    Not saying I’m a professional gardener but I have had great success here in Georgia (USA) growing mangoes and other fruit trees. I have small trees in large pots and they grow great and will eventually grow into the pot in time. As for soil, it’s simple,I use peat moss, soil conditioner, manure, compost and top soil. You can’t go wrong with these basic ingredients and it’s cheaper than those fancy fertilizers and other products that are sold by these UA-camrs.
    I sprinkle very small amounts of 10-10-10 on top of the soil making sure it is close to the edge of the container then I apply leaves for on top of the soil mixture and tree for water retention. The leaves will break down and become compost.
    The tree will become a dwarf and stay a certain size depending on the size of the container. Also throw in some worms on top of the leaves and they will burrow into the container and thrive creating castings every day.
    With this method, you don’t spend a lot of money and the soil will retain moisture as well as creating a microorganism utopia in the container.

    Regarding putting a small plant in a huge pot, the opposite is true. The center stays too wet. You will think the soil is dry and you will keep adding water, depriving the roots of oxygen and risking root rot.

    Firehouse Subs sells their food-safe 5 gallon pickle buckets for only $2 to help fund their fire department program. They are labeled with the recycle triangle #2 HDPE- High Density Polyethelene. This is a very inexpensive way to get a hold of large, food-safe buckets for your garden if available in your area. Firehouse is located in 46 states and their website has a zip code locator. Hopefully this info will be helpful to my fellow gardeners.

    Hi jake
    I watch all your videos.
    In one video I saw your Moringa Tree,loaded with pods.
    Asian in India and all over the world love these pods.We make vegitarian curry from these pods, and also curry from moringa flowers.I live in london born in Tanzania(lived in tanzania for 28 years and then moved in UKsince last 42 years.
    In London Moringa pods are sold for £4 a kilo in asian food stores.You should try to sell some to Asians.
    This tree is also very easy and quick to grow from a branch, just stick a large branch in ground and in 6 months you will have another Moringa tree, much quicker then from seed.You can also do air layering.

    I'm in Florida and picked up a choquette from the local nursery. I'm planning on introducing it to mother earth(yard) on the first or second week in March when last frost has come and gone. Do I just added some gypsum to the soil in my yard plus the soil it had with it already. No need for new soil right? Fertilizer? From what I read loosening up the dirt around roots is ideal since this thing has been in a container. HELP ME I'm so lost.

    Hi, Great post. When planting a 25lt Hass Avocado and Mango in a 50 ln a container in Israel. Should I add some compost and fertilizer to the container bottom and mix it in the soil a bit? I have heard that it may be too strong for a container since the roots are limited to where they can go, and the tree could burn out. on the other hand I want nice fruit and the tree to grow. What's your take?

    Shamus if you would... would it be okay to use compost in a pot if you have allowed your soil mix that you plan to use to sit over a year or so in a container, to allow the compost to burn up? I'm simply curious and like I said..I've never grown a tree and you obviously know how to grow trees. I'm just wondering if you've ever tried allowing your mix to sit over a year or two in a sealed container(to keep nutrition in) and used that? Thank you very much for sharing these videos. I appreciate it.

    • @BecomingVegan
      @BecomingVegan 8 років тому

      Peat moss is mined from peat bogs, where it took thousands of years to make. It will renew but again, only after thousands of years. So for practical purposes, it is unsustainable.

    • @eleanorerosanova7538
      @eleanorerosanova7538 8 років тому +1

      You can make your own worm castings if you have worms in malasia. Simply take 2 large Tupperware containers over lap them, drill or put small holes in the bottom of the first one, then add your worms, any organic veggie or fruit peels and keep in a garage or somewhere in the house. Water from time to time to get the castings. If you have no worms you can send for them. Can you compost? Worms usually go in the compost. My Aunt used to live in Malaysia, do you have problems with snakes? I hope you are successful. I am in So. Cali. :)
