“How many drummers does it take to change a light bulb? 10. One to change the bulb, and the other 9 to discuss how Steve Gadd would have done it... Here all week...!
Fluid speed, great dynamics, wonderful footwork and hand control. Love the tempo. Gadd, a superlative professional. Thank you Garey. You're a fine teacher for sure.
Hey Man! Your reaction video is so much fun to watch. As an old jazz trumpeter I really appreciate your insight into composition and grooves while watching these gifted musicians. If I was still blowin' I know you could hang with me. Thanks for the effort and enthusiasm brother.
I'm diggin your videos Garey! Your enthusiasm towards these drummers and just the music in general is inspiring! Your commentary is very good and appropriate. Keep it up!!
Thanks for this reaction! Not a drummer here, but I am a music enthusiast and love learning more new things about great musicians and instruments. My intro to Steve Gadd was the same as a lot of people's: the title track from Steely Dan's watershed album, AJA. I haven't really delved that much into his catalog or his playing with other great artists, but I'm trying to change that now!
First heard of him in college in the 70’s. As a guitar affectionado I never really listened to the drums until I heard Lenore on the Chick Corea Leprechaun album. Gadd carved such a deep groove I couldn’t help but listen to it over and over. It taught me to pay attention to drums. His playing on that song is my favorite Gadd drumming ever.
Just came across your channel. Really enjoying the videos, your enthusiasm and knowledge. I'd love to see you analyse Tommy Igoe's La Fiesta that he did at a tribute to Buddy Rich concert.
Garey, another fantastic reaction. As a total Non-Drummer I haven't the slightest idea what's happening - only that I like it! But to have you breaking down the sections helps me understand the complex timing and technique. The BONUS - your enthusiasm. The first time I watched one of your analysis videos I thought it was kind of a fluke, like maybe you just really enjoyed that particular drummer. I believe that first video was your reaction to Neil Peart. But your level of intensity and enjoyment is no fluke - I enjoy your enjoyment as much as I do your technical know how. Thanks and as always I look forward to more from you. From a guitarist who might've been a drummer if only I'd lived in a house that could have handled a drum kit!
Love the enthusiasm in your video's. I would love to hear your take on some of the great video's by René Creemers, a totally awesome drummer from the Netherlands.
Thanks for this. I'm looking forward to see Steve Gadd perform live in the Netherlands with the fantastic Dutch harmonica player Hermine Deurloo in February. (P.S. Garey, you got your Wurlitzers and Leslies mixed up there for a minute ;) ).
Have a listen to this and enjoy: Steve Gadd killer solo with Blicher Hemmer Gadd 2019. The solo's, (sticks and brushes), are great. But the groove on the last tune....oh yea. I think it would make a great reaction video.
Wow. Most of James Taylor’s band there. Steve Gadd on drums, Jimmy Johnson on bass and Martin Landau on guitar. Could even be Larry Goldings on keyboards.
Love this series! Could you do Marco Minnenman's drum solo on "Time Check" with the Buddy Rich band? I would love to see what you think. I see in it a nice blend of homage and personal voice.
Love the commentary. Great insights on the drumming techniques. One suggestion: the audio quality on the videos you're watching is really bad because we are just hearing what your mic pics up through your computer speakers. No bass at all. The kick is basically inaudible. It would be preferable if you could wear headphones during your commentary and then overdub the audio from the video directly.
Great video! Love your enthusiasm and quick dissections of what is happening. Just a little nitpicking, you confused wurlitzers with a leslie amp. A wurlitzer is one of the first electronic pianos, similar to the Fender Rhodes. The leslie amplifier is the amplifier with the rotating speaker.
I really enjoy watching your videos I have one question though, do you have a high pass filter on your sound because the kick drum doesn’t really come through and I’m on a system with a subwoofer. I found this video on UA-cam and there’s plenty of kick drum almost too much. I’ve noticed this on all of your videos, so I’m just curious are you doing something intentional? Or is it just happening when using the video software? Or ?
you should really figure out how to use direct audio. What i'm hearing sounds like an AM transistor radio. No lows whatsoever. I can't hear half the things you're talking about.
You absolutely need to check out some Mike Portnoy stuff from Dream Theater. Check out Dance of Eternity, some really great and complicated drumming/rhythms. If you check out some more metal drummers I'll happily follow your channel. Here's a good link to it ua-cam.com/video/RppQTB2IknE/v-deo.html, I think you'll be really impressed, the guy is a machine/human metronome. One of the best drummers of all time in my opinion.
That is a nice analysis of Steve Gadd's artistic drumming. However, what are your credentials as a teacher of percussion? I haven't noticed any of your videos on UA-cam whatsoever, or is this your humble opinion of what you interpret as solid drumming techniques.
Oh and since this is my day for complaining a little bit when you show examples of your right hand and hold a whole sticks it’s right behind the video of the artist so we can’t see what you’re doing so maybe help us out be be mindful of that I guess hate to complain because everybody gets so mad about complainers but in a selfish aspect I want to see what you’re doing as a student of the drums I so much love drums as a bass player I wish I was a drummer but I can’t do it but I want to know how to do it so I watch it all the time.
it would be useful if this alleged Maestro performed phrasing, exercises and feelings directly on the drums. not to tell but to explain technically and substantially.
Personal Preference for sure. Be a positive person and say what you like, not what you don't like. The world is full of complainers. Why be part of that crowd?! Thanks!
Steve Gadd’s drumming in Aja by Steely Dan is life changing. No pop song had a solo like that ever.
Steve is a magician on the drums!
Steve’s one of my all time favorite groove architects, the master.
Great video.

Garry, you are a passionate musician analyzing passionate musicians and I love how passionate you are about it. Thanks so much.
Thanks Billy!

Garey you really know how to analyze....unreal. AND your right Steve God
Garey is da MAN !!!!! Awesome videos.

Steve Gadd is my all time favorite drummer. Would love to see a reaction video on Keith Carlock and/or Tony Williams.
Thanks!
Steve Gadd played with Eric Claptons band in the early 2000’s. Best drummer I’ve seen on stage personally. He’s always impressed me.👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Love the enthusiasm in your video's. I would love to hear your take on some of the great video's by René Creemers, a totally awesome drummer from the Netherlands.
I'm digging your channel man👌👌😊

Jimmy handed his bass solo over to Landau when he got to the higher register. And vice versa - So great!

More Gadd......Please
Also could you do a reaction to Toss Panos? He’s got quite a few videos out there with Larry Carlton and Robin Ford as well as others.
Send me a drum solo link. Thanks!

I wish I felt about anything the way you feel about drums.
PM and we should talk.
I would love if you react to Matt Garstka. You could do his non-animals as leaders stuff too. Like "Matt Garstka Spotlight Solo #1"
Do an analysis on Horacio Hernandez
Could you do a reaction on Steely Dan’s AJA
Gadd and Wayne Shorter are Magical together on Aja.
In addition to Jones and Gadd,
Buddy Rich and Roy Haynes also were dancers. Maybe there is a correlation.
Right, but 99% of drummers are not Rich Gadd HAynes or Jones
It’s that internal clock

It's my video software.
Way back home.-Wilton Felder
When are you going to do Don Brewer! One of the most solid drummers I've ever heard!
Please recommend a video. Thanks!

DETESTO JAZZ FUSION. É UMA BAGUNÇA DO CARALHO, E PRA MIM NÃO TEM UM BATERA QUE PRESTA.
Please send a link. Thanks!
A better Steve Gadd performance might have been playing with Al Dimeola.
After this I’m off to watch some paint dry.
Have fun getting high off of the fumes.
it would be useful if this alleged Maestro performed phrasing, exercises and feelings directly on the drums. not to tell but to explain technically and substantially.
💤💤💤💤💤💤💤💤
He is doing alot of ratamacues
Sounds like 80 percent weather report and 30 percent Dan....0 Percent Bee gees
Shit
Disappointing solo!!! I did not like it, but that is just my opinion
