Hey everyone, here are a few corrections to the script that a few people have pointed out so far. I'll update the list if anything else comes up: - The texture I said was water in GTA 3 is actually a pool cover. I was 50/50 here, but as it looked different to the pool cover in Asuka's courtyard I thought it was water. It looks odd either way - Unreal Engine wasn't responsible for the cartoony visuals as other non-cartoony games were made in unreal. Roblox also doesn't use Unreal. This came from a ScreenRant article following the October trailer last year and I carried their error forward. -When I said GSGs were fighting back the cartoony visuals of Unreal I should have said "when they ported the original game into Unreal everything was too clean". Rich Rosado said this in the FTW USA Today interview I mentioned -DLSS isn't a lighting effect -This isn't really a correction, but when I was describing Tommy I said he was an "ageing gangster", not an "Asian gangster" Cheers!
Also when you speak of how much work GSG had to put into remastering the assets... you do realize someone made those assets from scratch, right? GSG had it easy and they blew it.
Rockstar is MASSIVE 1000+ devs from multiple studios. They dropped red dead , they make 2-3 dlcs for gta online a year and then the production of gta 6. I find it hard to belive they couldn't fine a hand full of competent people inhouse to do this. It just seems they wanted it done as cheap as possible to make the most profit.
Just to think they could have done each game at the 20th anniversary, kept the hype going for a few years with maximum quality control for each release. Then at the end release it all as a trilogy package. But instead they rushed it to release, these aren't even acceptable as a throwaway. If this whole package costed 10 dollars it wouldn't be the biggest deal, but they charged AAA price for this mess of a release and took away the originals from the consumer.
The worst and saddest part is they don't care about the trilogy anymore. The last patch we got was in February almost a year ago (I know there was one in October but that didn't add anything at all), so we can say the game is dead, at this point the only hope I have is on modders but even them seem not to care.
There was never a chance for this to be good and I'll explain why. The trilogy's original code on PS2 was already quite sensitive and simple, small edits could break it. The first problems arrived with the PC versions. It seems like the ports are based off old prototype builds, they then slapped some of the PS2's code on top of it along with some exclusive tweaks... needless to say, this didn't work out too well. This is why you have mods like SilentPatch that fixed a ton of issues. The Xbox ports seem to have the same problem but the dev team definitely spent much more effort to "hide" the somewhat broken source code, they also enhanced some minor stuff carefully without breaking anything further, resulting in decent ports. Some years later, Grove Street Games is given the source code of the already buggy PC ports to build mobile phone ports and they completely destroyed the games as expected because they have modified everything wrecklessly. Especially the infamous San Andreas "remaster" that was also on the PS3/360. GSG learns nothing from the past and uses the already beyond broken mobile ports as a base for DE with catastrophic results. I think it's a miracle the games run at all.
@@Manic_Panic I'd think the better Rockstar studio we thought were making this initially, or R* North themselves, wouldn't see that as unfixable issues. They should had remade all 3 games like EA had BioWare do with Mass Effect Legendary Edition, or what CDPR is planning to with the first two Witcher games.
A rule to live by, if a game still doesn't have a respectable amount of gameplay footage by the release month, 9 times out of 10, they're hiding something. Rockstar is nothing but a shell of their former selves.
@@mistabobo2020 Yes, precisely, because that was the last main title game they made so far, and they did an amazing job on it. But they haven’t released any new games since not counting releases like the definitive edition, mostly because they are milking their cash cow which is GTA online. But I guarantee you that when GTA 6 is released, it’s going to be extremely high quality.
It's no longer the Rockstar we know it's all TakeTwo the Rockstar we know from the 2000's is gone and everyone in charge during that timeframe moved on to other companies or just left ever since GTA V came out and GTA Online was started that's all they seem to care about anything that isn't GTA V is not a priority to them

What sucks is that these games were what made Rockstar the powerhouse of a company that they are today, they should’ve treated these games with more respect and actually deserve a GOOD remaster. With these games, they hold a lot of peoples childhoods and sucks they got severely downgraded compared to the originals..
@@assassin8636 I apologize, that was harsh for no reason. I think maybe they’re just trying to say people should buy more physical copies rather than relying on the digital market. When the GTA trilogy definitive edition came out they yanked the originals from the digital market. So now if you don’t own the physical copies, or don’t already own the digital ones then you’re out of luck.
@robertgrant2934 ohh I understand what you are saying and no problem we all have those moments and what you're saying at the end depends it doesn't matter physical or digital at you're enjoying a game and this isn't one of them
Stop pre-ordering and buying day 1 releases! Make these companies prove they can be trusted with that privilege. I'm staying several years behind gaming at this point. I'd prefer waiting until the guaranteed bugs are ironed out.
Pre-ordering wasn't necessarily the problem. People could clearly see the (defective) quality of this edition in the trailer. Yet they still went ahead and bought it, expecting... something. Gaming community's standards is what needs to be raised here.
The thing that annoys me as well is how poor the weather effects are compared to the original and how in SA, each location no longer has its own climate. It's taken away the character of each place.
@@lucifer-ic9th Finally someone said it! It's not just the draw distance, that makes it look bad! It's the lack of bad weather conditions, that makes all those cities look immersive and realistic! So when they got strip of all those fog and stuff off course looking at the map in long distance would make it fill weird!...
I hate that they are all the same color. Vice city was very orange and blue. 3 was gritty and Grey. SA was vibrant and humid. It gave each game a unique character
What do you expect from a company that has a main product that is a live service game with micro transactions? Rockstar are basically a mobile developer cosplaying as Rockstar
There is a mod called "real traffic" for the original trilogy which makes appropriate cars spawn in appropriate locations plus makes the cars slow down when they turn or change lanes.
Don't vehicles usually spawn in appropriate places in at least the OG San Andreas? Like how you'll see rusty tractors driving round the countryside, but never in Los Santos?
Solo game dev side note: Unreal Engine 4 is NOT a cartoony game engine. It is capable of realism, I would even argue better than RAGE. It is a deliberate choice made by the team at some point to go for cartoony characters and color palette. Unreal Engine is capable of so much more...
That is 100% true could not agree with you more And I'm hoping that They will actually Give all of us that paid for the game .. On xbox or playstation, pc.. The photo realistic version that it deserves.. Because truthfully They literally can do a graphic mod on top of this that they've done.. Perfect example Look at the assassin's creed remasters They did an amazing job Whoever remastered those And honestly That's what I was expecting. Because again this game Was what they claimed a remaster and not a Remake
how tf is UE better than RAGE lol, if the devs went for hyper realistic shit it wouldn't work with the previous games being ported from renderware with its old scripts, animations and whatnot, are you really a game dev to make such an ignorant statement lol
@@jessenthebenezer I would have to respectively disagree I've done a lot of research And I have friends That are game devs And even right now there is a simple software.. That could rerender The game through A.I. And make it a real remaster With unreal engine And our Rage .. I truly believe Even with talking to my friend That has literally made Development mods For This game And he uploads them on UA-cam .. We both believe that it was Pretty much what the Majority of the community is thinking.. It was about money.. Due to the fact that they Made it to reach so many different devices and they started off From my research With the little devices Was the benchmark are the beginning of the creation of the remasters .. And if you think about statistics and probability.. From a business standpoint .. I'm gonna go old school here.. Imagine a Game Boy is really popular in trending Receiving massive sales And that's the main audience that the company wants to attract to get a lot of money from And so the original development remaster Starts there And then they tried to Use all that same information and code Ports etc. For xbox or playstation or pc or Just anything Else that's more advanced It just aint gonna turn out right .. To me personally I wish they would have Simply used An 8K high resolution detail pack with the Ai that they did use on a PC to rerender the game than downscale if need be to 4k 60 or even 30 if they needed to correct issues and bugs.. the fact of the Matter is they had no head room to work with... And if They were able to actually Remaster the game With true native 4K Looking like red dead redemption 2.. We would be looking at Easily 200GB And that cost money.. the dev's or rockstar was like na we on a time frame we need money now .. And honestly just what really upsets me Is it actually seems like There was no video game tester .. Like I swear if I was in there and I was testing the game as soon as I opened up any of them games I would a told rock star hell no.. This will be a disrespect to the community .. If they were smart what they should have done Is rerendered.. Remastered.. The game to look like red dead redemption 2 Or better.. And linked it With grand theft auto online And boom Would have been a massive success 😁💯👍
I also turned my head and checked the comments to see if anyone else noticed that. If someone making a video on the history and some technical aspects of the collection made such a basic mistake in understanding how game engines work, I would not hold the rest of the video with much respect
A better option for the GTA trilogy would have to make a 20 year anniversary edition of each game. Like release only GTA 3 remaster in 2021, GTA Vice City in 2022 and then the anticipated and potentially hyped, GTA San Andreas in 2024. Like this, the massive crunch on the small developers would have been much lessened.
That would still leave each game with a year, or for san andreas 2 years, of game development. Sure, they could keep be working on future games slowely while they make the main game, but that would still be too demanding for a small dev team.
There are alot of things i can forgive about the definitive edition. One thing i cant forgive is the absence of the original soundtrack. Its such a core part of why i love these games. I get music licenses expire. But as you pointed out...Rockstar/TakeTwo is one of the biggest gaming companies out there. They CAN afford it. It just wasnt worth it to them because this is supposed to be a cheap cash grab.
Rockstar Games is run by CEO's and shareholders. It's ONLY about profits and numbers for these people. They sold well, but people will be more cautious towards Rockstar Games. Hopefully GTA 6 can deliver something fresh to the series.
GTA Online gets so much money yearly. It is ridiculous to think a giant like TakeTwo wouldn't pay for a license for all those songs. But it makes sense if you think like a CEO wanting to make 3 games for as cheap as possible.
I was working for R* at the time and the fact that 99% of the problems that we reported as QA went unfixed, baffles me to this day. At the time I thought "surely, this invisible bridge bug that I escalated numerous times will never make it to release?". But the fact is there were 1000s of bugs unfixed in the database, if it wasn't a 100% reproducible crash the bug wasn't getting fixed. At best the external devs hoped it would fix itself, after small performance optimisations. So both R* and the external dev studio are to blame.
@@StrangeASMR33 And yet, explicably in the fact of advancements in technology and game development production pipelines, my PS2 copy of the GTA trilogy has aged like wine. Sure, it's standard resolution, clunky controls and 30 fps. But it's exactly how I remember, has all the music and was made by dev team that cared.
44:21 just to make a correction: that is actually a pool cover in original game, so i suppose it is also a pool cover in DE. In both Asukas apartament and apartament nextdoor, there are these pools with covers, but only Asukas has few lounge chairs. Still, it looks way too much saturated and cartoony for III, completely on point with your in-video explanation.
I also always knew it was a pool cover, but in the original it was so much more obvious. In the DE it looks like blue cement that they filled the pool with before it dried.
Unbelievable work here man! Watched beginning to end and you didn't lose my attention once which shows how good of a job you did scripting everything out and pacing it all right. Subbed
It's so sad to see how Corporate Greed turned a project, which might have been something nice for the fans into such a huge disappointment. I can't believe that there are still so many issues - even after one year. Anyway, thank you so much for your deep and well done analysis! :)
They're called TakeTwo for a reason. They don't just continuously take your money, but also any decent expectations for what you get to pay for as well.
They did us, the fans, so damn dirty. I had such high hopes. If it was too much for them they should've just released one at a time with the updated graphics and specs
This company has so much money they could of made these games in like GTA 5 graphics at least and already made GTA 5 into red dead 2 graphics haha with ease..... Lol sad stuff all of these billion dollar companies dam shame.....
There were a few misunderstandings about game engine workings in the video, but the point was solid. I'm sad to see the games get borderline abandoned. :(
@@randomgayguyman Character models looking too cartoony (15:00) has nothing to do with the engine. You can import whatever models and textures you want. Saying an engine is somehow predisposed to produce cartoony-looking assets is like saying a certain paintbrush can only be used for abstract art.
@@randomgayguyman so if your point to defend the Definitive Edition, be genuinely curious about what the incorrect descriptions of engines are, or to attack everyone's vocabulary for the sake of it?
The only thing that should have been said about this in my opinion is that war-drum Studios aka Grove Street Games should not have been the choice to even touch these games considering what they did to the mobile ports and the HD remasters on the 360 and the PS3
39:28 again, the cartoony visuals are not an engine issue. They were a deliberate choice by GSG (most likely stemming from lack of skill and manpower from their art department)
Yeah, glad you pointed that out, was irking me a bit how often hed say it. The engine has no bearing on what kind of artstyle you model your 3d assets after. I mean, Unreal Engine was used to make Batman Arkham Knight for example. Doubt hed call that cartoony.
@Johan UE4 can look fucking incredible and unique with the right developers, but most devs just use the same standard built in UE4 dynamic lighting engine and physics engine that give everything that horrific poor contrast and bloom that make shit blinding when looking toward the sun. It's the same thing with noticing texture pop-in on character clothing and hair & cloth simulations freaking out and flicking around when programmed camera changes happen to cutscenes (a massive widespread issue of last & current gen, you'll see it constantly in stuff like Avengers, Forza, Cyberpunk, Witcher 3, CoD, Spider-Man, Arkham Knight, Battlefield, Halo etc because devs like to just jam UE into their existing game code or modify it to use for small parts like texture & model streaming while the Frostbite, Slipspace or whatever other proprietary game engine handles the base functions. It's become a crutch for lazy or incompetent crunching devs to just hand Epic the licensing fee and not present their staff with enough time and training to really use the full power of the engine and to ensure full compatibility and optimisation.
@@Whiteythereaper None of the games you listed except Arkham Knight use Unreal. I have no idea what kind of schizo rant you went on about here. UE has nothing to do with pop-in and janky physics.
The saddest thing to me is that for many younger players and future generations who never played the original versions this will be their first experience of these classic games. And quite possibly also their last if they're not willing to involve themselves in retro game collecting, emulation or piracy.
You can still play San Andreas' Xbox 360 version if you buy the original Xbox disc and use it on Xbox One/Series X. It acts as a physical version key of the HD version and downloads that version from the store. Besides that all 3 originals are easy to play on an Xbox 360 since they're backwards compatible on there. I know that's a less common situation but it's a good way to experience the better versions
@@Whiteythereaper I generally just play them on PC via my Steam account, I own them all on the PS2 but I don't like having to bother with getting the PS2 out of the closet, dusting it off, plugging it all in, finding the game, then praying to god that the disc isn't scratched. I think PC gaming just ruined me honestly, haven't bought an actual disc in over a decade and see no point when the games that are on my wishlist regularly go on sale for $5 or less.
For anyone that's wondering what the Intro song is called (0:20 - 0:40): It's GTA III - 10th Anniversary Trailer **O Mio Babbino Caro (Remix by Hudson Mohawke)
I think there was a missed opportunity to somewhat streamline Catalina's model in both 3 and SA. the difference between their two models in each game was always jarring, and they should've taken the opportunity to either go with the 3 look (my personal preferred model for her) or the SA look, but instead they made the differences much more pronounced.
Agree with everything here, except the fact that Tont Hawk's Pro Skater is a basically a remake, as in its obviously running on a new engine and code in comparison to the original PlayStation version. The problem with the trilogy is that they simply ported over the old code from the early 2000s and didn't improve it whatsoever, alluding to what you've mentioned how everything feels out of place and wrong.
Actually it's much worse, Rockstar Games essentially sent over the entire project to Grove Street Games. If you don't know, they took the PS2 version and ported it into a mobile version, then took the mobile version and ported that code to the new consoles. I don't understand how R* could be so negligent, but this is the unfortunate reality.
@A that's what I fucking hated about the Xbox 360 port of San Andreas, it was clearly the fucking iPad/Fire version to the point that the camera in planes didn't point where the nose pointed, it was locked forwards to the horizon to prevent issues with the touchscreen controls going off-kilter. The cars had weird gravity physics that would make them constantly bounce slightly until eventually it stops you in your tracks. Edit: I also forgot the Radio, you can't listen to the full audio track for any station because it bugs out and resets at a certain point, meaning some songs aren't normally hearable outside of shops and other scenarios
Pro Skater is a beautifully remade game by a larger studio with AAA games and experience under their belt. That being said it also helps that it's a very small game in scope, there's so much less to it so it can be polished really well, and most of the maps had already been remastered for Xbox 360 by Robomodo so they just needed new textures and lighting. Either way, Activision gave Vicarious Visions the time and money to polish the ever loving fuck out of THPS1+2 just like they did with the Crash Bandicoot trilogy and I absolutely believe they have a plans for at least a THPS 3 remake in the future, dependent on just how much of the studio is contracted to working on Warzone & CoD assets.
@@Whiteythereaper Don't get your hopes up Tony Hawk himself said on a live stream they had 3+4 planned and they cancelled it and It's been in tons of news that Vicarious Visions and Toys for Bob were merged into the Call of Duty team so both modern Crash devs got absorbed into the COD machine and any chance at a 3+4 remake went out the window with them.
Just wanna comment and say: great job, man! This was a great video, well-structured, entertaining, a really easy watch! Keep up the good work. Hope to see some more of your takes on the development, release and ‘fixing’ (or not in this case) of games.
@@TwinSticksReviews the original Destroy all Humans 2 and Saints Row 2 only had frame rate problems when you got max police alert in both games apart from this they were playable
In this case I think the audio was more of a problem. They didn't have the original audio recordings (from the voice actors etc) anymore so there was no option but to cut it into pieces and maybe use some audio filters. It's like all these tasks, even though bound to never be as good as the original, could have been completed much better with more time, but it was all so rushed which made it 10x worse.
A correction at about 17:30, there were a large number of Rockstar employees who worked on the project, and Technicolor also worked on it. If you look at the credits for the remasters, there's a 2 minute long addendum after the original game's credits with all of the new staff. Edit - It also seems that Rockstar themselves took over development of the patches, with GSG working on the Ark series.
@@lostingame2193 Honestly GSG has done some decent work recently with their Ark port for the Switch being way better than the infamous original version. It seems that with the right management and amount of work, they can do good work.
@@LakoIsFun it seems to me like they didn't even really screw up the definitive edition in hindsight, it was just a monumentous task that they did to the best of their ability and there were some cracks slipped or things broke unknowingly
Thanks for your in depth breakdown of the trilogy. You clearly care a lot about these games... and so do I. I was tempted to buy it on Steam now it's on sale, but you just saved me a whole lot of frustration. It really hurts they made such a mess out of this :(
I bought it recently off steam and havent encountered any issues or bugs as of late. So i think by now the remasters have been fixed. Minus the obvious odd/weird rebuffing of the old grafx instead of overhauling the grqfx all together, they run smoothly for me.
I think I'm going to get it soon. It's half the price now at $30. I played all 3 of the trilogy back in the day. I had never really loved GTA3, so I doubt I will now. I loved Vice City & San Andreas. I don't feel as if I would be as critical about the games as others are. I don't play for nostalgia & how the games were back then, I play because I loved all the GTA games (other than GTA3 & 5). I'm getting back into RDR games right now, just waiting for a gaming monitor & headphones that will be here in a couple days. Can't wait.
21:27 little correct here. The footage used doesn't show a bug at all. The save icon disappears because at this point in the game Cesar calls you to tell about Smoke moving drugs across San Andreas. When that happens you automatically accept the missing putting you on "mission mode" and in the process disables saves. This is intended and happens in all versions from PS2 to Definitive.
I was one of those people who missed out on these games as I didn’t own a console in time so when I heard this was an upcoming title, I was excited to finally get to play through these timeless pieces. Heartbreaking to see it’s a shallow reflection of the originals….
22:20 This is not a "bug" since it is always like this in the original version, me and brothers were always cracking up together at CJ's face when we were playing at our PS 2 back in 2006.
In a weird way, having to rely on a map and not having a waypoint was kinda fun. It was like real life during that time where you actually had to either memorize the route or look at a map. I guess I can see both sides of the argument.
I recently started another playthrough of GTA 4 and realized I don't really know the map despite completing the game multiple times, unlike the trilogy where I can practically play blindfolded. Then I realized it was because of the GPS system. I never bothered to learn because I just followed the trail. After turning it off in the options menu I noticed I was learning the map very very quickly and it was a lot more enjoyable because I got to notice a lot more details not looking into the HUD all the time
@@SarukiLIAS Yeah, and GTA games made since GPS became common have it. In 2001 when GTA 3 dropped and when the game takes place, it wasn't even close to in common use.
I agree, if this game was given to a bigger studio with a bigger budget, then it would've been decent, but nope, they gave it to a small studio just to save money. Ik GSG could've done put in as much as effort as modders, but still, it should've been in-house.
Did you know the upper management of any games company actually thinks gamers are a bunch of losers and that's the reason they don't want to be making good games? They don't respect the product, they don't respect the customers. The only reason they're even hired is because they look and sound corporate. And guess what? Gamers prove them right every single day. People will happily drink the piss of rockstar that comes out of rockstars drain and will even pay for it ( and defend it by saying "don't tell me what to do" "you do you" or some retarded shit like that ). The only thing consumers have is numbers but when there's consumers are so divided among themselves, you don't even have that advantage. This only makes them disrespect you even more and the shittier games become. I mean what you gonna do? Cry about it on UA-cam? The best thing about this trilogy is that it healed me. I have since and will never pre-buy a game again. That alone should advertise this trilogy. It is clear that it is poor advertising but an honest one.
How did Rockstar not get sued for false advertising, they promoted the game as if it was completely done in house by their devs, they used their good track record to trick people into paying for a product not actually made by them.
It's funny you should mention the GPS. On one hand it was really annoying having to constantly look at the map, but on the other hand, it forced you to really learn the map and be able to navigate by landmarks. You had to really pay attention to the world, instead of focusing so much on the minimap telling you where to go. I'm not sure how well it would work with massive games like GTA V, though.
In GTAO you can really notice the effect of the GPS. A lot of people - despite having a lot experience - drive like headless chickens only following the purple/yellow line even though there are obvious shortcuts you should have learned after 500 hours of playing the game. Sometimes this is even detrimental, because the GPS may lead you to the wrong location, ie. a bridge above the objective (which you can sometimes see even from far away if you know where the roads are going). Of course it helps new players get around the map faster without much hassle and thus is a really good feature to have, but blindly relying on it can be quite a problem in the long run.
I have too much going on in my life and too much other shit to remember to devote time and space to remembering a video game map. I mean for f sake it is just a video game that exists for my entertainment.
its hard to find anyone else that likes the game, everyone else says gta v was better but its probably a skill gap thing, they had to be the ones getting gun down by me and the other pilots so they never got to have fun in gta 4. but then again we were only in free aim servers.

@@myjobsucks Gaming as it was in the past is completely dead. To create a new game any where near triple A standard is extremely expensive and is a huge risk. Unfinished games accompanied by battle passes and DLC are the norm. Games are hardly ever released as a full package. Modern gaming is completely different to the past. Gaming is dead. It's about building an addiction nowadays, especially with things like skill based match matching. It's not about the experience whatsoever. There are of course indie titles. Love the video, but I recommend making more drafts of the script in future. There's a lot of instances of repeating yourself, or saying the same thing but in a different way. It can be difficult to listen to. Other than that this video was great, and I've subbed.
Agreed. It suffers from UA-cam disease of not being cut down as tight as possible like genuine entertainment content would be. Most channels suffer from longing everything out and making hour long 15 minutes of content videos.
I agree with almost every point in this video, however, I think the choice to use identical music for good and bad dates was a stroke of unintended genius, romantic music playing over a date going wrong is the most ironically funny thing in the entire “remake”
I'm surprised you didn't mention the Police Maverick in Vice City that constantly changes colors every time it spawns instead of having the regular green, but I guess that's just the tip of the iceberg. I also remember the Jetpack controls in San Andreas being completely fucking broken playing with a controller on PC. Fantastic video, great work

Honestly dude, unless you wanna go for console experience I'm pretty sure there are other ways of finding this version for PC ;) you can find versions with a no CD crack so you dont have to have the disk running to start the game like I have to
I was looking at this in a shop just yesterday for £20. I was considering getting it but I'm glad I watched your video first. You saved me some cash and I just played gta5 instead.
Honestly the worst thing to come from the trilogy remake is the fact that rockstar removed the originals off steam. So if you want a steam version you are now forced to purchase an overpriced demaking of the games
I wish I never spent my money pre ordering the trilogy. As a kid l remember telling myself Rockstar will never do any wrong, just to grow up and they became the very same company they mocked on radio stations it’s sad Rockstar preyed upon their most loyal fanbase targeting our nostalgia
I’ve played the three games back to back recently. It’s astonishing how little they did to improve on the games. Yes, I think the gameplay feels nicer on 3 and VC, especially since you can restart missions in an instant. San Andreas though feels so rough and it’s actually worse at times. The RC plane mission? A total pain. At least we have checkpoints now. Btw I found no game breaking bug yet. I guess I’m lucky
Dudes, like a month after the release of the Trilogy the GTA VC could NOT be completed because one of Phil's missions were bugged. Essentially a modder fixed it with a mod for the folk on the PC while the actual devs took ages to do so. In other words, you could not beat the Trilogy for months if you did not mod it.
Rockstar games did less work on their legacy remasters than Bethesda and CDPR did with their buggy and disliked games at launch. 76 is now mostly positive on steam and had support throughout the years. Cyberpunk had a whole redemption arc over the course of 2 years. It’s hard to believe how little Rockstar cares about the trilogy that put them on the map.
I'm not even a GTA fan and I STILL feel insulted. These games are classics beloved by millions and they spit on them to try and wring out every last drop of cash.
And the saddest thing is, that if they had put the proper effort into these games, they probably would have made more money then this defective edition did.
I am surprised how small your channel still is. With the quality in the narration and editing and length, I assumed this is another 100k channel... but it's not! Everyone subscribe, we need more of this stuff. Excellent work.
The pool texture in GTA III is supposed to be a pool cover, which it does look like a tarp-like texture. The issue is that in the original game, the tarp was clearly modeled on top of the pool. This just looks like the water froze into a solid block of ice.
the worst part is that day 1 someone made a fix for one of the broken missions in vice city and it took rockstar almost a month to do anything about that
My PS2 still works mostly fine, I have a bootleg copy of San Andreas that rarely crashes and a legit version of Vice City. Glad to know this is about as much as it still takes to play both games 😂😂😂
That's what has been my argument after seeing that this "Definitive " edition is such a shite show. Buy a ps2 and the 3 games and play them the way they were meant to be played. This abomination isn't what made Rockstar.
Considering they actually had a feasible example on how you could handle a remaster: just take a look at the xbox version of GTA: III done by Rockstar Vienna. If they did just that & stuck with renderware it'd have been enough. Possibly add some QoL improvements found in San Andreas (like the rotating camera with right stick).
Thank you for uploading this, the game is on sale and many players including myself will be tempted thinking it’s been fixed, still kind of want to buy it but I feel bad giving companies like this money.
The protagonists' new faces remind me of those experiments where they have photoshoppers in various countries try to make a portrait prettier, and you get an idea of how beauty standards vary from culture to culture. Tommy, Claude and CJ look like really handsome Indian guys.
And now I'm imagining the trilogy as a Bollywood musical. Smoke (flamboyant dancing on the back of a dirt bike): "All you had to do was follow the train, CJ!" Backup dancers: "Mission Failed!" CJ: Does a sad dance while a sitar solo plays.

Tbh in my opinion the original version of gta san andreas is still better then the new trilogy. Graphics with as well conaidering all the mods out there that remasters the game so much better! Great video dude! :)
I just want to crisp up the old graphics to be honest, the artstyle sells it allready. When i saw the new draw distance in sa i just imagined how could would it look in the older games if they would have had the tech for it back then. They would have put clouds on mount chilliad and birds flying around in the distance, san fiero bay is covered in these cozy 2Dfx clouds. Love can make even the high draw distance beatiful but the passion was lost with the DE.
Except I faced dozens of crashes, instability and performance issues. I tried all I could .. DE is just so much better for me. And the gameplay itself feels somewhat better with the checkpoints, autosaving etc. Only thing that ruins it for me is that they removed lots of soundtrack which is something we all remember and love.
@C no thanks, I like playing games on the comfort of my giant sofa watching my 70" TV screen with a controller in my hand I can carry about the living room. PC gaming is mom's basement stuff sat a keyboard on a cold wooden desk on an uncomfortable office chair that swivels around annoyingly. I'll just avoid buying this and wait for gta 6 on my ps5

The fact that they lost the original assets and yet went and continue going mercilessly after modders hard work says everything you need to know about Rockstar's management. These people are not your friends. Companies are not your friends, don't buy or just pirate all Rockstar products, companies of this attitude shouldn't exist at all
Great video! I think you hit the nail on the head with the GPS, the player was encouraged to memorize their surroundings in the original trilogy. I remember this being a huge plus when years later I would bond with people I just met having realized we share a love for these games and know each and every nook and cranny. With the first step into the HD era with GTA IV, I do see how the developers would think the introduction of far more complex maps justified the GPS system. The original trilogy maps on the other hand were the perfect size where at first they would seem a little overwhelming (especially back then) but quickly become recognizable. Because you had a destination point and no wayfinder, that meant you had to observe for key locations and landmarks which aided in learning the map. At the time of GTA III this also blew my 8 y/o mind with what seemed to me like 'real life' detail. I think it may have been Rockstar's way of getting the player to appreciate the work that went into the games back then. The games were so rich in witty billboards, posters and of course playing off of real world locations so of course Rockstar would want a way to proudly display their dominance over the competition back then!
Great video mate! I’ve been contemplating picking it up for Vice City alone as it’s only 20 quid for a physical copy at the moment. After seeing your video? Cheers for saving me 20 quid.
On switch i would try it. Console version sucks but its really not many bugs on switch at this point. Ive been expecting videos to address this but i guess how bad the console versions are overshines it. Imo these little games (compared to 5) play way better om switch anyway
Appreciate the huge work that went into the video but the cartoony visuals are not caused by the engine. That is a ridiculous statement although it pains me to write it for how much good you did otherwise with the video.
I got Vice City's definitive edition for PS5 with one of the members. And I hadn't heard about it before, so I thought it was just gonna be like the original. When I went to drive and could not find Billie Jean on the radio, I was instantly pissed! I got the trilogy on Xbox and I'm praying I don't feel like wasted $10. Great video by the way!
I would never have thought that Rockstar would release something so subpar, they have always been the poster boy of quality videogames. With Dan Houser and Lazlow's departure from from R* in 2020, I think it is the end of the company as we knew it - the cracks are already beginning to show.
Biggest bug I ran into was the many bridges in the countryside not having physics so there were parts of the San Andreas races that I had to just ramp the car over the river. Also a few places where I got auto save bugs and had to lose a large amount of progress to continue the game. All in all I enjoyed it but there were a few things that were horrendous like the rain and the LOD.
One more welcome "improvement" is the use of parallax interior spaces instead of pasting a flat 2d texture on a building. But even then they screwed that up by having interiors that don't belong. I saw a hospital with a clothes shop inside, and I think Ryder's house was all kitchens.
Yeah, you know why they got rid of the previous versions of the games? So that you wouldn't know that modders blew their crappy little touch up out of the water 10 years ago. It was a nostalgia cash grab pure and simple. They slapped a couple subpar mods on it and sold it as the "Definitive" edition. I myself did a better job of remastering all three 5 plus years before they were even talking about this.
Companies get bought and sold and restructured and moved headquarters here and there. It's not as simple as that, especially given that preserving source code is a relatively new practice in tech as a whole.
It's so sad that not only the pc/console edition but the mobile, netflix edition has still all the bugs, freezes laggs and is heating up my phone to the limit
Hey everyone, here are a few corrections to the script that a few people have pointed out so far. I'll update the list if anything else comes up:
- The texture I said was water in GTA 3 is actually a pool cover. I was 50/50 here, but as it looked different to the pool cover in Asuka's courtyard I thought it was water. It looks odd either way
- Unreal Engine wasn't responsible for the cartoony visuals as other non-cartoony games were made in unreal. Roblox also doesn't use Unreal. This came from a ScreenRant article following the October trailer last year and I carried their error forward.
-When I said GSGs were fighting back the cartoony visuals of Unreal I should have said "when they ported the original game into Unreal everything was too clean". Rich Rosado said this in the FTW USA Today interview I mentioned
-DLSS isn't a lighting effect
-This isn't really a correction, but when I was describing Tommy I said he was an "ageing gangster", not an "Asian gangster"
Cheers!
The original GTA trilogy doesn't use baked lighting, it uses dynamic lighting same as the remaster.
Also when you speak of how much work GSG had to put into remastering the assets... you do realize someone made those assets from scratch, right? GSG had it easy and they blew it.
Don't make people turn down your video just because you want to get attention. Sad
This a classic case of it it's not broke don't fix it
33:20 DLSS isnt modern lighting it's NVidia's upscaler

I'd call the trilogy dead in terms of support if no major patch is included across all platforms when this gets released on Steam
For anyone that's wondering what the Intro song is called (0:20 - 0:40):
It's GTA III - 10th Anniversary Trailer **O Mio Babbino Caro (Remix by Hudson Mohawke)
I really thought they would have tied the three games together better with what they shared.
No. They didn’t even do that.

Are you talking about their remasters or their OG games?
GTA San Andreas had a dynamic radio. Taking out songs probably broke it but it's likely Groove Street wouldn't know how to code it.
GTA San Andreases code was pretty messy to be fair
In this case I think the audio was more of a problem. They didn't have the original audio recordings (from the voice actors etc) anymore so there was no option but to cut it into pieces and maybe use some audio filters.
It's like all these tasks, even though bound to never be as good as the original, could have been completed much better with more time, but it was all so rushed which made it 10x worse.
Grove Street Games had absolutely zero reason to be the ones doing the definitive editons they couldnt even do the mobile ones well
A correction at about 17:30, there were a large number of Rockstar employees who worked on the project, and Technicolor also worked on it. If you look at the credits for the remasters, there's a 2 minute long addendum after the original game's credits with all of the new staff.
Edit - It also seems that Rockstar themselves took over development of the patches, with GSG working on the Ark series.
GSG shouldn't even be making any games at all for this fucking flop had me thinking Bethesda worked on this hoe since it crashed as much as fallout 4
@@lostingame2193 Honestly GSG has done some decent work recently with their Ark port for the Switch being way better than the infamous original version. It seems that with the right management and amount of work, they can do good work.

Can't wait.
just pirate the game, do not give r* your money
22:20
This is not a "bug" since it is always like this in the original version, me and brothers were always cracking up together at CJ's face when we were playing at our PS 2 back in 2006.
No it's still a bug just from the original game which is still unacceptable
In a weird way, having to rely on a map and not having a waypoint was kinda fun. It was like real life during that time where you actually had to either memorize the route or look at a map. I guess I can see both sides of the argument.
just follow the direction of the point on map
I my latest Zelda BOTW play I refused to use fast travel. I got so much more fun out of it by knowing the world.
I recently started another playthrough of GTA 4 and realized I don't really know the map despite completing the game multiple times, unlike the trilogy where I can practically play blindfolded. Then I realized it was because of the GPS system. I never bothered to learn because I just followed the trail. After turning it off in the options menu I noticed I was learning the map very very quickly and it was a lot more enjoyable because I got to notice a lot more details not looking into the HUD all the time
Well real life has gps now
@@SarukiLIAS Yeah, and GTA games made since GPS became common have it. In 2001 when GTA 3 dropped and when the game takes place, it wasn't even close to in common use.
The amount of work you put into this is insane. If only certain game studios took such care in what they put out.
I agree, if this game was given to a bigger studio with a bigger budget, then it would've been decent, but nope, they gave it to a small studio just to save money. Ik GSG could've done put in as much as effort as modders, but still, it should've been in-house.
I don't have a PC yet, but I'm gonna try it when it comes out on Android.
If you don't believe me, take a look at the ceos and upper management of any game company. They're gamblers, stock brokers, some of them downright criminals ( hi zeni ) and none of them ( absolutely not a single one of them ) are even gamers

Dude put more effort in this video than Rockstar did in the definitive edition
I just can't get over the fact that they removed Billie Jean from Vice City…
The best thing about this trilogy is that it healed me. I have since and will never pre-buy a game again. That alone should advertise this trilogy. It is clear that it is poor advertising but an honest one.
My favorite feature from the whole Trilogy is that checkpoints and markers emit actual light.
How did Rockstar not get sued for false advertising, they promoted the game as if it was completely done in house by their devs, they used their good track record to trick people into paying for a product not actually made by them.
Holy youtube lobbed a gem into my recommended. This video is amazing and you deserve to blow up.

@@randomgayguyman How dramatic.
But the scope of these titles is usually quite limited. So yes, gaming is very much dead, compared to what it used to be.
@@randomgayguyman I have been gaming for 30 years at this point. My experience and relationship with games has changed but for the better. The medium has improved significantly in those 30 years. To be fair, small kids tend to hate old stuff just cuz its old. But to be honest, this remastee should look modern, which it doesn't.

These could have been an attractive opportunity to introduce younger audiences to the "retro games" of GTA and their legacy or alternatively let people like me relive old memories with a fresh coat of paint, especially Vice City with new lighting. I sincerely hope they get patched up to a modern standard sometime, I really do.

In other words, you could not beat the Trilogy for months if you did not mod it.
being able to play the game is worth mentioning now? its literally the bare minimum.
It's trilogy's fault
I ain't subbing. This guy contradicted himself at times. He praised the quality of life changes that were made and then cried that the changes exist.
The pool texture in GTA III is supposed to be a pool cover, which it does look like a tarp-like texture. The issue is that in the original game, the tarp was clearly modeled on top of the pool. This just looks like the water froze into a solid block of ice.
GTA V only being in development for three years was a real surprise for me
Me too
They used to be good at making games.
GTA v wasn't even that good on launch. Poorly written and polish on the initial releases. Not nearly as detailed and loved as IV was.
the worst part is that day 1 someone made a fix for one of the broken missions in vice city and it took rockstar almost a month to do anything about that
My PS2 still works mostly fine, I have a bootleg copy of San Andreas that rarely crashes and a legit version of Vice City. Glad to know this is about as much as it still takes to play both games 😂😂😂
That's what has been my argument after seeing that this "Definitive " edition is such a shite show.
Buy a ps2 and the 3 games and play them the way they were meant to be played. This abomination isn't what made Rockstar.
So in other words..........................you don't like it. I get it. I think it's even worse that they got rid of the original versions.
I never had an issue with GTA 3 not having an in game map. It was like real life back then, learn the roads or check your trusty paper map.
I memorized the map
Very well put together, amazing content!

I'm glad I held off on buying this today. The bugs you've pointed out would have ruined the experience for me. I'll just stick with the memories.

How’s your experience so far with GTA:SA on Xbox? I’m thinking about getting it for 15$ but from what I’m seeing, I rather put my 15$ somewhere else.
I would never have thought that Rockstar would release something so subpar, they have always been the poster boy of quality videogames. With Dan Houser and Lazlow's departure from from R* in 2020, I think it is the end of the company as we knew it - the cracks are already beginning to show.
No joke, that Turtle Tumble part had me good
The way you can swap back to OG visuals in Diablo 2 remaster is perfect idea for the gta games
Awesome video mate! The best in depth look at the Trilogy I've seen on here!
i've always wondered why studios keeping game content seems so hard, wouldnt they just need to toss the info on some drives and lock em away?
