When Zeppelin met Elvis: May 1974

- Опубліковано 3 жов 2016
- The two most popular and successful live acts of the 1970s were Elvis Presley and Led Zeppelin, who played to capacity crowds night after night.
Coincidentally, both were handled by Concerts West, one of the biggest tour promoters in America.
In May 1974, the company offered complimentary tickets to Zeppelin for Elvis' gig at the LA Inglewood Forum, with the possibility of meeting him afterwards.
The group were huge Elvis admirers and three members (Plant, Page and Bonham) gladly accepted along with their infamous manager, Peter Grant.
Although not a big fan of hard rock, Elvis knew who Zeppelin were and was amused that his young step-brother, Ricky, was so excited to hear that they'd be in the audience.
The 1970s Elvis was far removed from the rock 'n' roll rebel who had first inspired them, but the group enjoyed the concert and were thrilled at the thought of finally meeting their idol.
Many years later, Zeppelin front man, Robert Plant, looked back on that night with great fondness and much good humour ...

* There were no photographs taken of the meeting and no film exists of Elvis' LA gig, nor was it professionally recorded. The photographs, film and music in this video are all taken from other dates in 1974 to give an accurate impression of events. The short audio extract of Elvis mentioning Zeppelin on stage, however, is authentic and comes from a lo-fi source.
The highlight of my wife’s life was she screamed “I love you Elvis” and he responded “I love you too baby.” 1976 She’s listening to him in heaven now.
Beautiful.
Bless you sir
Randy benton kinky.
Was this in Denver?
redhot No Dear, It was Odessa, Texas
Elvis was chiseled perfection and nobody even comes close to his looks or talent!! Long live the King!
He is Alive !!
He is not yep sitting with the Lord Jesus and our heavenly father he is a preacher in Arkansas going by the alias name Bob Joyce ..!!
@@janaprocella8268 your are so dumb
He's dead and my gf said I'm better looking 😆
Just hearing Elvis say Led Zeppelin makes me smile..
+Victor Kreitner Especially when he said to start the song over. He wanted to sound good for those hard rocking English lads. That's mad respect on Elvis's part.
Me too 😁
My exact feeling. That made it worth it to hear this video.
Yeah me too
A whole lotta love.
I never knew Elvis had that much influence on Robert Plant and John Lennon that’s really beautiful so special and amazing. The world was blessed with Elvis.
Seriously?!? He basically invented rock n roll. Every true rocker is influenced by Elvis.
"Before Elvis, there was nothing."- John Lennon
@@JFmK-sh5nh Yep, even performers like Jimi Hendrix (said he wanted to be a rocker after seeing Elvis in Seattle) and Jim Morrison who said Elvis (along with Sinatra) showed him how a performance can affect an audience.
also Tom Petty
A profound influence both on John Lennon and Paul McCartney for that matter.... Since you referenced Lennon...
Elvis was a Blessed Human Being..
Zep was in awe of Elvis. No doubt a huge moment for Plant and Page especially.
I saw Elvis at the Forum in 74’ when I was 17 years old. A friend had bought tickets for her mom to see him, but her mom was ill that night so I went in her place . At the time I wasn’t really an Elvis fan, I had just tagged along for something to do. That one night changed all that. He had such a presence. I will never forget the contagious sense of energy in that audience, it’s not something I can even describe. Whenever I hear his music now, the feeling of seeing him live comes right back. I am forever grateful for the experience.
I was at that concert as well. Great Memories 👍
Well I definitely envy you! I can only imagine what it was like! I'm 37 now and have always been a big Elvis fan!
I had same experience about James Brown.🙋
You are so lucky 🍀
I did however see Led Zeppelin two different nights at their show in 1977 at the Forum
An amazing opportunity , theres was only one Elvis , still loved and admired , you were bless to see him that day ,👍🎶🎸❤️
Elvis was a class act. Humble and courteous, no matter how big he got.
Elvis is the epitome of Rock 'N Roll. The look, the sound, the everything. Rock N'Roll wouldn't exist without him.
it already existed in the black community well before Elvis, he just put into orbit.
When Led Zeppelin admires you, you’re definitely the King of something.
43 years after his death Elvis is still the King. That's just amazing.
* *Gilbarwaters,* * - Oh please.... *knock it off.* Elvis was an entertainer, *THAT'S ALL.* He was - *NEVER* - a singer/songwriter. Know your facts. It was Sid Tepper, who wrote more than 50 songs for Elvis Presley who's to be acknowledged. He delivered the dessert on a plate.
@@JamminClemmons That's exactly what he was; an entertainer. With a great voice and stage presence who influenced many of the greatest icons of rock today, to pick up a guitar and write songs and sing and put together a band. As many as the blue singers from the 50's did. Elvis is considered "the king" by these rock icons you're probably fan of.
I read discomfort and dislike in your comment. Chill out. I'm not a fan of Elvis but I do like many of the songs he made popular and I admit he was one of a kind.
@@JamminClemmons You were the only person out of the 5,786,368 views who potentially saw your comment to like your comment. Seems most wouldn't agree.
@@JamminClemmons why does it bother you so much if someone loves an entertainer?
Elvis was a bit stupid but he was famous for being handsome and a singer second.
I met Elvis when I was four, and he was SO nice! I fell in love with him that night. His voice was AMAZING and sent chills through my body. He put me on stage and asked me several questions. I asked if I could read his playlist, and Elvis asked, “You can read?” I told him my mom put me in front of the television all day and I watched Sesame Street and various other educational shows. My mother was so embarrassed! He allowed me to choose three songs and he said he’d play them all consecutively. I chose In the Ghetto, I Can’t Help Falling in Love, and A Little Less Conversation. I was still sitting atop the stage when Elvis asked if I knew what the last song meant. I said, “It means the man wants the woman to shut up and he wants more sex!” My mother was so humiliated that her face was bright red! Elvis told my parents, “Y’all are gonna have trouble with her. This little lady’s too smart!” My Daddy and Elvis became close friends in Germany whilst in the Army. I was only able to attend one show, but my parents attended several. It was a fun night for me as we went backstage before the show and even the band and backup singers were wonderful. Elvis was nervous and I asked him why. He said, “I’m afraid they ain’t gonna like me.” He told me he was nervous before every show. I told him that everyone loved him. He kissed me on the cheek when I told him that, but I meant it. I was devastated when he died. My parents attended his funeral but wouldn’t allow me to go with them. Elvis may be gone, but he’ll NEVER die. I’ll never forget the gorgeous man with the great sense of humor and the voice that will never be emulated.
wow, what a amazing story you are very lucky.
Wonderful story!! What an amazing experience and lasting memory of the King!
Good for you, Lorelei Lee. You are truly one of the lucky ones.
Wonderful story. Thanks for sharing.
And you was 4 years old ?
I was at that show, sitting right behind them! I got tickets from a dear friend who was Elvis' hairdresser forever. Wonderful memory!!!
wow 3 degrees of separation! here on UA-cam!
Were you able to get a picture of Led Zeppelin with Elvis in the background on stage? That would be awesome.
No. This was way before phone-cameras, and I didn’t take a camera to the show. They might not have been allowed.
never thought I'd ever hear Presley utter the words "Led Zeppelin". Pretty sweet.
True seems like night and day comming together,,
Amen to that, so very cool
Yes indeed...he pauses and concentrates to carefully enunciate “Led Zeppelin” - as though he had never pronounced the band’s name before in his life...
@Joshua Dowling Especially given how drugged out Elvis was when he went to seek a "DEA" badge. LOL
@Joshua Dowling And he was so jealous of the Beatles he couldn;t stand it.
I was fortunate enough to stand on stage with him in the 70's singing backup as a member of The Stamps Quartet. Loved him and loved singing with him. Such wonderful memories.
Thanks, Mr Stricklnad -- lovely to hear from you.
Must have been amazing.
Larry Strickland thanks for what you did with Elvis...you are a great singer.
You were a Stamp? You were a lovely backing group, and it's easy to see how much Elvis loved & respected you all in the life videos we have. Thank you for providing me (and millions like me!) with wonderful moments. God Bless.
Congrats Larry. You are on the soundtrack of my life. Cheers.
What I love is not only was he handsome and talented, he seemed to be such a genuinely nice person. So many interviews of people meeting him all saying how friendly and easy going he was. He truly was an amazing person. He was the whole package! ❤ Elvis
Claiming in public that he loves the Beatles, while at the same time using his connections with the president and the FBI to get their music banned in the US and John Lennon banned from entering the country for his anti-war remarks was very nice of him.
That is simply southern hospitality, a long with good upbringing from gladies
Thought you were talking about Robert Plant at first.
Love Plant's cheery humour; such a warm guy - not just an amazing voice and talent.
I love how all the greats pay tribute to Elvis. As they say if it wasn’t for Elvis kicking down the door there wouldn’t have been all those great bands and singers we listen to today. God bless Elvis long live the king
Even Legends have heroes.
Legends have myths
James Smith right on
Absolutely 👍
Well said. Hell yeah. Both are legends. Love Elvis and Love Led Zeppelin. And this is coming from someone who, although loves all music, is totally into extreme metal (death metal, slam, deathcore, metalcore, etc). But legends are legends...and their legacy never dies.
@@randomdude189 even your Beatles sat and watched Elvis 🇺🇸

Elvis and Robert singing to each other......priceless.
And spontaneously... so cool. Elvis waited til the moment pushed him over the top & I can imagine the confidence he finally gathered2 turn2 Robert & sing some lines2 him. Had2 be awesome. I bet Plant got even more confidence after that. It's a real nod from one Giant to another
Imagine what a recording of that spontaneous combustion would be worth if unearthed today.
Sounded like Robert choked up a bit at the end of telling that story, understandably.
Both knowing & smiling at the game.
Beautiful!
Elvis and Robert singing to each other.
Wow!!
Please take me back in time.. 🙏
Huge fan of Elvis and Led Zep. This story makes me happy.
That would have been a dream duet, Elvis and Robert Plant.
The biggest stars all fell under the spell of Elvis. Every time you hear a story by someone who actually met him, see how their eyes light up telling the story. Elvis had the abillity to make people feel as though they had known him for years, after spending five minutes with him. Plant is visibly moved during the Letterman interview, and who can blame him? He was one of the lucky ones who got to spend time with a phenomenon, who NEVER ever thought he was bigger or better than anyone else.
EXACTLY♥ Elvis Forever!
Just the people who saw Elvis in concert...but never met him....post all over social media and rave about the event having left them positively affected for the rest of their lives. Almost like a spiritual or religious experience. It must have been incredible. In the sixties and seventies, I was too young to truly appreciate his impact on secular music in specific and on 20th century popular culture in general.
Not true at all. John Lennon wasn’t taken by him.
Elvis was in a level that most famous A list stars just hope to one day meet their idols. Elvis could write a note and a person could walk up to the Whitejouse and say I have a message from Elvis and yes the Elvis and the note would be in the Presidents hand and the next day he would get a meetimg with Nixon.
Elvis set that type of fame... EP could open any door and walk in no wait or time limit... they made time serve him...
John Lennon said “Before Elvis, there was nothing.”
You just gotta love Robert's honesty, humor and openness.
and grace
I could watch stuff like this every day. I love when stars gush over bigger stars. Say what you want about Elvis but there will never be another Elvis. That's one soul that was the original. Great stuff.
Elvis saying "Hey Robert!" and then singing to him then with him.
Wow.
you know Elvis was the greatest when every big talking point of famous artists are their memory of Elvis and the impact he had on them.
There are great musicians who have walked the earth, like Led Zeppelin, Buddy Holly, Mozart, Beethoven - and then there's Elvis. Elvis is from the galaxies.
Wow....that last bit when Robert said Elvis ducked his head around the corner to sing to him and they sang to each other, Robert got so choked up with tears like a child meeting his idol again. Just amazing to watch this.
That's because Robert is a great person with a big heart. He is still so humble considering his massive talent &success. Still has a good sense of humour too
Visited Robert Plants house once, Such a lovely warm down to earth guy, I noticed in the bathroom on the wall there was a framed sheet of A4 paper with the words 'To Robert from a fool such as I..... love your friend Elvis Presley' such a beautiful thing to have & treasure!
What I would have given to have seen that! It's hard to believe that Elvis passed just 4 years later. Okay, I'm going to hush as the tears start.
I met Robert plant he’s just a normal guy I mean he walks around like a king but only cause he’s used to people treating him like that
I more than anything relate it to that Robert actually acknowledging that his big idol was living his later years. I have that uncanny feeling that Robert knew that Elvis would not be around too long. That he had served his purpose (if you wanna go religious). But I very much feel that Plant sensed that this ultimate legend of the birth of Rock and Roll was about to fade away...giving others the torch to carry on.
Elvis really was the king & still is.may he rest in peace.
I love this, mutual respect between musicians. Incredible
respect? elvis tried to block Beatles in us... deserved the horns
Zeppelin geeking out on meeting Elvis. How cool! Oh to be a fly on the wall back then.
If Robert Plant is in awe of you then you truly are THE KING!!
Correct.
That speaks volumes.
Have you watched Elvis? The stories are insane. He was truly a badass motherfucker 😂
Amen.
@@randomdude189 But I will probably live to be twice his age.

Elvis was the King. And when one of the all time greatest frontmen in Rock history get emotional about his meeting Elvis. You have to show respect for both of them.
I honestly didn't know Robert Plant was so charismatic and funny.
He's English we're all funny.

What a great video. Robert Plant is a true treasure. His wealth of knowledge in music is unbelievable. It's a shame they don't interview him more.
Led Zeppelin Rules.
Plant. Articulate, smart, appreciative, respectful. AND he loves a good beehive.
Elvis set a precedent that paved the way for the late 60s to early 80s rock scene. Whether you consider him the greatest artist of all time or not, theres no denying that whoever you DO consider is the greatest wouldn't be here were it not for the King.

Elvis was attractive and electrifying. People were all attracted by him. He had magnitism
he was a good lookin man theres no denying it
IF Ava Gardner was male and IF SHE could move and sing woulda been the female Elvis.
I saw Elvis up close and personal in '69 Vegas, and thereafter until Dec '76. You have NO IDEA of the magnetism of this man until you see it for real. It is indescribable. It was that strong. Never saw anything like that ever in my life.
Robert Plant a very humble man and a real gentleman.....One of the greatest voices ever...
He is another Steve Marriott imitator.

Nonsense. Plant was unique. Nobody sang like he did on Black Dog, Immigrant Song, Since I've Been Loving You etc.
Certainly not Steve Marriot.

ONE more reason to love Zeppelin and The King!! ( Like I need one more?) Fantastic stories!
Elvis' influence on popular music is immutable. The man made such a mark on popular music that the reverberations of his influence on the genre are still felt today. He is still referenced, still talked about, still inspiring musicians. It is insane to think about his legacy, nearly 80 years after the iconic era of his music in the 1950s. Without Elvia, I don't know if many of the Delta Blues singers that he loved and venerated would be known today. Say what you want about his artistry, but the man brought attention to many artists who would have been forgotten and lost to time.

Tears rolled down my eyes, to heard that Robert Plan was crying when Elvis was singing to him and also Robert sing to Elvis 🎸🕺
I was a small child when my grandmother and my parents took me to see Elvis in concert. He died on my 12th birthday. Robert Plant is my favorite singer and I have gotten to see him on his solo tour and then with Jimmy Page.
I was 7 living in Australia and I cried my heart out, I still do till this day when I hear his voice.
I raised my children to love him as much as I do❤️
Saw Elvis in Hawaii in 73 when I was just a 12 year old kid. My first concert...Elvis...in Hawaii...Live Via Satellite.

I am just soo happy for Robert...that he was able to have such a timeless meeting with the King...and wonderful of him to share with us common folk ;)
Me to Elvis is my favorite of all time growing up in the 60s/70s the only album's or record's I bought we're Elvis no one else but I also think zep was awesome to an I loved the remark plant made how Elvis want to meet the guy who were selling tickets quicker then he was that's impossible to be true
Very nice to see that Plant, hasn't been jaded by mega success albeit truly deserved, and still possesses the grace to give praise and respect to his inspiration for the path he pursued.
Well as he stated they "ALL" had the same roots to the blues .
Well said, I just never thought that Robert Plant would have been that influenced by Elvis....but now I'm thinking...shit man it's Elvis Presley, da,lol
Well, well said, Paul!!!
Surprised when Plant was on Letterman a few years ago.... sounded like an idiot. Wasn’t expecting that.
When Zeppelin met Elvis, they were literally the biggest band in the world, bigger than The Stones. At that time, they had finished up recording Physical Graffiti and had already revolutionized the rock touring industry, but even they were reduced to awestruck fans. The Beatles also pushed for and finally got to meet Elvis; when they finally met him, they were in awkward silence, they were in complete awe of him. Elvis was the one to break the silence by telling them "if you guys are just going to sit there and stare at me, I'm going to bed".
And Robert Plant has a different view of "mega success" than most other people. After Led Zeppelin's O2 concert almost 10 years ago, they got offers for a tour, one of them would have made them the first billion dollar concert tour, and Plant was the one that walked away from it, much to the chagrin of Page, Jones, and Bonham's son Jason. Plant has always been true to his own inner integrity, and of course is very complimentary to his influences. And besides, we're talking about ELVIS. The only other person higher on the singer totem pole was Frank Sinatra.
Be still my heart! Elvis saying Led Zeppelin!!
2 words I'd taught I'd never hear coming out of Elvis mouth I suppose it is a legend speaking about legends
I have to admit, I did tear up a bit at the thought of Elvis and Robert Plant singing to each other. Sometimes meeting your heroes can be an overwhelming experience. So happy to hear Robert talk about how good Elvis really was.
Elvis just dripped COOL. No one has ever matched his gift.
That's for sure the most amazing gift god could of giving the world
Who's here in 2020 wishing we could be there, with Led Zep, meeting Elvis after his concert, up in his hotel room? Got a whole lotta love for this? Love me tender, love me sweet, and baby, let me know. Robert Plant was the sexiest man alive when he was in his prime, so was Elvis. A meeting of the two great men of music, the lions of legendary lyrics, the golden voiced good old boys of the wild life and good song. All honor goes out to Presley and Plant. The world would not be the same without them.
LOL.
Here now in 2020, with this virus BS ???
I think that would be the whole planet, who would like to go back in time.
I'd prefer the 1950's myself 🤠
When I was young, I just thought Elvis was just another singer......oh how I appreciate him now...
Elvis was an Anomaly, nothing like his way had ever been dreamed of! His passion was Gospel Music, His Record collection was nothing but old Quartet Gospel and lots of Old Black Gospel Quartets and Black Blues and Spiritual Performers. He had thousands of of Quartet Gospel Records, I guess every thing ever made. He had The Blackwood Brothers and The Stamps as His back up singers both Gospel! JD Sumner great Bass singer said after shows they would all get around a piano, Elvis would unwind by all singing Hymns together some time till dawn! I love seeing him in the videos, he will close his eyes and the spirit has got him! My Mom said the Day he died in Natchez Mississippi where they lived at that time, the radio announced it on every channel and the roads were littered with cars on the shoulders! She said people were all over every where you looked in huddles crying!
Ask the Beatles, the Stones - just any rocklegend of the sixties and seventies: All of them are huge Elvis-admirers. There is simply no exception.
I believe John Lennon said "Before Elvis there was nothing."

Bob Dylan agrees.
If the Beatles, Stones, Led Zep, and Freddie Mercury (and probably MJ) all name Elvis as their biggest influence --- then the title "King of Rock 'N Roll" will forever be his

This was the best interview I have ever seen that told the truth about Elvis Presley. A lot of young people just don't know or care about the impact that Elvis brought to the world of music. Thank you Robert Plant.
what impact? he was a performer. he didn't write one song
@@zarni000 Elvis hit 1950's youth many young musicians like a sledgehammer. You don't have to write songs to be a great influence in music. How I love my Elvis,!!!what a man
This was great! I would have loved to have met both Elvis and Led Zeppelin. What an honor.
What made Elvis so unique and special is how he bridged the gap between the crooners of the 1940's (like Bing Crosby) and the straight-ahead rockers of the 1950's (Little Richard, Jerry Lee Lewis, etc.). He was in the right place at the right time, and such a special talent.
Bobby Darin holds that honor - he was the first to croon and rock at the same time. eh
He ripped off the Black music he heard growing up-
Pat Boone ripped off artists, Elvis had a deep & abiding love for Gospel & R&B. Even though I can count his so-called rock songs on one hand! LOL! Whereas Chuck Berry had consistently written gritty rockers. No other artist of his day had as many homages to rock 'n' roll, be it in lyrics or titles. His two string leads and pull-offs have been copied by every rock guitarist since. From The Stones to The Sex Pistols, Berry had more of an influence on rock music than Elvis. He spent the better half of his life singing ballads to blue-haired grannies in Vegas. LOL!

Great story!! It's very rare for your idol to live up to your expectations!!
Love Robert Plant! I've seen lots of interviews on celebrities meeting Elvis. This one is great! The sound is clear and listenable. Thank you! Love Elvis! 💜🌹
The thing about Elvis was he was such a tremendous blues singer, just utterly amazing. The way he sang was all "gut" singing, it's really hard and takes a hell of a lot of strength in the diaphragm and stomach muscles. It took me forever to even get close to getting the kind of vibrato he had and still, I'll never match it and he was singing on that level since he was a teenager.
Georgie Thumbs Elvis sure made the transition BACK to his soul-those 1960to 1967 Hal Wallis crap movie soundtracks then in 1968 World tour by satellite and he came back to his roots with In The Ghetto and Kentucky Rain and HE WAS BACK!!
Robert is a great story teller. Reminds me of getting backstage and meeting him in the 80's and 90's.
He told you stories? If so, enlighten us! Don't tease us Nigel.
I think he wants us all to know that he met him.
The love of Elvis from Plant is very sensitive to hear. Talk about loving you your idol.!
I absolutely love the way musicians promote and support musicians from other genres. It’s heartwarming.
I WAS AT THAT CONCERT! WILL NEVER FORGET IT!
None of these stories I have heard about Elvis surprise me. Everyone that I have ever talked to that met Elvis or new Elvis always said he was a stand up guy and nice to everyone from the time he came on the scene and to the time of his death they all said the same thing. Another story from Robert that backs it up.
Biggest mystery about Elvis is whether he was porkin' Priscilla when she was only 14 --- my guess is YES
Bill I had an elderly patient about ten years ago who told me he had met Elvis decades previously. Seems he was in the service with Elvis' cousin and the cousin took him to Graceland one weekend. He said Elvis cursed like a stevedore, drank a lot, was a great host and was always surrounded by a lot of people.
I could imagine that precise moment when Elvis was leaving and you sing a little song to Robert Plant and Robert Plant sang back to him he started crying I would have loved to been there I understand something so beautiful
Elvis was nothing short of brilliant…what a voice!! Right to the end of his life ❤

Elvis was America, the days when we had real talent he was Super !!!!!
Elvis was drugs.
Drugs was and still is America....so yeah.
America will never be great with a lying criminal like Commie Trump stinkin' up our country
@@billbelzek6748 you cant even vote for a US president LMAO!
@Lynda Anthony BOOM!!! Literally a older gentleman Black neighbor took Elvis under his wing AND TAUGHT HIM HOW TO PLAY THE GUITAR AND EVEN AFTER FAME HE SAT IN THE BALCONY OFTEN AT THE BLACK CHURCH.OF GOD IN CHRIST IN MEMPHIS; HUNG OUT WITH THE FAMOUS BLACK DJ RUFUS THOMAS AT MEMPHIS FAME RADIO STATION WDIA. A lot has NOT been told about evdn a certain Black artist whom Elvis literally trained himself to sing like by listening to his records! "THE HALF AIN'T BEEN TOLD!" Yet, he was beautiful and respectful and The great Mavis Staples speaks well of him. Both from "Memfiss"!!! The Delta rules!🌟🌟✨🌟🌟✨🌟❗
That kind of makes sense, because America seems to have been dead since about the same time. What is the USA these days anyway other than a bunch of polarized angry people that hate each other?
There WILL NEVER be another ELVIS PRESLEY 💋🙏♥️💜😎👍👍
This was such a great story from zeppelin about a person much loved. Elvis is smiling.
Elvis is truly The King of Rock N Roll
Don't forget chuck berry
I was at the Forum that night....and at Graceland when Robert Plant called Elvis years later...xo
I didn't know Robert called Elvis at Graceland. What did they talk about, Linda?
+Linda Thompson Too bad no video of them together. If there is one of this night, I'd love to see it.
Linda what wonderful memories you must have!
Your Awesome Linda !!
