Wasn't the era of black wall street also the era of Jim Crow and segregation. I am not trying to denigrate the black success story (it is to be totally admired). However, the point I am making is that America couldn't possibly have been great under Jim Crow with all that lynching of black people going on. AMERICA HAS NEVER BEEN GREAT. This is just a myth. "Make America great again" means "make America white again". It is racist white code for "lets go back to the good old days of slavery, Jim Crow and segregation".
When congress declared war not executive orders, when lobbyists didnt buy every politician, when americans died in war not from illegal drugs, when america had borders, when cartels didnt control our borders, when politicians cared for americans not special interest groups, when the media told the truth when the american family existed and outnumbered dysfunctional families etc etc
That question will be answered differently depending on who you ask, America has NEVER been great for ALL of it's citizens at any time in history. In fact it has not only never been great for all citizens, it's been a downright nightmare for people of color and even poor whites, and not much has changed throughout the decades.
It's funny how people can't say when it was great. When you have so much inequality you can't lump us all under one umbrella and call it great. It's a work in progress is what it is.
That's a question with a very subjective answer. Personally, things were better when I was very young (too young to know what was really going on). My dad, a black WWII vet who married his childhood sweetheart. I was raised in a neighborhood built for black veterans. Our schools & teachers were the best, they really cared about us and made us proud of who we were. Since we were up north we were not subjected to the blatant Jim Crowe (which I had no idea even existed at the time) and everyone was working. Neighbors were all - teachers, police, factory, nurses, oil & gas, steel mill, ship yard, Scott Paper ... etc. We children were temporarily shielded from what our parents knew (for a while life was good - with the exception of the black and white TV images that told us we did not exist unless we were singing and dancing, Buckwheat, maids, and steppin and fetchin with Shirley Temple). And THEN came the black & white images of the lunch counter murders and dogs and fire hoses and church bombings - 3 little girls died on my eighth birthday. There were occasional heroes who made their way to the top, there were those who lost their way, there were some who took a stand and paid a price. Once I saw that hatred, I have never felt the same way about America since. The problem is people who don't love themselves. It takes a lot of energy to be that hateful, it's a cancer that will eat you from the inside out. It often goes underground until someone gives it a whistle but it's ALWAYS been there. God don't like ugly and America is full of it - GOD is coming.
Truer words could never been spoken. I forgot how long ago was that or when that happened. Possibly when we were not focusing on wars, diseases, politics, income, but overall it depends on which group of people gets affected.
The elder gay man gave one of the best answers. In the economic context, the 50s were a great time: one person working, a stay at home mom, and 2-3 kids, all under a single salary, in a decent house with a car. In the social context, for him, today is a better time: he can get married and live his life to the fullest without hiding it. If he’s a Trump supporter, I’d let it slide. At least he has shown to have given serious consideration as opposed to blindly following someone.
Except for segregation when you can only use certain bathrooms and even today when we are figuring out which bathroom to use for those in the LGBTQ and whatever they are adding to thier thing now.
@@einsteinboricua for a white person yes, but for a person of color its the opposite. It was a worse time to be black in the 50s because anything they built in an economic context was just burnt down and destroyed or made out of reach by white man who don't want the black man have anything. Both black parents had to work in jobs that barely make ends meet in positions nobody wants with no means of a promotion.
The idealistic greatness comes from the heart not the mind. The right now mindset has spoiled us. MORE has overwhelmed us. Bigger and Better has weighted us down. As time is running out your willing to trade it all for less. Want for nothing. Freedom
There is no wrong or right answer. One gentleman touched on it in the video...He said it depends on what issues you are speaking about. But If I had to answer,I would say it was NEVER GREAT because of the effect of SLAVERY...which continues today through SYSTEMIC RACISM, which many people ignorantly feel does not exsist. In order for any BODY to be great there can be no PAIN OR DISEASE OR DISORDER anywhere in the body...RACISM, CORPORATE GREED are just some of the illnesses that have plagued this nation for decades, thus preventing it from becoming great, with seemingly no cure in the horizon.
I'm a black man. My grandfather was born in 1913. He raised a nuclear family and purchased a house. Those two accomplishments seem to be hard to come by today. I would say that there was *_greatness_* in that 🤔
That is a great question, in my mother’s days were never great for people of color. Y’all know that. Though the southern whites thought it was a wonderful time for everybody they tried to tell themselves we were happy living in conditions less than, many thought that, except the people of color. Many got mad when Michelle made her statement about America, but it was true, we, my mothers children are actually the first generation in her family that actually lived free with liberties, voting rights and education going where we want, living where we want, yes we are the first “free” generation those of us born after the 50s.
The question itself is sophomoric and divisive. Now everyone can fight about the answer. There are so many things that can contribute to a country being great...one answer is not possible. One thing I do know is TAKING AWAY PEOPLES' RIGHTS IS NOT GREAT, ENDING THE CONSTITUTION IS NOT GREAT, GIVING MORE POWER TO ONE PERSON IS NOT GREAT, DEMANDING LOYALTY TO ONE PERSON IS NOT GREAT, HAVING A DICTATOR IS NOT GREAT, ALIGNING THE GOVERNMENT WITH ANY RELIGION IS NOT GREAT, HAVING A CONVICTED FELON RUNNING FOR PRESIDENT IS NOT GREAT, REMOVING THE FAIRNESS DOCTRINE(REAGAN) WAS NOT GREAT, SO MANY THINGS TO ADD TO THE LIST...SO LITTLE TIME AND SPACE.
That statement was not meant to be literal that is codeword for segregated racist and divided so we move the word great and say let’s make America segregated again let’s make America racist again let’s make America divided a game that’s all that means don’t be fooled
In the 40's when we mobilized to help free the world from dictators. The last time was in the 70 - 90's..When people had the opportunity to work at skilled well paying jobs and support a family on one income..When mothers raise our children. Then our politicians started making deals sending those jobs overseas to help developing countries improve their standard of living while wrecking ours.
I mean, I guess the baby boom was pretty great economically, but civil rights should be more important and those...Americans have LOST some of those since 2016, haven't they? Or at least an attempt was made on them.
America is wickedly great. America rose to great power and prominence through the inner working of pure wickedness. It's not the greatest country in the world but its the greatest country in the world.
So, Donald Trump is peddling a fiction. It’s relative to how people feel about themselves today. There never was a great period in history for everyone.
Remember, you need to distinguish between the country or the continent. North America is a continent that includes Canada & Mexico. I amend my first answer.
these people who don't think this country is great have never been outside this country to see the difference between us and the other countries in the world, once the go to another country and see for themselves , they will realize how great this country really is
@ Notice I did not say the most perfect country on earth, but despite its flaws is still the best country on earth. Yes there is a lot of work to do to make it better, but considering the alternative, still the best. Now consider the alternative to President Trump, and I cringe at the thought, we would continue the downward slide the abomination had us on with her in there,. No one is perfect as we are all humans but some are a much better choice than others. In this case, we made the right choice.
Tom Lewellen Hey Tom, I think you know very well what it means! Not at all attempting to be disrespectful, but I don’t sugarcoat what I convey! I think individuals who thought this inept, lowlife, bottom dwelling piece of dung was a better candidate to gain the WH were either on some mind altering drug or they are just as dumb as he is! With all the negativity he had previous to his announcement to run and now with all he’s done that’s been contrary to the oath he took, it’s a fair and true statement that those who supported him then and those who still do so are bottom dwelling pieces of dung!! Any attempt at a rebuttal to what I’ve posted would be nothing more than a futile attempt at defending the indefensible!!
I'VE lived outside of the US and you don't know what you're talking about. There is great stupidity and divisiveness in the very question "when was America great". It basically asks people to decide when it was great for them. Includes nothing about the various aspects of any country that could make it great or not great. Americans are too obsessed with BEING THE BEST AT EVERYTHING....EVEN WHEN WE ARE NOT. " AMERICAN EXCEPTIONALISM" by Reagan is MYTHOLOGY that appeals to EGO.

America has never been great! Greatness to me would be defined by how you treat those who reside in that place and also how as a country you show compassion to your neighbor countries and allies! Some have been afforded centuries of being treated well while others have been treated horribly! America has failed miserably in that category! How about this slogan, Let’s make America great for once and then attempt to keep it where all are treated the same across the board! When Black People had " BLACK WALLSTREET. "
Amen!...However, Black people seem to consistently make the mistake of NOT REBUILDING when White Supremacy destroys their lot.
We tend to 'Give up' in defeat.
We must have the mentality to rebuild...even if they keep destroying it, we keep rebuilding...They will soon stop destroying.
After Tulsa, we raised the white flag and started supporting their businesses..."NEVER AGAIN!!!

Don't forget Rosewood,Durham, Ashville,etc.
There were plenty of "black" towns that were overrun by armed gangs of racist hellbent on kicking Negroes out of their communities.Naturally, the "law" did nothing to stop the land takeovers.
No doubt!...it's a travesty that customers overlooked by the masses...and must me exposed constantly as a reminder
@@davidmilton5887 are u fucking serious
Before 1492!.
America was great until the first people came across the Bering Strait thousands of years ago.
The most eloquently spoken was a Canadian 😂😂
@1:27 this statement scares me. She’s saying when the media didn’t reveal to her how fucked up of a society we lived in, is when it was great.
Truer words could never been spoken. I forgot how long ago was that or when that happened. Possibly when we were not focusing on wars, diseases, politics, income, but overall it depends on which group of people gets affected.
Any country that needs to continually convince itself that it is great, is not great at all..
I agreed with last dude
THE BEGINNING WHERE IS THAT FROM I CANT REMEMBER
Did that black guy say america was great in the 1800s
Pam Kelly!!!!! You right!!!!
@@vectorphoenix5992 Read the entire comment again...SLOWLY
America was never great and will never be great👋🏽
It would be great if your as was RICH 🤠

I'm a black man. My grandfather was born in 1913. He raised a nuclear family and purchased a house. Those two accomplishments seem to be hard to come by today. I would say that there was *_greatness_* in that 🤔
When the Native Americans were in charge!
@Adolph Bidenkopt shut the fuck up
That is a great question, in my mother’s days were never great for people of color.
As a person who has been to a lot of different countries you can't beat this one.If you are unhappy leave there are people waiting to take your place
THE JOB OF A TRUE AMERICAN IS TO MAKE THE US BETTER...FOR EVERYONE....NOT JUST LOOK OUT FOR YOURSELF , NOT JUST TURN AND RUN.
The question itself is sophomoric and divisive. Now everyone can fight about the answer. There are so many things that can contribute to a country being great...one answer is not possible. One thing I do know is TAKING AWAY PEOPLES' RIGHTS IS NOT GREAT, ENDING THE CONSTITUTION IS NOT GREAT, GIVING MORE POWER TO ONE PERSON IS NOT GREAT, DEMANDING LOYALTY TO ONE PERSON IS NOT GREAT, HAVING A DICTATOR IS NOT GREAT, ALIGNING THE GOVERNMENT WITH ANY RELIGION IS NOT GREAT, HAVING A CONVICTED FELON RUNNING FOR PRESIDENT IS NOT GREAT, REMOVING THE FAIRNESS DOCTRINE(REAGAN) WAS NOT GREAT,
SO MANY THINGS TO ADD TO THE LIST...SO LITTLE TIME AND SPACE.
That statement was not meant to be literal that is codeword for segregated racist and divided so we move the word great and say let’s make America segregated again let’s make America racist again let’s make America divided a game that’s all that means don’t be fooled
America is already great🎉
Trump supporters would say the 1950s.

I disagree with Michelle Obama. I no longer think this is the greatest country in the world
I see it as the U.S. is great, not perfect. Better then it was the years before, yet has much more to improve.
Good question.
There was those months after the Berlin wall fell and right before the Gulf War started were great.... Yeah ... Those months in between......
AND BLACK SOLDIERS CAME HOME FROM WAR AND STILL WERE NOT ALLOWED TO HAVE ALL THE RIGHTS AND FREEDOMS GIVEN TO WHITE AMERICANS. THAT WAS GREAT?
I mean, I guess the baby boom was pretty great economically, but civil rights should be more important and those...Americans have LOST some of those since 2016, haven't they? Or at least an attempt was made on them.
America is spoiled.
America is wickedly great. America rose to great power and prominence through the inner working of pure wickedness. It's not the greatest country in the world but its the greatest country in the world.

these people who don't think this country is great have never been outside this country to see the difference between us and the other countries in the world, once the go to another country and see for themselves , they will realize how great this country really is
@ well Byron, consider the alternative we were faced with.
@ what ever that means

Immigrants back in the 15 16 17 and 18 hundreds,,,,,,, my history book said white settlers
No privileges afforded to any one ethnicity because of their ethnicity! My opinion on this particular matter. I’m sure the Simpletons will find fault in MY OPINION! So What!!

The lady who said America was great when she was a kid and didn't follow the news was the most insightful. The more we know the better we appreciate what is great but also what falls short of our aspirations for America. As a political issue, any politician who is not trying to make America better than it is today does not deserve anybody's vote.
GUESS that depends on one's definition of "great". the whole question was stupid and divisive.
