Oh man, Garey. Don Brewer made me want to be a drummer. I got their "Live Album" in 1971. Made me a life long fan of GFR. "Live Album" was the first thing I ever heard from them. I wore it out. Great analysis. Brewer has been slagged as a drummer as was Farner's guitar work. Schacher was a truck driver as a bass player. All three were excellent musicians. I have most of their stuff. Thanks.

( Reposting this as the link I gave you didn't work. Now it is correct)
Hey Garey. Hi sir. I've seen all your reactions here. I'm a subscriber and have been a drummer for almost 50 years. I consider myself to be a very good drummer, not only my speed, chops, etc..but my creativity. I love all the greats, Crupa, L. White, Cobham, Gadd, Bruford, Paice, Palmer, Bonham, Peart, Ward, etc., etc., etc., etc., etc.. The God of drumming, in my opinion...especially for technique, energy, pure chops and speed especially, has always been Buddy Rich. Well, I saw a drummer about 8 years ago on UA-cam, and he was in New Zealand, doing freestyle drum solos on the streets during party nights, weekends in front of many drunk passersby with a small but dynamic kit, crammed into a corner of a sidewalk. I watched many of the guys videos..and followed him for several years and he was actually snatched up by the great old 60's early 70's band, Blood Sweat and Tears. They knew a find when they saw one. After following the guys vids on YT for a few years...checking out new ones I saw of him when they were posted, I must tell you, this guy is the only drummer I have ever seen who I truly believe, not only gives Buddy Rich a run for his money, but SURPASSES him. Trust me, I know that is a mouthful and then some to say....I know. I REALLY know and I don't take it lightly. However, realize too, the videos of this young man which I will now paste here for you, show him at maybe 21 years of age. I wonder about Buddy's ability at that age. Well, there are things this guy does at 21, that Buddy could not do at any age. I was and am still shocked...SHOCKED at this guy's talent, skills and massive creativity and capability. Is he a "natural"...a "freak"...a "one in a million"...probably. Not to say he hasn't surely practiced his ass off for years now...but he can do all he does with what seems like relative EASE. That is in my opinion, not only a person who has done tons of practice but who has a massive amount of natural genetic ability, coordination etc. The chops on this guy...just freaky. The dexterity, agility, looseness, awareness, sonic feel, rhythm, polyrhythms, uncanny speed, coordination, HANDS, touch, dynamics, sensibility, feel, CREATIVITY and unfathomable stamina...are just insane. And he remains calm as you will notice, whilst doing the seemingly impossible. I really noticed how serene he seems to be mentally, while doing all he does. At one point or two, a person actually comes up behind him and wraps their hands across his eyes and this guy kept playing, blind....and accurately doing even more crazy stuff. It was a passing drunk person it seems that covered his eyes, yet he kept playing. So please do a reaction to ANY of his videos. Here I give you a link to an 11 video playlist of him just sweating his ass off on a hot New Zealand street with partying, dancing drunkards all around him, as he does the unbelievable. Even with sweaty hands, the things he does with the sticks which you will see further along on each video, are just mind numbing. I am not easily impressed and this guy truly makes me feel like a weak drummer in comparison....and that hurts...hehe, especially considering my decades in music. But hats off to him. Here you are sir. Enjoy, ua-cam.com/video/videoseries/v-deo.html frameborder="0" [ And please watch all of these...time flies when you do but it will take a good 1 and a half or 2 hours. I guarantee you this, you will not be bored for a second. And again, please do a reaction as I would love to hear your opinions on this man. ] Thanks Garey. Great channel.

@@65drummer1 from what I understand, mark did not want to tour and Don and Mel did, they couldn't go on tour without mark legally, so they fooled him into giving away his rights, and then they could go out on tour. Nothing for nothing, but Mark was not thinking clearly signing a contract without having it looked at by a lawyer. they were my first band that I was totally into, I saw them in the early 70's, but I was young and don't remember much of it.

GFR was an odd band, the lead guitarist, Mark Farner was not the best guitarist in rock. The band was performing once, and the crowd was booing Mark Farner, he said, if any of you think you can do better, come on up here. Rumor has it that Eric Clapton came out of the crowd and walked onstage. Maybe an urban myth, I don't know.

Urban myth, never happened. Grand Funk was such a
great live band can't believe anyone would boo them either. Plus Farner was a very good player besides having a golden set of pipes . Farner was a top shelf front man , Schacher was a monster bass player and brewer was a powerhouse, just a great band. And being more r&b based than blues based they had a unique style for such a heavy band. No band from that era brought the energy to the stage like G.F.R. Do not care what band I was in I would not want Grand Funk opening for me!
