  • In the Shop Tips Tricks Hacks & How To's Workbench Vise Mount Reinforcement ||| This shop tip is about reinforcing your vise mounted to the workbench. It is always important to start with a sturdy workbench. In this case we oversized the wood legs and under bench cross members. The workbench is is secured to the wall giving it extra strengths and stability. We used 3/8” by 12” flat stock steel as the mounting plate. Grade 5 ½” bolts were used to attach the vise and steel plate to the workbench. The shop can be on of the most creative environments available. Many projects are straight forward builds, but ingenuity is around every corner and the mother of all inventions. Yes, that bench is over twenty years old and that vise has taken a beating over time... the extra peice of flat stock steel has made a big difference in its longevaity. What have you reienforced in the shop to make it last longer?

Switzer's Nursery & Landscaping I’m a little shocked that it isn’t grade 8 hardware !!! And only 20 years old?! It could be a 100! But it is solid !

Grade 8 might be a little brittle... for swinting the big mall...

That’s a nice collection of hand malls... (not of of them by far) definitely a sturdy design and build!

Im in the process of mounting my new 6.5" vise right now. My work bench table is no where near as beefy as yours. I am mounting my vise on 1/4" 8x8 steel plate with 1/4" flat bar under the table for the front bolts to go through for additional support. Should work good.

Nice tip, Glenn! I have a pretty sturdy bench my dad and I built back on the farm back in the '80's. There's a 6" vice mounted on it, but the mounting holes are misaligned so that the back bolts end up between the 2x6's on the top. They can loosen up over time. I'm going to try your trick with the metal plate. Great idea!
