- Ludwig Classic Maple unboxing and sound sample: So I got home Friday and had a package from Sweetwater waiting for me, a brand spanking new Ludwig Classic Maple in Black Oyster Pearl. I was blown away with how incredible this drum set sounded right out of the box. I didn't have to really mess with it at all. I then proceeded to put it through its paces from low to high tuning. The tuning range on these drums is huuuuuuuge! I didn't know it was possible for a 12 inch tom to sound so fat at a low tuning. Drums sizes are as follows 14X22 kick 8X12 Rack 14X14 Floor 16X16 Floor 6.5X14 Ludwig Supraphonic snare

God, They sound incredible in all tunings.There really isn't anything like a classic maple kit.

I tell you what Jeff, those Ludwigs sound terrific straight out of the box. I’m partial to the low tuning myself but the mid range sounds good as well.

Great choice with the classics, they will treat you very well. I've had mine since 1990 and have never had a issue with them. I also love the color of them, they sound awesome on the low tuning.

You get a great sound out of that kit man. Phenomenal. I’m actually a Birch fan so I was wary about the “attack” capabilities of the classic maple, but man these things can bite!
Your kit "Straight out of the box" sounded magnificent. Your "Low Tuning" and "High Tuning" ranges sounded equally as beautiful as "Straight out of the box." That Bass Drum is as phat as it can be as it should be. Phat like a muh! I've decided what my next drum kit is going to be, thanks to you, sir and Ludwig.

The factory tuning of the fourth and fifth-ish between the 16, 14, and 12 toms is terrific. With the snare and bass it's amazing how good it sounds from the factory. Excellent miking, too.
That unboxing made my heart speed up! Beautiful drums. Noticed the Slingy too! I have '69 Ludwigs. They love clear Ambassadors.
@@TheMusicRoom1973 Yeah, i like looking at the inner shells with re-rings while playing. I also have '48 Radio Kings. Fiberskins sound really good on those. Amb. top, Diplomat bottoms. Oh, '75 slingerlands too! 5 ply shells on those. Cheers!
@@TheMusicRoom1973 Oh, and try this on the bass drum. Ambassador's on the Bass. Coated or clear. No port. Two, 2 and half in. Felt strips. The way they were shipped back in the day. Crank it up a bit, and be prepared to have your timbers shivered.
Nice kit my man! All three tunings are awesome, I like higher tuning the most. I can’t wait to get my Classic Maples ordered this April, best drums ever! If that’s a 22”, I can’t even imagine how massive the 26” bass drum I’m getting will be!
Jeff Holden That’s awesome man! Glad to hear you’re loving them, it’s crappy when you buy something and you regret it. I’ve done that in the past many times, I’ve put this kit off to try something else and I was never happy in the end. In my mind I’ve always wanted a set of Ludwig’s and this time it’s happening for sure. I even went out and bought myself a Ludwig 14” x 6.5” Standard Maple Snare in Aged Ebony. Check it out, it’s a killer snare for the money! Awesome unboxing and sound demo though my man, makes me want to order my drums today haha!

Great looking and sounding kit brother! I recently bought a classic maple 13/16/18/24x14. Vintage black oyster pearl wrap like yours. Awesome drums. Coupled with either a 6.5x14 early 2000’s black beauty with a coated vintage emperor or a vintage ‘76 402 with a regular emp. They just sound “right”. Paiste 2002’s for cymbals and I think it’s THE rock kit and sound. Anyway, glad you’re happy with them, I share in your excitement and happiness with your kit!
Jeff Holden Yeah, I agree. Gear Aquisition Syndrome (G.A.S.), always something to buy right? I have been very happy with the 2002’s. They have that beautiful “Paiste” shimmer, they don’t break and they sound great with the Ludwig kit. I have 15” sound edge hats, really great sounding hats. Couldn’t be happier. I do have a 24” giant beat ride that I like a lot. Crashable, dark.....really nice. Your gear is great, great playing as well. Enjoy those Ludwigs!!

I love Tama. I got a Classic Maple kit a couple years ago and don't regret it. I even got a Keystone X kit and love that one too. I use the Keystone for gigging. I love those too.
I have the same kit, a 2023 in black oyster pearl but with a 13x9 tom being the only difference. Just bought it June 19th.

The kit sounds just great Jeff! Did you muffle the bass drum at all..or is it wide open?
My church just acquired a brand new ludwig drumset. I had been playing a very old yamaha set with new evans drumheads with some muffling which I thought sounded pretty good. I have played pearl drums too. After listening to this video, I am excited about playing the new ludwig set. I might not even do too much tuning (with the exception of the snare drum) since the drums sound so good right out of the box. I was amazed at the range of tuning that can be done and still sound awesome.

@@TheMusicRoom1973 You were right! I really enjoyed playing the new ludwig drums. I only did minimum tuning and no muffling and they sound great. Can't say that for the old yamaha set I was playing on.
That kit sounds wonderful at all tunings. Low, medium and high. That is what I love about classic maples. Are those clear Emperors that came on the kit?
That set is filthy sir. Great tuning range and all that. About the ported bass drum option. I like a solid head on the front of my bass drum. Gives a rounder sound in my opinion.
@@TheMusicRoom1973 I play a lot of small gigs so I don't need to mic my kick all that much. It also depends on what set I'm as well. I have 3. The grestch kick came with a ported head, and a kick port as well. The verve kick is not muffled at all, solid front head, and tuned to a medium tone. The tama kick is slightly muffled and tuned for bebop.
Bought a 2020 ludwig kit like yours but with a 24'' bass, so hard taming the beast without a port hole
Nice video and beautiful kit. When I was in high school (early 80s) I had a similar set, from the 60’s, in blue oyster. Want to get your same setup in blue oyster or sky blue pearl now. I love 1 up, two down. Did you think about the fab 22 set and adding the 14” floor tom? Or did you hate the 13 mounted tom? I prefer 12 to 13, but was wondering if you priced it out each way? I’m in Northwest Indiana and will use Sweetwater as well.
First of all Jeff congrats with this really fantastic new looking but for most sounding Ludwig kit. I hope you will play it for many years with a lot of pleasure my brother. I did watch the whole video like always and I couldn't believe my ears how good that kit sounds right out of the box. F..king awesome. Them drums sound fantastic out of the box.Do you recall app. 1/2 turns top and bottom for the 12 ' tom out of the box.??? Got to be the best sounding 12" I ever heard.
Beautiful... I just bought my Classics last Summer. I'm adding an 8 x 12 rack this Summer BUT my music store/dealer keeps telling me that Ludwig doesn't make that size with the larger Classic lug. Obviously someone is mistaken

WOW so glad I just ordered a ludwig classic Maple kit with a 12x9 rack tom,, want to add another rack tom but cannot decide on a 10x8, 10x9, 13x10 or 13x11? Even thinking about a 12x11 to go with the 12x9?? any suggestions

This is the exact kit I'm looking at. Did you call Sweetwater to order them, or just order them online? Also, does your 8x12 have the Atlas mount? If so, did it come with a tom mount that clamps to a cymbal stand? They sound great!

Im thinking about getting a configuration just like this and that low tuning sounds great! By the way, what mic clips are you using on the drums? I was hoping to get some mic clips to save from mic stands too.
The clips actually came with the AT mics I used. I'm pretty sure they are proprietary to this audio technica mic. Thanks for watching!
Beautiful kit, love the sounds .... did you order it with the funky lug tom mount? Will you mount in a cymbal stand someday? Did they you the other missing lug? Are the floor tom legs ... lug mounted too? I didn’t notice ... beautiful finish ....

I recommend the Atlas Arch Mount for the rack tom and a LAC251CH telescoping cymbal arm for the ride cymbal, less stands to lug around. Drums sound great.

I'm anxious to hear the comparison. I have a Bonham size set of maple classics from 05 with coated Emperors and Ambassadors. After hearing yours I'm wondering if I wouldn't like the clears better.

I play a set of these and set Sonor Prolites. Anyone who asks me if they should get a medium maple Sonor SQ2 kit I tell them to just get a Ludwig Classic Maple and save yourself about $2500. BTW, Sonor Prolites are ultra thin maple with thin re-rings. Great kits.
I actually really love the sound of thin ply drums. But these Classic Maples soooo freaking versatile. They truly do everything really well, hi tuning l, low tuning, quiet...loud they do it all. And you’re right about by the price. They can hang with kits that cost twice as much. Thanks for watching!!!
my dream is to own a Ludwig Downbeat in vintage black oyster oyster pearl, but my only issue is that I do not want a Ludwig atlas tom mount on my rack, do i have to request any business who sells to not include that or am I stuck with it ?

Do they send you a lug to replace the Alas mount on the rack tom? I want to put my rack tom in a snare basket like you have it but i don't want that atlas mount sticking out. I haven't got my kit yet hopefully next week.
@@TheMusicRoom1973 I just bought a LCM "Bonhamesque" style, the finish is green sparkle, sizes 24x14, 13x9 and 16x16 and is amazing, the ludwig atlas is really great!

Nice video. Great drum set. You might want to use a pop filter or a different mic for you voice. It was very plosive and still muddy,

@@TheMusicRoom1973 I love the old-school "arch spurs." Very simple to use once you put collars on them to serve as memory locks, very stable and look totally vintage.

I would of got a 12x9 and a 15x13 flr tom instead of the 14 I have a maple classic 10x8 12x9 22x18 15x13 16x16 and its killer

People are definitely sleepin' on Ludwig these days. They've really upped their game and they're doing a horrible job of getting that message out. I mean that low tuning was just ridiculous. Puts DW and John Goode's cross-hatching diagonal ply, NASA rocket scientist, "timbre" BS drum-making to shame. lol
