I love the fact that you could easily see that bass played by any djent/progmetal bassist and Sklar is playing it the simpliest, sincerest and yet more powerful way possible.
I dont think Ive ever seen a musician like Lee. You can tell he's not thinking about what's coming next or paying attention to technique. He's so comfortable with the music and the instrument he's literally living note to note and enjoying every single second
It always amazes me that a guy like Lee - who has played with so many great musicians and is so respected in the music industry - comes across totally down to earth like the grandfather everyone would love to have. I've seen people with only a fraction of his success going crazy and behaving like they're some godly entity.
Leeland. You're one of the last of the era of the greats man. I want to thank you, for decades of helping create beautiful, beautiful music man. thank you
That siding start in the beginning got me goose bumps. I gotta say, the legend is the legend. It's so enjoyable to watch Lee playing. He makes any song sound good lol.
Lee is definitely in the top 2 Bassists ever! Probably has both spots locked up, IMO! Yup that good! I remember listening to Mud Slide Slim when it came out and I wanted to meet them all! Lee was....... well.... Unique! Look how far he's gone! Somebody is going to get a real nice prize! GOOD LUCK! And thank you Lee for all that GOODNESS throughout my life! GREAT endorsement for taking care of these Majestic friends right!
I mean, if left to it's own devices, technology and AI will make our music and it'll do it better. However... it'll have no "soul". It'll be interesting to see where things go.
Le has literally played with EVERYONE!! If you've every heard a song on the radio, probably him. And yet, playing bass is his second best quality... the guy is the kindest human being on the planet. Such a great great guy... Great cause, and a beautiful bass.
A one of a kind instrument from a one of a kind artist. Actually several one of a kind artists as it’s Sheldons talents as a Luthier that brought Lees vision into being. Two master craftsman working together to put a world class bass in your hands and all you have to do is bid on it. That the entire effort is for an amazing cause is just icing on the cake. Hurry. Go bid. I’m going to!
Lee, Phil, and Daryl, now that’s a killer combo love these guys and their music. Does everyone here know just how great a player Lee is, simply awesome🎸🎸
Absolutely love Lee's ear for melody. I'm weird, but tiny sections or fills in songs can really hit me in the feels! 5:59 - 6:03 is defo one of those lines that I could listen to on repeat. If you listen from 5:52 to get a feel for what he's been doing previous and then when he changes it up for the beginning of the outro. A bit of suspense as he returns to this a few bars after along with other fills for the outro, he changes his timing and plays fewer notes in the bar, but sustaining the notes a little longer. Love it! ; )
That intro just sums it up perfectly. I was a little skeptic about this Dingwall ”hype“ but as soon i tried one i was flabbergasted, its such a perfectly and versatile sounding bass
@@DingwallGuitars thank you for asking, I am the proud owner of the D-Roc standard. I absolutely love this bass, so it won’t be my last Dingwall, if the standard is this good I would love to play a custom.
2:53 nice fill.. Reminded me of Mike Inez's fills from AIC and Sabbath in the late 80's early 90's.. I think he uses it in "Down in a Hole" in AIC's unplugged as well.
I could never afford to even bid on something like this. But what an amazing piece of musical history and engineering. As a lifelong musician at 48, playing since I was 13. I love quality instruments... could only dream of owning one like THIS!.
Lee. Thank you- for this! My big brother is Joel Grundahl - a guitarist of note - and good friends with Sheldon. :) I played oboe as a student. But I moved onto soprano and barry sax. The reason I am contacting you is what you play. When I played barry sax, I would do it in a basement. The sound was amazing. Going from 'top' (oboe) to 'bottom' (barry) - it gave me a different perspective. Often, I look at Glenn Gould and his left hand. It is that same thing - the bass just drives the music. Anyhow. Thank you Lee!
I wish I can get to meet him someday. Amazing bassist and seems a great person to hang out with. I bet he’s got some awesome stories from his time in the road
What a magnificent thing to do Lee. You are a very rare human being. What a great charity, and the charity is blessed to have you. You are Probably the greatest , no not probably ARE the greatest. bassist i have seen in my 71 yearson the north side of dirt 😂 Such a unselfish thing to do .
What a great cause to auction this choice bass off for. Elephants are the best. I never liked 5 string basses and noticed you rarely play the B string. I'm sure this will sell for a pretty penny, it is as beautiful as the elephants.
The only reason I am playing a fender jazz deluxe is because I can’t afford this bass. I can but I just need to bust my ass and get it. Cause my tone is worth it. Bass is my LIFE!!! Thanks lee!
How a not-so-complex bass line becomes sophisticated and harmonious in the hands of Lee Sklar. Long live the master bass player! And of course a first-rate instrument helps a lot!! Congratulations!
Dingwall, you basses is just awesome. Without doubt the best I have ever played. Mine is actually so good in overtones, harmonics etc, that I wonder if every basses from you are this awesome, or if I just got lucky. Some day, I will get myself another one from you 🎸
Pleasure to hear. I like that he is not trying to play ideally. It is a great lesson. Sometimes you can go slower, sometimes faster, sometimes let the note cut through the mix by picking it harder. This enchants the song with feelings and humanness
The Elephant Sanctuary in Hohenwald is a godsend for our region. Thank you for aware of this and being a blessing Lee. Us mere mortals really appreciate your kind sensibility.
Lee is a reference, because he has a sound and a personality of his own to play. This timbre that he used on the bass is not just anyone who plays in a way that the sound does not embarrass. Teacher!
Stunning instrument in the hands of an artist that can make it come alive. Lee’s playing on this album is wonderful and it’s baffling to think the album is nearly 35 years old as I write this, as the songs sound timeless.
I am happy not to be the only to hear this or at least to mention it. I believed I was crazy. In fact it disturbs me a lot. I can not focus on something else. I will listen to the CD version cause I've never noticed this before.
@@vberthome It actually sounds slightly "off" when the bass is upfront like this, but I think it is quite deliberate and masterful. By letting the kick drum hit just a microsecond ahead of his bass note, he makes the bass guitar lay into the mix without competing or stepping over the drums. When everything is at the right volume, the overall effect is as though the kick drum itself is sounding these bass notes. It makes it sound rounder, thicker, and fuller. That's why in a world of Charles Berthouds, Victor Wootens, and John Patituccis, a player like Lee Sklar has still enjoyed secure employment. In the same way, some of the "simplest" drummers - Kenny Aranoff, Max Weinberg, etc. - have also had secure employment. It all gets down to how you do the simple thing that you do.
@@gentrymagician I was obsessed by this too, thanks for mentioning it. Handmade sidechain comp at the recording stage! There's no way it's not intentional and it's really clever, the engineers sure must love mixing a track with Lee on bass. Overall his playing is really an example: soulful, perfectly balanced, and above all he's not playing more than what's needed. A master for sure.
Wish I had the money to buy this wonderful Sklar's bass ! As a fan of Phil since early Genesis time and also he's solo carreer, it will be incredible. I hope the winner will be a real Leland's fan!
I wanna get old like this.
Pure grace and generosity.
Right now he's touring with Lyle Lovett and his big band. He loves the road!
The only thing that has grown old is his hair. The man is wine.
He is 29yo

I THINK FOR LEAVE THIS PLACE
Its because he never got all strung out on the dope and booze ...so the demons left him alone and just let him play on .

Same here
Incredible sound and player
Outstanding! His playing dynamics and feel are insane!!! Top sounding dingwall bass as a bonus! Thanks for that Mr.Dingwall.
Your welcome!
Leland's playing should be standard in ALL bass teaching courses. And that signature Dingwall bass is beautiful!
This is the kind of playing isn’t going to go viral but is truly amazing to watch if you are musician.
It's already Viral It's Leland Sklar playing with Phil Collins where have you been?
Ahh, such a good man, such a good bass, such a good charity work. Proud of you!
We are really proud of Lee for supporting this cause.

Hey this is the guy that built the Ark! ✌🏻😁
In a UA-cam world of insanely skilled players, the simplicity of a good melody, dynamics, sense of rhythm, timing, and finesse still win.
Thank you for sharing Lee. You are part of our lives along with Phill 🙌
You took me to another place with that playing sir. Simply brilliant.

No "special stuff" or techniques - simple RHYTHM and LOVE for the music and this instrument. That´s all it needs and Leland shows how it works.
