The Sea Trout was a better fish than any of the daft big herring most people are chasing in our east coast rivers. They have been making a great comeback in recent years along the entire length of the coast and it is great to see. Had fish to 7lb 6oz in the salt in recent years (they go even harder in the sea) and seen a few much bigger. Friend of a friend had a 17lber on the fly in a small local river a few years ago, biggest Scottish east coast fish i know of.
Thanks for watching, it was a lovely fish. Never had a sea trout in the salt. Its something I'd like to do system some point. A 17lber that's a massive fish 👍
Excellent action video and some great angling skills, please correct me also, but isnt one of the differences that a Sea Trout has spots below the lateral line, when a Salmon doesn't, and historically a Sea Trout is a Brown trout, that went to sea ?
Thanks for watching and the kind comments, yes you are correct a sea trout has spot below the line when a salmon doesn't. It does become more difficult when bother are dark and in their spawning colours, for me the tail is always a giveaway, straight edged is always a trout. 👍
Nice size a good one . Ive caught a few Sea trout i yrs back now when last there in the river Earn in Perthshire and were a bar eh Silver and so much different looking than this one seen ..Fight harder than any trout ive caught in lochs i recall Also have caught Brown trout in the river Earn yrs back now. Can i ask where can a person purchase a days permit these days and prices ?
Hi thanks for watching. I wouldn't have minded a look at that one when it first came in and was silver. You can buy tickets for Crieff on Fishpal they've a lot of water. The Dunning Angling Club sells them through the local shop in Dunning I'm sure. 👍
I kinda of wonder, the two definite spots on the gill plate, has me considering if it might be a hybrid, with lowering numbers of salmon , i wonder if either precocious parr / or brown trout on the redds are doing their bit and salmon/trout hybrids might just be natures backup for seagoing stock, or its parents were a large female sea trout been watched over on the redds by smaller male salmon (or vice versa) , , maybe just the autumn colours confusing things a bit, but square tail and the two stand out gill plate spots seems to show the distinguish marks of the two in one fish . Cracking fish either way. Tight Lines for 2024 if your still throwing a line.
Hi, thanks for watching. For me, the square tail, the extended jaw and the spots below the lateral line point towards trout. I do agree the lack of fish in the rivers opens up the opportunity of hybrids. Nature will find a way.
I went there in the 60's. Caught a sea trout with every worm on a rolling ledger. Problem was I didnt have many worms !!! Only ever coarse fished befor then. I also learned is wasnt just whisky to keep you warm, but the use of a tamishante..lol
Thanks for watching, 5lb is a big sea trout. I think my biggest before that one was 4lbs and I was happy with that. Was that out of a river or the sea?
Hello, Canadian fisherman here. Is a sea trout a sea run brown trout? We have sea run rainbow trout here that we call steelhead. I was wondering if the fact that they live in salt water is the reason for the name change.
Hi Bobby it's just the local Angling Club water. It is membership only but plenty of tickets just above on the Crieff water on Fishpal. Thanks for watching. 👍
Hi thanks for watching. The fly was a Size 8 cascade if I remember correctly. That's good you've got your permit. You'll definitely get a sea trout or two. Its a great river for them, very underestimated. 👍
Good video again cracking sea trout even if been in a while haven't fished the earn in years used to fish it quite a lot back in the day had some good days on it
Always good to see a fish treated with respect even if you were disappointed with a 7lb sea trout because it wasn't a salmon. Nice to have the differences pointed out and a bit of info. Regards fly and rod line set up would have been interesting .
Hi thanks for watching my rod set up is a 15ft Loomis NRX with a Rio Long Head Spey Floater and a 5ft Airflo slow sink tip. Can't really be disappointed with your biggest sea trout ever. I've fished the river hard all year, lost a few I just thought that was it. A great specimen it was. 👍
Iain that was a cracker of a Sea Trout that is one fish I miss here in Australia although we do have a run of Sea Trout in our smaller coastal rivers outside the fishing season. Tight lines with your first Salmon on the Earn.
Hi Paul thanks for watching, I use a 15ft and 13ft Loomis NRX. Most of my videos are using my 15ft Loomis NRX and a Rio Long Head Spey Floater and a 5ft Airflo slow sink tip. I only really used shooting heads in the spring up until April.
Thanks for watching, it's a great little river, just so dependant on water like most. Up and down within a few days, doesn't hold it's height at all like it used to.
Thanks for watching, well done on the 4lber, yes it was a challenge in that strong current. Thankfully the hook held enough to put the necessary pressure on it. 👍 I'd love to go to New Zealand at some point .
Hi thanks for watching, 6 and a half pounds is a big fish, this was my biggest by a long way, I think my previous biggest was only around four. I didn't know you got sea trout in Louisiana, what types of Salmon do you get there and are there any steelhead?

Personally I do t delay my fish that long, they get stressed and I think it’s a bit unfair, if your not going to kill it, straight back is better I feel. Good fish though.
Hi thanks for watching, I respect your opinion. I have known lots of Salmon caught and tethered for a long time(hours on occassion) sent to the hatchery as brood stock and survive for years after to spawn each year. I don't think it harms them certainly not when they're in the water. I hope your enjoying the channel?
Hi thanks for watching, I don't wear a life vest. Grew up without wearing one and tend not to use one unless I have to. Can't seem to get used to them.
Very enjoyable video Iain. It’s good to see sizeable sea trout making a comeback and giving a good account of itself in heavy water
Thanks Andrew, been a few bigger ones caught off the Earn this year. Nice to see. 👍

Hi Lain,
What size and type of fly were you using? I assume it was a salmon fly as you were targeting salmon.
Cheers.
Hi, thanks for watching, it was a size 10 partridge patriot double, the tying is one of my own. A bit of a dark cascade pattern with a red butt.
Lovely sea trout, nice to see the differences in the fish explained some more…
Thanks glad you enjoyed it. I think they are mis identified at this time of year pretty often.
Great bit of footage and a cracking sea trout…..what’s a CROY ? It looked pretty dangerous wading on it !
Thanks for watching. A Croy is a row of stones out from the bank designed to direct the flow and speed up the current.
