  • The Morningstar MC6 Pro is a very powerful midi controller that can control guitar pedals, DAWs, racks, synths and more. In this review, we will try to determine if the MC6 Pro can earn its crown as best midi controller. I will also quickly compare it with the Morningstar MC6 and the Morningstar MC8.
    Should you fit the Morningstar MC6 Pro in your guitar pedalboard, or not?

    Thanks for the great video Ale. I was hanging out for the follow-up comparison video, but I couldn't wait and ended up buying the MC6 Pro haha. I'm loving it so far, but I can definitely agree with your feedback about the display viewing angle.

      Oh boy that follow-up comparison video is taking me ages, indeed 😁It is nearly done finally, though! It'll be dense!
      I think you made an excellent choice with your MC6 Pro... as it will come out from the comparison video, the "best" device really depends on its user application... but the Pro is a very complete and powerful device that we could only dream of until a few years ago... so I can only wish you to make some great music with it... and stay tuned if you're still interested in seeing how it eventually compares with similar beasts ;)
      Thanks for passing by ;)

    Great review! This pedal will be very helpful in conjunction with the Boss ES-5. One for my loops and one for my MIDI into a GT1000Core. Having this much flexibility to reroute pedal order via loops, condituonally trigger a pedal off of another pedal, etc...allows one more way to keep from needing to access and beat up expensive/valuable pedals.
    I remember 25 years ago went I went to college for electronics, that becoming an expert in this kind of technology was only useful in engineering environments. Now, these programming skillsets that musicians use daily are transferable for use as control engineers without the need for a formal education.
    It's an amazing time to be on the cusp of advanced technology trickling to the world of musicians and audio engineers. Good stuff!

      Thanks! The Boss ES5 has been in my radar for a while, but I do not use pedals currently, just DAW, multi FX and amp primarily, so I need to find a good excuse to buy it :)
      The Disaster Area DPC-5 is also another interesting alternative.
      I do agree, the programming and guitar strumming worlds have eventually met, for good and for bad... sometimes I wish things could be simpler, but hey ho!
      Thanks so much for passing by ;)

    Thank you for doing this. I’m looking forward to your comparison video. As it stands, I think I’ll keep my MC8. To me, it’s easier to read and understand where you are. But I have not seen the MC6 pro in person.

    • @AleSuggests

      Thanks! Just to clear things up... thanks to the colours, bigger font size and images, I find the MC6 Pro easier to read when it comes to preset names. It's only when I enter the editing mode that I find the MC8 so much easier to read and a breeze to edit.
      Also, there are different versions of the MC8, I currently own the black text over white display, I don't know how the other version (white text over black background) is in terms of visibility.
      Thanks for passing by :)

    7:40 .. that's the bit I was looking for. Great review. You hit on everything, but I love my mc8, if the display was better, I'd pay for the upgrade. Loved how you showed it all and talked about using color scheme, but .. think I'll hold off. If I didn't have the mc8 I'd get this instead, but the thought of moving over for a small upgrade in the display rather than the big one I would have done all the work for

    • @AleSuggests
      @AleSuggests  Рік тому

      Thank you! :) Just to clear things up... thanks to the colours, bigger font size and images, I find the MC6 Pro quite a lot easier to read when it comes to preset names. The bottom strips and the dimmed colours of the MC6 Pro will help to understand if the presets are toggled on or off, rather than having the biking labels like the MC8. It's only when I enter the editing mode that I find the MC8 much more readable and a breeze to edit... and the MC6 Pro on-board editing almost useless. Also, the other difficult bit to read on the MC6 Pro is the bank name, the rest is fine.
      To summarise:
      - Presets read & normal use: MC6 Pro best by far
      - Preset editing: MC8 best by far
      - Bank name: bad on both
      I will make another video soon, and I will showcase this while standing in front of the pedalboard... which I have missed pointing out.
      Obviously the MC8 has those extra switch though! Which is a bummer to let go.
      Hopefully this helps and thanks for passing by :)

    Great video! I really appreciate your honesty about it. I love my MC8 and immediately got a MC6 Pro, but I’m hesitant to swap them because I too saw the same issues. Also, I wasn’t able to just port over my MC8 settings and looks like I’ll have to start from scratch… I’m kind of in if it ain’t broke don’t fix it situation

    • @AleSuggests
      @AleSuggests  Рік тому +3

      Thank you! :)
      I was able to port the banks and presets from the MC8 to the MC6 Pro. To do so:
      - Backup all your MC8 banks and preset, and store the file somewhere on your computer
      - Hook up the MC6 Pro
      - In the software, go to "Controller Backup"
      - Then "Restore your controller Presets" and chose the MC8 file previously created
      - A pop-up will tell you that the devices are different, but that you can still try to restore. Do so!
      - Now you just need to rearrange the presets order, because of the MC6 Pro has less switch... to do so you can simply drag and drop the presets at the bottom of the "Edit Bank" section of the software
      The whole thing didn't take me more than a few minutes, but then obviously you need to add to that the time to implement the colour schemes.
      I hope this helps, and thanks so much for passing by ;)

    Morningstar controllers are the best for me. But I don't need this fancy one really. I got the MC6 and MC3 for my boards and I like the way they are similar. But I like your video, very thorough review. I subscribed. It's the MLX10 that I'm interested in.

    I’m new to MIDI controllers and am looking into getting an MC6 Pro as my first one for my guitar pedalboard. It seems to have all the best features on the market in terms of connectivity. Is the display issue really a KO criterion? I am also considering an RJM PBC/6X which is also a loop switcher, but the price difference is significant.

    • @AleSuggests
      @AleSuggests  Рік тому

      I wouldn't say the display is a MC6 Pro KO. No.
      It is only difficult to edit on the device, and reading the bank names can also be tricky. But it is still a very capable device.
      If you need loop pedal switching, you may also want to consider Boss ES5 and Disaster Area DPC-5.
      I hope this helps and thank you so much for passing by ;)

    How do you intend to use your MC6 Pro? To control guitar pedals, or Ableton... maybe synths? I'm curious!

    • @bvrbvs

      @AleSuggests  Рік тому

      @@bvrbvs I am not a fan of controllers without displays, unless you need to control just a very limited amount of parameters and you automate most of the effect switching... so it depends. Never tried the Boss personally yet, though

    I also have an MC8 which I think I'll be keeping. What I don't understand is the reasoning behind the three separate screens. Maybe it's a cost thing, but wouldn't it have been easier to have one large screen, like the MC6 and just give it more functionality? I mean, there's a lot of wasted real estate on the pedal where there is no screen and that could have meant larger fonts for editing, or more creative layouts. Either way, I have a Quad Cortex and I need the eight buttons to mimic that layout.

    • @AleSuggests
      @AleSuggests  Рік тому +2

      I thought a lot about this too... let's put it this way... if they'd come up with a fat badass full HD amoled display... but the pedal now needs 1.25A of power... would have you bought it? I probably would have thought about it twice. So perhaps to keep the milliamps low they had to use these tiny screens? Obviously, I'm just speculating here.
      I'm also torn if I should sell the MC8 or not... we'll see.
      Thanks so much for passing by 😉

    • @keithbolves278
      @keithbolves278 Рік тому

      Well, if you sell your MC8, you'll get top dollar for it because they're simply not available anywhere. But there is a product I have my eye on which has a beautiful big screen and could be an answer to a lot of these questions. It's called Mortrix (formerly MIDIum). It's one I'm interested in. Have you seen it?
