    Have had my 550 for 12 years. Few problems although lately just had a Vanos solenoid fail. But I ignored BMW oil change recommendations (21,000 km) and did my oil every 5k instead. When the car went in for the CCP the service manager called me and asked why my engine was the only one he had seen without any sludge.

    I read that the N63tu (2013/14) rectified the turbo waste gate issue. Further, valve guides, timing chain, fuel injectors are all now covered up to 110,000 miles by BMW NA. A class action lawsuits made sure of that.

    You can reduce the head temperature by titanium wrapping the down pipes and turbos, or using a ceramic coat.
    Then I think an extra oil radiator should help
    Then the direct injection issues affect most engines: carbon deposits. So it may help adding two OCC’s, and installing two 5bar injectors before the throttle body to spray some fuel to clean the valves. A methanol injection control unit may work, but you need a fuel pump, pressure regulator and a small aluminum tank from racing parts and custom charge pipes. I’ll do this for my new b48 engine. The hybrid port/direct injection is already used by manufacturers

    Yep the N63 is definitely one of those motors you either have to really keep on top of or avoid altogether. On my Uncle's X6 50i we went ahead with catless downpipes and turbo wraps for the heat soak issue, had a carbon cleaning service performed (manifold taken off), ran a catch can, installed a 90 degree thermostat and change the coolant every 2 years both in the main and auxiliary system. That's what we did so far.... Later on we will be looking out for piping and tubing located in the V of the motor to see if they fail. At this moment the motor runs fantastic and pulls like hell but constant checking is required.

    • @gjkMN
      @gjkMN 2 роки тому

      How are things holding up? If I buy an n63 x5, which I just might, catless and wrapped downpipes with turbo blanket and 90 t stat are what I'd do as well. Curious how much it'll actually help the engine long term.

My question is: if this N63 is as bad as they say, then why does BMW continue to make it? I mean if it was that bad, wouldn't they go back to the drawing board and figure something else out for 8 cyl. engines? This engine configuration has been in production for a decade now.

      I had an extended warranty Platinum something... on my 2011 550i. I'm on my 3rd engine. Car has 68,000 miles and the engine 24,000 now. Last bill was $21,000 plus (covered by the warranty). The newest version of the engine in 2018 was sent over to NY BMW dealer from Germany and then installed. I had to pay $1,500 for diagnostic. The warranty company was looking for any reason not to cover the engine replacement. Trying to say It was owner fault for not having adequate oil in the engine, but the teardown/diagnostic proved otherwise. All I want to say is thank God for the warranty. The old engine used to burn so much oil and threw two bearings which contaminated the engine with metal pieces and caused it to knock. The current engine burns a quart every 5,000 miles or so (it's still BS). I replaced the coolant lines and 2 ignition coils, due to a misfire under acceleration to 80 mph. BMW was using the old, faulty coils. If you need coils replaced, make sure you get the new version. Other than what I've mentioned, the 550i is good to go. (mine's a 6 speed manual, M-Sport, rear wheel drive, still looks like brand new) Used to have the Dinan stage 2, but haven't had the car reflashed. I'm fine with it as it is. I own other cars if I want to go fast.
      (I copied and pasted my original comment from above)... There was a class action suit regarding excessive oil consumption. I've received a letter saying that I could trade my 550i in and also get a few thousand dollars off a new Bimmer. Don't remember other details, was probably over 5 years ago.

    Does anyone think that if you were to make the cooling systems in the n63 super beefy and almost too big and over cool things would help with the valve stem seals and getting hot?

    • @mmarmrcz6770
      @mmarmrcz6770 3 роки тому +4

      It's not really a bad engine, but it has its flaws. The main one is the turbos are housed right on top of the engine, in the V. There's your problem, HEAT. The turbos get super hot and fry the oil in the tubes for circulating the oil to the turbos. If you drive the car hard and suddenly just turn the engine off, the turbos haven't cooled down effectively and the extreme heat fries the oils in the tubes, which isn't circulating now. Best thing is to drive gently to your destination, the last few miles, so the engine can cool down some, or have the engine idle for a few minutes after driving hard. And change the oil every 5000 miles and make sure oil level is full.

      Mate there is no preventing it buddy most parts on that engine left the factory failure mate it’s not a case of if on the N63 it’s a case of WHEN as it will all go out regardless of the care mate you find the people that care for these the most is the ones that it ends up affecting when they change everything
      That’s why bmw was offering extended warranty on this engine for this reason

    Had to trade in my 550i GT with that variant of the N63. Unfortunately car fax had a lot of info on my car that depreciated the value. On my last visit to the dealership, the warranty covered $12k worth of work. Most of it due to engine work: valve replacement for at least the second time and the rear suspension. Glad I had paid for the extended warranty. If nothing else, the internet is a great source of info for this and a lot of things. Obviously uTube helps too. I'm curious to know if a 6 cylinder engine could replace the N63??!!
