Medical student Herbert West (played by Jeffrey Combs) takes his research too far in Switzerland and ends up having to complete his studies in Massachusetts where he ends up rooming with another med student named Dan. Dan is more straight laced than Herbert and is dating the Dean's daughter Megan (played by Barbara Crampton).
Dan soon learns about Herbert's research because his cat Rufus has died mysteriously. Not to worry though as Herbert brings the cat back to life with his little glowing green reagent. Poor Rufus comes back but much worse than if he had been born in the Pet Sematary. The cat is deranged and attacks both of them until Dan can kill it again.
Dan tries to tell the Dean about Herbert's miracle drug but the Dean only gets mad and suspends Dan and kicks Herbert out of school.
Still determined to push his research further, Herbert and Dan break into the morgue to test the drug out on a human cadaver. Each test has disastrous results and sends the men spiraling down a rabbit hole of destruction as more people die and get brought back to life.
