    She had me fearing for the dog. I’m thinking to myself you are man handling the poor dog. But I realize you know exactly what you’re doing. I’m getting ready for my really first real and complete groom on my four month old standard all black poodle puppy. I tried grooming with my wife our first poodle and we really sucked at it. Then my wife passed away three years ago this coming December. And my best buddy bosco died on me last thanksgiving from bloat. I didn’t think I was gonna get another dog because how devastating it was. But it was so quiet I called the same breeder and lucked out. Now I figure after six months all the money I spent on the grooming gear will pay for it self by grooming him myself. I’ve been watching as much as I can to get ready, and I’m ready but just nervous. Thanks so much for sharing and helping us out here. Wouldn’t be doing it , if it wasn’t for you pros showing us your skills. ✌️👍🇺🇸

      Lucky has been groomed every six weeks since he was a puppy and he is just a wonderful dog. He saved his owner's life, she was bleeding to death in the bathroom from a surgical wound and lucky ran out and barked like crazy at her husband who was preparing to drive away. He went to see why Lucky was upset and his wife was in the bathroom in a puddle of blood. Another couple of minutes and she would have been dead on the floor.

    I need help... I have an 18 year old black toy poodle. He's been getting groomed at the same groomers all his life but today they called us and said they couldn't groom him anymore because he had seizures and peed everywhere and was kicking his legs etc. Yet when we picked him up he was fine and he's been home with us acting completely fine. He wasn't seizing, we know they had him laying on his side on the metal table, and he had to go to the bathroom. He can't bend his legs and he's blind and deaf so he was probably terrified! Now he was just at the vet in November and they said he was in fine health and could live to be past 20 so we know it's more likely that the groomers just didn't know how to handle him and he was panicking.
    That being said, I feel like I can't trust anyone to groom him now. So I want to learn to do it myself to keep him stress-free. He needs daily eye cream for his dry eyes, and he ABSOLUTELY FREAKS OUT when I do it. Vets don't want to touch him. But only I seem to know how to calm him and actually successfully do it. I've had to use scissors to cut some HUGE matted chunks near his eyes, but sometimes he yelps because the chunks pull his skin. It's scary because I think I'm about to cut his eyes. Once he yelps I have to start all over and we can spend an hour in the bathroom trying to cut just a few chunks from his eyes.
    I'm hoping to find better, easier tools and methods to cut those chunks from his eyes. Being that he is black makes it all harder to see and he has EXTREMELY loose skin. He's only 4 pounds IF that, so his eyes themselves are really tiny and I'm just scared he's going to jerk the wrong way (he always does) and I'll slice him. Please, any suggestions on cutting the eyes is MUCH appreciated. I'm only 22 and he's 18 so I view him like my little brother. Just trying to do everything I can so he's happy and doesn't have to go through any more stressful haircuts. As long as I can successfully shave his eyes, I don't mind having to care for him 24/7. That's why I got a poodle after all lol.

    I've been grooming my poodles for 20 years, and I just got a Moyen Poodle puppy and I'm terrified. He's so active, and so fast. Even though I'm familiar with the clippers and have literally been grooming two poodles once a month for 20 years, I'm totally freaked out by doing the Moyen. I think I'm taking him to a professional. It's not that my other poodles were that easy either. None of them loved getting their faces clipped. But they didn't totally freak out. My new Moyen just goes wild.

      Are u an experienced groomer?? If not then don't judge how others groom. Everyone has there own way of grooming. However that's probably how she was taught. She is being very careful with him.. would I personally use clippers over eyes no.. not all groomers do the same thing cutting wise. Every groomer does something different it's what your comfortable with.

    • @pattywirth2518
      @pattywirth2518  7 років тому +15

      Nope, Lucky is a great dog, almost all the poodles I groom are very calm and act like Lucky. Put your dogs on a grooming table and do not give in when they have a fit. When they behave for a few seconds, stop the clippers and PRAISE THEM, NOT WHILE THEY ARE ACTING UP. They will soon learn to behave in order to please you. Poodles are very smart, they have TRAINED YOU NOT TO GROOM THEM. Just go slow, trim a little bit, but do not take the clipper away if they are acting up, only when they hold still then PRAISE, PRAISE, PRAISE and start again. Do it slow and they will learn. No praise when they are bad, no comfort, no poor baby, good dog. Wait till they hold still for that. Write me back and let me know if they behaved better. And put them up on a table!!!!

    Hi I have Chinese Crested which I groom myself with this poodle cut. Just wanted to ask about clipping near the eyes like how you do. I always worry that I might cut her eyeball and wondered if you have any tips for keeping the eyes safe. Thank you.

    • @pattywirth2518
      @pattywirth2518  8 років тому +12

      +Claire Fraiser If you look at your dog's eyes, you will notice a bump or raised place in the inside corner of the eye. You can aim the clipper directly at that and you will miss the eye, because as you go over the bump you go over the eye. When you are shaving the lower lid you have to be more careful as you could possibly catch the eyelid. It would be very difficult to injure the eyeball. The dog will close it's eye tight as soon as the clippers get near it's eye. Look at the video a few more times and just go slowly. Also it is a good idea to turn the clipper on and run it over your fingers to get a really good feel for the clipper action.
      Very difficult to injure the eye with clippers.

    I have the Andis ultra edge clippers that I bought at Petsmart. They get hot super fast. I can barely trim one foot before they get so hot I have to stop. Is that normal for clippers? At that rate I never get to finish trimming the dog. Any suggestions? Did I get defective clippers?

    • @pattywirth2518
      @pattywirth2518  7 років тому +3

      I can't be sure, can you just let them run and see how fast they get hot. Put them on a table and just let them run. Also do you mean the blade or the clipper them selves. The blade will heat up fast when you are learning because you always go slow when you learn. IF it is the machine itself, take it back, I use mine for a long time and the machine should never feel hot. Get back to me. You need one or two extra blades, you will heat them up when you are learning.

      After shaving the faces on 30 thousand or more poodles I have never injured a poodle eye shaving a face. You would have to jam the blade into the dogs eye and then it would have to keep it's eye open while you jammed it. The dog closes it's eye the second the blade gets near it, just like you do when something gets near your eye. Do you stab your eye when you put on all that eye makeup, like mascara and eyeliner? No, of course you do not.
