I had an office chair much like this and I enjoyed it's comfort for years. I wish I still had it as I've only got pictures of it left. This type of seating is a real joy to sit on.
I didn't think it would be this easy, but I have company coming and my craft room is also a guest bedroom so my paint covered chair looked awful. This project turned out so nice. Thank you for well presented instructional video. I'm thrilled.
That's so great to hear, we'd love to see how it came out! Feel free to send us pics via email if you don't mind sharing: makersmill@onlinefabricstore.net
Thanks so much. I didn't know how to take the back cover off the chair I got for for free. The fabric had a rip but with your help I will give it a go.
I’m currently following your video for two office chair reupholstering. They are dismantled and now unstapling the upholstery. I will be referring back to your video for the next step, stapling new fabric onto the frames which is an important part of your video right now.
What a well presented, lovely video. A great result and promoting getting more life out of our things rather than just throwing them away and being wasteful.
Mahalo so much! Awesome tutorial...short and to the point. I’ve reupholstered many office chairs and other things. Was just about to start the upholstering on a chair for my Godson. Painted yesterday. First office chair tutorial I’ve ever watched. It taught me a couple things I never thought of. Much appreciated. Big Aloha from Maui. Have a blessed holiday season. 🌺🙏🤗❤️🌈🎚🕊🙌❣️
Brilliant, many thanks for this, I was just going to reupholster an old grubby office chair with a decent couple of pieces of leather I cut out of an old sofa, hadn't considered spray painting the plastic, that looks like a great idea. Right then, time to get started...
Thank you so much for this tutorial....I have a couple of office chairs I want to reupholster....after watching this tutorial, I am not longer intimidated to start the project.
That is the best I have seen, mine is desperate to get upholstered so got the material and did this and it looks like just bought. Thank you for the tutorial
I was stuck on the back of the chair. I didn't want it to get messed up. I wasn't sure how to remove it. Thanks for the tip. I'll give mine a try now! :-)
Lovely instruction vid - very nicely presented. Thanks so much. I would say the resale value is with a base-matching black for the plastic backing though - 😃👀 (You might try using plastic restorer (w plasticiser in it) instead of paint - sand lightly and apply. bc the black is in the plastic and not a coating. Nice even tone.)
Good luck getting the back cover off some chairs as they are not made to be removed. Even though they are likely clipped on it may still end up snapping off.
When you use spray paint, does the chair not smell like that after it dries?? I used spray paint for a project and I could always smell the paint afterward.
Yeah, sometimes it does take a while to air that smell out, but it should go away eventually. I don't know if there's some sort of clear coat that could help with that.
If the cushion is quite contoured on the chair back and base (humanscale Freedom), should you glue the fabric to the foam before stapling? I basically think that if I pull it taught like your example it will be like a trampoline until the leather starts to sag…
Sure! That method would work well for your chair. I would recommend a spray like this - www.onlinefabricstore.com/pro-stick-65-hi-strength-web-spray-adhesive-.htm
You will want to use either rebond foam or a really high density foam. You can find them here - www.onlinefabricstore.com/product-group-foam-and-padding.aspx?density=high-density or rebond foam www.onlinefabricstore.com/product-group-foam-and-padding.aspx?product=foam&product_sub_group=rebond-foam
There might be some clips. Try sliding a knife around the edges and see if you can find any clips. Be careful not to break them, because it might be a little tough to get it back into place if its broken.
The picture of Richard O'Brien? Bro, you think that's a picture of me? Your defense to the objectively creepy comment you made on this video about chair re-upholstery is to poorly attempt to make fun of what you think I look like? I'd have thought that as a WebDev, you'd have a keener eye than that. Obviously you're not a very good one. 2 Questions: 1. Do Agilit know how desperate and objectively cringeworthy you come across? 2. How many other UA-cam video's do you post comments on that are equally as uncomfortable as this one.
For some types of chairs, replacing the foam may be a little difficult if it has contours. But it would be done similarly to in this tutorial on how to reupholster a dining chair: www.onlinefabricstore.net/makersmill/how-to-reupholster-dining-chairs/ It's easy to cut curves in the foam with a serrated knife and you can also round the edges with scissors if needed. We suggest high density upholstery foam: www.onlinefabricstore.net/product-group-foam-and-padding.aspx?product=foam&product_sub_group=upholstery-foam
Is it the Eames lounge chair? Looks like it could be complicated and more than a DIY job. We'd suggest a professional upholsterer, but if you want to try yourself, pay close attention to how it's put together while you deconstruct it (take photos!), then use the old pieces of vinyl as templates to cut new fabric. Reverse the steps to put it back together as close as you can to the original. Before reupholstering, you could try cleaning it with a vinyl cleaner like this: www.onlinefabricstore.net/3m-marine-vinyl-cleaner-and-restorer-16-9-oz-.htm And if that doesn't work, another option is using a vinyl spray paint: www.onlinefabricstore.net/product-group-paint.aspx?product=spray-paint&product_sub_group=fabric-and-vinyl-spray-paint Good luck!
Christine Bagshaw that’s true because I’m working with a new foam and it isn’t fitted for the way the chair is back piece I’d curved and oddly shaped. To get right to it, I’ve reupholstered many things and this has me frustrated. I am doing it for a friend for 20 bucks. I wouldn’t care and it would be a piece of cake. However the foam she dropped off is an inch thick and unfitting for this and it is good that top has a back piece to cover the the bunching that’s happening but this is bunching and bulgy all around the edge of the bottom and I am wondering if anyone has had this issue and knows a good fix?

Thanks for your video it's amazing 💜
Could you tell me materials you use to spray the chair
Great video. Thanks!
Glad you liked it!
Great video. How much fabric do we need?
Great thanks ! I hope it works with plastic
What also needs replacing is the seat cushion, underneath the fabric, because it no longer cushions the seat after it becomes crushed.
Nice! Wanted to re-cover my office chair but wasn't sure how to take it apart as I couldn't see nay screws, thanks for the tip :)

The problem with old chairs is that they accumulate a lot of germs dust and dirt in the original stuffing so it would be useful on how to do that...

My back rest panel won't come off n there are no screws.
Chairs are constructed in many different ways, so sorry we can't help with your specific chair!
What if the back has fabric on it? Would it still pop off?
Hi Ashley, unfortunately this will not work with all types of office chairs like the kind that have fabric on the back instead of the plastic.
If the chair needs new upholstery, then it should also need new cushion material (foam).
Ummm yeah I’m gonna need you to go ahead and come in on Sunday... mmmm yeah
Did you get that memo about the TPS reports?

Yes, that would work!
