I'm kinda annoyed that you didn't go in more depth about the ps2 games, WRC rally evolved has many features that current games lack, i.e. random events like rocks falling, broken cars, stage changes, etc. Features like those should be added in the future, because they were really good and interesting, it made the game feel more immersive.
I agree Rally Evolved is still one of my favourite rally games of all time it had so much depth to it along with the inclusion of classic rally cars and a rally-cross mode which added so much replay-ability
Time limitations and the focus was to get to WRC 9. There was a lot to pack in and if the video is any longer people just stop watching. I could probably make an hour long video covering all of this in more detail.
Evolved had some good features like the random stage scenarios but the driving was absolute garbage along and each rally only having 3 stages was simply pathetic even for the time .
It'll be interesting to see what Codemasters can do with members from Evolution Studios now employed with them after the buyout. Codemasters first game could be considered a long awaited sequel to what EvoS made back in 2005.
@@kartaltoth684 great gameplay but idk why evolution studios cut all special stages in half in wrc rally evolved and still better special stage on wrc 4 2004

It is wrong at around the 11 minute mark, WRC8 was certainly not the first WRC game to have classics, it simply re-introduced it. My favorite rally game of all time, WRC: Rally Evolved, had classic cars and a very good selection of Group B cars, including the underrated Renault 5 Maxi Turbo.

Excellent video as always! It's always interesting to see how video games have evolved through the years, including the WRC series. DiRT Rally and WRC are no doubt the greatest Rally game series ever made!
What made me fall in love with rallying was WRC II Extreme for PS2. I loved that game, it was challenging, AI was quite fast, loved the different scenarios and the sound. And rallies had many Kms: it was usually 4-5 original stages per rally, and some stages were repeated in different conditions - night time, rain, reverse; for a total of 9 stages per rally. It gave the feeling of an endurance event, something that many modern games lost. And the game saved every 3 stages, so if you messed up on SS3 and wanted to restart, you had to restart from SS1! Of course, there were only few cars and the handling was average at best, but for 2002 it was a great game and I loved it.
newer games after evolution studios and milestone are clunky as hell. But My favorite WRC title is WRC 4(ps2) mainly because of handling and More stages compared to evolved.
My first rally game was Colin McRae Rally 2.0 played when I was 5 years old. Other rally games that are my favorites are the PS2 games WRC 4 and WRC rally evolved. The Milestone games are not great although Kylotton games trying to give a great rally games but not perfect as the Dirt Rally games or the F1 official games. I believe that WRC 9 would be a good game.
A small evolution each year makes more money than a revolution every 10 years. Plus making small evolution after small evolution is a security against utter failure.
Only rally games that beats Dirt Rally series IS cmr2.0 and PS2 era WRC 4 and evolved, cmr 05 and after that RBR. Kylotonns games are and Will always Be clunky
The biggest improvement that WRC 9 has finally addressed is the car audio. Previous titles have had weak, lifeless, and flat audio. WRC 9 finally adds slightly better audio not the best but better than before. The main elements in wrc is speed, tight complex stages, the balance between grip and no grip and finally raw audio from those powerfully explosive cars in the championship.
Loved the PS2 WRC games, would ask for them each Christmas and then play them for hours at a time. The fact they had mammoth stages that you had to tackle and if you messed up, you had to decide the restart the stage rom the begin, or just hope and get to the end, made it more fun. Been playing these newer ones since WRC 5 on my PS Vita, before getting WRC8 on my Switch, WRC9 on my PS4 and WRC10 on my PS5. Annoying that they all have the same bugs in them each year, but will get the newest one when it comes out
Leaving out the CMR series results missing a major part of rally gaming history. Rally games with any sort of realism started with CMR1 (which held an official license) and improved a lot until CMR4. Also Richard Burns Rally was the first real simulator style game.
Colin McRae Rally is the all time best rally game!! Graphic is not as good as modern rally games, but crash scenes are surprisingly great haha And also, voice actor of co-driver, Nicky Grist was soooooooo gooooood!!!!! His voice is really easy to listen to while I'm driving cars in game. Even for me, Japanese, his English is easy to understand as well. Please come back Colin McRae Rally!!
Was always mad keen on motorsport games on PS2 in my youth. Always enjoyed the WRC titles from 2003 to 2005, 2004 was difficult but even in the easiest Championship mode, a proper Championship as you couldn't win every round 😏 & yes i even enjoyed the Colin McRae Rally series, played the 2005 version of that regularly till the disc failed....😔
One mistake in the video. He says that WRC 8 was the first in the series with historic rally cars. You also play historic rally cars in WRC 1 on the Ps3... It was a Dlc tho. Also, I belive you could race in Japan too in WRC 2... Also as a DLC
not counting CMR, i'd say PS2's WRC games are the most bananas, especially the cheat codes, there's even one in 4 that turns your co-driver into a literal chicken! BWAK BWAK BWAK-
Fix the engine sound please coz its what connects the driver to his car but you guys are either ignoring or failing in that simple task..you want to feel that throaty roar when you floor the pedal or that angry growl when you let off the gas.I can say its improved in WRC 9 but that is only when you are playing chase Cam, in the cockpit its just a monotonous irritating and boring whine going on and off. Great potential here with the gorgeous stages but you guys are still missing the point the immersion
I played Sega rally championschip and it was my first rally game, than Colin McRae Rally 1-4, Richard Burns Rally and finaly DiRT. I never even tried WRC series. Sorry...
With all due respect to the creators, visually again nice progress, but the physics at the first glance, not much of improvement over wrc 8, cars seem to be floating as if no contact with surface instead of weight transfer and inertia causing them to be running out of the road, longitudinal and lateral deceleration at braking and in cornering sideways still too rapid. No sense of mass/weight/gravity on the vehicle, also with the suspention, wheels dont seem to be reacting with the surface imperfections and still looks like the control of the vehicle is imprecise, which doesnt give the feeling that mistakes are by a driver as much as the physics engine. Sound better, but unfortunately still poor realism. An ultimate simulation should start with a realistic physics/car behaviour and visuals later I think. In case of satisfying wide range of consumers, two physics engines should be in place in options to choose from, easy and simulation, otherwise it just looks like the visuals are improving by a mile and physics by an inch. Old rally games may have not had the visuals, but their success was coming from the driving realism and in here the feeling is opposite. Just my humble opinion. Kind regards
We shall see if after 20+ years a developer FINALLY gets it right as far as lateral inertial strafe under throttle on loose surfaces. Thus far, none have done it. And it's made these "simulations" essentially useless for pre-season training.
WRC games also don't seem to capture a tolerable rhythm for the co-pilot reading pace notes, PS3/360 games sounded awfully robotic even for that time. Since I took off the arrows on the HUD I started to pay attention to Phil Mills in how he delivers the pace notes in Dirt 2, and occasionally he helps the game sell the urgency and speed by sounding more stressed, raising his voice sometimes. Small detail but it works.
I suspect the salt will be coming from you when Codemasters finally gets the WRC license in 2023, and develops the game us Dirt fans have been wanting for years.
