- For as long as I can remember I’ve had this obsession with fly-fishing for trout in wild places. It all started when, as a boy of 8 or 9 years old, I first hiked up into the hills behind my village and caught gorgeous, hand-sized trout from a tiny tributary of the river Devon. These days I live in Glasgow, Scotland's largest city. Although the urban trout fishing on my doorstep is quite good (actually, it's really, really good!), I often long to escape the noise and distractions of the city.
Sutherland, in the far northwest of country, is a raw and elemental place. When fishing up here, it is almost impossible to avoid being drawn into a deeper connection with the landscape. You cast out your line and watch as the loop unfurls through billions of years of evolution. Here, the flowing river reminds you that you that everything flows, and all that exists is one. John Muir captured the sentiment perfectly when he wrote ‘when one tugs at a single thing in nature, he finds it attached to the rest of the world.’
In this short film, I travel to a secret river in a secluded valley, far from civilisation. The landscape is stunning, the trout are abundant, and even the weather manages to be quite pleasant (after a cold, misty start!)

You've summed up my brother's and my childhood in one fell swoop. We grew up in a remote part of north Wales and we're obsessed with catching trout from our wild moorland peat streams, too.
That deep love for the wide spaces and smell of the running water never leaves you. We'll be making a return this summer.

Now I have been watching these films for some time, but have not done so for a while and then today, like one of Sean’s well presented dry fly casts, I woke up from a brief doze in an empty house, it’s not normally empty but was today, and this delicate presenters “Dun” of creativity fell into the window of my vision, and I watched. And I have to say it was truly wonderful, and worthy of the professional I understand you are. It all makes sense now. That was a wonderful experience , thank you so much. One cannot explain to non fishers why the world over we do this, but your film could if you showed them. Lang may your Lum reek.

That’s perfection for me, I’m very fortunate in Caithness to have some great Loch trout fishing but would love to do more river stream fishing but up here it seems to be a luxury purely for the salmon fishers
