From what I understand, it was Lloyd Grant who didn't want to be a part of Metallica, he just did a guest track on a song for a compilation because Llars was his friend and he wanted to be on the compilation, but he didn't want to be part of the band, he was already in a different band, and their plans would have made it hard for him to keep his job, and he went on to become a chemist.
The world would be a different place if he had chosen Metallica, or if Defcon would have accepted the deal with RoadRunner. ua-cam.com/video/BY-Vci-iZPo/v-deo.html
Sevendust and Killswitch Engage both have black lead singers. Alice In Chains now has one too and he is great. (he helped keep the band alive after the death of Layne) Jimi Hendrix also is considered a founder of metal and I've a portrait of him on my wall. He is a black man. Music knows NO RACE.
Cool fact my brother! I didn't know that! Similarly, I've heard stories about dubstep being created by Rastafarian brothers from the UK. Many probably assume Skrillex had the greatest impact on the genre, but just think of the name, "dub"-step. Plus, many may not know this, but drum and bass (dubstep's predecessor) was also created and pioneered by brothers and sisters from the UK. If you are further interested, look up artists like Goldie, Ragga Twins, and 4Hero!
You are actually correct about Dubstep. Lets say even if white people created Dubstep, it still wouldn't matter because Dubstep comes from the black Raggae sub-genre, Dub.
He literally didn't want to join. So he didn't. So he was never a part of Metallica. How hard is that to understand. Everybody agrees this, there is no conspiracy.
That generation wasn't accepting black people in thrash or heavy metal, I Know personally after spending years at this same time trying. I was told I should play bass... Stereotyping
@@piggyeternal5724 Wow! So because some random band found some LOCAL success that means racism wasn’t a thing in the 80s I guess. Truly only a white person could concoct something this dumb and ignorant
From what I have read, in multiple sources, the main knock on Lloyd Grant was that, while he was clearly an excellent lead player, he wasn't very good at playing the precise tight, rhythm chops which were so crucial to Metallica's sound. Like, for example, a song like "Am I Evil" (which they played often at their early gigs)- those licks would have been hard for him, even though he would have nailed the opening solo. Which was why Lars and James didn't really pursue him to join the band full time.
So what happened was when they (Lar, James, Dave, and Ron Mcgoverny) recorded Hit The Lights for the compilation album it was on a multi track device (either a 4 or 5 track) which had drums on track 1 , bass on track 2 Dave’s Guitar on track 3 and James vocals on Track 4 ….. i do not know if James was playing rhythm guitar or not but if so that would be on track 5 ……. I pretty sure there was no track five and thus only ONE guitar on the original …. ANYWAY they felt the song felt flat so thats when Lars asked his buddy Lloyd to add some guitar rifts on Track 4 at any point where Jason is not singing….. Btw i am pulling this out of a very dim memory of an article from around 92-93 so it may be that the bass track was Cliff Burtons and not Ron’s …. That being said Llyod grants guitar time with Metallica is about on par with their guitar Tech’s John Marshall’s time filling on for James back when J broke his arm skateboarding on tour supporting the Master of Puppets Album …..
No it happened before Dave joined. It was a 4 track recorder. James recorded the bass, rhythm guitar and vocals and Lars recorded drums. They then got Lloyd to record the solo on the vocal track
He was in the sense that he made music with them. That is important. I consider Ron McGovney, Lloyd Grant, Dave Mustaine, John Marshall and Bob Rock all to be part of MetallicA. The band does too and they thanked them when getting inducted. (We want to thank all members of MetallicA past and present).

Whats is he doing now?

That's bad ass. *Story: 2 thumbs up*

that's bizarre, I'm 'white' and I don't care what color the band members are. This Lloyd Grant fella is amazing!!
The guy from Hirax, Hirax were huge in the underground thrash scene and friends with all those bands like Metallica
