  • I grew up hearing the famous 60`s Ludwig Drum Sound. Rock drummers like Ringo Starr, Ginger Baker, John Bonham, Mitch Mitchell, Carmine Appice, and Jazz drummers like Joe Morello, Jo Jones, Ed Thigpen, and Roy Haynes. This is my Ludwig Classic 1969 drum set in the wonderful Champagne Sparkle pearl finish. I`m playing on the 14x22 inch bass drum, 9x13 tom,16x16 floor tom, and the famous 5x14 chrome Supra-Phonic 400 snare drum. All shells are 3 ply with the rock maple re-enforcing rings. All drums are tuned wide open for that clear full open tone. Drummers like John Bonham of course loved this type of tuning on his classic Ludwig drums. In this drum solo workout, you can hear the full open natural tone of each drum. These 60`s Ludwig drums have a sound of it`s own which fits my style of playing so well. The great jazz drummer Joe Morello played his classic 60`s Ludwig drums for Dave Brubeck using this same wide open tuning. I also have all the original 60`s Ludwig hardware in this video. Simple light weight hardware that works so well. Bill Ludwig Jr. said in his book that these were the best Ludwig drums ever made in the 60`s with the 3ply shells.

    that bass drum sounds phenomenal

      It`s the old school way of tuning the bass drum with felt strips and not the Power Stroke 3 heads which makes the bass drum sound dead. You hear a real note, not a thud sound. Thanks for your comment.

    Howdy Sir- incredible solo! I had a set of Ludwig’s from somewhere in the seventies that I gave my daughter. But the Slingerlands stay with me lol. Hope you are having a great weekend. God bless

      You as the drummer knows what drum set you like best. Ludwig made excellent drums in the 60`s and I enjoy playing them. For my Big Band, I still like the Slingerland drums better. Thanks for your comment.

    I owned and played the same 60’s kit in the 70’s for several years but sadly didn’t keep it.
    Mine was in blue oyster pearl but I always wanted a mahogany finish kit so I wrapped in coloured vinyl and it looked great to me.
    I also drew a logo on the front head which you couldn’t distinguish from a factory applied one.
    Shouldn’t have sold it.
    But I now have a Yamaha Absolute Hybrid Maple which is really nice instead.
    🤘😁🥁👍

      At least you got to play a 60`s Ludwig drum set at one time. You must be a very good artist to paint your own logo on the front Ludwig bass drum head. Do you play drums in your own band? What kind of music do you play? All my best to you with your drumming.

      Those Ludwig snare drums you had were called Supralite with the steel shell and tube lugs. They still make them today. The best Ludwig snare drum for me are the Supra-Phonic 400 that I`m playing in this video.I love my 1969 model I`m playing along with these great Ludwig classic drums. One of the best drums Ludwig ever made were these classic drum sets.

      I’m 72 and my 2nd set was 66 Ludwig which I kept to this day. The only thing I changed was I used a a Rogers’s Dynasonic snare! The sounds were awesome. I was requested for recording sessions because of the magnificent tones! Keep drumming!!!🎶🥁🎶

      @@KenLoomer Whats the best way to avoid cracks on vintage cymbals?

    • @KenLoomer
      @KenLoomer  11 днів тому +2

      @@jasonpp1973 Of course you know the answer to that question. Do not hit them with all your might. A cymbal can only be heard at a certain volume. Hitting them harder will not make them louder. I have never cracked a cymbal in my life. These late 60`s I have in this video are over 50 years old. Since I`m not in a rock metal band hitting my cymbals full force, I know my cymbals will last a lifetime.
