my mom was a seamstress & milliner. When she taught me to sew she insisted that the inside be as beautiful as the outside. This was a pleasure to watch.
I added "rope binding" to a twin bed mattress cover using solarium fabric using my commercial juki sewing machine. I used took apart old cover and used it as a pattern exactly. I noticed the fabric puckered a little as I was going along applying the cording but didn't think any thing of it and when I was attaching the sides now, Im about six inches shorter at the end on the main piece. what caused this?
This is a blast from the past. Growing up my father had a furniture shop. He made bedroom sets and living room/den sets. From start to finish, he did everything. My oldest sister was given a bedroom set and a living room set when she moved out. (She is much older than I am.) She had both sets, for 30 years. The bedroom set still looked brand new. And there was not even a loose thread on the living room set and yes, the fabric was very outdated!!! Products that are made with quality in mind, truly does last. Thank you for the video. I never had any clue on how he sewed the cushions.
Truly, your sister has a treasure, and evidently she knows it because she took care of it, and treasured it!❤ as far as the outdated, upholstery fabric. That’s all right it takes her outdated lol vintage is also outdated.😊 she’s smart for not changing a thing on her furniture. And God bless your heart. Evidently you like me you got left behind and without.😢 i’m sorry. But maybe you could learn how to do. Upholstery pick up some old pieces and start your own collection of antique furniture.♥️ Good luck, dear. Have fun.😃❤️❤️❤️
I wish I found this before I finished a set of boxed pillow cases. Most of my corners are puckered together or pinched. The way you explained how to sew around corners was soooo good! I’ll be doing that in future.
Having been in the industry for 30 years even I found this to be interesting how different upholstery people do the same operations differently. Well done!
I’ve been struggling to find a tutorial to re-cover camper van cushions for months … after many failed attempts and trying to make things fit I stumbled upon this little gem !!!!! Very well explained.. measuring was precise and at the end there is that little bit of wiggle for adjustments… Absolutely fantastic… I’m no seamstress but this was a joy to sew along too … Thank You 🙏 😊
Thank you so much for this. You are a very good teacher! Thank you for showing us how this is done in the most clear way possible. Thank you for not trying to be cute and entertaining and have the focus on yourself. Though in not doing that, you come across as likable. 🙂
Its very satisfying to watch an expert work and create something both beautiful and useful. You explain things perfectly also. Thanks for sharing with us!
So glad I found your tutorial! I decided to reupholster the sofa in our motor home. This tutorial is excellent to boost my confidence that I can accomplish my project. Thank you for all the tips & tricks. Excellent video taping, could see all that you were doing.
I’m so happy to have found this channel. You taught a chair reupholstering class on Craftsy. It’s so satisfying to see skillful and beautiful work. This is just what I needed for my family room chair. Thanks!
I was very interested in this video. You are clearly very good at this, and it makes me want to upgrade things in my house. You are an excellent teacher. Thank you for the time you took to do this. I am now subscribed.
Great video! I've just sewn my 1st ever box cushion cover. I'm recovering my old cushions for my narrowboat dinette. Was very apprehensive about how to tackle this task. And found that your video explains it very well and after watching and breaking it down into steps managed my 1st one. I have a hobby sewing machine and managed to sew it all even with a quite thick upholstery fabric
I am so thankful that I found your channel. I’m very interested in reupholstering a chair that I have, with your expertise and help. I’ll believe I can do it.!😊 I appreciate your channel so much and your generosity. Thank you♥️ keep them coming I have to subscribe.🤗
Best tutorial, so easily explained, clean cut and calming to watch ❤ I’m soon starting a sewing job at a warehouse for patio furniture and I know how to sew cushions but I’m so nervous and excited that I’m just looking up everything anyways to make sure I don’t miss anything 😅😂 your video definitely helped me feel better at ease🙏🏼thank you
As a sailmaker, I get the occasional seat cover which isn’t my particular area of expertise. Now after watching your video, I’m more confident to do them 😊. Thanks for taking the time out to make it.
My mom was an incredible seamstress not professionally but she could make clothes all the way to upholstering furniture. My parents are from Mexico so sewing was a necessity. I have pictures of them wearing pants and dresses made from the fabric they would buy bulk goods. I have pic of my mom in a dress made from sack she said the flour they bought came in. 😮She mainly did drapery for the home and cushion/pillow covers. When I was a teen I wanted to learn to make snowboarding pants that were cool and would fit bigger guys like myself as most snow gear at the time ( early 90’s) always seemed to be made for super skinny dudes. She never taught me but I also never pushed it but I wish I had. She told me that making clothing anymore wasn’t worth the effort because clothes were so cheap now 😂 I still find myself wanting to learn but she’s right about the clothes/gear. I grew up in a self employed family making silver tack and western jewelry. Sad truth is people want to buy American made but don’t want to pay for American made time and material. My father’s business disappeared after 40 years.
Thank you.I always enjoy watching your videos. Straight forward, no nonsense information delivered in a succinct manner 😊. I’m not a beginner but I always find something to add to my arsenal of skills. Brilliant!
Wow! Exceptional tutorial! Thank you! It makes you appreciate the talented craftsmanship of the people who know what they’re doing & do it well!! Thank you!!!
Great video. I live near the White Cliffs of Dover in the UK. Just bought my first walking foot machine ( Jack H2) with servo control. It makes sewing box cushions a piece of cake.
Making my first box cushions and need to add tabs to hang from pole to make a headboard. Loved your video and straight forward teaching method, but I clear and concise. Thank you x
Excellent video! Probably the best one I’ve ever seen on how to do box cushions! Going to investigate the rest of your videos! I’ve been sewing for 60 years, and I always love learning new things! Or refining the techniques that I already know! Thank you!❤
Hello to you, I want to say a big thank you for sharing your professionalism with the whole world, you are an excellent teacher of great generosity. Cordially, From Québec Claude
Thank you! This was amazingly helpful for us beginners! I wish I had found you at the start of my patio furniture project. The pain I could have saved myself, if I had you guidance at the beginning. New appreciative fan, Susan.
I bought a n industrial sewing machine to do some upholstery on my boat and classic trucks. Watching a professional at their craft is very satisfying.. hope some of your expertise rubs off on me! :D Great work!
I am replacing the cushion covers on my patio set for the first time and was looking for a visual demonstration to help me figure it out. Your video is one of the very best tutorials I have seen with clear instructions and fantastic camera angles. With your help I was able to see where I went wrong with my first attempt and have now successfully made my first cushion cover. Only 11 more to go. Thankyou!
This was the best video on how to make a box cushion. I watched several, yours was the best. I did each step and stopped it then did the step it worked great. Thank you so much!
This is such a well-organized and executed video that I actually have confidence that I can figure this out as a hobby sewer. Thank you for creating this video.
BEST instructions specifically for the way the boxing is attached. I've torn my hair out (and many seams) following other videos that showed sewing the boxing in one continuous piece before sewing to front and back panels. The solution here is brilliant!
WOW! This was a great video! I have recovered a few pieces of furniture, but I watched because I love some tips and tricks. Not to mention, I want your machine, lol, I just recovered a 50s round ottoman in fake alligator, it had 4 rings of welting. I have a welting foot, but for upholstery I use a Singer 201... it for sure doesn't have that fancy walking foot!
Really Liked your video! Learned a lot and laughed with a smile whren you had the race car sound effects durring the fast video. Looking forward to watching and learning with The Workroom Channel!!!!
Thanks for taking the time to make this video, I need to re-upolster our chairs... most of the upholstery shops have closed up around our area. So its time I picked up a new skill.
Wow! This video popped up on my UA-cam feed and it is exactly what I need to do to a cushion for my husband. I just finished cutting the dense foam piece with my handheld electric meat/bread slicer. Works great for fish too. The zipper application is exactly what I needed to see. His old cushion and zipper were destroyed (parts missing) and was hard to determine exactly what it was so I started from scratch. All I need now is to go grab some ‘silk film’ the shop vac and get this done! Thank you!!!
Thank you so much for this video. Sometimes my boxed cushions become askew when I sew on the back. Notches!!! Genius!! Thank you. This video saved me from pulling out any more hair.
Pleasant surprised whenever the store recommended store is in the video is from where you are currently watching the UA-cam video. I will go to Fabric supply today
Brilliant! This was fascinating to watch. Thank you. I've been wanting to recover a chaise lounge for years...this has me thinking about it again. EXCELLENT instruction!
I'm more of an easy to sew kind of person. However, I taught myself how to do cushions 13 years ago. Sure wish I would have had this. I think I'll have to do some more cushions. Thank you.
I really loved watching this whole video, you had total control of every inch of it, and its great to see. Thanks so much, I dont think I would try it myself, but I have made piped cushions for my sofa, so I guess its similar but more intricate to do these cushions. I will watch more of your videos for sure !!
What a fantastic video! Thank you so much for sharing this. I am about to attempt to recover some pieces of antique furniture I got second hand for little and nothing due to the shape it was in. It was exactly the style I wanted though and to buy it already reupholstered would have cost about 30k. I really appreciated how you addressed the thickness of the fabric with all those layers. I honestly was going to give up but when you said I could likely get away with using my home sewing machine with a thinner fabric I was so relieved to hear that. I am going to be using silk dupioni to re-cover the pieces as it will not get much use and is mostly decorative and that fabric is fairly thin. I am so excited to get my project underway now. Your clear instructions and all the information you shared has made me quite confident.
Thank you for such great instructions Cynthia. I need to check whether my standard sewing machine is man enough for all those layers! Best wishes from south coast of England.
Hi there! I’m working on my first wood working/upholstery project, which has been quite the undertaking and learning expirence. I am making a cushion for the first time using foam and I’d really love for the cushion to fit tightly. The foam is 64.5”x24”x4”. While your video is great! I’m having a really hard time understanding if I make my original measurements slightly smaller for the tight fit… for example you use 3.25 inches on your boring to compress the 4 inch foam. Should I also take in my length and width? Would love advice from anyone! 😅 thank you so much!
Hi! Cynthia the instructor is my mentor here in Minneapolis. Generally speaking, you’ll want to oversize your foam for the finished size of your cushion. Determine the finished size of your cushion first, as those dimensions are the most important. Then, cut your foam a bit larger than your finished dimensions. In the video, she has a finished 3.25” boxing, and a 4” foam, so she oversized her foam by a total of .75”. Doing the same for your length and width will result in a nicely full cushion.

Nice video and helpful navigation but disappointed that it didn't show how to do the zipper panel - that's the trickiest bit!!😅
@@claremcinerney3209 I agree
The people at Bassett could learn a thing or two about that😉
Lovely clear photography. No waffle. Straight into it. Just what I love when I want instructions. Thanks!
Agreed!
Thank you for being so clear.
