michael bass it sure is. When I was in my 20’s, I was still in that overhyped, overplaying, full of energy mode from playing covers of fusion & hard rock. My mentor suggested I audition for some country gigs. Wow, I learned real quick what I was doing and how to appreciate simplicity. I ended up playing a few gigs and it inspired me to rethink my whole approach to the bass.

It's a pleasure to see you perform and particularly to do Leland Sklars excellent work. Some of his best was done with James Taylor. To have you do so in Vienna is an extra treat. I lived there as a very young boy. We had a house across from the wine gardens in Grinzing, and I was pleased to return to see it a while ago with my wife. Guitar players absolutely amaze me. I've been playing drums since 1964 and when rehearsing/performing I'll focus in on either bassist or six string guy and see if I can understand how playing guitar is done, I can't imagine how those ten fingers know what to do. It's all very abstract to me...never could make sense of what the logic is that accounts for the many variations and configurations that make one a guitarist. When I brought this up during our warming up minutes some time back, my guitarist said that he and the bassist couldn't figure out how drummers can do what they do when having to work all four limb, each doing a different thing in different time. I guess we are all hardwired as kids to survey the instrument world and rather quickly, one stands out and yells, "Hey, it's me...you were born to play me, me, me!" There must be something to this because the first time I sat at a kit, I just started playing a typical high-hat, snare 4/4 groove based upon what I saw Ringo playing on Ed Sullivan while kicking the bass out of pure instinct because I did not consciously know what I was doing. I thought, well this is it and drums will sure be a far better enterprise than taking years of piano or violin lessons and still sounding like a putz. By the way, young lady, you own the bass

I love this series. Not only does it put the work of very tasteful and talented players like Leland Sklar and Nathan East into focus, but it really gives a great look into how different the approaches of different bassists are.
    Great stuff, Julia!

Thank you for showing us the power the bass line adds to a song. I never realized. Wonderful presentation and production!

I'm most impressed by how he can get through country music! That's the hardest genre I've ever tried to just find the sweet spot and he falls right into it.
Do some of George Strait's songs and you'll see! You know the key if you follow his vocal some, but it's hard!

It was a Live DVD of Phil Collins where I got to know Leland for the very first time in my life and I was really fascinated, not only of his bass playing but even more of his appearance with that incredible beard ... From that time on I'm following his career und fortunately enough I could see him LIVE with TOTO in Austria. I wished Lee would be asked by TOTO to substitute Mike Porcaro who was already seriously ill at that time and to my biggest surprise - when the band began to play - he was the bass player during that TOTO-Tour. I was bowled over by that situation ...

Nice video, Julia! And well played! :D
One of my Leland Sklar favourite bass lines is "Find a way to my heart" from Phil Collins' "...But Seriously" album.
Another is the live version of Collins' "You'll be in my heart".
    Beautiful playing!

That's a killer arrangement on Rosanna. And the bass line just hovers over those changes so gracefully. Pure genius... and you captured it beautifully! Kudos.

Inside Out/Phil C.from 1990 features Leland killing it towards the middle. At times, it appears like he’s using 3 fingers, as he magically unleashes in a fury

I've been a fan of Lee's since about 1971 when I got my first 2 James Taylor albums (Sweet Baby James and Mud Slide Slim and the Blue Horizon. ), but when In the pocket came out, Mexico in particular, I learned to listen to James' music focusing on Lee's bass part. it was always complimentary, supporting the rune, but would often be a counter melody, perfectly mixed, and often on a path of its own. Almost comical at times seeing James sing a very mellow tune, but at times Lee ripping off some otherwise almost unnoticeable riffs.
