Are the N63 rod bearings still an issue on newer N63TU engines? So the 2008 to 2013 engines are to be avoided, but after that did BMW learn nothing after all the lawsuits and "customer care package" recalls?
I sure wish I saw this before I went with my girlfriend to trade her audi in for a f15 550i. 3 motors in 2 years from my back pocket to bmw, 25k. Check engine light was almost always on.
The N63 has had 3 technical updates. He doesn’t seem to even distinguish the new from the old. I have seen that the updates have helped a lot. I don’t think any of them pertained to rod bearings though.
This is awsome. Great video man. Love these discussions. One thing I've always been lost on thoe. For example. M54 n55 s63 ect. What exactly is the number and letter representing about the engine. Same for chasis codes. For example e46. Does that mean example 46? Lol they like it so they produced it much like wd-40 (water displacement 40th test)
greetings brother! Great job, thanks for sharing your knowledge! I can ask you a question, I have a 2012 BMW X6 M, S63 4.4 twin turbo gasoline engine. The block broke, I'm looking for a block to make the new engine. Several mechanics tell me that the N63 block is the same as the S63, is that true? if you can help me thanks 😎
You should've made a clear clarification at the beginning between N63 an N63TU and the model years, for those not that familiar. They almost different engines. N63s were limited to a few years and quite old now.
I used to absolutely love all BMW’s . My E38 750iL is an absolute bulletproof ROCKET !! However, all the ones built after 2008 are usually 100k time bombs. Way too much plastic and bad engineering. I have a friend that I worked with at Corning Telecommunications (Dirk N. ) in Munich that left Corning during the draw-down of 2014 to go to work for BMW . He even told me to ABSOLUTELY STAY AWAY from any BMW’s from 2008 to 2016 . He described the short-cuts that they were taking to reduce all costs for manufacturing. He specifically told me that these cars are and at the time would be JUNK !!
Hey Nathan....Good info. I have a 2012 X5 with the N63 and 120k miles on it. Chased my tail with it for a couple years and now going to put a donor N63 with 70k motor into it. Going to do timing chains and crank and rod bearings on it before it goes back into the car. Anything else that you suggest I might look? I plan on taking the original motor and rebuilding it from ground up.
does the n63tu also have rod bearing issues? i really want a bmw v8, i have owned m54, n52, n55, they have been decent to work on, so i think i am willing to take on the n63tu
Hi Nathan, would you mind sharing if these engineering issues with BMW engines are ones that are tuned or raced at a track ? I ask because if a BMW engine is maintained correctly and driven by soccer moms to the grocery store and STILL plagued by these issues then it’s more alarming. Alarming as in how on earth can a company the size of BMW with a long history engineer an engine that fails with normal use. Some of these engine issues are not acceptable. Meaning how were these engines not failing during their extreme testing that takes place in research and development before it goes into production ? It’s like the engineers were asleep. I understand that no matter what every manufacturer isn’t going to be able to build an engine that is always trouble free. Even Toyota has hiccups. However, it seems as if BMW is having many many issues. More so than other manufacturers.
I have bmw n63 While driving when i open window i can smell exhaust pretty strong but no visible leaks and bank 2 o2 sensor gets black it runs fine no codes no visible leaks what do you think it’s the problem ?
I got a Autel MS908 scanner had at dealer last year now can't find my 02 banks 1&2 tried everything they don't show up? Can find on other cars. I can see 02 Temps only? Anyway code gone after full pull on hwy. 2006 M5 I'm 231km on motor no bearings done.
Never heard of rod bearing problems on N55, im part of an E70 X5 forum and even doing a search yields nothing. Thats not called a rod bearing problem thats people not using the correct oil or oil/maintenance problems in general from the owner. A REAL rod bearing problem is S65 and S85. N55 does not belong in the same category with those engines, the N55 is a reliable solid engine mine currently has 130k runs like it did when it was new and burns no oil.
@@zacm5834 5k miles seems to be the sweet spot for oil changes, atleast with the inline 6 engines that we have. I use Liqui Moly and the engine is a bit quieter and runs smoother with this oil i highly recommend it if you dont already use it.
Had a 750i F01 with N63 - THANK GOD I was able to find an idiot who loved the car and paid full KBB price . Got rid of this garbage before it will start breaking on me . I have an X5 N55 with 60k This engine could have been so much better. I Just did the front seal myself. My n63 has been such a cool customer with regular maintenance. Then again, I'm due for a tension before it starts to rattle.
This is very good info for people to know. I'm pretty sure there aren't any 500+ HP cars that run 150K miles without repair (Lexus LC maybe)? This is a driver's car for people with $$ I love my F85. I have $10K under the seat for the first noise I hear. Enjoy your Corollas.

You should be fine. The n63 cars from 2014 and up aren’t accually the n63. It’s the n63tu and it’s way better. Way more reliable. You’ll be fine. But I always recommend maintenance before performance. That means spark plugs injectors coils gaskets and that’s really it. And if you want any more reliably it’s always an option to replace the charge coolers. 🙂

Oh...befor it went he said he had to wiggle it around to get sound and replace his cable thinking it was the prob turned out to be the aux plug was bad. It eventually failed completely. What about someone that wants to buy one and has mechanics around him that, for a price, could help him work on it? I'm learning everything I can about the E60 M5. I get it's not the best engine, but most older cars need a lot of work anyway.
So basically don't get one? Is Audi or MB any different? I'm looking for a V8 awd luxury sedan that I can drive across the country without it blowing up in the middle of Kansas lol
Audis can be worse. Mercedes has SOME good engines, but they're renowned for sensors continuously failing. Honestly, get a lexus because THEY are good. Most European stuff is a nightmare. My uncles friend owned a Mercedes dealership for YEARS and says they're just nightmare vehicles and to sell them 5 years after new if you get one.
Sorry, but a lot of this is foreign to me, but it is interesting. I am thinking about purchasing a 2013 X6 50ix with 35k miles. While I'm planning on paying for an inspection, I'm still leery because of the issues I'm hearing. With regular maintenance, is this a good buy or still a poor decision?

@@zzzzVIDEOSzzzz I’m talking about the N63TU3 the ones in the f90 m5 etc
@@yophilli ok but the point is the guy in the video didn't really mentioned N63TU3. He mainly talked about S85 and N55.
I’ve heard the later 550 engines like the 2013 and newer didn’t have a lot of the problems that the 2011-2012 550 had is this true and the newer you get it was better as in the tu ones ?
Get a TU model. Way less issues more power and much more reliable
Where are you finding these for $5k...? I can't find a broken 750li anywhere.
How can you not mention the problems with the hot V setup of the N63 and S63 engines?
Are the N63 rod bearings still an issue on newer N63TU engines? So the 2008 to 2013 engines are to be avoided, but after that did BMW learn nothing after all the lawsuits and "customer care package" recalls?
New ones are solid
So what I learned from this video if you want a fast 4 door car buy a hellcat or CTS-V
Lmao no
I like the 740li with the inline 6 turbo!!!
Thanks for the clear and honest take on the rod bearing issues...
It was totally not true.
Driving without engine beauty cover on hot 4.4i v's may help with heat disapation. 4.8i is better without the twins.
The cover is meant to manage turbo airflow from getting everywhere else in that hotass engine. Put it back on, turbos are expensive.
Only have the s85 motor but all are screwed if not maintained. Nathan thanks for the comments about my mom it’s appreciated ❤️
No problem Duane thanks for watching
TU’s! Buy the late 2013 and newer. Way better refreshed.
greetings brother! Great job, thanks for sharing your knowledge! I can ask you a question, I have a 2012 BMW X6 M, S63 4.4 twin turbo gasoline engine. The block broke, I'm looking for a block to make the new engine. Several mechanics tell me that the N63 block is the same as the S63, is that true? if you can help me thanks 😎
rod bearings are easy , the materials are softer than crankshaft. cranks are usually good. your right replace before bangin.
You should've made a clear clarification at the beginning between N63 an N63TU and the model years, for those not that familiar. They almost different engines. N63s were limited to a few years and quite old now.
Great video Nathan. Long live the E46! lol
They have rod issues tooo

Got an n54 with 220k turbos need to come out but with stage 2+ can’t complain since it’s lasted this long
I used to absolutely love all BMW’s .
So if your looking for a more reliable motor go with a B58 (M340i) vs. the M550i?
How is there no class action lawsuit for all these rod bearings
Because it's not as common as he makes it sound like it is lol
Hey Nathan....Good info. I have a 2012 X5 with the N63 and 120k miles on it. Chased my tail with it for a couple years and now going to put a donor N63 with 70k motor into it. Going to do timing chains and crank and rod bearings on it before it goes back into the car. Anything else that you suggest I might look? I plan on taking the original motor and rebuilding it from ground up.
does the n63tu also have rod bearing issues? i really want a bmw v8, i have owned m54, n52, n55, they have been decent to work on, so i think i am willing to take on the n63tu
n63tu is a whole different engine, it’s much more reliable.
@@paradox5556 wrong, n63tu is still not a master piece it does have rod bearing issues
@@Entertainmentinc1 how am i wrong by saying an n63tu is much more reliable than an n63?
2022 checking in, F10 M5 from first model year are no longer 20-22k ... they're 30k+ with 100k + miles & potentially an accident report
I have bmw n63 While driving when i open window i can smell exhaust pretty strong but no visible leaks and bank 2 o2 sensor gets black it runs fine no codes no visible leaks what do you think it’s the problem ?
Great video!!! Lots of good info. I jus got my first BMW is a 2008 535xi with bad rod bearings. I learned a lot from your videos
Could this be the last BMW (E60 M5) I ever own? Who needs these future headaches?
I got a Autel MS908 scanner had at dealer last year now can't find my 02 banks 1&2 tried everything they don't show up? Can find on other cars. I can see 02 Temps only? Anyway code gone after full pull on hwy. 2006 M5 I'm 231km on motor no bearings done.
If the oil and filters are changed every 10,000kms are the rod bearings still problematic?
Never heard of rod bearing problems on N55, im part of an E70 X5 forum and even doing a search yields nothing. Thats not called a rod bearing problem thats people not using the correct oil or oil/maintenance problems in general from the owner. A REAL rod bearing problem is S65 and S85. N55 does not belong in the same category with those engines, the N55 is a reliable solid engine mine currently has 130k runs like it did when it was new and burns no oil.
Exactly what I was thinking. My 2011 535i has 123,000 miles on the clock and runs beautifully. I also do my oil changes religiously at 5,000 miles.
Not a reliable car, coils are going bad, turbos, and engine is BURNING OIL AT ALL TIMES, do yourself a favor and get a Japanese car, Honda, Toyota, Lexus, Nissan . You’re 100% right on this video . Never again .
Forgot oil coolers, they usually pack some shavings.
I have an X5 N55 with 60k
This engine could have been so much better.
Putting the Xhp flash tool on and the 4 wheel drive delete so I can be 2 wheel when I want Xhp flash is a nice remap of this box you won’t go back to stock trust me
Wait so even the 2012+ BMW M6’s still have rod issues??? Talking about the F13,F12,F06
Show us some rod bearing... i never see anyone say anything about rod bearings
What oil would you guys recommend for DIY change using 5,000mi oil change intervals? Would 5W-30 full synthetic suffice?
Already bought the 2014 750LI 🙃 here we go
You should be fine. 🙂
Please talk about E65/E66 with N62 engines
Is 2022 bmw 550i n63 is reliable or no
N55 rod bearings? Mine has 120 000 miles, oil changed each 5000 miles!
Wow was looking at car with replaced and rebuilt and after 9k miles now he says needs new injectors. Said he put new turbos and hoses all so
I replaced every part of my coolant system on 09 bmw 550i now she running hot?!? I bleed it and everything?!?
N63 came out in 2008, not in 2011 like you say in this video.
Its always nice to listen to wise speech! Subscribed.
Light Aircraft piston engine aviation requires oil change every 100 engine hours. Engine rebuild after 1000-2000 engine hours depending on engine recommendations. Think yourself when manufacturer sets oil change interval 10K miles. 30-50K miles - dead engine.
Oh bro!!! You actually have a BMW workshop channel as well as MRE one? Nice!!!
I just bought x6M 2014 not bad so far
How’s it going lol
is it a TU? I bought a 2014 X6 and was surprised to find out (when the rod bearings went out at 93K) that it is NOT a TU!
The rod bearings hold up...its other things...valve stem seals....
Cool videos on your page, I've got X5M E70 I'm planning on replacing the rod bearings as I do with any performance car I buy, I'm also thinking of replacing the main bearings in place while I'm that deep into the job one at a time of course maybe loosening all the caps slightly, question is have you ever replaced main bearings in situe I'm wondering would I be able to slide out the top bearings especially the thrust bearing in theory it could work any ideas and input would be cool
When putting that much power on the top end, Why the ..... didn't they beef up the bottom end?? FFS. It a wonder the mains don't have issues....SMH
I’ve got a 2014 bmw 750li xdrive with 30k. Anything I should worry about? It has low miles..
Hey Nathan I’m at a standstill my AUX and USB inside the center console isn’t working and when I go to select aux from the audio menu I can’t select it, I drive a 08 535i any ideas on what this is? A fuse maybe inside?
Mine only lights up in menu when a aux cord is plugged into it. Thats on my e70. then it can be selected on menu in idrive. Atleast on mine that is
nie wissen I’ve plugged in an aux cord and can’t select the aux in the menu for it to switch to aux
@@rawsick oh. Sorry. Just a guess but maybe the aux plug in is bad. Broken wire, something. I wouldnt think it would have a separate fuse by itself so if something else isn't working maybe a fuse then but I doubt it. My guess first would be bad aux plug in. I've seen them go or wear out in other things. Like my previous car I had once. Can buy new ones. Maybe able to cut off and splice a new one in. (What I did on my kids old legacy gt) this is just a simple guess without actually looking at it myself. Oh...befor it went he said he had to wiggle it around to get sound and replace his cable thinking it was the prob turned out to be the aux plug was bad. It eventually failed completely. Hope its a help
As someone who likes to but 8 your old BMWs and run them for another 20 years this is very worrying.
What about someone that wants to buy one and has mechanics around him that, for a price, could help him work on it? I'm learning everything I can about the E60 M5. I get it's not the best engine, but most older cars need a lot of work anyway.
Same I have connections n want to buy one still but when you find out a response let me know lol
N63 vs N55 - which is more reliable in a 2018 X5? Completely different I know. My 2014 X5 N55 is about hit 70k and I'm considering selling. Thanks
n55 is less complicated
just take a look at what the two engines look like side by side
I have a big question what can you tell me about the B58 engine is it good or still badd I hope to get an answer from you
So basically don't get one?
Get a lexus. BMWs are always having some kinda issues when the miles get slightly higher

its hard to understand how BMW can't seem to fix known problems on their vehicles that other manufacturers don't seem to have any problems with. Rod bearings every 70k. Good grief.
Planned obsolescence
Overblown issues that the internet seem to think applies to everyone and everything. It takes about 2 seconds to find out that the n55 he was talking about is extremely unlikely to experience rod bearing failure

Hi , I have 750 LI X 2012 N63, so far 57 k but some issues with oil leak ,Nt much dripping , should I be concerned ,it ask for 1 qt oil every 1000 700 miles. LMK
It's probably not an oil "leak". It is burning the oil inside the motor.
You also forgot Valve stem seals. These are just JUNK engines. I don't understand how you can look calmly into the camera and nonchalant be cool about an engine that needs what is a essential bottom end rebuild @70k miles.... that is ridiculous. These engines are JUNK. Modern BMW's are mostly trash nowadays unfortunately. If Ford and GM cranked out engines that need rod bearings replaced every 70k miles they wouldn't be in business anymore (and massive lawsuits would follow). This is not a maintenance item - it is a design/engineering flaw. BMW screwed up. Plain and simple.
True
Agreed. It's ONLY an IMAGE thing of luxury and being high class to have one. Meanwhile there's plenty of lexuses out there that ARE MADE properly. Even the genisis has a good engine.
This is why buy these Used sports cars are a Major Gamble. I'd Buy a Brand new cars, which comes with full waranty so zero worry, its at top brand new peak performance, safer, and I can fully enjoy as first owner without sitting in an old used car someone elsr farted in, left their boogers and who know what disgusting stuff in it.
Accepting depreciation is much netter than lossing everything to gamble on crap used car and get nothing in retrun, not even use.
