Imagine having to make 60 BUCKS AN HOUR in order to afford that apartment. People who live like this are just gluttons for punishment and are probably MISERABLE. The only other option is to have 5+ roommates.

I agree. I haven’t really seen anything that isn’t overpriced but it’s NY and people have the hots for NYC. Personally I’m in favor of my bank account! 😊 And he probably doesn’t set the prices either. If someone else owns all the apartments they may have set the prices.

I'm a Native New Yorker living in Colorado now. I'm glad I moved. My apartment is $1200 for three bedrooms, two bathrooms, parking and storage . Great views of the mountains. Those prices are criminal, and price gouging after a pandemic should be illegal.

Atlanta (Southside) here. I'm looking out my back windows/slider at my "personal forest" in the back (deep lot, and there's a creek back there). It's a 3/2 also, with an enclosed two-car garage.
Thursday I'll be paying my mortgage of $439.14. Also paying my yearly property taxes of $1100. This I can pay even on my retiree/fixed income budget. And I own this, so I'm not worried about a landlord. And this is a working-class subdivision. . . no HOA; no gated entrance. I didn't understand the importance of that when I purchased, but I know now I got lucky, there.
IDK how the young folks find housing anymore with these ever-increasing prices. 😢
An average 1 BR apartment around Atlanta costs about my whole (net) monthly pension (I'm kind of "insurance poor" but, at my age, I use it a lot.)
I sure am glad I bought my house in 1986, like my coworkers were telling me to do. I didn't want to leave my apartment because they took care of maintenance (sort of!) My coworker told me: "If you work here, you can't afford *not* to buy a house," so, reluctantly, I did.
Whew! That was close!
The 1st apt in particular is a reminder that NYC is (1) old & (2) overpriced & has a (3) hinky quality of life. However, certain folks think that job/cultural opportunities & crowded sidewalks offset that. YMMV & "to each his/her own."

Actually i can understand your point, but, millions of people wanna lives on Manhattan, so the prices keep growing up, but, if sometimes that reality changes, the prices going down. I'm brazilian and in some citys like São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Brasília, prices to rent or buy a house, apartament or lote, cost around U$250, and average sallary are the same value.

I can’t believe the rents omg $4700 for that itty bitty apt and in the basement to boot! I live in upstate NY and have a 1600 sq ft house, 3 bedrooms, 1.5 baths and pay $871/mo mortgage pymt.

You’re lucky you have a mortgage , I had one years ago and got sued and lost everything. Now I’m stuck in LA paying 5k a month for a small little house and throw all that Money away on rent.

These basement apartments in downtown Manhattan are located in the flood zone. Hurricane Sandy completely submerged these buildings basements and lower floors. There's no way I'd even CONSIDER living there, even if the rent was next to nothing.

Greedy landlords and stupid people who moved to NY thinking they are living the American dream willing to pay. Especially the immigrants they don't know any better they just want to be in America so bad but most live 50 in an apartment anyway so that makes rent cheap.
As a guy born and raised in the deep country of Idaho, I find this both fascinating and horrifying at the same time. I can never live in a city………. EVER.
Not all cities are like this. I have a 3 bedroom apartment with a little yard in the city. For 1418 a month Canadian. People don’t move here because French politics so that helps keep the rents down

I'm living in pretty much a palace in Bonn, Germany for 1100 Euros a month (+heating, electricity). And Bonn is pretty expensive. Of course compared to NYC everything feels cheap.
And I tried to live in WY and I knew it was over not even a month in. I was out of there and headed back to Vegas as soon as I could which was 6 months later!
I would literally sleep in a closet before I paid 3200 for that first apartment.
And I mean that!

Looking at NYC from where I am now, I'm glad I left.
After military service my first apartment was a 3rd Ave. studio in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn. It was small (nearly 350 sq/ft) but included private use of the yard (great for BBQ). Bathroom had a shower stall but was pretty roomy. This was 1974 and my rent was $90/month, gas/electric included. Rent did eventually go up but it was always a swell bargain. I stayed there fourteen years.

I am now 56 living in a nice house. But looking back.......my most fave time in life was age 23 when I moved into a formerly abandoned US Air Force Base housing cooperative. $236 month /everything but electric. All 3 of my dogs were welcome. I was allowed to do ANYTHING to it. I even painted the floors. Built a huge fence and dog house in backyard. I was in heaven living in that 900sq ft duplex. Hideously ugly on the outside, but totally tricked out just to my tastes on the inside. ❤️❤️❤️
in 1985 rent was $220 for large 2 bedroom apt 6 rooms close flatbush ave. blocks from Brooklyn College.

Wow 90 a month to what probably almost 2,000 probably now like 70 years ago what the pay rate was what? Around 2-5$ probably? 90 a month plus food odds and ends what 200 a month probably.. and wages went up 5-7$ probably now it’s still 7$ !?!? Is the minimum wage now 7-20$ pay rate maybe with every thing else sky high food up 5$ gas everything.. so that 200 that use to work never will again rent up 2,000$ wages only up like 18$ ?!? 20$ to pay for 2,000 in rent plus odds and ends so basically say 4000 a month.. the government can stick them odds up there ass they want us to die
Every time I watch one of your videos I am AMAZED at the rental prices in NYC. Tiny apartments (quite often) and huge prices. You need one hell of an income to live in anything even reasonably nice.
And in. Any of these building you have to be approved by the board of building members, who must like you on top of making the rent, which you need to make god knows how many times the rent to qualify. The definition of insanity.
Watching this channel makes me feel really good about my one bedroom(it's a big bedroom with a huge walk-in closet) with a big bathroom with central air and heat for 625$ a month. I've lived here 9 years and the apartment is only 11 years old so it was pretty new when I moved in. I love my apartment and every year when they ask me if I'm re-signing my lease I tell them I plan on dying in this apartment lol.
I hope you carry renter's insurance. I loved my apartment of 25 years, but lost it in a fire. We did have ins. which payed for the motel for 2 months while we looked for another and workers removed and cleaned my salvageable belongings and stored it. Everyone should have renters ins. It isn't expensive, but well worth it. It also covers other things like all your food if your fridge dies. Some landlords will even knock off some of the rent if you have it.

I lived in NYC 2015-2016. Our 2BR/1BA in UWS cost $4,350. It didn’t have W/D in unit (did in the basement of building) but it had an elevator and was completely remodeled.
It just rented for over $6,500 this year.
Costs are nuts.

I downsized after divorce three years ago and I've never been happier. I'm 51 now and the older I get, the less space and belongings I find myself needing. I've really pared everything down and it's refreshing not having to keep track of a bunch shit or fill a bunch of unused space in an oversized apartment. Life is cozy and I love it. You will too.

@@greenlightstudios3816 If you have the slightest sensitivity to the venom, necrotic gangrene can set in. Several people in history have died because such gangrene kept spreading until there was nothing left to safely remove from their body.
I'm not saying that the worst-case scenario is everyday common, but it is definitely NOT just an "I got bit, and it hurts" thing either. Neither is the Black Widow bite. It's very rarely fatal but hellishly painful and causes extreme cramps.
The BW antivenom only works ONCE. So, do you take your chances and save that antivenom for a possible later bite at old age (when it CAN kill you), or do you suffer through total body cramps and "assume" that THOSE won't kill you?
Some small few people have died "saving" that one shot antivenom for a possible later date. In other words, neither you nor I know what's going to happen in that situation until it happens (hopefully never).

I"m supportive of the idea that all so called *landlords* need to live in the boxes they've created for others to live in.. for at the very least.. a year. 2 years would be ideal. Only then are they *allowed* to rent their place out. Let's make it happen, poor people. We ultimately got the power, because we're the labor that makes it all go.

What you can regulate tho is how housing and apartments can be built and to what specifications and that won’t be shot down in any court.
You see, after hearing these rent prices for some of these places I was thinking more of the people plan a revolt against these landlords and NOT rent these places UNTIL they come up with more REASONABLE RENTS!
They have a specific demographic they rent to and none of them look like Charles. You can pull those prices in those areas, not in the outer boroughs. This is why lower income people can't find reasonable places to live, homelessness is rampant, and poor people get priced our even with government help. I worked for housing, a lot of decent people who loose vouchers because of greedy landlords and brokers. NY is a broker state, and yes, credit is important.

It's all about money. NYC property taxes are crippling (somebody gotta pay for all the freebies). No one gets off cheap. Yeah, some landlords are douchbags but a lot ain't. Saw (seen??) on the net that average NYC rents top $2,000. Some considerably higher. No thanks, I'll stick to upstate. Paid off our four bedroom, two story in 2016.

Don't forget originally most of these brownstones and similar such buildings were literally _single family homes_ when they were built. In that first one someone will pay over $3k to live what was the servant's basement scullery room (where they cleaned and washed dishes back in 1890 or so). It's absolutely ridiculous.

That happens when you aren't close to trash. NYC has an infestation of roaches rats and mice. No one talks about that, but I lived there as I know.
Not to mention the smell on a hot humid day. The dumpster at my apt is emptied frequently but you can still smell it if you're within a few yards of it. No one wants the parking spaces near it 😂

Watching this video makes me grateful for my job that allowed me to rent nice 2 bedroom apartment. As this is small town in Switzerland my social life is on-line only but at least I am not claustrophobic. Prices in NYC are absolutely insane it makes Zurich, Switzerland budget friendly place

Can't forget the fatal flooding from recent years' storm. Esp. wouldn't want to be trapped in a space w/o working window grates to allow quick emergency exits - being in the basement with dirty feet of water sounds like a flippin' nightmare.
I pay over $1400 for a 2 bed 1.5 bath townhouse with attached garage. Even then it’s overpriced. Landlord told me that if I were a new resident they’d charge almost $1800, but I got a lower rate since I had to renew for a year. It’s technically too expensive for me to realistically afford because I barely break even with expenses each month. Living in NYC at these prices would be impossible.

I love watching these videos because they make me SO HAPPY I’m not in NYC. We have a beautiful house with plenty room, two-car garage, porch, deck, shed, front & back yards, etc. Nice neighborhood in a charming small city with great downtown with shopping, dining just down the street. Mortgage is well under $1000/month. And we do have museums, theatre, music, etc right here in our town. NYC? Heck, no!

The weird pipe in the first apartment is the gas line coming into the building. You definitely can't remove it and I would not recommend bumping into it, cuz it looks ancient. The weird box is the same thing for the electric. The duct that the wires come through leaks pretty often, so that's something to look forward to if you get this apartment!

Actually, it is the pipe from the old radiator which used to sit between the two windows. The gas for the stove was always on the other side where it is now. I know. I lived on the 3rd floor in that building in 1990 for $350/mo.
@@christinavonsiebenburgen6062 Wow that seems like an incredible price even for 33 years ago, must have been nice! But I'm still absolutely positive the white pipe entering through a sleeve at the front wall (2:20 in video) is a gas pipe and service valve, which then goes down into the cellar, through the meters and back up risers into the apartments. Doesn't have anything to do with where the stove is located. There's an old radiator valve (grey/silver) and stub of a return pipe off to the right where a radiator would have been.

It's probably a boiler, not gas. Gas is under pressure like plumbing, so the pipes are the same 1" as plumbing. Old buildings heated with boilers, and the pipes are large to radiate the heat.
Watching these apartment videos invokes more fear in me than a scary movie. I guess people can adapt to just about anything.
This just reminded why I live on 2 acres, 1500 sq ft house, in a rural area- OWN my home after paying 1/5th of that rent for 15 years…NO THANK YOU….$4900 a month would buy you a DREAM HOUSE ANYWHERE in the U.S. but NYC or CA?? Just WHY???

I'm in the North Dallas area. $1400 mortgage for 2300 sq ft, 3 bd 2 bath, 3 car garage on 1/4 acre treed lot in a cul de sac with tons of green space. Couldn't make me live in NYC, even at gun point. And ya'll can keep your negative comments to yourselves. Lol Dallas is awesome.
I’m in a 4 bed, 3 bath on 1.5 acres in the North Georgia mountains for HALF of $3200/month. And I own, not rent. I cannot imagine living in that NYC “prison cell.”

This is absolutely mind boggling that you literally pay that much for a tiny place. Where I live we have 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, living room, family room, basement w/ laundry area, kitchen, dining area, 3 car garage, deck, patio, pool and a little bit over an acre lot for $1830 mortgage payment.

Basement apartments in NYC can also get flooded during heavy rain, storms, etc. If they have special drainage still can still get flooded if blocked but anything.

No way, that price for an underground/basement apt is unreal for the 1st two apts & the 4th one is better, but only if it was $1200 p/month. If it rains a lot & you are living in the 1st two apts, you are drowning. $7900 for the 3rd one, is a down payment on a small hse with an FHA loan in other places. Great video.

For the first apartment you could move the "closet" and have a custom murphy bet built around the pipes. Then it would be your couch in the day time, and bed at night. The couch would face the fireplace and you could put the TV on that wall. With a rising coffee table, you would be set and still have the appearance of space sometimes. I think I would put a stained glass film on the windows too.

In that shoebox there's no need for that fireplace--definitely takes up too much room; the stove is too big, and the refridgerator is in the wrong place. Also, the shower is a sardine can. 👎👎👎👎👎👎

It's interesting seeing all these apartments, but the more I see whether low end or upscale, the more I realize I could never live in NYC and wouldn't want to.

Knowing that I own a 1200 square foot house thats 2 floors with a garage and half an acre backyard for 1500 a month is definitely making me feel good. I will never understand why people live in cities like this.

That first apartment is too small for the price, and the intrusions of the fireplace and pipe limit the use of what little space there is. The windows don't seem to be able to function as emergency exits. Charles' basement unit was a much better deal for the money! The third apartment is legally only a two-bedroom, so despite the fact that the rooms are large it's a bit too pricey. There are better places to share for $4,000 each. The last one with the humungous bedroom and tons of storage space would work well for a couple, and each of them has their own bathroom (which some couples prefer). The price on that one is reasonable by NYC standards. You have a winner here, Charles!

After yesterdays ''extravaganza" apt, this was a good comparison showing how average people live and they don't live in $16m apts. These weren't horrible by any means, just lacked space, but if you have enough light, it's really not so bad. That being said because I've lived in small apts in the city. My husband used to call them converted elevator shafts they call apts....lol.
I feel like I’m an average person but I could never afford any of these places. To split a small apt with no CA or in-unit W/D but pay upwards of $2,000 for your share of the rent?

After yesterday's 5000 square foot showplace to these...omg. The 1st is nothing more than a glorified closet. & like Charles said about the 2nd, "unfortunately" & ruff by v the garbage area. Good thing he started to redeem himself with the last 2. & the last definitely had enough storage space in a doorman building wth an elevator (2 bonuses). Sure how Cash remembered to get his sweatshirt out of the dryer. You know that 1st shower was miniscule if he turned it on while just turning around.
