- In this episode, we take a look back at what it was like to see the original DIE HARD on opening night.
Bruce Willis stepped away from his hit TV show, Moonlighting, to take a shot at the big leagues with Die Hard. He plays a New York City Detective named John McClane. It's Christmastime and John is arriving in LA to hopefully reconcile with his estranged wife Holly who has taken their children out to LA for her job at the Nakatomi Corporation. There's a big Christmas party going on at Holly's office building, called Takatomi Plaza, and John is headed there not knowing what kind of reception he'll get from his wife.
A group of German terrorists, led by a man named Hans Gruber, would crash the party and hold everyone hostage while they attempted to break into a vault in the building to steal a bunch of bearer bonds.
Die Hard was a huge success for the studio and for Bruce Willis. It would go on to spawn 4 sequels. However, none of those were Christmas themed like the original.
In 2018, Comedy Central hosted a celebrity roast of Bruce Willis. During this show, Bruce Willis took the podium and announced that Die Hard was NOT a Christmas movie. Everyone thought that settled the great debate. But did it? Pretty much everything said at these roasts are said with a high level of sarcasm. This is why I still contend that it is, indeed, a Christmas movie.
Alan Rickman put on a Master Acting class as Hans Gruber. He is the ultimate villain.
