Wow, that add9 + m add9 turnaround sounds amazing!
I agree! It's a popular one for guitar players.
A great study of Add 9 chords being used is by Andy Summers guitarist who played in the band the Police. In the song message in the bottle he played it as only 3 notes the root 5th and 9th. But he is basically highlighting an add 9 chord and staying out of the way of the vocal melody by leaving the third out (also making it much easier to play). Then in the song every breath you take the entire song other than the chorus is entirely major add 9 and minor add 9 chords.
Great info, thanks for sharing!
I found out an add9 in a chord progression yesterday and couldn’t stop playing it again and again and had to look up about its characters. Why haven’t I found out about this channel sooner, informative, concise and visually simple but pleasing. Now I have playlist of Music theory to binge, thank you, teach.
Thanks for the comment, I'm glad you've found the channel!
Yeah add9 is used a lot, particularly by guitar players.
@@WriteASong Add 9 is very similar to second interval is it?
@@tieukhavu8832 Yes it is
@@WriteASong Aha ok. Coincidence
The last chord progression, soundedd like the song that goes "relax... take it easy", i had almost forgotten that song
สอนดีมากครับ ทั้งทฤษดี ตั้งตัวอย่าง ง่ายต่อความเข้าใจ แม้จะไม่มพื้นฐานมากนัก 👍❤️

Really liked this channel, information straight to the point! Thank you so much for all the content.
Thanks for the kind comment, I'm glad you are enjoying the channel!
I always loved the music of Maurice Ravel, but couldn't find out the reason why. Now I know for sure, I was attracted to Ravel's usage of minor 9th chords!
Minor 9th chords are heartwarming and both mystical!
Yes they are great chords!
Very clear and concise. Exceptional
Thank you kindly!
Your videos are always great!
Thank you Joy!
Beautiful lesson. Thank you!
You're welcome!

I agree!
I'm so grateful to have discovered this channel, and even more for the fact that it's free, thank you so much! Could you make a video on key changes (from parallel and relative keys with maybe some tricks). Have a nice day and keep going!
Thanks for the kind words!
Yes, I will be making some key change videos soon, I expect it will be a couple of months before they start to appear on the channel.
@@WriteASong awesome! I'll wait💪🏻
You used D as the last note for Cadd9 because you’re in the C scale. What if the C chord is in another scale, does the 9th note change then?
Cadd9 will always have D as it's 9th note. It doesn't matter what key you use the chord in.
it's the chord that makes you sound like Deftones
Might be a stupid question, but I am new to music theory, so not too sure. There is a certain chord I've learned to play on guitar, which I've been told is "basically an add 9 chord."
As an example, it's played on the fifth fret of the low E, the seventh fret of the A string, and the ninth fret of the D string, giving me the notes A, E, and B. It is movable of course, but A's just the example I have.
There is no third played in that particular chord, which I know would be C# for major and C natural for minor. Does this mean that this power chord is an add 9 chord and that I can pretty much use it over either?
It's most likely obvious, but I don't get it. Great channel by the way.
What you are describing is an Asus2 chord. sus2 is basically an add9 chord without 3rd/b3rd so they aren't major or minor. We have a video on them here: ua-cam.com/video/ufKb_brYFb4/v-deo.html
Hope that helps you a little.
Came here because the new omnichord has a sus4 and add9 😭
I can't understand the point discussed at 3:48 that add9mchords will feature any chord in a major key except for chord 3. Please explain it
Btw, it was a great video
There are 7 chords in major keys. They are labelled with roman numerals - I to VII. You can make any of the chords into an add 9 chord. But if you make the iii chord into an add 9 then it introduces a note from outside of the scale that they key is built upon. This isn't always desirable in songwriting.
@@WriteASong I got this a bit. So the 7th chord which would be a diminished one, can it's add9 also be played? I mean do diminished triads can also become diminished add9 chords by adding the 9th note of that diminished scale?
Diminished add9 chords do exist yes. In a major key the VII chord when played as an add 9 would also introduce a note from outside of the scale. You might therefore see this as a diminished add flat 9 chord. I didn't discuss this in the video, but I might cover it in the future.
@@WriteASong Ok thank you so much
I need help. Could you do a video on 6 chords? I love how they sound but I have really no idea how to use them
I will hopefully do one in the future, but I have a few more videos to do before then.
@@WriteASong sweet. i love your content btw, these videos are so informative!
@@Jofismusic Thanks!
Does this apply to the guitar 🎸
It can apply to any instrument or software you like.
add 9 chors good for funk.
For something with "pad" in its name, Hookpad doesn't work too well with an iPad. 8-(
I'm sorry to hear that Christopher.
im so lost..
What do you need help with?
@@WriteASong first things first, it's with my mental health & well-being 😕
I'm sorry to hear that. I hope that you are able to find some support.
I don't know if you like songwriting, playing an instrument or listening to music but some people find it helps them to express themselves and feel better.
