniable. It is the system that elevates the the harm , risk and social stigma. Education , Treatment and harm reduction open more doors than shutting them for those who desire change and enhance the spark to potential desire, with a no strings opportunity. Instead of control and laws that have become the money racket we all know that they are.

decriminalization =/= legalization. With decriminalization everyone STILL gets busted, they just don't get jail time, they pay big fines. With legalization NOBODY gets busted, and the activity goes on undeterred. So logically with decriminalization all the "back alley" and "hiding" aspects of the industry will still persist, thus all the ills that go along with that system will still exist. You'd LOGICALLY expect: ZERO CHANGE. Getting worse is just a product of "more population will yield higher number totals".
So in your country she has to choose from being at the mercy of a pimp vs being at a mercy of you and judges. Nice choice .. I have a feeling prostitution is much more grey in other countries where they actually have a justice system and prostitution not much criminalized. USA may have a good Constitution but the justice system is a joke and you can see that in prison population.

When coersion in various forms, the removal of choice (to say no or how it goes), the lack of support for the healthcare dimensions (cosmetic repairs, ressucitation burials, childbirth, stab wounds), and the lack of autonomy of those involved to make choices about their living arrangements, bank accounts, attire, diet, free time, etc. - all get turned around - only then can the legitimacy conversation even begin.
As an experiment, let the coersion let up for even one day - how many would still keep doing it? Maybe a few. What percent? 50%? 25%? 20%? 10%? 5%? What percent would even put up with this if they could be choosy and keep the money? Is that even the same thing?
There is a demand motivating the placement of people in a category. How can anyone that even catches a glimpse of this believe people want to be doing this? People know they have to be aggressive to make people do this because obviously they won't otherwise.

If you want to understand some of what she is talking about, I recommend reading Redeeming Love by Francine Rivers. It's a Christian book but it portrays the horrible reality of human trafficking so well
Excellent talk. Thank you for saying everything you did so well. I don't first hand have experience of this world but I've known one woman who did, she was a heroin addict, and I feel so much for all those others who live their lives in such a miserable and dangerous way.

As a sex worker I know from my own experience laws against sex work make it impossible for the safety of sex workers to report abuse & slavery! it is hurtful & extremely harmful to tell a migrant sex worker they can NOT contribute to the economy as a sex worker & therefore are subjected to abusive, slavery & criminal element, as a sex worker working in a illegal & can NOT obtain a work visa as a sex worker does NOT have the same human rights as any other worker & makes it IMPOSSIBLE for that sex workre to report violence against them & criminal know this!
so yes! by prohibiting migrant sex workers from sex work you are in fact creating a problem & the opportunity for criminals to prey on sex workers who have been made vulnerable by a system that does not include us as any other workers with workers rights & human rights!
sex work need to be FULLY DECRIMINALIZE if you are serious in addressing the real problems that come with the prohibition of adult sex work!

multuminparvo5 The only children being sold for sex are typically by their parents! There is as high as 3% of prostitution that is forced. And police should concentrate on them instead of criminalizing consensual adult activities.

In Ontario Canada prostitution is NOT illegal but solicitation is so its great to know if anything ever did happen, I can call the police without worrying. It also discourages any abuse from the men they aren't protected legally like the escorts are. Yay 🇨🇦 Canada 🍁

If prostitution was decriminalized they'd be able to go to the police bc their 'pimp' beats them or a client attacked them. There WOULD be so much more happy women who love their job. The women who dont want to be there can leave, and because of that there would be less pimps and less attackers because theyd be getting caught. You can never get rid of the problems, but its the same with so many other things.

Thing about backpage is that there are many other pages that are the same thing and the law is not shutting those pages down. Backpage was only shut down because of media attention.
