I eventually gave up doing anything for the tree. Now this year it is covered with blossoms. Go figure. I just leave the tree alone and it bears fruit.
That’s true! It happens the same as with people, if you give them to much attention they ignore you but if you ignore them they show up to get your attention! 🤣😂🤣😂
10 years sounds like you grew the tree from seed. That is about the same amount of time it takes to bear its first fruit since it’s probably not grafted

I think he is also very accurate here (overall) with great information. Chris at Truly Tropical uses the same sulfur. I do things a little differently. For one, our soils are generally vastly different than those in FLA. So I add far LESS of the minerals he calls for. But I do apply very low amts, along with the fish emulsion & seaweed/kelp. I think he or Jake used to call for handfuls of azomite--No ! Not necessary. Trace amounts at most, maybe. That is actually detrimental, long term. I apply a "slow-release" (dispersul from Treeland Nursery, etc.) more frequently than he does. But at slightly lesser individual amounts. Our soils have TREMENDOUS buffering capacities ! We have a lot of inherent minerals here already. So bringing down--as he very aptly states---the pH and keeping is somewhat low for periods I think is a huge component of success here. YO! This wrks! I had been putting on acid lover fertile junk for the past 2 years, but never having my soil tested, and being concern of over doing it, I've always did it with caution... Well, after seeing this video a few weeks when you posted it, I went ahead and spent the money on a little PH gauge, and tested the soils in my pots and they were all just at 7 (give or take...) So i bought the sulphur mix (one specifically with gypsum in it) and in just 2 weeks!!! The Ph is down to 6, and all my plants (especially mangos) are showing HUGE signs of life and I hate to sound 'Puffy", but honestly, It's literally like they are renewed and have new life to them VERY COOL! Thanks Shamus! Your vids are a gold mine!
All true facts..helpful information...here in Florida a lot of us deal with sugar sand and high ph as well..all you said needs to be done to keep Mango Trees happy and looking nice..

In tropical areas, because much raining, tons of grows and decompositions, tends to make the soil a bit acidic, but in dry Arizona, your method is good and makes sense

I am amazed at the completely hostile conditions regarding your high soil pH of 8.5 and salinity 1100 ppm. I am growing a KP mango tree in Aussie, although the soil and water are OK as far as pH and salinity go. The climate is not really ideal where I live, but the tree usually produces good mangoes annually. I should be checking the trace elements requirements, as I have sort of neglected the tree, thanks for the information, I'll check the internet just in case.
Yep, you got it. We live in fla and we use fish emulsion but our soil is good. We don’t feed heavily nitrogen more on the PK side and we get loads of mangos 🥭. We do use sulfur maybe once a year when we observe it may need it. We have don’t it in years. We are hobbiest but have had good success, and the growers say exactly what you’ve said in this video. We live in Tampa Bay Area close to water.

Apparently coffee grounds can be used to lower the pH level in the soil as well, someone was feeding his avocado 🥑 tree that in the Nevada desert on here,the trouble he had though is burned leaves from their hot summers despite having a tent built out of hessian sacks covering it. I seem to find that mango 🥭 trees & pineapple 🍍 plants love it on a mid 40°C (110-115°F) day compared to an avocado 🥑 tree or a papaya plant. We're lucky to have a pH of 6.5 in our soil on the east coast of Australia !

How frequently should I add the slow release fertilizer. Also when measuring how much of the Iron Chelate to use, should I use the size of the pot I bought the tree from or the size I just put it into?
Well, it's been another year, my Glenn Mango still in container doing well, but like you explain, they don't last long in our soil and salt in our water, so I'll probably just transfer him into a larger container rather than put him in our soil. Tucson soil is literally like CEMENT. We're having 25F degrees this week so I've brought him inside the house until it gets in the upper 40s-50s. Glenn Mango can take colder weather than other mangos but will have some difficulty if outdoors in a series of days of temps in the 20s!!!
Try Florigon mango seedlings. I'm 2 blocks from the ocean in San Diego, and the two seedlings I have of Florigon grow and perform great, vigorous, basically no salt burn,… and great fruit as well. No disease problems. Whereas, Turpentine seedlings of the type I have, which grows well, though dwarfish, as a sprawly bushy, get salt burn rather substantially,… although very productive and with good, very tasty, sweet, flavorful, orange fleshed fruit.
Just planted a 3 gal coconut cream mango this evening, and gave it a drink of fish emulsion & liquid seed weed. Curious what are you using for foliar feeding. I been using fish emulsion & liquid seed weed as my foliar feeding in a more diluted form on my other tropic fruit plants I am in a sub tropic zone, need to get a PH gauge to check my soil. In my case my PH could be the opposite of yours, more on the acidic side.
I've been using tiger 90 sulfer from Arbico Organics since they have good prices. It converts to sulfuric acid and changes the caliche to gypsum form of calcium. I use chelated iron as well, but the EDTA type is not effective for high pH. I have that type leftover from blueberry growing so foliar feed since the pH is too high here but ended up buying the EDDHA type for high pH. It takes a long time to acidify soil. Also, I don't apply EDTA iron and manganese in the same window since manganese outcompetes it.

Please post a video on winter care of the mangoes in SoCal. Winter is the rainy season here..so there are two bad elements for mango in winter. The cold and wet weather. I do not have a green house.
Probably a late comment... mycelium actually carries the nutrients not the plant roots. The mycelium network needs the acidity to take up the nutrients and deliver to the roots. Reference: Peter McCoy, Radical Fungi. Cheers, Johno

"Throwing compost on them is not enough..." yet that's all the Phoenix Mango Lady does to her mango trees and they are 30 ft tall. I think the key here is seedling vs grafted trees. One could buy a high maintenance grafted tree and all the products to throw on it or one could get a polyembryonic variety (like the NDM in the video) or manilla or ataulfo and not have to treat your tree like a princess. Even if you wind up not having good fruit at least you have a vigorous tree with strong root system to top work grafts onto later.
too many variables involved. trees are like people; each tree is a little different (they respond a little differently) also, age, prsent health, soil type, climate, food etc play a role..
You are only taking into consideration a sample size of one. Yes her trees are beautiful and they are essentially clones of the original but no one else has had any example of growing seedlings. I tried to grow 3 seedlings from Manila mangoes and they only grew for a year and 2 out of the 3 have died. The last one is barely limping along. So there lies the problem and I think Shamus as well as others around the valley has tried to grow from seedlings but has not had success. I know they have tried or are trying in California now. In the case of treating the tree like a "princess", you are taking a tree that is not of this environment, how do you expect it to adapt? Trees develop in certain areas due to generations upon generations of adaptations not years. I have tried Japanese maples here and they have not made it either because of it being too hot. Even in Florida, the only successful Rambutan tree I have seen has been in a climate control green house. When you are fighting an environment, you have to take special measures to do so, not all trees, just because they sprouted as seedlings are going to be able to adapt to any environment. If this environment was meant for mangoes, we would have had naturally occurring groves of mangoes years ago.
@@garrycole9187 I admit I haven't conducted a scientific study on grafted vs seedling nor would I want to lol but I do know of way more trees than "a sample size of one" in the PHX area both grafted and seedlings. All I'm saying is seedling is more vigorous and better able to tolerate PHX climate. I think even shamus would admit to that. The same is true for the avocado in PHX but with the avocado you are really rolling the dice on getting good fruit. At least with the mango you can get a poly seed and increase your chances of getting good fruit by a little bit. Are you growing in PHX or Florida?

My guess is the constant rains and humidity levels throughout the year. I live in Florida so you literally cant kill a mango tree here unless you really really try hard enough lol.

Dr. Richard Cambell says never to use nitrogen and in fact tries to get nitrogen out of the soil. Is there a difference in nitrogen requirements between a young tree vs a mature tree?
Nitrogen produces green growth, p & k produces flowering according to Dr. Richard Cambell. So if its a young tree you will want to stimulate new growth, when it becomes mature, thats when you take the nitrogen out of the mix. At least thats my take Dr. Richard Cambell video
I live in Hermosa Beach California, my neighbor moved and “left” me his container mango tree (meaning he was getting ready to throw it away) and I’m not having much luck in nursing it back to health. Im beginning to think that he was ill prepared to grow a healthy mango tree in a container and I probably need to repot it, ensuring it has all the nutrients and whatnot. Any suggestions? My back porch is situated in such a way that my container garden gets direct sunlight at 7 am until about an hr before sunset. Is that a good place for it?
That is too much sun for most mango varieties. It should get some afternoon shade especially when it is hot. Protect the stems and branches from the sun if the tree doesn't have a dense canopy to shade them. Mango's and Avocados do not like sun on the bark.
The Earth îs not flat, but they were never on the Moon. I have 2 mango trees from seed, they look fine now. Will it work If I put a spoon of (apple) vinagre in water, everytime i water them? They will grow in pots, and in winter inside, at a sunny window. I live in Europe, no normal place for exotic fruits.
Fish emulsion stinks to high heaven-- it will draw the flys needed to fertilize Mango flowers-ha. Never heard of sulphur as a main ingredient. I might try that. Here in the bay area,I have a good rich clay..but Mangoes being tropical need help in cool soil temps drawing up micronutrients.
They are so sensitive in pots that when I tried putting a saucer under my tree in summer..it only took 2 days for the leaves to blotch. They hated the slight standing water that other plants simply wick up in our dry summers. I tried later again..and same result. So,never put a saucer under your potted Mango is my 2 cents. oh,That tree in the ground now is fine.

What are the salinity values in the water again? Looking at the report for our water I am assuming it would be found in Sodium column?

"Throwing compost on them is not enough..." yet that's all the Phoenix Mango Lady does to her mango trees and they are 30 ft tall. I think the key here is seedling vs grafted trees. One could buy a high maintenance grafted tree and all the products to throw on it or one could get a polyembryonic variety (like the NDM in the video) or manilla or ataulfo and not have to treat your tree like a princess. Even if you wind up not having good fruit at least you have a vigorous tree with strong root system to top work grafts onto later.
too many variables involved. trees are like people; each tree is a little different (they respond a little differently) also, age, prsent health, soil type, climate, food etc play a role..

You are only taking into consideration a sample size of one. Yes her trees are beautiful and they are essentially clones of the original but no one else has had any example of growing seedlings. I tried to grow 3 seedlings from Manila mangoes and they only grew for a year and 2 out of the 3 have died. The last one is barely limping along. So there lies the problem and I think Shamus as well as others around the valley has tried to grow from seedlings but has not had success. I know they have tried or are trying in California now. In the case of treating the tree like a "princess", you are taking a tree that is not of this environment, how do you expect it to adapt? Trees develop in certain areas due to generations upon generations of adaptations not years. I have tried Japanese maples here and they have not made it either because of it being too hot. Even in Florida, the only successful Rambutan tree I have seen has been in a climate control green house. When you are fighting an environment, you have to take special measures to do so, not all trees, just because they sprouted as seedlings are going to be able to adapt to any environment. If this environment was meant for mangoes, we would have had naturally occurring groves of mangoes years ago.
@@garrycole9187 I admit I haven't conducted a scientific study on grafted vs seedling nor would I want to lol but I do know of way more trees than "a sample size of one" in the PHX area both grafted and seedlings. All I'm saying is seedling is more vigorous and better able to tolerate PHX climate. I think even shamus would admit to that. The same is true for the avocado in PHX but with the avocado you are really rolling the dice on getting good fruit. At least with the mango you can get a poly seed and increase your chances of getting good fruit by a little bit. Are you growing in PHX or Florida?

I’m not a gardener and new to all planting world but already have bought mango trees to try and grow in my yard. I live in a subtropical climate in the USA.

The weird thing about the salt issue is the old groves in Florida looking great despite being at sea level in a coastal environment. Wonder how they can do it.
My guess is the constant rains and humidity levels throughout the year. I live in Florida so you literally cant kill a mango tree here unless you really really try hard enough lol.

Dr. Richard Cambell says never to use nitrogen and in fact tries to get nitrogen out of the soil. Is there a difference in nitrogen requirements between a young tree vs a mature tree?
Nitrogen produces green growth, p & k produces flowering according to Dr. Richard Cambell. So if its a young tree you will want to stimulate new growth, when it becomes mature, thats when you take the nitrogen out of the mix. At least thats my take Dr. Richard Cambell video

I live in Hermosa Beach California, my neighbor moved and “left” me his container mango tree (meaning he was getting ready to throw it away) and I’m not having much luck in nursing it back to health. Im beginning to think that he was ill prepared to grow a healthy mango tree in a container and I probably need to repot it, ensuring it has all the nutrients and whatnot. Any suggestions? My back porch is situated in such a way that my container garden gets direct sunlight at 7 am until about an hr before sunset. Is that a good place for it?

That is too much sun for most mango varieties. It should get some afternoon shade especially when it is hot. Protect the stems and branches from the sun if the tree doesn't have a dense canopy to shade them. Mango's and Avocados do not like sun on the bark.

The Earth îs not flat, but they were never on the Moon. I have 2 mango trees from seed, they look fine now. Will it work If I put a spoon of (apple) vinagre in water, everytime i water them? They will grow in pots, and in winter inside, at a sunny window. I live in Europe, no normal place for exotic fruits.

Fish emulsion stinks to high heaven-- it will draw the flys needed to fertilize Mango flowers-ha. Never heard of sulphur as a main ingredient. I might try that. Here in the bay area,I have a good rich clay..but Mangoes being tropical need help in cool soil temps drawing up micronutrients.

I am indian ,just only know some thing about mango tree,but you are well studies. It needs ash, bone meal etc.
They are so sensitive in pots that when I tried putting a saucer under my tree in summer..it only took 2 days for the leaves to blotch. They hated the slight standing water that other plants simply wick up in our dry summers. I tried later again..and same result. So,never put a saucer under your potted Mango is my 2 cents. oh,That tree in the ground now is fine.
